This week, we take on a haunting double feature from Australian filmmaking duo Danny and Michael Philippou. First up is their newest film, Bring Her Back, a moody, emotionally charged descent into grief and the supernatural that really showcases the directors’ growing horror universe. Then it’s on to their breakout hit, Talk to Me, the high-octane possession thriller that put the Philippous firmly on the map with its stylish scares and raw emotional undercurrent.

Third-chair guest Adam Beam is back, and fueling the conversation are standout brews from Belleflower Brewing and Turning Point Beer.

🎬 It’s another Wes Anderson-packed episode of Beer and a Movie! 🍻

We kick things off with 2025's corporate-espionage-filled The Phoenician Scheme, then circle back to the breezy beginnings of Wes Anderson’s career with Bottle Rocket. Returning guest Harold Ramos joins us again to unpack both films with his signature wit and thoughtful insight.

For The Phoenician Scheme, we cracked open Rainbow Sherbet from Prairie Artisan Ales — tart, colorful, and a little chaotic — while Harold sipped on Community’s Hop’d Water, a crisp and hoppy non-alcoholic option. Did it still bring the flavor?

For Bottle Rocket, we make our first-ever trip to Geary Brewing Co. and tried their Maine Summer Ale — crisp and classic, is it a perfect match for Anderson’s sun-soaked debut.

Crack a cold one and press play — this one’s gets deep into Anderson's career.

This week, we’re thrilled to welcome guest comedian Andy Gomez for his very first appearance—so buckle up for laughs, liquids, and bromantic explorations.

To match the whimsical vibe of Friendship, we crack open a THC seltzer from Trail Magic—because that’s exactly the kind of movie it is. While Texas holds its breath, waiting for the governor to sign off (or veto) on keeping or outlawing these fizzy, buzz-worthy drinks, we’re already in toast mode.

Next up, it’s time for classic buddy-comedy gold with I Love You, Man. To fuel our “I love you, bro” affirmations, we pop open a fresh pour from Equal Parts Brewing—a brew as balanced and dependable as a true friendship.

Tune in for a double feature that proves: whether it’s surreal comedy or heartfelt bromance, Beer and a Movie has got your perfect pairing.

On this week’s Beer and a Movie, the stakes are high, the hops are higher, and Tom Cruise is still running. We're joined by special guest Adam Beam for an explosive deep dive into Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, followed by a throwback to the tighty-whitey chaos of Risky Business. 🕶️🔥

To fuel the mission, we hit our 17th (!) visit to St. Arnold Brewing Co.—clearly we’ve joined a cult—and team up with Lone Pint Brewery for a beer lineup that’s bold enough to take on The Entity. 🍺💣

We unpack Cruise’s legendary stunts, debate whether Risky Business is 80s sleaze or a suburban satire masterpiece, and ask: How much backstory is required for a 'final' film?

This one’s got spies, suds, and sweaty existentialism—aka your perfect mission briefing.

This week, we dive deep into the emotionally intense and stylistically bold world of Trey Edward Shults, discussing his brand-new release Hurry Up Tomorrow and his powerful debut feature, Krisha.

From fractured families to spiraling tension, Shults knows how to shake an audience—and we brought in a guest who knows how to analyze the media behind the mayhem: Ethan Thompson (author, professor, and all-around pop culture brainiac) joins us for this rich double feature.

To pair with the emotional highs and lows, we sipped on:
🍺 Big Country Organic Beer's Hazy IPA – juicy and bold, just like Shults’ visual style
🍺 Golden Age Pilsner from Family Business Beer Co. – a crisp, classic lager perfect for reflecting on the ghosts of Thanksgivings past

Whether you’re a longtime Shults fan or just now catching the wave, this episode is packed with insights, tangents, and yes... a few beer-fueled theories.

We’re heading deep into horror-comedy territory with two blood-soaked, laugh-out-loud films: Clown in a Cornfield and the cult classic that started it all, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil — both from director Eli Craig.

Joining us is the incomparable Cris Olvera — Corpus Christi-based artist, designer, horror expert, and one of our favorite conversationalists. Cris brings sharp insights and a lot of laughs as we dig into how these films balance gore, satire, and surprisingly tender moments.

And of course, we had beers in hand:
🍺 Live Oak Brewing’s Hefeweizen – a smooth, classic wheat beer that never disappoints
🍺 Oskar Blues Dale’s All American IPA – bold, hoppy, and totally on brand for this week’s double feature

Listen now wherever you get your podcasts — and bring a beer. You’re gonna need it.

This week on Beer and a Movie, we paddle into cinematic surf culture with two wave-riding flicks: the new Nicolas Cage psychological thriller The Surfer and Bruce Brown's iconic 1966 documentary The Endless Summer.

Though they couldn't be more different in tone, these two films make an unexpectedly perfect pairing. The Surfer is a moody, mind-bending plunge into the dark side of beach life, while The Endless Summer rides smooth on a sun-soaked breeze, celebrating the joy and freedom of chasing waves around the world. Together, they show both the mythology and the madness that the ocean can inspire.

To keep the vibe frosty, we visited Sanchez Family Brewery for the first time and cracked open two of their clean, crushable pilsners—perfect for post-surf (or post-movie) refreshment.

If you like beachy chaos, classic vibes, cold beer, and hot takes, this episode’s your jam. Grab your board and your pint glass. 🌊🍺

We start with the heat of the moment—Ryan Coogler's latest film Sinners, already generating serious buzz—and then rewind to where it all began with his deeply affecting debut, Fruitvale Station. Special guest Josh Deleon joins us for the ride, adding sharp takes and good company.

Both films showcase the dynamic power of Michael B. Jordan, and we explore how Coogler's voice has evolved from intimate storytelling to epic, emotionally charged cinema.

We’re pairing these films with two bold brews: the citrus punch of Austin Beerworks's Bloodwork Orange IPA and our first taste of Surly Brewing, courtesy of their tropical Mango Axe Man.

Great films, great beer—what more do you need?

We start with whiskey and it goes Cage-style bonkers from there. We celebrate #350 by diving Back Into the Cage with OG co-host Carlos Cooper along for the ride.
As usual, it’s a triple feature of Nicolas Cage greatness:
🎬 Peggy Sue Got Married
🎬 The Rock
🎬 Matchstick Men

And the beers? They're after the whiskey and it's all absolutely out of control:
🥃 The Nic Cage-inspired Buffalo Trace El Cerrito Liquor Store Pick custom Trace/Off
🍺 2015 Rare Bourbon County Brand Stout
🍺 Ghost in the Machine and Holy Ghost from Parish Brewing
🍺 Power Bomb DIPA from SpindleTap Brewing

It’s fun, it’s chaotic, it’s MEGA-SIZED.

We’re strapping on our boots and diving into the chaos of combat with two heavy-hitters: The gritty new war flick Warfare, co-directed by the legendary Alex Garland, and the modern classic Saving Private Ryan—because you can't talk war films without this Spielberg tour de force.

For the brews?
🍺 Prairie Artisan Ales 'Merica Y’all – unapologetically loud.
🍺 (512) Brewing (512) Pils – smooth, reliable, and ready for deployment.

Joining us in the trenches: comedian Connor Stewart—bringing laughs, hot takes, and emotional trauma.

This week, we raise a glass to one of the greats—Gene Hackman. From quiet paranoia to chaotic patriarch, we revisit two standout performances: The Conversation (1974) and The Royal Tenenbaums. It’s a Hackman double feature anchored by two of our favorite directors—Francis Ford Coppola and Wes Anderson.

Returning guest Adam Beam joins us for the cinematic breakdowns and drops a major hot take you won’t see coming. Let’s just say, things get... spirited.

We’re sipping on a good, old-fashioned Sam Adams Boston Lager as we continue our mission to visit iconic craft beer brands, and also cracking open a German IPA (?!) from Alstadt Brewery.

Classic films. Bold beers. And a little bit of controversy. What more could you want?

We crack open some cold ones and dive into the world of mystical unicorns, dark fairytales, and bizarre fantasy storytelling. First up, we take on A24’s wild new entry, Death of a Unicorn—a movie that dares to mix corporate greed, magical creatures, and absurdist humor. Then, we rewind to Ridley Scott’s 1985 classic, Legend, where Tom Cruise battles Tim Curry’s devilish Darkness in a visually stunning, synth-laden adventure.

This episode also marks the beginning of our quest to tick off some of the Great American Craft Beers oversights that deserve a spot on the Mt. Rushmore of Craft Beer. Which legendary brew makes the cut? And does it pair well with unicorn-related chaos?

Grab a drink and join us as we break it all down—cheers! 🍻🎬

It's been 50 episodes since we last stepped into the "cage," so we find ourselves there again with a selection of three films with Nicolas Cage in lead performances. Joe's pick is Drive Angry, a 2011 supernatural actioner riding the wave of 3D excitement in the post-Avatar moment in which it arrived. Dave selects Bringing Out the Dead, a relatively underperforming Scorsese vehicle that had more critical love than it did financial returns. And, of course, Carlos is back for the fun with his selection of Cage's Oscar-winning turn as a hopelessly alcoholic writer in Leaving Las Vegas. There are dark themes to explore but still a lot of fun to be had and beer to be drank on this 2023 Cage Match episode!

When our returning guest Pam Brouillard told us that she would be bringing back some beers from her roadtrip to Wisconsin, we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to visit some films with Midwestern settings. For the first time in recent memory, a Finnish action film showed up at our local multiplex, and we just had to find out what might warrant such a wide release. This week finds us delving back into the singularly visionary mind of David Lynch as we approach Mulholland Drive, a film that wasn't initially intended to be a film but that nonetheless is now ranked as the 8th best of all time in the 2022 Sight & Sound poll, and we pair it with an earlier film that also had its origins in televisual storytelling. Playing with tropes of soap opera, police procedurals, and horror, these  aren't always the easiest for casual viewers to digest, but your intrepid hosts - along with returning guest Harold Ramos - do their best to parse through these thorny and often cryptic films tinged with sly humor and indelible sights and sounds.

Its all about grown-up drama and cinematic style this week on BaaM, but you may want to put on your dancing shoes, just to be safe.

With the streaming arrival of 2022 critical favorite EO, we took the opportunity to look at this rather unorthodox Polish film which provides glimpses of the range of human behavior, especially as pertains to treatment of animals, through the eyes of the titular donkey at its center. As our companion film, we review our fifth overall from the top ten of the 2022 Sight and Sound critics poll, Yasujiro Ozu's Tokyo Storyfrom 1953, a classic of Japanese cinema that offers a methodical and patient peek at a dispersed family, tapping into some very relatable themes of generational drift and disconnect. Helping Dave and Joe wade through all this are returning guest Kyle Ferguson, our first proper Czech beer (sorry, Poland!), and a return visit to Hitachino Nest to see if can overcome the spoiled offering we had tried waaaaaay back in episode 5. Forget Wong Kar-Wai's whip pans, this episode may cause some whiplash with its shifting between its A- and B-pictures. This week, we invite back returning guest Kailey Diaz to help us take on two films from Darren Aronofsky, a director who regularly plunges into stories about characters who struggle with addiction and obsession. His latest, The Whale, generated controversy even before its release for its casting and over concerns that it would be fatphobic. In wide release now, it is actually generating a lot of Oscar buzz for the controversially cast actor, Brendan Fraser, for whom this is being seen as a comeback moment akin to one that Aronofsky had earlier created with Mickey Rourke in the 2008 film, The Wrestler. With significant thematic overlap between these films, we go deep into discussing their characters' motivations and the successes (and failures) of the performances that bring them to life on the screen. We also drink some hazy IPAs for good measure.

With returning guest and former co-host Ethan Thompson back in the mix, it's a double new release episode this week on Beer and a Movie. First up is James Cameron's long-gestating sequel to his long-gestating blockbuster Avatar, which has started off well enough at the box office but needs significant staying power to justify its costs. The second film is the comparatively more modest semi-autobiographical film from Steven Spielberg, The Fabelmans, which has been getting love from critics but not necessarily stoking the interest of general moviegoers.

It's dark comedy and satire this week on Beer and a Movie with us taking on Ruben Östlund's Palme d'Or winning film Triangle of Sadness and Mary Harron's now-classic adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis's American Psycho. Joe and Dave are happy to welcome back past guest, Dr. Anthony Zoccolillo, to help them make sense of these provocative mediations on human nature, class, and power, and they all gain critical support from not one, but two, hazy IPAs on deck.

When a "Weird Al" biopic was announced, the BaaM crew knew right away that we would need to cover such a monumental cinematic event. Now that it's dropped, Joe recruited a longtime film friend, Sean McLain, to join us for a fun conversation about films that play fast and loose with pop music history, including a look back at 24 Hour Partly People, a film that seeks to convey the energy of the punk/post-punk/"Manchester" scene. Somehow we make it all work despite some technical difficulties along the way.

Coming off a full month of horror, we take a gander at something at least horror-adjacent, Wendell & Wild, a new Henry Selick stop motion animated feature - his first in 13 years - written with Jordan Peele and including the voice talent of longtime Peele collaborator Keegan Michael Key. Does this reach the heights of his past efforts such as Nightmare before Christmas and Coraline? We pair it with an earlier stop motion feature from Czech legend, Jan Svankmajer, which offers his unique interpretation of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland.

To make this all work, we bring in an original host from BaaM's past, Ethan Thompson, and we enjoy some hazy offerings, both of an alcoholic and non-alcoholic variety. There's a little something for nearly everyone in this episode!

The final episode of All Horror October 2022 finds us watching two horror films selected by longtime friend and listener Kyle Ferguson who also joins us in the discussion. First up is a low budget H.P. Lovecraft adaptation that has built up an incredible cult following over the years. This is followed by our discussion of a film that, though initially seen in festivals in 2007-2008, never truly got the theatrical distribution intended for it until just this year.

It also happens to be the occasion of our 500th beer review, for which we pick a seasonal craft ale that many of you fine listeners can likely find on the shelves of your local beer emporiums. Sip along with us!

It's a scintillating new entry in our All Horror October programming where we take on two very recent releases in the genre. Halloween Ends is the final installment of the branched trilogy from David Gordon Green/Danny McBride taking the original Halloween characters into our present day, whereas Pearl is a technicolor-drenched step back in the X universe to a fantasy (or nightmare) vision of 100 years ago when another pandemic was raging and films were becoming the stuff of dreams. With horror riding high again at the box office, we invite a return guest, Josh Deleon, to discuss the current state of horror. We also revisit one beer from our past - a rare Pumpkin beer that has pleased us before - and acquaint ourselves with a new pale ale from the west coast.

All Horror October rolls along with a double feature of cryptic-based horror films. To bring some deeper knowledge to this episode, the hosts of cryptid podcast 50 States of Terror, Anthony and Kailey Diaz, join Dave and Joe for what turns out to be a lively and fun discussion. Learn about what is and is not a cryptid, what such creatures might signify within film and popular culture, and to what extent mustache twirling is necessary for what we do every week.

Everybody enjoys some libations (there's even a couple returning brews!), so grab whatever listening device you prefer so we can get down to business.

Also, be sure to check out 50 States of Terror on all your preferred podcast platforms!!!

A BaaM tradition returns with our first episode of All Horror October, which happens to also be our final episode with regular co-host Carlos in the mix. We look at two horror films from one of Carlos's favorite filmmakers, Kevin Smith, who is not generally known for overt attempts to frighten audiences. Hear our thoughts on these unique entries in Smith's body of work as we bid a fond farewell to our great friend and collaborator.

And, yes, with Sober September in the rearview, we are back to drinking (not near) beer!

This episode finds us contemplating Don't Worry Darling, a new release that is being heavily discussed but for many of the wrong reasons, as well as a clear conceptual predecessor to that film whose cult reputation has made it a cultural touchstone.

We also close out our month of sampling non-alcoholic beers.
