But the career change made by millennial money expert Tonya Rapley, was much more organic.
Rapley earned her Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from Florida International University and a Masters in Urban Policy Administration from Brooklyn College.
In 2013, Tonya decided to launch her blog, My Fab Finance, to hold herself accountable when it came to making better money decisions.
Now, her blog has launched her into a whole new career as a finance and business coach.
When you launched My Fab Finance about four years ago, what goals or expectations did you have?
It was really my accountability partner. My goal was to hold myself accountable to be a better version of myself financially. The eventually My Fab Finance grew into being a resource to help others with their finances. When I started that business my goal was to be the go-to site for millennial women when it came to their financial questions.
Your Black Enterprise cover seemed to be a turning point for you. What was that experience like, and what would you say is the key to building a brand or business that people want to talk about?
Consistently showing up. When I started my blog I learned that there are hundreds of thousands of blogs started each year but the majority of them don’t even make it to their second year. What also helped are collaborations with people, building the right relationships and not being afraid that those collaborations would water down my brand. And being wise about social media and making sure that my social media presence is authentic. Those are all important for someone who wants to build a business online.
At what point in your journey did you decide it was time to build your personal brand, and become a business coach, in addition to My Fab Finance?
When I began to realize I felt stifled by the limitations of My Fab Finance, because there’s so much more to me than being a finance brand. I wanted to show more of who I was behind the brand; like the fact that I have a gluten allergy now, I’m a newlywed and we’re planning to grow our family.
There are certain brands that I love that I couldn’t partner with because I didn’t think it was in the best interest of the goals of the My Fab Finance audience, but for those who were interested in my life outside of that, it was an alignment.
What’s one of the biggest mistakes or misconceptions that your clients make when it comes to money?
Not valuing the amount of money they spend on things. Sometimes we say it’s just a little here and there but that little bit adds up and I think they take for granted how much that little bit can add up over time. People think about the big things when it comes to money but they don’t think about the bigs things.
What advice do you have for those who are young or have no credit history, trying to build some?
Assess your options. Credit is about your relationship with debt, so if you have a poor relationship with debt or practice poor self-control then getting a credit card to build your credit might not be your best course of action. You might want to look into becoming an authorized user or getting a credit building loan to help you build your credit. Credit cards are the only way to build your credit, so look into the other options available to you.
What are some good strategies for repaying debts, that you’ve seen work?
Cutting back on lifestyle and really deciding that this is what you’re going to do and get it done by any means necessary. Also, setting goals and tackling one goal at a time or one credit card at a time. I’ve seen people take on a part time job and just use that income to pay off debt. You’re marking the money that you’re bringing in on the side for debt and debt only so you’re kind of double teaming your debt.
What tools or resources do you use to help you keep on track with your financial goals?
The financial success planner, honestly and truly because it has a calendar in it and it keeps me on track for bill due dates so I can avoid late fees. It also helps keep me on track with my debt repayment plant, and so I can look at what my target numbers are. I use Digit, which is an automatic savings app, which acts as an extension to your checking app that helps you save money. That’s a tool I use regularly, it will tell you your balance everyday. Of course Paypal, because I’m a business owner and I get money via Paypal and I pay people with it. I also use my mobile banking app but I’m pretty simple when it comes to my finances. As long as I know when I need to pay my bills I’m good.
I’m not one of those people who loves to do budgeting. I don’t have any budgeting apps – I didn’t like Mint. The banks I use have high security measures so it was disconnecting anyway. For me I make it a mission to review my purchases every morning and that keeps me on track. For example I spent $90 at the grocery store so looking at that I can say we have food in the house and I don’t need to spend any more on my food budget for the week.
How do you create work-life balance, now that you’re a full time entrepreneur?
Still working on that. I have to be honest with myself about project I have to be honest with myself about work. There are sometimes when I realize I can’t do everything. There was a challenge I was thinking about doing for the end of the year but now it doesn’t really make the most sense for me because I have a lot of important opportunities coming up for me in the next few weeks. For me it’s really about prioritizing time with the people I love and prioritizing me time.
One promise I made was taking at least two guilt free days off a week. An entrepreneur is very easy to overwork. My entire house feels like a sanctuary for me- we have Himalayan salt crystals in our bedroom and living room; candles are consistently burning in or home.
My environment is peaceful for me and that’s been [most important], making sure that I’m peaceful.
What’s the most rewarding part about what you do?
Helping change take place in people’s lives and seeing people turn that corner from feeling like they’re hopeless with their finances and making them hopeful. I think its important for everyone to have role models from all walks of life whether it’s in fashion, beauty, finance, tech, etc., so for someone to look at someone who looks like them, as being responsible with their money, is also rewarding. And then the freedom. We really own our time and if we don’t want to do something we don’t do it.
How has networking and sisterhood contributed to your experience as an entrepreneur? Who are some women that inspire you?
So many opportunities have come from sisterhood, my Fab Finance has grown because of that. I’m inspired by so many of the women around me, they inspire me to be a better woman and a better sister. My relationship with women has improved because of my business, once you realize that people aren’t your competition, it helps you in life once you start to look at people as assets instead of competition. It’s changed how I viewed women in the same spaces as me but also helps me see the power of women and the power of communities created by women.
Women that inspire include my mother, of course, she’s such a strong loving woman and the amount of love she has for her family encourages me to love others without limit. One of my mentors, Linda Sarsour, she’s a Muslim-American activist and she taught me very early to speak my truth and be unapologetic about who I am because authenticity is your power; Marsha Barnes of the Finance Bar one of the best women I know, I don’t think there’s a negative bone in her body.
Also, Rhonesha Byng of Her Agenda, she just kicks ass. She’s so young, hungry and focused. She’s such a connector and is going to get it done. No one ever slows her agenda, and she lives her brand.

Self-care is all anyone is talking about these days. In fact, the hashtag on Instagram currently has more than 2.5 million posts. But we know it takes a village to reach success, so when is it necessary to reach out to others to help heal us?
There aren't too many movies being made that show Black women just being human. Films that celebrate Black women being smart, funny, loud, outrageous and vulnerable should be celebrated, because Black women aren't always afforded that right.

Getting to the top for women can be really hard, because regardless of your occupation, there is a man making more money and getting more opportunities. Men get hired and promoted based just off of potential while women have to constantly prove themselves and overproduce to get recognition.
It was only 44 years ago that we saw the first woman run an Fortune 500 company. Of the 22 women who can claim that, only one is a Black women - Ursula Burns, former CEO of Xerox.

So what makes sisterhood the key to success for all women?
Support. Women supporting other women should come naturally. Women drive 80% of all consumer purchases, which means when you cater to women, you win. If you can get lots of women to support you, and you also support and invest in other women, you enable all females to be the best they can, and reach success.
Women understand women. If you'v ever had a woman as a boss, there were probably certain things you didn't have to explain. When working with other women, there's less pressure to not seem so family oriented and more aggressive about your work. When you build a sisterhood with women, especially the ones you work with, you're creating a support system that will be there through the personal and professional trials and tribulations.

Everyone can win. The "there can only be one" mentality and stigma that comes along with women who are ambitious can be very discouraging if you buy into it. Women in power have the ability to change the way things are done, whether they are entrepreneurs or not. Women who have decision making power can give other women promotions, fair salaries and opportunities to grow that they otherwise wouldn't be exposed to.

Amplifying strategy. According to a Huffington Post article, the women of the Obama Administration played this strategy for supporting each other very well. We've all been in meetings and made suggestions that were overlooked, until someone else (usually male) repeated it - and got all the credit.
What the women of the Obama Administration did was reiterate the good ideas their peers had, and give them credit for coming up with it to make their voices heard. This resulted in President Obama calling on and consulting more women.
“It’s fair to say that there was a lot of testosterone flowing in those early days. Now we have a little more estrogen that provides a counterbalance,” explained former White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett.
How has sisterhood impacted your success?
Building a real sisterhood comes from getting to know like-minded women through support, conversation and collaboration. Cultivating sisterhood through collaboration is a great way to ensure that your new relationships are built on a solid foundation, and have the potential to grow.
If you feed into what the movies and the media will tell you, you'll probably end up thinking that all women are catty and would prefer the company of men. Despite how women are portrayed on our television screens it's important to know what make a true sisterhood.
In the digital era we are operating in, there is no way around using social media to further your business, career and grow your network. But exactly how do you build genuine relationships online, that eventually turn into a meaningful connection?
It's no secret that women supporting one another is good not only for your career, but for your spirit. The benefits of connecting with other women in your career, and learning how to navigate a sisterhood are will stick with you forever.
Getting to know yourself as you get older can be a tough but necessary process. But when you decide to learn who you truly are, its important to know how you can approach this reflective time in your life.
Not knowing who we are can come in the form of a quarter-life crisis. According to the Guardian, about 86% of millennials experience a quarter-life crisis. Many millennials report having experienced periods of loneliness, depression, and insecurity. It's during these times of soul searching that you really have to do the work to figure out who you really are and what your place in the world is.
Here are five ways you can get to know yourself better and avoid a quarter-life crisis:
Journaling. Writing in a journal can be a great way to express yourself in a safe space. Whether you are recounting moments in your life or jotting down some affirmations to keep positive, keeping a journal is a therapeutic way to get to know yourself better. Keeping a record of what experiences make you feel good and bad can be a good system for analyzing your moods and thoughts.
Meditate. Another good way to get to know yourself is to practice self-care through meditation. When you meditate, you're putting everything out of your mind for moments of peace and silence.

Exercise. Blowing off steam and approaching your problems in a calm manner. Whether it be yoga, Pilates or even kick-boxing, exercise gives you time to think and reflect on your day. So if you are going through a time of disappointment, getting active can help to clear your mind for better choices and help you figure out what you want in life.
Travel alone. Solo travel is big now but if not to meet people, then definitely to get away from it all. Treating yourself to a solo trip might be just what you need to figure your life plans out and take evaluation of your current situation. You'll also get to know yourself better by having to make every decision alone and be completely emotionally independent.
Talk it out. Talking to yourself to figure out who you are and what you want out of your life isn't a bad idea. You can also go to therapy to work through any issues with a licensed professional. Feeling like you aren't close to yourself or going through a quarter-life crisis are completely normal and its always best to seek professional help when it comes to your mental health and happiness.
What do you do to get to know yourself better?
People tend to think that there is no way that you can have go out and have fun, alone but you can. Going out alone has many benefits and is sometimes when you'll have your most memorable experiences.
The Obama girls are becoming quite the influencers as they grow up. Although in the spotlight for the past 8 years, we hardly ever get to learn new things about the girls.
What does independence means for you? This is a question that you must ask yourself as you get older. Everyone has their own definition of independence, and often it changes over time.
It’s sad that even in 2017, the word “feminist” still holds a negative connotation. People, both men and women alike, often think of awful things when they hear the word feminist.
Many of the first Black women to do something, wasn’t too long ago and should remind us just how far we’ve come, but also how much work is left to do.
With more putting an emphasis on their health and work-life balance, more companies are creating flexjobs to accommodate their employees.
This includes, going part-time to work on your business or degree, taking more time with your kids or even working from home a couple times per week. It isn’t unusual either for an employee to come in with intentions of transitioning into a completely remote role.
Remote work isn’t just great for the worker, but the company too. It increases productivity, efficiency, morale while lowering stress, turnover and real estate costs. With millennials being very clear about what they expect in a workplace, it’s important to adjust to the changing times of the workforce. Working from home isn’t an American thing, it’s a global trend that’s changing the way we do business.
Here are 10 great companies that will hire remote employees:
Dell. Dell CEO Michael Dell has a goal to make half of his company remote workers by the year 2020. Sound like a crazy goal? Think again. People who work from home are more productive and often more engaged. Dell has made remote work a priority and has hundreds of roles available from accounting to project management.
American Express. American Express values the importance of work-life balance. The know that their employee want to do the work, but they can if there are things suffering in their personal lives. They've even won a flexjobs awards for being one one of the best places to work for remote employees.
Xerox. Xerox currently has more the 8,000 remote employees and is trying to add more. In fact, for the past 30 years Xerox has been allowing their employees to work remotely - before it become a trend. Virtual roles include customer service, data entry and software development.

Apple. Become an At Home Advisor with Apple and help customers with their technical difficulties from the comfort of your own home. Apple is always hiring for these positions and they will even train you. The tech giant offers paid time off, discounts and opportunities for advancement.
Salesforce. Recently, Salesforce announced that they are hiring for 150 remote positions. And this isn't only for customer service roles (which are great too). If you have experience in marketing, engineering, or management your next role could be with Saleforce.
Nielsen. Nielsen has been recognized for their efforts in diversity and inclusion, and now also allowing employees to work from home. They also just announced that they are hiring for 100 work from home opportunities
Adobe. There's a reason why Forbes named Adobe one of the world's most innovative companies - they never stop looking for ways to satisfy their customers or employees.
