Purple Pride is a podcast to reach out to our school community of Heuvelton in a time of social distancing in order to gain information, learn about people and their lives and the fond memories of those school days prior to online learning.
Rick Barlow shares the fond memories of growing up in Heuvelton and how the pride of the school and community has impacted his life. His family have combined a total of 120 years of dedication to the Heuvelton School and Community. His father the math teacher, his mother the school nurse/ health teacher, his aunt a 6th grade teacher and his grandmother a cafeteria monitor all worked at the school and lived in the district of Heuvelton. His 2 sisters Babette and Colleen also attended Heuvelton and made huge contributions to their athletic teams, and since graduating from HCS have made a difference in the global world of the military and health care. Rick participated on a hall of fame basketball team coached by John Tehonica and was a member of David and Doreen Poulton Marching band.
A Tribute to Heuvelton’s Central Paul Pierce for an outstanding 35 year career as our Technology Teacher. He has dedicated 38 years to education evolving with the times of change from Teaching Agriculture, Industrial Arts, to Computer Systems . He is looking forward to retirement to spend more time with his wife seeing grandchildren and working on his small farm and home projects. Paul may also find time for occasional bike ride or out for a hike and when things slow down a good book to read. Paul, Congratulations and Good Luck on retirement. Heuvelton District family will miss you and your dedication you have provided to the HCS students !
Brett Bailey shares with us the “Miracle on the Diamond”. A 2006 team member on a state ranked baseball team made up of 12 players ranging from 8th grade -12th grade . Brett a junior at the time made a miraculous catch in center field to end a state game which put his team on the road to the final 4 . Not only did this team play on the stage in a major league stadium but also played for a state championship. He tells of how each player brought a great work ethic, Pride and athleticism that was unique and made for a chemistry of a great team. The team unity and connections made for life long connections and friendships.
This episode Is a great listen with our Heuvelton History Teacher Jonathan Putney and his wife and Heuvelton Art Teacher Ashley Putney along with their children Abbey and Ross. They were able to share with us stories of rich tradition of Bulldog Pride full of wonderful connections with family and students. Two HCS alumni, parents and professionals, preserving through uncertain times while also caring on traditional values as a family .
Doreen Poulton 30 year veteran of Heuvelton Central as the Districts Superintendent Secretary and wife of David Poulton leading Band Director of the school. Doreen shares with us the History of the Instrumental Band and Marching Band of Heuvelton. Doreen also provides for our listeners an insightful impact that Dave and she has had on the lives of students and the community.
Mr. Sargent Heuvelton Central 6th grade teacher shares with us how he and his students are handling the impact and transition to on line learning. He also takes us back to the beginning of his career as the Heuvelton District’s Teacher and Basketball Coach where he shares prideful stories of the teams he coached and their accomplishments.
Megan Woodard 3 sport senior athlete, member of Whiz Quiz , National Honor Society and President of Student Council. Megan shares her stories as a new member of the cheer team and the teams success and state run. She also shares her feelings as member of the senior class and how COVID 19 school closure has impacted her plans and goals for the school year.
Senior Student Dan Pray at Heuvelton Central shares his pride of many of the programs he is invoked in including Learn to Lead, Baseball, Soccer and Trap Team . He also shares his plan for the future and the impact of online learning.
Jimmy Rheome talks about his bus runs delivering food and supplies during covid 19 school closure. Jimmy also shares memories of school sports bus runs, trap team and his favorite hunt’s. Jimmy shares his school memories while participating in the Heuvelton Central Band and being part of the great legacy of the school’s Band Director David Poulton.
