Rachael Mutesi discussed the importance of loving oneself before getting into a relationship, and she credited her mother for teaching her this valuable lesson. Rachael mentioned that her mother, who has been married four times, always emphasizes the importance of putting oneself first and not compromising one's own identity or peace of mind. Rachael also discussed the bitterness that can exist between the sexes and touched on the traditional roles of men and women in relationships. She stated that she does not believe in compromise, at least not until children are involved. And she also held the belief that a woman should have the same freedom as a man in terms of sexual partners and should not be judged for it.

On the 20th Episode of 18th Avenue Podcast.com. My guest this week is digital artistry photographer Ric Matkowski. He was born & educated in Twirl, Saskatchewan. He started his career as an Engineer in the energy sector here in Alberta, then internationally, including Egypt, Uk, Scotland & the USA. Ric spent his childhood on the farm, his grandparents immigrated to Canada from Poland in those days, and farming was the only profession they knew. His father was a hands-on man who had a passion for learning but never had the opportunity to properly school. He homeschooled himself and went on to start a Radio & television business. His mother worked in various jobs & took correspondence courses at the university. Ric was no stranger to hard work; his family was not wealthy; he took summer jobs to cover college tuition. He would be the first to go to university and graduate, and for him, failure was not an option. Today Ric serves as VP to Calgary Camera Club; he is also Chair of professional photography of Canada Central Branch. Ric's artistic styles and work has been featured in various magazines, and his art was also selected for the 2020 Calgary Stampede exhibit pre-cancellation. She uses conspicuous, vibrant colours to evoke life in her art. Before the awards, before she was called @sydtheartiste, she was Sydonne Warren. In high school, she wanted to be a psychologist but soon discovered she didn’t like math. Raised by a single mom in Calgary, AB, Sydonne & her mom came to Canada when she was just three years old from Jamaica. After high school, while her friends took off to colleagues, she held on to a retail job as a store manager. Dissatisfied at her job, Sydonne did a two-year architecture program but could not find work and was back to square one. It wasn’t until she met her husband of now four years when he told her, “you are an artist, go be an artist. That crucial but straightforward advice has made Sydonne the artist we know today. Raced by a supportive grandfather (a scientist), a practical father (an engineer), and a loving mother (a school teacher). She taught young Aftab to read & write English in Grade one. Traditionally in Pakistan, children learn to read & write English in grade six. This head start will prove to be advantageous later on. Aftab is an electrical engineer, following in his father’s footsteps. He came to Canada on a Provincial Nominee Program in 2016 to find employment in his field. However, finding jobs in Canada has proven to be challenging. Today, Aftab is a model, actor, and vlogger. He documents his life in short vlog episodes and shares it with the world. The flip side is that Western workers in other countries cannot find employment in their chosen field but are usually heavily compensated. Parents divorced when I was five years old, married for over 12 years, nothing makes Brandon happier than spending time with his wife and 18th-month old boy. Brandon Des Brisay is a photographer living in Calgary, AB. Despite enduring emotional and physical abuse as a child, at 18, he was depressed. He changes his life after two of his close friends passes away.
A graphic design student at UBC, born to Malawian father and a Filipino mother, the oldest of three, Jordan remembers growing up in Calgary, AB… dealing with racism. He also talks about his favourite cuisine, closer to his father's relatives than his mother. Jordan hopes to finish school, open a studio and build video games.
