In this candid and important episode, we delve into the often sensitive and overlooked topic of intimacy and sexuality during and after cancer. We're excited to be joined by Dr. Samantha Siegel, an inspiring internist from Kaiser Permanente, who brings both her professional expertise and her personal triumph over relapsed/refractory Hodgkin’s Lymphoma into this conversation.
Before we dive in, we want to provide a forewarning that this episode will address explicit sexual topics. We believe it's essential to engage openly and honestly with these matters, as they play a significant role in the lives of those facing cancer. Dr. Siegel's insights will provide valuable guidance, but we understand that this content might not be suitable for all listeners. For further insights into the intersection of cancer and sexuality, don't miss our previous episode featuring Dr. Anne Katz, a certified sexuality counselor and Clinical Nurse Specialist. You can listen to that episode HERE, where Dr. Katz expertly discusses breaking the silence on sexuality in oncology, navigating vulnerable conversations for survivors and their partners, and finding body acceptance after cancer-related physical changes.
This episode is a reminder that thriving beyond cancer involves addressing all dimensions of life, including intimacy. Join us for this essential conversation with Dr. Samantha Siegel, as we navigate the complexities of intimacy and cancer, offer insights for survivors, care partners, and healthcare professionals alike.

After Pam was diagnosed and treated for uterine cancer in 2000, she experienced first-hand a lack of guidance for addressing how cancer and its treatments can devastate your body. She recognized the gap in medical treatments in treating the whole person. This is why she has dedicated 17 years of her life to making Triumph Cancer Foundation a part of our community, with the mission of empowering cancer survivors to recapture their lives after cancer treatment through physical fitness. In this episode Pam acknowledges how cancer survivors can begin to set some amazing goals for themselves when allowing room for grace in their recovery process and take the needed time to build up your strength from experts who understand how issues like lymphedema, neuropathy, balance and range of motion can impede progress.
Pam continues to thrive as a cancer survivor and advocate. She is grateful to have the steadfast support of her husband Paul Almond and her family, and the guiding hands of many advisors over the years to help her steer the ship. As an architect, she strives to design homes that inspire her clients and is sensitive to the environment. As a cancer survivor, her goal is, and will always be, to inspire other survivors and to make the cancer journey a bit easier through the work of the Triumph Cancer Foundation.

While recognizing everyone's journey is different, they draw on their own experiences as cancer survivors to discuss what happens during the transition from in-treatment to post-treatment. The holidays can be a time of great joy and celebration, but for some, it can also be a time of grief. Wellness Within Founder Patti Brown, MS LMFT discusses giving ourselves the permission to grieve honestly. She debunks the concept that grief should be contained within a certain period of time, and discusses how navigating grief is deeper than trying to contain it to a prescriptive model. She offers insights including the significance of ceremonies and rituals, as well as thoughtful questions to ask a loved one who may be grieving during the holidays. With this being a short episode, not all important aspects of grief were able to be discussed, including how the element of shock can affect us. Participants in our monthly Compose YOURSELF! Music Therapy classes are frequently invited to join in songwriting experiences with our music therapist, Celeste Keith MT-BC. No previous music experience is needed to participate in these classes. Celeste uses a variety of safe and collaborative approaches to lead group members in crafting songs that give voice to their collective concerns and celebrations. Celeste notes:
"When you listen to any piece of music or sing a song it no longer resides outside of your being. Rather you become the song itself... its story, its message...its truth. Actual songwriting amplifies this experience."
The group's most recent song is titled, "Attitude is Everything". Contributors to the song wrote the lyrics and built all other musical elements heard in this recording including the melody, chords, rhythms, riffs, instruments, backup vocals, and more.

Here is where we connect with that which is greater than ourselves, drawing it into our physical bodies through noticing the constant movement within. In this episode, Wellness Within's Patti Brown MS LMFT, Elizabeth Klein, and Stevie Hannickel have an open, honest, and encouraging discussion about the need for rest during difficult times. This episode speaks to the elephant in the room and addresses how productivity can be tied to identity, how to recognize when we are depressed or unmotivated, how to ask for help or make modifications to better serve ourselves, and much more. You will hear them share some of their personal experiences but most importantly they touch on how not to wait until your body, mind, or emotions scream at you before you give yourself permission to rest.

In this episode Wellness Within Founder Patti Brown, MS LMFT is joined by honored guest, Anne Katz, PhD, RN, FAAN to discuss Cancer and Sexuality. Dr. Katz addresses the need for oncologists to break the silence on the topic of sexuality with their patients, how survivors and their partners can navigate vulnerable conversations about sexuality, and also how to find body acceptance after physical changes from cancer and its treatments.
Dr. Anne Katz is a certified sexuality counselor and Clinical Nurse Specialist in Manitoba. She is the editor of the Oncology Nursing Forum, the premier research journal of the Oncology Nursing Society. She has educated thousands of cancer survivors and health care providers about cancer, sexuality, and survivorship. She is the author of going on 16 books for health care providers and readers on the topics of illness, sexuality and cancer survivorship.
"My professional life is focused on providing information, education and counseling to people with cancer and their partners about sexual changes that can occur during and after treatment.
But there is another important aspect to this work; I want every person with cancer to be able to have a discussion about sexuality with their health care providers. And so I travel around the world, teaching health care providers to ask their patients about this important part of quality of life."

In this meditation, we focus on light and how we can see the light in people and objects more clearly with our third eye, or Ajna. This light reflects the inner vibration of all beings and all things. This is our place of intuition and imagination. We will learn how to imagine others generating their own light for healing instead of sending light to them.

Karen Penfold welcomes you to join this somatic meditation to ease anxiety and cultivate stress resilience. This body-based meditation regulates and calms your nervous system. Think of this mediation as "calm body, calm mind". By bringing focused awareness to the body's felt sense, and cultivating ease and release in the muscles of the face, around the eyes, and into the jaw and neck, we can activate the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve functions like the body's natural reset button bringing about physiological calming responses to your system such as slowing your heart rate, slowing your breathing, aiding your digestion and lowering blood pressure. All of which creates relaxation responses to help you rest, reset, and recover from anxiety and traumatic stress.

My name is Janet Eatherton, or as I am known to my patients, Dr E. I have been a physician in the field of Internal medicine for the past 27 years and have been practicing meditation for the past 10 + years. The profound impact that mindfulness, meditation and living with intention has had on my life is something I am hoping to share with the Wellness Within community.
I have noticed that so many aspects of my life have also been bettered by my being more mindful – I am a more thoughtful physician, friend, parent and partner, a more intentional photographer and cook. Traveling when you actually, mindfully, feel the earth beneath your feet, taste the food and see the grand vistas and the small details of life are also gifts of mindfulness.

Theresa Ainsworth has been crocheting for 40 years and knitting for 15 years. She has been teaching both arts for 15 years at both a local yarn shop as well as a service-learning project while studying abroad at the University of Ghana to complete her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Women’s Studies with Sacramento State University. After being diagnosed with a life-altering disease in 2017, she shifted her teaching to focus from classes in yarn shops to more meaningful and impactful venues. She states, "I have long believed in the therapeutic power of knitting and crochet and have studied much of the research around this subject.

Progressive muscle relaxation is said to increase your awareness of the sensations associated with tension (and, in turn, help you identify and deal with the physical effects of everyday stress).
And a 2003 study from the journal Psychooncology found that progressive muscle relaxation helped relieve anxiety and improve quality of life among 29 colorectal cancer patients who had recently received surgery. A 2006 study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, meanwhile, showed that progressive muscle relaxation improved quality of life and reduced blood pressure among people with heart disease.

Wellness Within Founder Patti Brown leads a meditation on uncertainty: "Calming the Anxiety Accompanied by Uncertainty"
Wellness Within is the realization of a dream for Patti. After 20 years in private practice as a psychotherapist, she decided to honor the tugging at her heart and open a grass roots organization to serve a community dealing with cancer and its aftermath. It is her life’s work to teach, support, and mobilize the body and mind for healing.
Patti actively incorporates her training in mind-body medicine to support a community of people struggling with a cancer diagnosis. The Center’s belief is based on honoring the integration of medical treatments with mind body practices that enhance one’s quality of life with dignity and hope. As the founder of Wellness Within, she understands the profound impact a life threatening illness brings, and the significance of pulling together a caring, loving community to provide support, comfort and healing.
