In “I Wanna Be Like God,” Pastor Shola Akognon teaches from Ephesians 5:1–21, where Paul calls believers to imitate God as dearly loved children. What does that actually look like in everyday life? Paul gives us three practical instructions: walk in love, walk in light, and walk in wisdom.Through the love of Christ, the transforming power of living as children of light, and the wisdom that recognizes our opportunities are limited, we learn that becoming more like God isn’t simply about trying harder. God has given us His Holy Spirit—and a community of believers—to help us live the life He has called us to live.

Who is Jesus?Jehovah’s Witnesses teach that Jesus is not Almighty God, that He previously existed as Michael the archangel, and that He was raised from the dead only as a spirit. But do those teachings agree with Scripture? In this message, we examine what the Bible says about the identity of Jesus Christ. Hebrews declares that the Son is superior to every angel. John teaches that all things were created through Him. Jesus receives worship, shares the Father’s glory, and identifies Himself with the divine name: “Before Abraham was born, I am.”Jesus is not “a god,” a created angel, or merely a perfect man. He is the eternal Son of God, worthy of honor, glory, praise, and worship. This message also equips Christians to speak truthfully and lovingly with Jehovah’s Witness friends, relatives, neighbors, and coworkers.

In this sermon, “Walking and Talking with Jesus Everyday,” Pastor Emmanuel Akognon reminds us that Jesus calls His people to be both salt and light in the world. From Matthew 5:13–16, we are challenged to see that Christian witness is not only about what we say, and it is not only about how we live. It is both. Our walking with Jesus gives power to our talking for Jesus.Pastor Emmanuel teaches that working with Jesus is better than merely working for Jesus. When we walk closely with Christ, our witness, service, evangelism, and discipleship begin to flow from a real relationship with Him.

Are you living a life worthy of your calling? In this powerful message from Ephesians 4:1–6, the message challenges us to make unity our first priority — before anything else.Too often we think the Christian life starts with a list of rules. But Paul says the very first thing he wants from us is unity. In this sermon, we explore what that actually looks like — the humility, gentleness, patience, and love it takes to walk together as one body. Whether you're struggling with a broken relationship, dealing with a difficult person, or wondering why the church fights so much, this message is for you. Paul reminds us: we share one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God — and that bond is stronger than anything that divides us.

What does it mean to experience God?In Ephesians 3:14–21, the Apostle Paul prays one of the most powerful prayers in Scripture. He does not simply pray that the church would know more information about God. He prays that they would be strengthened in their inner being, that Christ would dwell in their hearts through faith, that they would grasp the love of Christ, and that they would be filled with all the fullness of God.This sermon explores the difference between knowing about God and truly knowing God. Christianity is not less than truth, doctrine, study, and theology, but it is more than information. God wants His people to experience the reality of His presence, His love, and His power.

In this message from Acts 17, we explore one of the most important distinctions in the Christian faith:Christianity is not a religion — it is a relationship. When the Apostle Paul arrived in Athens, he encountered a city full of religion, philosophy, and idols. Yet despite all their spirituality, the people still did not truly know God. Paul used their altar “to the unknown god” to point them to the one true God revealed in Jesus Christ. Many people today identify with a religion, a tradition, or a church—but that does not necessarily mean they have a real relationship with Christ. In this sermon we explore:• The difference between religion and true faith• Why a little religion can actually prevent real Christianity• How Paul approached a culture full of spiritual confusion• The essential doctrines of the Christian faith• Why the resurrection of Jesus changes everythingAs Paul declares in Athens, God now commands all people everywhere to repent and turn to Him through Jesus Christ. If you’ve ever wondered whether Christianity is just another religion—or something more—this message will challenge you to consider the difference between religious identity and genuine salvation.

In Ephesians 2:11–22, the apostle Paul reveals one of the most radical truths of the gospel: Jesus didn’t merely reconcile individuals to God — He demolished the wall of hostility between people and formed one new family. Jew and Gentile. Far and near. Outsiders and insiders. Now one.In this message, “The Third Race,” we explore how the cross brings peace, identity, belonging, and purpose — and why the church is meant to be the world’s greatest example of unity across every barrier

Pastor Akognon answers two questions this week: 1. How much of my money should be for investing, savings, daily usage? Where is the best place to invest my money today?2. We like to quote these verses from Malachi 3:8-11 and claim the promises but not the curses. If this passage is truly for us today, what do you think “…all the tithes…” looks like for us as a Body? And can we honestly say that we are receiving "blessings that we don't have room for" when there is a struggle with finances? What might "testing God" in this passage consist of?

  1. If a person is a professional actor and he or she is a Christian and they have a hot and heavy love scene that they are required to do. Is that a sin because of the touching and so on?? Is this considered lust? Especially if they’re a Stanislavsky actor (method actor) (Shonte can explain this part of the question further if you aren’t aware of the nuances of this particular technique).

2. Person A is a Christian and proclaims that God answered their prayer for a new car. However, it is well known that person A never changed the oil or maintained the car, thus resulting in the engine exploding. How can we know that God answered their specific prayer as opposed to the fact that He is simply a merciful God, even to those who have no relationship with Him?

Pastor Emmanuel Akognon answers questions submitted by members in the monthly Question and Answer Sunday.

  1. If God has forgiven us for our sin and he’s cast them as far as the east is from the west: Then when we stand in front of him on judgment day what will we be judged for?

  2. Will you explain what Jesus means when he says he has forgiven us? What he means about judgment? And what he means about accountability for the sins we have committed?

  3. I had a conversation with some Christians who believed that not homeschooling your kids was a sin because they will become disciples of the Babylonian world system. They will be taught to think like the world. They said Christian parents shouldn't enroll their kids because of reasons like “Public indoctrinations (LGBTQ, gender fluidity, inaccurate assessments of curriculum rigor, etc.), evolution, secularism, and sexual promiscuity, a lack of parental involvement, and literally a whole host and myriad of things that come with the public sphere.”

  4. Others pointed to passages like Proverbs 22:6, and Deuteronomy 6 saying it’s the parents’ job to train our children. They also used Romans 13 saying it’s the government’s responsibility to keep peace by bearing the sword, not provide education.

  5. So how should Christian parents think about education for their kids? Does the responsibility fall on the parents or the government?

  6. What was the first language spoken in the Bible? Was Paul a gentile? Why does it seem like our reverent fear of God is at a low level than what we see in the lives of the people of God in the Bible? It does not seem like we honor, revere, and recognize the holiness and the righteousness of God. What do you think?

  1. In light Paul's wording of 1 Tim 5:18, is there any possibility that the book of Luke was seen as the authoritative word of God either by the children of Israel or the early church?

  2. My employer is asking for photos from the upcoming San Francisco pride parade to be included in an upcoming issue of their magazine. Though not confirmed, there is a chance I could be asked by my employer to attend the event to take photos. As of now, I'm indifferent to taking the photos since they're being taken on behalf of my employer, but am fully prepared to outright decline participation should I be asked to either appear in any of the photos or give personal support. In order to avoid potential conflict, should I opt out of attending the event against my employer’s wishes if asked to go?

  3. The Bible is often thought of as a western or European book. But does the Bible have its origins in Africa or elsewhere and who are the major contributors. (I know a little about Augustine and Tertullian are there many others)?

  4. In 1 Samuel 15 God commands Saul to kill men, women, children and infants. (Also cattle sheep, camels, and donkeys) How is this just? How do we respond to critics who say our God is a moral monster by commanding to kill innocent women and children?

  3. I have a friend that goes to a Methodist church in San Rafael. His pastor had a gay couple that had been in his congregation for three years both men had been previously married with kids and grandchildren. One was a lawyer and they wanted to get married and wanted the pastor to marry them. He did and said that he did so because one was a lawyer and he was afraid of the church being sued. He didn't marry them the traditional way as a priest would he said he married them the way that a judge would if they had gone to the Civic Center. I believe that violated God‘s law. Pastor Emmanuel Akognon answers questions submitted by members in the monthly Question and Answer Sunday.

  1. I have a question about our unsaved family members - specifically, our children.  I know that the ways of the Lord are not like my ways, and I know that His mercy is beyond what I can wrap my brain around.  But both of my children were baptized - by their own choice - when they were 12 and 13 years old.  Both have since walked away from the Church - but more critically, denied Christ as their Savior.  They are in their mid to late 20s now. I heard in a teaching by Jon Courson that when thinking of our unsaved children, to think of Jeremiah 31: 15 - 17 - and to stand firm in the salvation of our kids.  What are your thoughts on this?

2. My friend and I are both Christians. We believe the Bible as the sole authority in matters of faith and practice. But we are having trouble using biblical language to describe our feelings on a particular subject.

The world uses the term “ Vibe” or “ energy” to describe the feeling of someone’s or Somethings demeanor or unspoken essence. For example, the woman who is smiling in our face and praising us, yet you can feel “ Something is not right with this person.” Or when someone is constantly negative and selfish, that just by being around them you become negative. We know as Christians we have discernment given by the Holy Spirit, but when non-Christians use the term, they obviously aren’t talking about discernment by the Holy Spirit. What is the best way to describe what we are ALL feeling?

3. In China alone the estimated number of Christians in the underground church is in the millions and growing, in spite of persecution.  In America we have been lulled into a false sense of security.  How can we, as a church, prepare ourselves for the time in which we also may/will have to go underground too? 1. What is the Christian financial responsibility in lending and borrowing money? What if I owe somebody that I could not pay back? What if I have been forgiven my debt through legal route but I am now in a position to pay back, what should I do?
  2. When prophets in the Old Testament heard from God, was it audible or mental? An example is how Moses heard from God.
  3. Would you please explain what the reference to "angels" mean in I Corinthians 11:10?
  4. Regarding I Peter 3:18-20, what do you believe Jesus was doing here? Do you think he went into hell to prove his victory to those who didn't take him seriously in Noah's time? Or, was he hopefully "preaching" and showing Himself to them because he was having mercy on them and giving them the opportunity to be saved?
  5. Can a Christian having issues with depression be allowed to participate as a leader in the church? When does depression become a problem for a Christian?

  3. My question for you is whether or not women should wear makeup. (or to what degree) I feel as though many women these days are trying too hard to cover up what is real and ‘mask’ their faces with makeup.. Some women wear makeup more naturally to enhance their natural beauty. Is this wrong? Does this not indicate dissatisfaction with the way God made us? This may seem like a silly issue but it has been bothering me lately.. Especially as I’ve noticed certain covenant members in extremely tight clothing and a lot of makeup. I occasionally will put on makeup, but I feel convicted about determining what’s right. I thought as Christians, we are to be set apart from the ways of the world… emphasizing inner beauty. Thank you for your guidance.

Pastor Emmanuel Akognon answers questions submitted by members in the monthly Question and Answer Sunday.

Questions from members:

  1. The book of Psalms mentions God's "right hand" numerous times. (Psalm 16:11; 17:7; 18:35; 44:3; 45:4; 73:23; 98:1; 118:15; 138:7; 139:10, and many other verses.) Can you please clarify what this means? (I've looked it up in some commentaries, and some say it is Jesus and others say it represents God's strength and power.) What is the correct definition/meaning of God's right hand as noted in Psalms?

  2. In Proverbs, the terms wisdom, knowledge and understanding are mentioned many times. In Proverbs 2:6, all three are mentioned, "For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding." Can you please define the differences between these three terms as mentioned throughout Proverbs?

  3. Over the years I have always been confused with the statements you make regarding the Word of Knowledge, which I know has often been mixed up with the Gift of Prophecy. You will say, “If someone comes to me with “Thus saith the Lord”, I will know they are lying. But in the next statement you will say, “I’m not saying that people don’t hear God speak, or that God doesn’t speak to them.” It comes across as they just cannot say anything to you, just keep it to yourselves. Aside from the obvious statements that may contradict scripture; a word that has to do with your responsibility as Pastor; or the reliability of the person through whom the “word” may come, how else do you determine if someone is lying? And, what would be the procedure if someone who has this gift believed that God gave them a word for the body?

  4. When are children no longer children? How should parents deal with their adult children who still live with them? How should parents deal with their adult children who have no jobs and are not trying to get a job but feel it is their right to stay with their parents for free?

Questions from members:

  1. Did King James I write a book about demonology? If yes, how can he be credited for writing the King James Version of the Bible? Was King James a Christian?

  2. How would you deal with a man and woman who have had 30 years of friendship that seems pure and loving without any romantic overtones. The man gets married and a few months after revealed to his friend over 30 years that he has always had romantic feelings for her?

Case Studies dealt with during the sermon.

  1. Rodney believes that he was saved at a tender age of 7. He was baptized at Corinthian Baptist Church of Cotonou. Rodney participated regularly when his parents made him attend services as a young lad. Now at the age of 25 Rodney does not attend church services and only comes to church on Christmas, Mother's day, and other special events. Rodney is also living with a girl he is not married to and seems to think there is nothing wrong with the arrangement. Is Rodney a Christian? Why or why not?

  2. Joanna goes to Church services religiously. Since 1990 she has never missed any church worship service. She does not attend Sunday School or Cell Group. She is single but living with a man that is separated from his wife. Joanna is 35 years old. Joanna thinks Sunday School and Cell group are extracurricular activities. She does not believe in reading the Bible on a regular basis. She was heard one time saying that she does not have to read the Bible because God speaks to her with a sweet quiet voice every day. Joanna believes that hearing the word every Sunday is good enough for her. Is Joanna a born again believer? Why or why not?

  3. Karen is a covenant member of Village Baptist Church. She is also a team leader. Karen has several members of the church that she has not spoken to in over 5 years. These people drive her crazy plus, they have offended her in a very bad way and she does not have time for them. In fact, she cannot stand them. She was confronted one time by a deacon who knew about one of them. She said she just cannot find it in her heart to forgive them and act as if nothing happened. She does not want to discuss the issue. Is Karen a Christian? Why or why not?

  4. Victor comes to church because he is interested in a girl at the church. He does not attend Sunday School or Bible study. In fact, he does not participate in anything unless he is invited. He was baptized at an early age but has never made a confession of faith in Christ as an adult. He has stated several times that he was baptized because his parents wanted him to do so. He does not support the work of the church at all. He has put a few dollars every now and then in the collection plate. He thinks Christian stewardship is what preachers made up in the time of the reformation. He does not believe in spending personal time with God. Would you consider Victor to be a genuine Christian?

  5. Julius is a party animal. In fact, everyone in the area knows him as the "life of any party". He has been a member of Jerusalem Church of God in Christ for 10 years. He believed Jesus has nothing against going to parties and having fun. If there are no parties in the area for a month he would arrange his own and invite many of his friends. Alcohol is served freely at his parties. Some of his guests even bring their own marijuana to his parties. Julius also sings in the choir when he is on time. He claims he does not smoke or use drugs. He drinks but hardly ever gets drunk. He comes to church regularly but usually late. He does not believe in Cell Group, Bible Study, or Prayer meetings. Julius claims that God speaks to him frequently and he knows without a doubt that he is a Christian. When challenged, his form answer is "I am only human.

Is Julius a follower of Christ? Why or why not?

Questions from members:

  1. If a Christian man or woman has had more than 1 unsuccessful marriages do you think they should never marry again? And what would you tell them if they felt that they failed God as they broke the marriage covenant that God desires for marriage.

  2. I acknowledge that I have enjoyed the "Left Behind" series in the past where the premise was that all true Christians will be "raptured" from the earth before the Great Tribulation so they won't have to be a part of this end time battle.   But I don't see in scripture where this is really the case.  What, in your opinion, is the Bible saying about this issue?

  3. It's probably realistic to say that most individuals will be influenced negatively or positively by family or people they are close to when it comes to issues that involve "taking sides".  How does a person deal with people who treat you in a negative way based on something they were told by another person, and it may not even be accurate or true?
