Welcome to Digital Media Church (formerly the SMC Podcast)! In this episode, Matt Williams introduces the new chapter of a podcast that has served church and ministry leaders with over 450 episodes—and explains why digital ministry is no longer optional.
Matt unpacks how social media is just one piece of the digital ministry puzzle and why churches must see every online touchpoint—websites, email, podcasts, YouTube, social, livestreams, and more—as a mission field, not just a marketing channel.
Learn how digital ministry has evolved from "post consistently" to a full discipleship strategy and why today's Great Commission is also a "digital commission". Understand the dangers of digital noise—which can pull people away from hope and community—and discover how churches of any size can work smarter, not harder, using free and low-cost tools. Moving forward, we will dive deeper into: Websites & SEO, Email Marketing, Content Strategy, Podcasting & Video Production, and AI Tools for Ministry.
If you're a pastor, communications director, or volunteer who feels overwhelmed by digital, this podcast is here to come alongside you with practical strategies and a kingdom-first approach.

Many believe technology use in the church started only in the last century. However, it didn't just begin with radio broadcasts and TV evangelism; it dates back to the Old Testament, when God’s people used various tools to communicate messages from God. One example was when Noah built an ark to deliver a message from God. Today, the tech-mediated ministry is evident in social media, live streaming of church services, mobile apps, and more. While many churches rush to reach high engagement, some people believe that what matters most are the stories of lives changed. Churches often focus on the quantitative side, but it's essential to consider the qualitative aspect. In this episode of the Social Media Podcast, Heath Woolman, next-generation pastor at the First Baptist Church in Kissimmee, Florida, and Bryan Barrineau, Student Pastor of FBC Enterprise, share their insights based on their study of Technology-Mediated Ministry and its role in fulfilling the Great Commission. They also discuss how churches and ministries can leverage technology in ways we haven't imagined yet.

If you’re an audio-based enthusiast, you’d probably heard about Clubhouse. Clubhouse blew up fast during the pandemic and became the talk of the town as celebrities, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders all flocked in to host live discussions on the audio-based social media app.The social media app attracted many high-profile personalities, and for a time, it provided a unique way for people worldwide to interact, connect, and engage.
But Clubhouse's success was short-lived due to the declining quality of content, as the platform became overrun with spammers. The app's exclusivity also hindered its growth, and it failed to pay creators while it still had the opportunity. Twitter and Facebook also started to launch their own audio-only features, competing against Clubhouse’s exclusivity.

Empowering women has been a focus in different industries but it's not always talked about within the church. We believe it's time we start a conversation as women offer tremendous value to the faith community.
Women in the church are important so it's a must that churches include them and to allow them to use their talents and gifts for the fulfillment of the Great Commission. Women can do so much more!
It's time that women are given different opportunities in the ministry. Women are encouraged to become the people God wants them to be, just as how we empower men the same way. By empowering everyone and not just women, the church can become a community that fully reflects the love of God.
Watch this episode of the Social Media Church Podcast as Nils Smith and Katie Allred have an interesting conversation about empowering women in the ministry. Learn why churches should give more opportunities to women beyond the kitchen and the home.

Many people say that a church doesn’t need to worry about reviews. But we think otherwise.
It doesn’t matter if reviews are on Yelp, Google, or any other social media platform. A review is still a review—and it matters. Pastors and leaders must understand that reviews can affect the church more than you think. They don’t exactly tell the world how God is moving in your community, but they tell you that some things ought to change.
Reviews by real people–newcomers, regular churchgoers, volunteers, and staff–should matter more. Every opportunity should be an avenue to improve and encourage others in telling how the church has made an impact in their lives.
Watch this episode of the Social Media Church Podcast as Nils Smith and Aaron Magnuson discuss getting reviews online. Learn why you shouldn’t ignore the feedback you receive, what you can do, and how you can highlight the work that God is doing.

Digital church isn’t going anywhere, and neither is in-person church!
It is so important to be able to point out what works for your ministry in reaching more people—whether that be digitally or through local ministry. Utilizing both in-person and digital outreach for ministry can offer multiple benefits, if done through healthy integration.
Churches should consider the Jay’s method for determining what type of church you are and develop ministry digitally, physically, and spiritually.

When the pandemic started, technology paved a way for churches around the world to reach a greater audience. Thousands of ministries have turned to livebroadcasting, and people definitely have seen its benefits—that they can still attend Sunday services without physically being present at church.
As we are entering post-COVID season, churches are embracing and believing that livestreaming is going to be a huge part of the future; since there has been a great shift to viewing everything online, especially during the pandemic season, and it seems to be staying in the long run. It also complements the normal Sunday church services even as they are slowly going back to normal face-to-face activities.
In this episode of the Social Media Church Podcast, Nils Smith and Aaron Magnuson share a very meaningful conversation with guest speaker and CEO of Pushpay, Molly Matthews. In this episode of Social Media Church Podcast, join Nils Smith, Aaron Magnuson, along with Jonah Wiley, as they discuss how Discord has become an amazing tool to create communities, and how the church can use that opportunity to reach non-believers to help them grow more in their relationship with Jesus.

There are a couple of reasons why an employee stays with a company. A few of these reasons are having a safe working environment, the feeling of being valued, and financial security.
By being a volunteer, financial security is obviously not applicable. A common denominator volunteers have is having the heart of a servant. So, if there’s something a leader could do for his/her volunteer, that is to help them grow and develop their crafts.

As churches continue to ride and embrace the complex yet exciting wave of social media, it’s best to be reminded and grounded of the purpose of why we are utilizing these platforms – that is to make real connections and relationships in our sphere of influence so we can bring people to Christ.
So if our goal is only to get more likes, engagements, or shares on social media, then we need to reevaluate things.

Some say Michael Angelo is considered to be the best artist in history. Yet in his peak, he said, “I’m still learning.”

One of the things highlighted over the course of this pandemic is that the internet is just too big! We all could jump in and throw content for social media and other platforms, but it is still not enough.
And while it is certainly not a competition, NOW is the perfect time for us to truly maximize this landscape, and leverage the internet in order for us to amplify the message of hope in Jesus.

Mental health, generosity, and racism are such important topics for our churches to be covering. Many people we lead are waiting for us to start engaging in these difficult subjects.
Chances are, many churches aren’t talking about these subjects, not because they don’t want to, but because they don’t know how to.

One of the lessons this season has taught us is: there are things that are just out of our control.
The same is true to our churches – we were forced to let go of the box of control, and adapt so we can bring the message of hope in Jesus in the midst of uncertainties.
Are we now operating on a decentralized model? Or maybe a better question is: should your church decentralize?
