Most of us never learned how to train our brains, which is why most of us needlessly settle, struggle and worse – suffer. My name is Chris Dorris and I want to make Brain Training mainstream. This is my series TOUGH TALKS: Conversations on Mental Toughness.
I’m interviewing badasses from all walks of life, on what Mental Toughness means to them, and their unique approaches to strengthening their mind.

How many people do you know who were inducted into TEN - yeah, you heard it - TEN different Halls of Fame?!
How many coaches do you know who were the National Coach of the Year 8 times? Or won 6 National Championships? Coached the ONLY undefeated team in NCAA Division 1 Golf history? Is the PAC 12 Conference Coach of THE CENTURY?!?! And the list goes on.
Well, you're about to meet her. Coach Linda Vollstedt is her name and I sat down recently with her to have an epic conversation during which she was remarkably generous with sharing her secrets to extreme success.
And you might be surprised by some of the methodologies that she relied upon to win so damn much. LOVE is one of them. LOVE. And she preaches that unapologetically. When someone says to her, "Oh you used 'soft skills'?" she just points to the trophy case and says, "If those are soft, I guess."

I interviewed my dear friend and mentor, Dr. William Maxwell. We delved into EQ (emotional quotient) and its relevance in predicting success. We talked about the power of thinking and its impact on our lives. Dr. Maxwell shared how he initially became fascinated with thinking and the importance of addressing the falling IQ of children. The conversation touched on the potential for humans to evolve beyond racism and the role of travel in broadening perspectives. Dr. Maxwell emphasized the importance of family strength and the impact it has on a child's success, the idea that every child is a potential genius, and we explored ways to strengthen the mind, such as listening to great music and playing games. Dr. Maxwell shared the Inventive Quotient, a series of games he designed to enhance intelligence and problem-solving skills. And we wrapped our conversation with his belief in the evolution of the human race toward universal thinking. Here are some highlights and key takeaways you can expect:- How we use our mind shapes our lives, and by getting our mind right, everything else falls into place.- The falling IQ of children is a serious problem that needs to be addressed.- EQ (emotional quotient) is a better predictor of success than IQ (intelligence quotient).- Humans have the potential to evolve beyond racism and embrace universal thinking.- Family strength is the number one determinant of success, and the love and support from family play a vital role in a child's development.- Every child has the potential to be a genius, and it is important to create an environment that nurtures their talents and interests.- Listening to great music and playing games can strengthen the mind and enhance cognitive abilities.- The human race is evolving toward universal thinking and embracing the interconnectedness of all beings.Key Episode References:• "Thinking" - Edited by William Maxwell: A book on the expanding frontier of human thought• "The Biology of Love" by Humberto Maturana: A book on the biological and emotional basis of love and human relationships • "Culture Against Man" by Jules Henry: A book on the negative effects of American culture on individual and social well-being• "The Geography of Genius" by Eric Weiner: A book on the connection between place and creativity throughout history • "Super Parenting: Child Rearing for the New Millennium" by William Maxwell: A book on the best practices to nurture genius in children • "Physics of the Impossible" by Michio Kaku: A book on the scientific exploration of the world of phasers, force fields, teleportation, and time travel https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physics_of_the_Impossible• "Beyond Einstein" by Michio Kaku: A book on the cosmic quest for the theory of the universe • Oneness University (India): A center for learning and enlightenment inspired by Sri Amma and Sri Bhagavan • Inventive Quotient Game - Available for purchase through American Creek Academy (under construction): A patented course in logical reasoning for children

What's the most important trait/skill of a CEO?
Why is it so much more important to hire the RIGHT person vs the "best" person for the job?
What does it mean to not let perfection be the enemy of good?
How does a corporate culture empower its people to feel safe enough to make mistakes?
What does it mean to "execute with extreme prejudice"?
These are some of the questions we explore with our guest and CEO of the technical education industry leader Career Certified, Gary Weiss.
Gary is a remarkable leader who understands what most leaders do not regarding how to get the most out of your people. "Enable and Empower" is one of his mottos - values, actually. He knows how to build and sustain a culture characterized by trust (can you confirm that, X-Man?). He creates a space where great thinking is nurtured.
All of that has a lot to do with why his company is absolutely demolishing it in their industry.
And he's got Philly roots!
And at the very end of our dialog, we discuss something spectacular that Gary and his wife, Jodi, are doing together to help reduce the amount of unnecessary human suffering in their community. Totally heartwarming!

I'm so thrilled to be able to introduce you to an absolute Powerhouse (in every way). His name is Siavash Fashi. He's the owner of the enormously successful small gym (very very small, and apparently wonderfully high-vibe and chaotic!) in Culver City, CA named SixPax Gym.
Siavash left Iran, where bodybuilding was illegal and where he dealt with cancer, poverty, and political turmoil. After seven years as a refugee in England and a year in a U.S. prison for using a fake passport, he headed to SoCal to achieve his dreams. With nothing to his name except grit and determination, he was able to build one of the most profitable small gyms in the country.
In our Tough Talks conversation today, we only get through 1/3 of the originally intended content because his story is SO compelling and chock-full of Mental Toughness GOLD.
This guy is a Master Mental Coach and he doesn't even know it!
His story is mesmerizing. Prepare to be in rapture and to be mind-blown by this guy who totally gets the power of using your mind intelligently to create excellence from suffering!
And he JUST published his first book, Small Gym, Big Results! You can find it here:

"We are on a mission to move minds with mushrooms."
That's a quote from his website, www.getumbo.com. His name is Jake "The Snake" Plummer and he is a former NFL quarterback turned mushroom farmer.
His new chosen assignment in life is to remind us here in the Western cultures about the profound healing qualities of functional (and hopefully soon-to-be-legalized) psychedelic mushrooms.
Join us for a deep dive into the magical nature of "The Fungal Queendom"!
p.s. Jake even offered The Tough Talks Tribe a discount on any products. I share that discount code at the very end.

His speaking career started at age 8 when his iconic minister father had him speak before a church congregation of thousands in his native Ghana. He himself was ordained a minister at age 14. He didn't ask for any of that. So at age 18 he won a green card in the Ghanaian lottery, followed his intuition, and moved to LA, alone, knowing no one, with $800 in his pocket.
He is now one of the world's most recognized leaders in the world of personal development and his name is Kute Blackson.
In our remarkable conversation today, Kute blesses the Tough Talks Podcast Tribe with some legit wisdom pearls!
When I asked him to tell us what he does, his response was, "I don't do. I undo." And he elaborated beautifully upon that.
He also gives us a series of profound questions that we can ask ourselves to help free ourselves from the conditioning of our pasts that governs us.
And he makes clear what it means to "surrender" - and it ain't what most think. In fact, he went on to say, "Surrender is the most powerful thing we can ever do!"

From Physical Therapist to Co-Owner of the Philadelphia 76ers NBA team to Zen Monk, our guest today is NOT TYPICAL!He IS, however, something very few people ever achieve which you can argue is far less likely than any of the above. He is a Philadelphia LEGEND!His name is Pat Croce and I have known about him for most of my life (having grown up in the Philly area and being a Philly sports fanatic). As a serial entrepreneur, Pat has created many business ventures including my former favorite bar in Key West, Florida (he sold it off and I am not one bit pleased about that!) as well as restaurants and museums in St. Augustine. FL.He's always been fascinated with Pirate Life! He even wrote a kick-ass book on it entitled, The Pirate Handbook.About eight years ago, Pat embarked on a deep inward journey where he unplugged and immersed himself in reading, woodworking, Chinese calligraphy and stillness.A cancer diagnosis inspired his reemergence and we got him back now. And our wildman Philly Boy ain't the same! He's a Zen Master now! He's The Philly Buddha! Imagine THAT!Well, you don't have to imagine. I'm bringing him to you. And you're gonna love him! Tune in as we explore the distinction between pain and suffering, the wisdom of following your enthusiasm, and how to strengthen your "Let It Go Muscle."

Who says that real personal growth and healing need to be gradual?!
Well, not this guest.
Today we have World Renowned Therapist and Best Selling Author, Marisa Peer, on the show. Marisa is the founder of Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT). RTT is a massively disruptive approach to helping people heal and grow. Because it's - well - RAPID!
She explains to us how our suffering arises from weak thinking and the terrible stories (that are lies) that we tell ourselves all day long. AND, how to stop doing that by reauthoring profound stories and replaying those over and over to become our truths.
She also tells us about a beautiful project she started to help youth create and keep confidence for themselves (this is dear to my heart).
I am beyond thrilled to be able to share Marisa and her expertise with you today!

What do you do when the wolf knocks on your door? What if the wolf is already inside??
In light of the mass layoffs rippling through the economy, it's particularly important for us all as leaders, employees, business owners, and coaches to be in the practice of Mental Toughness.
This week my team and I have put together a special highlight reel. This collection of poignant and practical tools from world-class leaders and coaches can help us (remember) to use our minds to ~~survive~~ THRIVE during these times. Have you ever met someone who is perpetually driven by both the creation of excellence AND fun?! Well, whether you have or you haven’t, you’re about to. His name is Reggie Marable and he is a big-time Sales Exec with a fan base larger than the Atlanta Braves! (He's from Atlanta, aka the ATL.)
Reggie truly gets what Mental Toughness means. He has applied Mental Toughness practices to everything he's done in life. He played professional football. He was recently named to the prestigious 100 Black Men of Atlanta organization which creates educational and economic opportunities for African American youth in the ATL. And after Salesforce (where he has been a sales leader for the last 6 years) acquired Slack for $27B (yes, with a "B") in the summer of 2021, they offered Reggie the enormous responsibility to run one of its largest orgs, CMT (Communications, Media, and Technology). For good reason.
In our convo, we discuss some of the practices that he uses to keep himself perpetually inspired and some stellar leadership practices that he relies upon to keep his team inspired as well - especially in challenging times, like now.
Reggie is also an inspirational quote dispenser! Which is awesome. And what’s more awesome is he lives by them – he walks his talk.
We open up the convo today to explore some of the greatest fears in today’s economic climate, as well as some of the greatest Mental Toughness practices and disciplines you can use to create excellence in some really challenging times.

Attracting and retaining top talent, helping that talent be and stay clear on their "WHY", maintaining a "healthy paranoia", and demonstrating authentic humility are a few of the most important things that the CRO of Black Swan Data, David Delnero, identifies as keys to success in these challenging times.
I have had the privilege of watching David ascend in the ranks over the course of the last decade and it came as no surprise when he was chosen to lead the sales organization at Black Swan. He is as high as they get when it comes to integrity and you don't need to be in the tech sales industry to benefit from the wisdom he drops here.

One of my favorite Mental Toughness Mantras is "Create The State, Don't Wait."
Three years ago I had the remarkable privilege of discussing not waiting to create the state of inspiration with the one of the world's most successful coaches and prolific authors, Steve Chandler.
The episode was so well-received that we've decided to republish it, not only for those of you who may have missed, but also as a reminder to all of us of some simple and practical ways to intentionally create inspiration - one of that most powerful states which leads to the rapid creation of excellence.
This guy is the best speaker I have ever seen and heard. And he's won numerous awards for it.
He's also written about 40 books that have been translated into over 25 languages.
He is funny as hell. Sneaky funny. You listen to this guy and you laugh as you learn.
I am so super pumped to bring you THEE Godfather of Coaching!

People in the industry make a pretty convincing argument that the Enterprise Software Industry is the most competitive industry on the planet at the moment. And that means, if you’re interested in creating excellence in that realm, Mental Toughness is mighty handy.

Have you ever heard (or said), "There's just not enough time in the day." Or, "I just wish I had more time." Or, "There's a time for work and a time for play."
Our Tough Talks Guest today, Joe Perrone, Time Wizard (as I like to call him), is here to debunk all of that. Joe made the decision several years ago after a medical emergency to reorganize and reprioritize the way he uses time. My guest today is Dr. Troy Melendez. Troy and I went to graduate school together and he is easily one of the most intelligent and fascinating people I have ever known. Wizardly intelligent. He is a therapist who helps folks with addiction recovery. Troy, himself, was addicted to painkillers and that addiction escalated to a very serious and long opioid addiction.
Troy had a remarkable experience with DMT (a hallucinogenic drug also known as “the Spirit Molecule”) before he got clean. It altered his life and he shares that riveting story with us (I was legitimately in rapture as he told that story). And, we dive deeper into the possibilities that certain psychedelic drugs possess for helping people heal from trauma, depression and addiction.

The Greatest Athlete in the World! That's the title our guest earned himself when he won the Olympic Gold Medal for the Decathlon in Atlanta in 1996. We have Dan O'Brien in the Tough Talks studio today and we get to pick the brain of one of history's greatest athletes on things like mental preparation and how to convert "failure" (epic failure) into, well, literally, gold.
Go search YouTube for Dan and Dave 1992 and you can watch the hilarious Reebok commercials they made to hype up the battle that was to be had in Barcelona between America's top two decathletes. It didn't unfold the way anyone expected. Or wanted.

Our very first ever Tough Talks Podcast guest is back for a cameo! But this time he’s different. He’s had quite the transformation in the last 5 years since that first ever episode. Now he’s “Half Monk, Half Assassin.” Before I think he was a bit more of the assassin.
His name is Jon Hunter and he has lived his entire professional career in the world of Enterprise Software Sales and Sales Leadership. He’s a CRO and an advisor. He’s a husband, father, brother, leader, coach, sports enthusiast, movie buff, martial artist, writer and podcaster. And he has spent his entire life committed to his own development, growth, excellence and impact.

What a blessing it is to have this Angel of a woman as a dear friend and colleague and guest on the Tough Talks Podcast! Her name is Mary Bea Porter-King. Google her if you haven’t heard her name before. She is a true hero – really. That’s not even close to a euphemism.
Mary Bea lettered in 4 sports at Arizona State University. Yeah, you read that right. Then she played on the LPGA Tour for 25 years. Then she co-founded the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association where she continues to preside as President. She’s the first ever pro golfer to serve on the Executive Board of The USGA. She’s also currently on the Board of The PGA of America where she runs the Youth player Development Committee.
All she does is serve. JUST WAIT until you hear THE story of her "worst shot" that has resulted in profoundly affecting tens of thousands of lives – maybe more! And DEFINITELY stay for the end. I'm pretty sure we were able to touch Mary Bea's soul with a surprise gift. It was moving to say the least.

According to this guy, Startup Entrepreneurs are CRAZY! In a remarkably impressive way. In this episode of Tough Talks we get to explore the inner workings of the minds of such entrepreneurs and specifically this particular one, Greg Head.
Greg is the Founder of Gregslist.com, a curated up-to-date list of local software companies that is used by thousands of founders, tech execs, investors, job seekers, and community leaders each month which is now available for tech communities in Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Dallas, Austin, Boston, Atlanta, Chicago, and Toronto.
He is also the founder of PracticalFounders.com, where he helps crazy software entrepreneurs to change the world – and do it THEIR WAY (ie, without huge VC funding)!
This is super cool because I coach SOOO many entrepreneurs in the tech industry but I’ve never interviewed someone like Greg who exists solely in that world on the mindset of attempting to create big things that, as he says, “usually don’t work!”

What's the point of Mental Toughness Training? Well, that's simple (and profound). We do the inner world work so that we are able to respond to all of life rapidly with grace, mastery, creativity, and enthusiasm. Mental Toughness Training involves strengthening our "response-ability." In other words, our ability to respond powerfully to all circumstances so that not only do we eliminate the unnecessary suffering we create for ourselves, but rather we create excellence faster and with less effort!
One of the most powerful ways to accomplish all of this is with the use of Mental Toughness Mantras - brief phrases that contain volumes of wisdom and that help us to elevate our states and create habitual, high-grade responses to ALL of life.
In this episode of Tough Talks: Conversations on Mental Toughness, I take you through three of the most powerful Mental Toughness Mantras that I rely upon in my coaching, speaking, and my very own training.

On December 2, 2006, after being in an 8 day medically induced coma, he woke up to discover he'd lost two comrades and both of his legs in an IED explosion serving in Iraq.
Here's his response upon this discovery: "None of this matters. I'm alive. And I'm thankful for that. There's one path - and that's forward."
His name is Retired Staff Sergeant John Kriesel, and let's talk about creating excellence from tragedy!
He is a Purple Heart recipient, a best-selling author, an international Keynote Speaker, and one funny Mo Fo! (He attributes much of his ability to respond so masterfully to his tragedy to the power of humor).
And wait 'til you see what happens about 60% of the way through the interview!!! It's never happened before in any of my Tough Talks episodes. EPIC!!!

Inherent within your passions are the mechanics for stratospheric success.
Sam Calagione, founder and brewer at Dogfish Head Brewery, is proof of that. Sam trusted his passion for crafting what he refers to as “off-centered” beers and 26 years later he has literally created a food and beverage (and lodging) dynasty! And he’s having a boatload of fun doing it. He is meticulous about a lot of things. The level of creativity he puts into his creations is astounding. He travels the planet to meet people and discover ingredients that have never before been used or combined, to create some of the most unusual brews in history.
He uses that same level of meticulousness in creating his remarkable culture. I’ve experienced it firsthand. It’s epic. The quality of customer service is remarkable. The lightness of being is intoxicating – even before your first sip!
I define success as having your life on your terms. We have a lot to learn from Sam about this!

“Nobody is watching and nobody cares.”
Do you feel inspired?
Wait until our guest today explains that. You’ll feel inspired then.
David Richman was an overweight, chain-smoking, homeless kid at the age of 18. He got a job at a Vegas fast food joint, worked 3 jobs at a time to work his way up the ladder, never went to college, wanted to start his own company, met with a room full of Angel Investors to try to get seed money for it, was immediately asked, “Where’d you get your MBA?” Wait till you hear his damn response!!!
He went on to run a $120M/yr revenue company and is now an award-winning author (he facilitates writing workshops, btw), speaker, and Endurance Athlete. And he’s a remarkably generous philanthropist.
And a killer storyteller! And does he have stories!!!

IYANLA!!! You heard it! Yep. That’s who our guest is for the 100th episode of The Tough Talks Podcast!!!
How cool is that?! The infamous, and brilliant – and fricking hysterical – Iyanla Vanzant discusses her own unique interpretation of what Mental Toughness and Mental Toughness Training even is. And it’s profound – as you might expect coming from her.
She teaches us how the mind is like a puppy, and if it isn’t trained…HA! NO WAY am I spoiling that moment. I’ll leave it at this, when she finished that analogy and told a story about it, I honestly almost fainted laughing. My face has never been so red in an episode! Hysterical and poignant.
Iyanla shares with us that we are all conditioned to forget how important we are, our divine nature, and how inter-connected we all are. She teaches us that the real work that we need to do in order to remember all of that is about UN-learning. And if we will permit ourselves to experience some stillness each day, we will reconnect to the source and struggle far less.
I am so thrilled to bring to you, for our 100th episode of Tough Talks, the magnificent Iyanla Vanzant!

What if you could have a massive transformation in your personal or professional life, or both, in only 30 minutes? Is that really possible? Well, according to my latest Tough Talks Podcast guest, World-renowned Hypnotist, Tim Shurr, it sure is.
Tim is The Geek Squad for your brain. He shows us the "shortcuts" on how to use our human supercomputers. He helps us free ourselves from old trauma/Trauma (he'll clarify that for you) quickly and permanently. And we all have some trauma. It's part of life. His mission statement starts with, "My mission is to end needless emotional suffering." And he is certainly a man on a mission.

Where are you on your Hero's Journey? Because you're on one. According to my guest on this episode of Tough Talks, everyone is on their own Hero's Journey.
His name is Christian LeFer and he helps people answer this question for themselves and then he helps them start Nonprofits! (If they want to.)
He's got an awesome definition of Mental Toughness and it isn't conventional. It even includes the word, "supple."
In this conversation, Christian and I dig deep into how we are BEING in life to help clarify if what we're DOING is in alignment. And he's a fellow Jersey Boy, so he's automatically badass.

What does it feel like to jump out of a plane 370 times in one year - when you can't feel your legs below the knees because you have MS?
How does someone with Multiple Sclerosis who has had zero pain-free days in over 2 decades, and takes absolutely no pain meds, still live a profoundly full and successful life?
Our guest, Dr. Kevin Payne, answers those and a few other monumental questions in this episode of The Tough Talks Podcast.
Dr. Payne informs us that 2/3 of our health outcomes aren't based on medical variables but rather on cognitive, behavioral, social, and environmental ones. And we open up a couple of those buckets to bring you some golden nuggets.
If you or someone you love suffers from a chronic illness, this is a must-see/listen! And even if you don't have a chronic illness, Kevin's wisdom bomb will serve you profoundly as well.

"If we're out on the ocean in rough seas and you're leaning over the rail getting seasick and I come over to you and put my arm around you and say, 'I'm so sorry you're feeling so crappy' - that's sympathy. If I start puking with you, THAT'S empathy!"
That was what the CEO of The WD-40 Company, Garry Ridge, said in response to my question, "How do you define empathy?"
Garry relies heavily upon empathy as one of the most powerful skills that great leaders use to create a work environment characterized by emotional safety. And he refers to his leaders as coaches. In fact, he refers to ALL of his employees as coaches.
The employees at The WD-40 Company aren't a "team" - they're a TRIBE. Garry's leadership approach is based upon his deep research on Tribal cultures and the 7 characteristics that show up in any tribal group you can name. And that approach works! The company is killing it and the employees are pretty pumped to be there. In fact, 99% of employees say that they love to tell people that they work for WD-40 Company.
The company doesn't sell oil in a can. That's boring. They don't stop squeaking. That's boring. They create positive, lasting memories. That's amazing. And I can attest to that. I share my own amazing WD-40 memory at the end of the interview.
If at all possible, be ready to take notes. Garry drops a lot of wisdom here.

So now that your career is going to be totally obsolete soon, what are your plans?
You do realize that Artificial Intelligence is completely disrupting life as we know it, right? And that it's impossible to predict the magnitude of that disruptiveness?
How do you plan to survive? Oh, wait, that may be an irrelevant question as well. In fact, I'm hoping that I'll be out of a job. I'm hoping that AI will make this whole "Mental Toughness" business a thing of the past. AI will make life such that Mental Toughness isn't even needed because our needs are all met and we are free to experience all the magic that life has to offer.
At least that's one way to envision what's right around the corner (or already here) with Artificial Intelligence.
And our guest today, Dr. Alan D. Thompson, AI Expert, has some truly mind-blowing information to share with us about the impending effects of AI, and how he sees it illogical to assume that AI could bring disaster. But who knows?
What we can count on is that life is about to change. In ways that we aren't even capable of imagining yet.

Our remarkable guest today, Laban Ditchburn, was in the throes of darkness for a very long time. Once he decided to heal his body, he also healed his mind and soul and has since committed to inspiring people to show up BIG in their lives.

Have you ever wondered what it's like to meet God? And then to tell God you're not ready to go yet? To feel overwhelming peace and clarity and calm? Then to have God ask you if you're sure! To say, "Yeah, I'm sure." Then to have God give you 4 Principles to return with and to share?

Do you know what “commission breath” is? It’s a metaphor for a sales rep who’s so hungry for a deal, they will say or do anything just to get it. They crave commission so badly that prospects smell it on their breath a mile away. And it’s repulsive. And popular.
Our guest today, Ian Koniak, is an established badass in the world of Enterprise Sales. He was the #1 Strategic Account Executive in the Enterprise Select Division of Salesforce.com. That’s a big deal. And the product of a lot of big deals.
In our conversation, Ian takes us through the shifts he made from being OK (and addicted to several substances and vices) to being The Best by getting ALL IN and making the DECISION to get “In Alignment” and to prioritizing other’s success over his own.

Why did Alan Alda always jump around all over the place before going onto the set to record a scene for Mash?
What is "The Yips" and can you get "Life Yips"?
Why do some of us choke when it comes time to shine and some of us don't?
Mental Toughness or Mental Integrity?
The Zone or Brain Synchronicity?
These are some of the fascinating questions and distinctions that our esteemed (Legendary!) Sport Psychology Consultant and Entrepreneur, Dr. Debbie Crews, adresses in our latest episode of Tough Talks.
Dr. Crews has appeared on countless TV shows including NBC Dateline, The Golf Channel and Scientific American Frontier with Alan Alda discussing all things mental about golf and life.

Is it possible that all of us are, or were, addicted on some level to the need for approval? Fundamentally, what really IS any addiction? What's the difference between being clean & sober vs. being In Recovery? If you've ever been addicted to substances or behaviors like sex or gambling, were you an addict before you even started "using"?
These are just a few of the fascinating questions that we explore in this episode of Tough talks with guest, Marc Schmallen, Founder/CEO of Choice Recovery Path. This conversation went in an entirely different direction than I had anticipated, and thank God for that.
Marc started using before he was 10 years old. He spent years homeless on the streets of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Now he has done his healing and is in service to those who would benefit profoundly from doing their own.

What if I told you that you could choose your mental state from moment to moment depending on which state would serve you right then? What if I told you you could choose which neuromodulators (she'll explain that) to activate at will?
What if I told you that you can become a NeuroNinja? And what if I told you I have THE NeroNinja Extraordinaire as my guest today? Well, consider yourself told!
She's back for round 2 and is going to blow your minds - or maybe I should say teach you how to best USE your mind - and her name is Dr. Alison Arnold (Doc Ali) and I am super pumped to share with you her and her newest research in the field of neuroscience applied specifically to peak performance!

Our guest today was The Naval Commander of the Oliver Hazard Perry Class Guided Missile Frigate. It was a DREAM career. One that he aspired to and worked tirelessly for his entire life. They were deployed in The Black Sea during the 2014 Sochi Olympics directly off the coast of Russia. They were so close to shore, they could see the Olympic Torch - as well as some other Russian "assets" who were clearly interested in their presence there. In one minute he was living his dream. And in literally the next minute his entire life changed - and his entire identity went with it. Until he re-created himself.
His name is Dennis Volpe and he's going to share his amazing story of crisis and resilience.

We got him back! He's back for round 2 (of 3). His name is Steve Sims and he really is the guy who gets shit done. And it ain't just any shit. It's crazy shit. He's a high-end concierge. He pulls off miracles for affluent people. And we have a lot to learn from his level of thinking.
Today we unpack my favorite story of his. He managed to get the museum in Florence, Italy that houses the most famous sculpture on Earth, The Statue of David, to shut down in order to host a private dinner for his client at the foot of the statue. That's never been done before. But that isn't even the wildest part. Wait till you see what else he managed to pull off so he could REALLY wow his client!
And listen to how simple he makes it all sound - this business of pulling off miracles!

What is the ONE thing we do more than anything else in life after breathing? LISTENING. And how much formal training have you had in being a phenomenal listener. Who cares? YOU DO! We learn as we go through life. Some of what we learn serves us very well, like how to speak, how to write, how to use a computer, how to play a sport or an instrument, or that we stop at a red light. Some of what we learn does NOT serve us, like how to complain, how to doubt ourselves, how to use substances to self-medicate versus doing the deeper healing work, how to judge others and ourselves negatively, or how to be a “Go-Getter.”
Wait. What? What was that last one? Isn’t it generally agreed upon that being what we call a “go-getter” is an impressive thing? After all, it’s a “dog eat dog world” out there and you have to “look out for #1” right?
Unless it really isn’t, and the actual real laws of success involve the antithesis of that “me-first” mentality.
Well, that’s precisely what we’re exploring here today with our guest, the co-author of the world-famous book/movement, The Go-Giver, Bob Burg. In this episode of Tough Talks, Bob brilliantly, magically, articulately, beautifully, and also quite humbly guides us through The 5 Laws of Stratospheric Success.

In December of 2019, Sal Ponzio was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer of the esophagus, liver, stomach, intestines, and lymph nodes. He was given three months to live and was told to sell off his assets and prepare to live the best he could for those 3 months.
After spending one of those months in disbelief, he had an epiphany and he made a decision, "I'm not going out like this." He has been recovering now for about 15 months and things are looking good but he isn't out of the woods.
He uses an American Football analogy. When he was given his diagnosis and prognosis, the rival team (death) was on the one-yard line about to score the winning blow that would seal the game. Now he's turned it around. He stopped them and now he's - as he calls it - in field goal range on second down. If you don't get football, suffice it to say this, that's a hell of a turn-around, AND it's far from over. Sal talks to us about how he chooses to live now and what he does both physically and mentally to conquer the beast of cancer.

His name is Steve Sims and he's been called "The Real Life Wizard of Oz" and "The Guy Who Gets Shit Done."
There are several things I dig about this guy. First of all, he's just plain cool. He talks about "The Chug Test" with respect to only hanging with people you can see yourself chugging a beer with. He passes my Chug Test with flying colors.
Also, he thinks big. Weird big. Like, way weird big.
Third, he treats the fact that he makes miracles happen appear completely normal. In fact, at one point, he even busts out with, "And, by the way, none of this is complicated..."
For example, who else do you know that can get you to sing on stage with your favorite rock star, be serenaded by Andrea Bocelli over dinner at the foot of Michaelangelo's Statue of David in Florence, walk the red carpet at Sir Elton John’s Oscar party, get married in the Vatican, or Dive to the wreck of the Titanic - to name a few?

WOW! What a special treat! We get the complete insider's perspective on what it's like to prepare for, execute and learn from a 100 mile Ultramarathon from the RaveRunner, Ultramarathoner, Ryan Lange!
Ryan is back for a sequel on Tough Talks but this time we don't just talk ABOUT his experience with these absurdly long runs - we join him IN it!
We break it up into two segments. First we discuss he preparation routines and his pre-race mentality. Then he color commentates 6 video clips that were filmed of him DURING the race at his rests (Aid Stations). And walks us through, in detail, the elements of his physical, mental and tactical preparation, how he dealt with the demons, the lessons he learned from it, how he will apply those moving forward (next race is 200 miles around Lake Tahoe - one that defeated him last time!) and how all of this applies to the rest of us mortals. This is gold, Folks!

We got him back! Live and in-person this time! The infamous, internationally acclaimed coach, author, and speaker Devon Bandison.
This time we are discussing a topic that Devon has really been diving very deeply into recently – Normalizing the Miraculous. Here’s what that means…
You could argue that pressing a button on a remote control and having the result be that a channel changes on the TV across the room is miraculous. But we are so used to it that we don’t really think of it as very miraculous. It really is quite amazing – the technology – when you slow down enough to think about it. Which we don’t do. Ever.
Now, what if we were able to view life in such a way that the things that matter FAR more to us than being able to effectively change a channel on the TV could become equally “normal?” Like, the creation of our biggest visions and dreams for ourselves just became pretty normal. That’s just what we do. We have huge desires, and then we simply go create them into reality.
Then what would the new “miraculous” be?

When Helen Appleby was a kid her dad told her, "girls can do anything boys can do." But what he didn't tell her about (because he didn't know - because he was a man) were all the unwritten rules about being a woman in leadership. She's here to educate us upon those rules and what women in leadership roles, or who are aspiring to be, need to know in order to navigate their own leadership journeys.
And, by the way, this ain't just for women. Us men have plenty to learn here as well!

HEADS UP!!!: In keeping with my perpetual commitment to offer you opportunities to apply the Mental Toughness Tools and Techniques that we cover in these badass Tough Talks episodes, I encourage you to head into this episode with a couple of my favorite mantras in mind: “Ain’t bad; Just is.” And, “The Problem is The Gift.” Why am I saying this? Well, as fate would have it, I had some microphone issues. So there’s some serious screeching going on when I get loud – and I do that a lot. So, treat this as an opportunity to multitask. You get to BOTH learn from the immense wisdom of our first ever three-peater guest, David Wood, AND you also get to practice replacing your cringing when my audio pops with the above-suggested mantras. How’s THAT for service, huh?!
Props to my tech team of Micah Guller and Marlot Pels (who, by the way, are fully responsible for almost EVERYTHING that goes on here, and everywhere else in my life, production-wise) for fixing up the scratchiness a great deal so it’s even listenable.
When we initially discovered the “problem” (gift), my immediate response was, “F*#K!” Which I then replaced out loud with, Ain’t Bad; Just Is. And The Problem is The Gift. And that’s the work right there. Catching ourselves with low-grade interpretations of reality, and upgrading them as fast as possible. So have some fun learning and training. This episode was just WAY too good to toss because of a little (lot of) audio challenge!
If making way more money by doing LESS sounds appealing, then tune in.
This is David's THIRD appearance as a guest on Tough Talks. He's just that good. He teaches us how to decline the "monkey treats" that steer us off track (that'll make sense in a minute).
And if you're a business owner and/or entrepreneur, then today's episode is particularly relevant to you.

Dr. Daniel Harner is a former traditional Psychotherapist who has shifted to what he refers to as Psycho-Spiritual Mentoring.
A couple of the things I love about Daniel is his genius and his ability to dumb it down for us. He even acknowledges that a huge part of his work is to make conversations about "Spiritual Nourishment" accessible and understandable for 5 years olds.
Daniel is that refreshing combination of deep as hell and cool as hell. He's dropping wisdom bombs left and right over here on the function of suffering and he even teaches us that "the Devil is walking with us at all times" and how that's a great thing!

While on Holiday in Iceland in 2016, a blood vessel in Jason's brain erupted and almost killed him. It did partially paralyze him, but it sure as hell didn't stop him from creating a life of service as a result of it.
He shares details of his story with us today that he doesn't always disclose. And he reminds us that every set of circumstances - no matter how difficult - can be leveraged to "bounce forward."

This guy has been training his mind since 2003 when he was a competitive golfer.
He has never had a job (unless you count the half of a shift he worked at a soft-serve yogurt joint) and instead has always followed his bliss. From pro-golfer to surf instructor to 8-year stint in the Coast Guard and now to professional Conscious Musician – he trusts the organizing intelligence inherent within his passions.
Meet Ryan Perez. (He even does a little improv for us on his ukelele at the end!)

She enlightens us to three myths about Resilience and clarifies the truth for us.
She also describes for us the 5 Practices of Particularly Resilient People (based on her research).
And a quick heads up, if you use the phrase, “Everything happens for a reason,” do some deep breathing before watching because she’s gonna rip on you for that.

Want to learn how to do “Psychic Downloads” and access “Divine Intelligence”? I recommend you do, because by the sounds of it, skill sets like these can make life a helluva lot easier and simpler.
She was diagnosed with cancer at age 14 and refers to it as a blessing. And it sure didn’t happen “to her.” It didn’t even happen “for her.” It happened “AS her.” She’ll explain.
Her definition of Mental Toughness is one of the best I have ever heard.

I don’t always make fun of traditional psychotherapy, but when I do, it’s usually because it takes too long.
Now I don’t know if she’s “traditional” or not, but our guest today is definitely a psychotherapist. And she gets results FAST. Which is what really caught my attention.
We also have a special co-host for this interview, a former patient of hers who is now her current life coach! How wild is that? And he is also a former Tough Talks guest, Gary Mahler, who is going to talk story with her to get us started.

This week I have decided to switch it up a bit by flying solo. In other words, our Tough Talks guest today is me. I felt particularly compelled to share with my Tough Talks Tribe some thoughts I've been having recently on the relationship between Mental Toughness Training (aka, Emotional Mastery Training) and racism.
My content is my legacy in this life. It will live on long after I have returned to the non-local realm. And it is my sincere wish that this particular episode of Tough Talks becomes obsolete (at least the parts of it that are specific to learned racism) because racism has been completely eradicated from the planet.
I hope you find value in these thoughts and I would love to hear from you if you have any contribution, reaction, ideas, insights, opinions, rebuttals, questions, or thoughts of any nature on this.

So we turn the mics around today and have former TT guest, Jason Goldberg, do the interviewing. So CD is the guest today as Jason grills him on all things Mental Toughness. As expected, JG delivers with depth and humor.
We cover some territory here today: the nature of anxiety, coaching being faster than counseling, and remembering actors names on the spot in a sloppy, but entertaining, Rapid Fire session.

Garrett Richards is one the Major League Baseball’s best starting pitchers. He plays for the San Diego Padres and, at the time of this recording, is recovering from Tommy John surgery and will hopefully return to action this post-season. And if not, for sure at the beginning of the 2020 season.
Garrett is one of the more humble professional athletes you can meet and he is also one of the most resilient. He has had several reasons to cave, but instead, he decides to take the “roadblocks” and use them as fuel from which to grow.
Our interview was recorded live at our favorite Craft Beer House/Sports Bar, The Hungry Monk in Chandler, AZ where he and I actually first met about 9 years ago. Enjoy.

I met Sumukh a year ago when he was 19 at an international event that is for global thinkers committed to making a difference on the planet.
He immediately astonished me because of his willingness to so confidently occupy a level of leadership and contribution at such a young age. I knew immediately that I wanted him on the show.
It took us a year to coordinate it, and it's here now. You're going to love his vibe, his intellect, his humility, his heart, his leadership and his passion/mission.

This is someone's recent reaction to witnessing today's Tough Talks guest for the very first time: “WHO is this raw mass of unbridled brown energy, seething with sweat and love, this oozing cloud of kinetic inspiration dripping with openness and laughter?
It’s ASHOK!"
Have you ever been around someone who simply radiates high vibes all the time? Have you ever met someone who truly believes that NOTHING bad ever happens to them? Have you been in the presence of a person whose energy is so rich that you simply want to know them and be around them more? Ask this guy what he's on. He's got a great answer. Well, I asked him for you, and you'll love his response. Feel this dude's vibe. Really pay attention to that. That's his gift to us today.

Carolyn Freyer Jones, or CFJ, is a powerhouse coach who has been referred to as a "straight-talking New Yorker mixed with pure compassion." You can tell she's done her work on herself. She has a serenity and a clarity and a confidence about her that is palpable and can only make the experience of working with her so much more profound.
In our conversation today, CFJ drops a handful of wisdom bombs that will definitely serve you in your professional and personal lives. For example: "Courage isn't the absence of fear. It's moving forward with it."
She has her own Coaching School now, the CFJ Coaching Success School and you can learn more about that on her website. carolynfreyerjones@gmail.com

How many people do you know that have spent 3 months in a Nepalese Monastery, then followed that up with another month in a Thai one, 3 weeks in The Amazon in Peru and another 2 weeks in silence at a California retreat to process it all? Oh, and who trains the brains of Olympic medalists and NCAA Champion gymnasts?
I know one!
And we have her as our guest today. She's my former business partner and one of my greatest mentors in life, Dr. Alison Arnold.
Doc Ali, as we more casually know here, is a true Master Mental Coach and I'm proud to say has taught me a lot of what I know and use in my work. Our conversations are always full of depth and practical ideas of how to strengthen the mind.
You're gonna love her.

Today's guest is Fred Blum and he's back for Episode 2. We had a scintillating discussion a few months back and decided to do a round 2.
In today's dialogue, we take a deep dive into what it means to be "Energy Rich" or "Energy Poor", why so many of us unconsciously choose energy POOR living, and what we can do when we are energy impoverished in order to enrich ourselves.
Fred has generously offered The Tough Talks community a complimentary coaching session with him. (That’s amazing.) If you’re interested you can contact him at:

We got him back for round 2! And, Man, does he deliver. Again. David Wood is a master of many things. Among them is pausing before he responds. He's pretty damn mindful, and we learn from witnessing that alone. He's also a master of taking MASSIVE ACTION.
We discuss the 4 reasons why most of us DO NOT live our best lives. He calls them the 4 Villians. And, naturally, we finish with the antidote - the 4 Heroes.
He discussed how to work with the fact that our minds are like monkeys on crack! He also teaches us about The Law of Large Numbers and how "yes" lives in the land of "no."
He also has a remarkably generous offer for certain folks which he articulates at the very end.

This week we have our first ever repeat appearance by a guest. We have the amazing Stephen McGhee back for Episode 2. Our first conversation focused entirely upon his remarkable experience and subsequent documentary about climbing Aconcagua with 6 other men 7 or 8 years ago, and more importantly, the profound lessons that they each learned about themselves, their relationships and the ways that they are/were using their lives. If you haven’t seen that episode, please do watch/listen.
And, I wanted to bring this guy back because he’s just so powerful and I wanted to have another conversation with him, but this time about the magic that he’s creating currently as a Leadership Guide, International Speaker and Author.
Stephen has a graduate degree in Spiritual Psychology and backgrounds in both investment banking and as an ecumenical minister. He’s just a fascinating dude.
He’s the author of three books on leadership and has worked with a ton of huge companies like Microsoft, Merck and Firestone.
On his website he says that in working with him, “You will be pushed. You will be uncomfortable. You will be revealed. And your world will open."
Wow. That actually kind of frightened me!
Here are some of the highlights from this most spectacular dialog:
Why, if you’re serious about being a badass, you never want to be without a guide.
His unusual definition of leadership.
That it is possible to go into any conversation with anyone, anytime, without ANY assumptions about them. Why you’d want to. And HOW to do that. - What he does in his Pre-Game before meetings, sessions and talks that he refers to as, “Calling In the Light.”
How most of us have been conditioned to be really stingy with our high vibes. And the importance of understanding how we “vibe” and how that
either serves or disserves us.
Cultivating an “Intrinsic Environment” in order to successfully create greatness in the Extrinsic world.
What the hell is Spiritual Psychology?!
What he means by “You’ll be revealed” and why it IS, in fact, scary, but also essential in order to become your most powerful self.

We’re going for a deep dive here today, folks, into the core of the human experience with a New York-style Monk who has studied around the planet with great minds and mentors. He has degrees in Psychology and Chiropractic and his main focus now is coaching folks on living what he calls an Energy Rich Life. That is, living a life of productivity, vitality peace, connection, and happiness.
His name is Dr. Fred Blum and he will simultaneously mesmerize you, soothe you, confuse the fuck out of you and entertain you. This is why I love him!
We’ve already decided that we need to do at least a two part series in order to do justice to some of the topics that can really affect the way folks experience peace, or not, and success, or not.
Here are some of the highlights from our conversation:
The nature of the human ego is that it’s always dissatisfied, but contrary to many ancient philosophies, we do NOT want to kill the ego, we want to utilize it. (Yeah, we’re not easing into this dialog!)
Our True nature is Oneness, not separateness.
We are IN the world but not OF it.
His unique definition of a “game” and how we’d all do well to live life as such.
Planking (the exercise), suffering and surrender.
How absurdly incorrect you are when you think something “shouldn’t be happening.”
The highly advanced ability to permit yourself to fully experience an unpleasant emotion without getting involved with the story (thoughts) you have about it.
You’re not who you think you are.
The distinction between True Self and Ego/Identity/Separate Self.
Running from pain is precisely what has it endure.
Fred has generously offered The Tough Talks community a complimentary coaching session with him. (That’s amazing.) If you’re interested you can contact him at:

You ready to PLAY today?! Because that’s exactly what you’re about to do, and exactly what you’re about to watch me and today’s Tough Talks guest, David Wood, do.
David is actually a former Actuary for Fortune 100 companies like Exxon and Sony Music and Proctor & Gamble. He bounced from his cushy Manhattan gig to go off and explore the worlds. That is, the actual world, but also his inner world.
Now he’s an International Coach and Speaker who has coached thousands of hours over 20 years and in 12 countries!
His tag line, as well as his world view and website name is, “Play For Real.” He points out that 90% of people die with regret and he thinks that’s pretty damn unnecessary. And we’re gonna ask him all about that and how to NOT be one of that 90%!
This cat is both brilliant AND fun as hell. You’re gonna learn and laugh from this wizard today!
Here are some highlights:
The real key to success both personally and professionally.
The three keys to make that one key happen (you’re gonna need a keyring for this situation!).
To be your most powerful self, you must not only demonstrate the courage to express your real truth, you need to know what the hell it is! (And two ways to do that.)
Why it’s kind of stupid to be consumed with the whole “right or wrong” debate.
Why it’s incredibly powerful to not care about getting what you want.
The power of being DARING and the power of not being DARING! - What it’s like to step off a mountain and go UP!
The worst thing that can happen to you is a thought. Huh?
And a very generous offer he has for some of you. But you have to qualify.

How many people do you know that have not only starred on a major reality TV show, but have also been spoofed on South Park?!?! Well, I know one and you’re about to meet her. Her name is Stella Reid, aka, “Nanny Stella” of Nanny 911.
Nanny Stella moved to the USA 29 years ago from Northern England, became a celebrity and is now coaching parents, matching nannies and families, and offers online training courses for parents and nannies.
Here are some of the highlights from this most entertaining dialog:
What the hell is Momnesia?
How she’s relied upon “Military Precision” to whip these parents’ asses into shape!
Her own personal transformation from a “Rottweiler with a bee in its mouth” into a….well, she’ll tell you.
The 6 C’s of Mental Toughness!
How a working class girl from the North of England becomes a US celebrity
The Nanny 9-1-1 story.
And, of course, the South Park spoof: how it initially demoralized her and how she’s converted it into fuel!

Who gathers a group of six NON-mountaineers, trains them mentally and physically for a year and then climbs the tallest mountain in the Western Hemisphere with them? For personal and professional growth reasons. Who DOES that?! Leadership Guide, Speaker and Author Stephen McGhee does.
And he’s my guest in this episode of Tough Talks. And what a treat he is! Stephen and I have spent exactly zero hours of time together in the same physical space but I have studied him and followed his work for years in such a way that I feel like he’s a brother. We have also shared the same amazing coaches so we really are kindred spirits. And that made for a really “spirited” dialog on purpose, passion, commitment, mental toughness, success, meditation and jumping into freezing cold water.
Here are some of the highlights:
Mastery doesn’t mean perfection, it means progression.
Urgency doesn’t mean being in a hurry, it means that since life is so precious, let’s create NOW with what we have.
Getting “soft” as a Man. - The WHY of the Aconcagua Men’s Project.
Climbing as the metaphor for intrinsic freedom.
The necessity of doing something completely “unreasonable.”
“Suffering is underrated!”
Who soaks in a goddamn ice bath for 4 minutes every morning?!
His approach to integrating “bad news”
The discipline of doing the thing you just don’t feel like doing.
The Sanskrit origin of the word, “hu-man.”
His gift to you for listening.

One of the most important reasons to strengthen the mind is because of its instantaneous, inextricable, and profound relationship with the body. In fact, with the quantity and quality of emerging scientific research these days on the mind-body relationship, I predict there’ll be a new, condensed word soon for “mind-body relationship” and it’ll simply be mind-body.
Last year a documentary came out on the subject entitled, HEAL. I went to see it in the theaters and was blown away at how many brilliant experts were included and how densely packed the film is with hugely important information and practices for us to understand and integrate so that we can enjoy life with optimal health.
I am over the moon pumped about the fact that our guest today is the Writer, Director, Producer of the fabulous and fabulously important documentary, Heal, Kelly Noonan Gores.
There a million highlights from this conversation. In fact, the conversation ITSELF is one big highlight. But here are a few of the moments that moved me to make a note:
-5:38 - When asked WHY she created this film, Kelly references the impact that Epigeneticist and Stem Cell Researcher, Dr. Bruce Lipton had upon her.
-10:22 - The Universe is a Conspiracist!
-18:14 - Yep. We’re still a little “Cavemanny.” How our brains are still hardwired for surviving versus thriving.
-19:04 - The old school Newtonian Physics vs. modern day Quantum Physics and how we Cause Effects with our minds and our hearts.
-26:40 - Why mediation is so practical and important for us right now. “Decluttering.”
-29:56 - The amazing near death experience and spontaneous (or not so spontaneous but certainly radical) remission of best selling author of the book, Dying To Be Me, Anita Moorjani’s stage 4 lymphoma. Her transition from fear to love and how that cured her. In 5 weeks!
-37:08 - Channeling Pure Divine Love.
-40:30 - Gregg Barden and the mechanics of Heart Math - how the heart and brain collaborate.
-45:25 - Darren Weissman and his very unusual Lifeline Technique of healing, even severe diagnoses.
-58:19 - The power of gratitude and not only giving thanks for what you have but also giving thanks for the future that you’re creating!

WOW! What an impressive guy, this Mike Haynes. And that he’s an NFL Hall of Famer is NOT the top reason why. In fact, not even close. Rather, it’s his perpetual commitment to serve that makes him so powerful. You’ll notice him use the words “serve” and “service” throughout the entire discourse. ---
This dialog rocked me a few times, and those times will be obvious to you.
Here are a few of the highlights:
8:25: Mike’s experience defeating prostate cancer and how it led to him becoming a national spokesperson for it.
10:15: The importance of being proactive (at this point with respect to getting checked for prostate cancer or breast cancer, but more on being proactive later…)
13:10: What Mental Toughness means to Mike Haynes and why it must fundamentally involve service.
17:25: The difference between talking Mental Toughness and WALKING it.
19:30: You’ll be surprised by his response to the question, “When did you first think about playing professional football?”
22:25: The BIG ASK that opened up his career (THIS is where this interview starts getting real deep!)
27:55: The imperative nature of the courage to ask and the courage to move in the direction of your dreams.
29:25: Or maybe it isn’t even courage - maybe it’s DESIRE.
31:40: What this NFL Hall of Famer is most proud of. Which is why I love this guy so much!

Our guest today is a man who definitely walks his talk when it comes to fortifying his mind and living powerfully. You hear it clearly in his language. His name is John Toomey and he is an enormously successful sales leader (SVP North America Sales at NICE Systems), an Ironman and a dedicated husband and father. And he has some true golden nuggets - practical insights and advice - for us in each of those categories that will help us be far more powerful in each of those specific areas of life.
In our conversation today we touch upon:
· The mega-importance of always having a clear “WHY?!”
· How “no” in sales doesn’t actually mean no, but rather it’s simply an indicator of a lack of information.
· Why Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss is the best sales book EVER!
· 2 ways for athletes (and anyone) to tap into extra reservoirs of strength and stamina.
· The 3 F’s that are his 3 pillars of life: Faith, Family and Fundamentals.
This talk is choc-full of laughs and valuable takeaways. You’re gonna love John!

Holistic Nutritionist, Life Coach and former NFL Cheerleader, Taylor Stone is our guest for today’s episode of Tough Talks.
Taylor’s work far transcends (but most definitely includes) nutritional coaching in her work with women. She refers to herself as a healer (rightfully so) and integrates emotional detoxing and instilling massive self-love and confidence and exercise coaching in her efforts to help women get out of the victim mindset so they can own and create a life they love.
Taylor is a true student of longevity and health and she walks her talk. She can be unapologetically polarizing when it comes to subjects like the overmedication of the populous and the ignorance we have as a society to our bodies desire to heal itself. Here are some of the highlights from our conversation:
4:15: Taylor’s own history with health challenges
11:30: What if most people on antidepressants don’t need them?!
18:25: and….what if depression in general is “not necessary”?
22:05: “Unconscious Absorption” and “Bi-Neural Beats” (NOT by Dre)
26:42: The importance of taking a “Life Audit” -28:25: Eliminating the negative peeps from your tribe
34:25: Liver Detox!
38:10: Jim Carrey’s bold take on depression

It isn’t every day that I get to interview a famous Hollywood Stuntwoman! But I did today. Angela Meryl is our badass guest for this episode and we discuss the unlikely journey she’s had as a model/actress/stuntwoman.
Angela had a very modest upbringing in Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey and decided at an early age that she wanted to go to Hollywood and crush it there (“Decided” is the operative word in that sentence). She has won numerous awards for her work and has appeared in a LONG list of TV shows and blockbuster movies including Kill Bill, Skysong, The Obsessed, Westworld, Pirates of the Caribbean, and has been a guest on shows such as Queen Latifah and this other small one called Oprah!
A few hit points from our dialog:
-9:25 - Getting “Paid to Play” - following your bliss
-12:45 - The Psychology of jumping out of a 33rd story window - backwards.
-20:45 - Angela’s ONE golden nugget of advice to an 11 year old (she has an 11-year-old daughter)
-29:00 - “Watch me!” - The Determination Decision
-31:25 - Oprah want you to jump off her building!
Angela is such a unique guest and such a powerful and surprisingly gentle (for a Super Badass Stunt Woman) presence, and I’m certain you’ll enjoy her stories and insights.

Here are a few of the hot spots: * 5:00: The Information vs. Transformation distinction * 9:00: “Sautéing in your shit” (emotionally every bit as gross as it sounds) * 10:45: “Crazy 8” The Depression/Anger endless loop * 25:20: Pain vs. Suffering and how pain IS imperative to growth * 27:00: Cold Showers as a morning WIN * 28:20: Are you a Pain or Pleasure responder? * 30:00: THE BURPEES!!! (He drops and gives us 10!) * 39:00: The value of Metrics in getting started and staying started * 45:00: His incredible morning routine
Mike is not typical. His lifestyle is not normal. And that’s precisely why we have so much to learn from him. He’s such a fun, brilliant, love filled, passionate guy who just can’t stop feeding his soul. And that’s precisely why you’re gonna enjoy him so much.

The Gallup organization has been doing research on job satisfaction among Americans for decades. The results have been remarkably consistent. And remarkably disturbing. The vast majority of people polled report being dissatisfied with their jobs. Far from in love with them. And “job” is the place where most of us spend most of our lives.
Our guest today is Chief Strategic Career Advisor at The Bauke Group, Julie Bauke.
Julie is a no nonsense, self-proclaimed “Fierce Advocate” for not settling but rather for proactively co-creating your ideal vocation.
Here are some of the highlights from our conversation:
Join us for our aggressive challenge of how how we have historically permitted ourselves to “settle” into less than ideal careers.

In today’s episode of Tough Talks, we are fortunate to have as our guest the former NFL superstar and current NFL Broadcaster, Adam Archuleta. Adam knew from early youth that he wanted to be a professional American Football player. That’s true for a lot of kids. But one of the distinguishing factors about Adam is that he skipped over hoping and wishing and got straight into deciding.
Not only did Adam simply decide that he would be playing in the NFL, he became a voracious student and devotee to learning and doing whatever it would take to make that his reality.
Adam treats everything that way. He isn’t interested in being good at things. He’s interested only in being the best. Which is why he overcame his self-reported “extreme introversion” and “near social phobia” in order to be able to manifest one of 16 positions in the world sitting in the booth calling NFL games on live internationally broadcast TV.
A few of the hit points we cover in our fascinating dialog:
Adam IS a very typical person. He just chooses to live very atypically. And there’s a lot for us to learn from that.

These are the questions that today’s Tough Talks guest, Dr. J’Lein Liese, has committed her life to challenging people across the globe to answer. Dr. Liese is an international expert in leadership, strategy execution, communication, change management, and conflict resolution. She works extensively in acute-conflict areas. Most recently, in the Middle East and previously throughout Africa.
The bottom line, really, is that J’Lein is a global servant and her mission is to have us live together peacefully and productively.
J’Lein is about as interesting a person as you can ever meet. She’s a master of distinctions. And that all comes through abundantly clearly, as usual, in this fascinating dialog during which we touch upon:
J’Lein is a true genius and a gift to the world in which we live. I know you’ll love her and enjoy this poignant discussion.

That means he does things like runs 240 miles in 86 hours and change. He runs 50 miles without ever stopping! And he only started running three years ago. Because he was fat. And got tired of it. And he’s 20. Years. Old.
Ryan Lange is the name of our Tough Talks guest today and he drops Mental Toughness Tips in our dialog like they’re going out of style.
Here’s a few nuggets:

I like to think of Devon as the Queens, NY version of a hybrid of Yoda and Mark Twain. He is a lifelong student of the mind and a masterful storyteller. In our conversation today, he shares with us several powerful and accessible disciplines and practices that we can use day to day to strengthen the way we use our minds, create more joy and be more successful.
In our discussion we hit on:
Devon’s electric personality and acerbic wit combined with his casual, homeboy wisdom will have you both entertained and enriched.

Jeff has always used the game of golf as a vehicle through which to teach people of all ages how to LIVE more powerfully. He’s a successful international corporate speaker, TV personality, master story teller, and author of the book, Your Kid Ate a Divot: 18 Life Lessons From The Links. He’s hysterical and insightful. And you don’t need to be a golfer to get a ton of value out of this dialog where we cover: * How to become an observer of the content of your mind * The meaning and power of his mantra: “Just cause I thought it, doesn’t mean I bought it.” * A unique trick using paper clips, of all things, to strengthen your ability to catch yourself thinking crappy.
So listen in for a laugh and a lesson or two.

Vince loves discipline, not necessarily in the militaristic sense, but certainly in the “Let’s just go ahead and crush it at life” sense. Vince is so fun to listen to because he never lost his childlike enthusiasm and he brings that into everything he experiences in life. Here are a few of the things we cover:
So settle in and have a listen.

Earth Day, April 22nd, 2040 will mark the End of All Human Suffering caused by our current way of life. I have literally been looking forward to this interview for months! I am absolutely fascinated by this man, Bill Giruzzi, who has produced a document – a small book called “Solving the Unsolvable” that I consider to be one of the boldest declarations and brilliantly expansive intellectual gestures I’ve ever come across. I’m sure you will all dig it too.
Every day there are seeds being planted. Right now as you read these words someone is having an idea that has the potential to alter the course of humanity. Some might call what I’ve written one of those seeds. I more like to think of it as the soil. For me, the words in this document are designed to create fertile ground; they create a space for the seeds to grow. You may never create a seed but you, like me, can tend to the soil. And so, never forget, we all have a part to play in the transformation of our planet. We all have something to say about what happens next. What do you say?
