We are rewinding it back to 2020 with this episode of the Resilient Training Lab podcast. THis was a 2 part episode but we put them together for this month's episode to make it easy to listen to it all at once. On this episode, physical therapist and RTL coach, Eric Lagoy joins Ryan and Paul to talk about about efficacy versus effectiveness. It is our responsibility as health professionals and coaches to ensure that we are doing our best to utilize practices that are efficacious and effective. Paul, Ryan, and Eric discuss that people come to fitness or health professionals for their knowledge and help; therefore, as professionals, we need to do our very best to actually be knowledgeable, look at the research, and learn the best ways to get the effects we are after. This is a really great episode from these 3 that has some very important takeaways.

Here is a solo episode with Paul and Ryan! They discuss what you need to know about modifying training. When do you know when it is time to change it up and why are some reasons that you might consider making some modifications. Some common reasons you might want to switch up your training include being unmotivated and dragging your feet to the gym, you have another interest/hobby/commitment that is requiring more of your time, and you're currently injured. Don't be afraid to talk to your coach about how you're feeling or about what other things you have going on in your life. They can help you to make changes so that you can still kill it in the gym when you aren't feeling the same drive and motivation that you used to or when you have another goal, skill, or activity that you want to focus on more.
0:14 - Paul intros the episode with the topic of this month’s episode and the events and monthly challenge going on at Resilient. This month we have an event on June 11th with Open Doors Outdoors. We will all be getting together to hike at Sleeping Giant at 12pm. June’s challenge is max watts on the bike. Give it everything you got to crank up the intensity and get those watts as high as possible. 1:50 - Ryan goes into more detail explanation of this month’s topic of modifying training when you’re struggling in the gym, have other interests/activities going on, or are dealing with an injury. He poses the question to Paul about how you know when it is time to make changes to your training. 10:14 - Paul talks about how training your training focus away from performance and strictly your 1RM can be very beneficial to your overall training and progress. It might mean shifting your goals for the moment or just focusing on other aspects of health that training can benefit. The overall goal is to meet the physical activity guidelines and to go from there. Focus on what you can do given your current schedule and/or how you want to split your time between the gym and other activities. 14:34 - Ryan shares one of the ways he approaches making changes to his client’s programs when they are struggling or feeling unmotivated. He tries to take out the “psychologically stressful” exercises. For example, he may have a client that struggles with squat variations and find them to be very mentally taxing. He will take your typical squat variations out for a block or two to help decrease the person’s overall stress and hopefully help them to get more motivated to get to the gym each week. 17:24 - Even high level competitors can feel burnt out and unmotivated. What it comes down to whether you are an elite competitor or someone whose focus is overall improvement in health is that you need to manage your emotions and expectations. Sometimes it is best to put into training exercises that you have less expectations around so that you don’t get so caught up in the numbers you are hitting in training. 29:41 - Ryan talks about how he has modified his own training since adding in golf into his regular activities. During golf season, he makes changes so that he can still progress in golf while also still meeting his physical activity guidelines. 36:15 - It is about setting up realistic training schedules that help you meet the physical activity guidelines and managing expectations. Set minimums for yourself. Create minimums that will help make you the most successful. Manage your expectations. You can’t expect to make giant strides in squat, bench, and deadlift when your greater focus is on another sport/skill/activity. 44:00 - When you find yourself injured, it can be easy to get caught up in what you can’t do. However, the best thing you can do for yourself is focus on what you CAN do. Training might look a lot or a little different, but be okay with it and focus on goals and wins that you can achieve while injured.

This week is all about the value of hiring a coach. This episode is a great listen for those who have been on the fence about hiring a coach for their training and want help to reach their goals. Having a coach is beneficial whether you are brand new to working out or are an elite lifter.. A coach can be useful no matter where you are in your fitness journey and regardless of what your goals are. Ryan and Paul begin the episode by discussing the value of having a coach when you are first getting started in the gym. A coach can help you when you are brand new to the gym by showing you what the equipment is, how to set it up, and how to use it. They are also learning and looking for advice on how to make lifting fit into their lives. The coach is there to support them as they start working out. As the client moves past their first few months of training and is getting more comfortable with working out and the gym, the coach can be valuable by continuing to keep them accountable and consistent and also adding more complexity into their training. As beginners nail down the basics, more complexity can be added into their program to help them work towards their goals and add in training that they most enjoy. The coach's job with a client within the first year is to help get them comfortable and confident in the gym so that they can workout whether or not a coach is present. They end their discussion discussing the job of a coach for clients in their first few years as a lifter and at an intermediate or advanced level. The coach is still important because they can help to modify your training as your life circumstances may change (i.e. buying a house, getting sick, working through an injury), fine tune technique modifications to help you be stronger and more efficient, and work through plateaus. The coach is also valuable in looking at your life as a whole and aid in making changes inside and outside of the gym in order to help you be the most successful at reaching your goals. The episode closes out with a discussion with a fan favorite guest, Carlos Reyes. Carlos comes on the podcast to discuss why he finds having a coach is valuable as an elite lifter. He talks about when he first started working with a coach and discusses all the way to present day working with Paul for the past 3 years. Give a listen to hear everything Carlos has to say about working with a coach. We would love to hear what you have to say about what you find valuable about having a coach. Happy New Year RTL Fam! We are back with a new and improved format!
This week’s episode covers everything to expect during your first day, week, and month of training & what coaches should be doing and looking for when a client first starts training at RTL. The episode begins with a discussion between Paul and Ryan about the first steps when a client comes to them interested in training. They break down the initial assessment process and cover what the client can expect as well as explain what a coach should be asking and looking for during the assessment process. Next, they delve into what the first day of training looks like as well as the first week and months of training. They stress that the most important factor when it comes to training and making progress is consistently showing up and putting in effort. They also discuss other factors that can help clients be successful in the gym for the long term.
For the second half of the episode, Clare joins Paul to talk about her first experience training with a coach and how she has progressed to where she is today. Clare opens up about her first couple years of training which included working with a trainer whose personality didn’t really match up well with hers, doing random workouts for the better part of a year, and working with another coach who helped her prep for her first powerlifting meet. She then goes into detail about how her training has evolved through working and learning from different coaches, making lifestyle and diet changes, and managing her training to help her to continuously make progress in the gym. Make sure to listen to hear some of the biggest lessons she has learned through training and how lifting has helped to increase her confidence in herself and her abilities.

Today's guest is Matt Domney from Compound Performance. Ryan, Paul, and Matt talk all things coaching in this episode & cover a ton of great information that all coaches should hear. They start off talking about training philosophies and how there are too many coaches that find themselves married to one type of training. While the majority of the time there isn't inherently wrong with any one training method, it becomes problematic when coaches become die hards for one specific method. Taking a bird's eye view of all the philosophies will make you a better, more versatile coach that can serve their clients the best. They talk about the common issues they see when coaching beginner and intermediate lifters, the importance of putting effort into your lifts, and simplifying your coaching. At the end of the day, getting your lifters to make progress and lift more weight is what matters. Worrying about what muscle is doing what and ensuring that you have enough internal or external rotation of this an that in order to do certain movements doesn't matter and is hindering progress at the end of the day. Their conversation is important for all coaches, beginner and experienced to listen to. Click to listen!

This is our 4th and final episode in the "Get to Know Your Coaches" series. This final episode is all about the owner of Resilient Training Lab, Paul Milano. He talks all about his life growing up as a hyperactive kid, playing lacrosse and wrestling in high school, and starting to lift weights in his basement. Paul then went on to attend and graduate from UCONN for Kinesiology. After coaching high school athletes and working as a physical therapy, he got a job working with gen pop clients. This is where he found his passion for working with people and helping them realize their strength and resilience not only in the gym but in their everyday lives as well. He worked in that gym for a few years before getting the opportunity to start his own business. This is when Resilient Training Lab came to be. We are coming up on one year of being open and this is just the beginning for Paul and RTL. Listen to this episode to hear all of the details about Paul, how the barbell helped to save his life and give him purpose, and why he started RTL.

Ryan tells us all about his life growing up, playing baseball, discovering strength training in high school, going to UCONN for kinesiology, his first few jobs as a coach, and finally how he joined forces with Paul at Resilient Training Lab. Ryan's training philosophies have evolved over the years and his beliefs and perceptions revolved around training have also changed since first setting foot in the gym as a high school. He was lucky to have some awesome mentors, such as Mike Mez and Dr. Kramer, from the start. Due to what he learned from those mentors and through his own experiences, he was able to recognize when his first jobs as a coach weren't allowing him to do what he believed in and felt passionate about. He wanted to help people, improve their health, make them stronger, and get more people training more often. This is when he decided to go on his own at Revolution Fitness Clubs which then led to meeting Paul and joining Resilient Training Labs. To hear all of the details, click to listen!

We are continuing our "Get to Know Your Coaches" series in episode 19. Ryan K talks to Ryan VanNieuwenhuyze about growing up with a personal trainer as a mom, staying active through combat sports and wrestling, and choosing physical therapy as his career path. Ryan Vann had a very early introduction to strength training by having his mom as a great role model and watching her train clients. He was introduced to the physical therapy world after getting injured wrestling and needing surgery and PT. He went on to shadow at physical therapy offices to see if it was something that he would want to do for a career. After 6 years of schooling at Quinnipiac, he started his physical therapy career. Ryan has had a variety of professional experience in different clinics and always knew that he wanted to eventually open his own clinic. He now owns Barbell Physical Therapy and Performance and works with Resilient Training Lab as a strength coach. We love his approach as a physical therapist, his use of the bio-psycho-social model, and how he communicates and educates his clients. This is the first episode in our new series, "Get to Know Your Coaches." Our newest coach, Claire Michalak, kicks this series off in episode 18. Clare is a very new coach in the industry and she takes us through her journey of how she got here. Growing up as an athlete made the transition to powerlifting very easy for her. Although she hasn't been in the sport for long, she can definitely hold her own and has hit some really awesome numbers. She is just getting started so we foresee her hitting some extremely impressive numbers in the future. But before all of that, Clare talks about playing sports as a kid and being a cardio bunny in college. She also has a really interesting past that includes attaining both an English degree and a Graphic Design degree, being a stage manager, and starting a career in marketing. Listen to hear all about how she got involved with lifting and why she decided to make the major career change to being a strength coach. Today we have Dustin Lebel joining Paul and Ryan on the Resilient Training Lab Podcast. Dustin talks about how he focuses on the big rocks of training for his clients. He helps set them up for success by creating programs that are realistic and achievable. Most people don't have time to spend 2+ hours in the gym 6 times per week so handing them a program that requires those things will end up setting them up for failure. Dustin focuses on having his clients adhere to 3 strength training days, keeping their NEAT up, and focusing on lifestyle factors such as sleep, stress management, and nutrition. And these are all things that he has them work on over a long period of time. To make the most progress for the long term, it is important to start small and slow and build up from there. He explains that having people start with the basics and keeping them on 3 days of strength training per week leads to the most successes. With time, most people end up realizing on their own that they want to do more or that they want to start to build better habits surrounding exercise, sleep, and nutrition. Paul and Ryan also ask Dustin to talk about how things have changed since becoming a father 8 months ago. We think this is an important topic to discuss because it is a big life change; however, it shouldn't be one that derails ones exercise and healthy lifestyle habits. Staying the course and focusing on sticking to the program is important during the journey of new parenthood. This is a great episode for everyone to listen to, but I highly encourage any parents, new parents or parents-to-be to listen to this one.

Are you frustrated that you aren’t making progress in the gym? Make sure you listen to episode 16 of The Resilient Training Lab Podcast to hear Coach Paul and Coach Ryan talk about some of the reasons that you aren’t seeing progress in the gym. They talk about the pyramid of factors that are key to making progress which goes from consistency at the bottom, next is effort, and at the top is recovery. Without consistency, effort isn't important and recovery isn't needed. Focus on working from the bottom of the pyramid and work your way up. You will most likely find that when you focus on these big 3 factors, you will end up seeing progress in the gym. They also discuss the importance of following a program rather than just making things up as you go. Too many people workout haphazardly and never see progress. Find yourself a coach that is going to help you train in a way you enjoy as well as create a program that will allow you to progress over time and help you to reach your goals. If you find yourself feeling frustrated over lack of progress, make sure to listen to this episode. You may be able to find where you are falling short and where you can improve in order to progress and reach your goals.

Paul, Ryan, and Eric are back with part 2 of the Efficiency vs Effectiveness episode. In episode 15, they continue their discussion on why it is important to always be learning, challenge your own beliefs, and try to be less wrong every day. It is easy to confirm your own beliefs and biases, but it is our epistemological responsibility to actively seek resources that disprove or update our beliefs. They also talk about being a strength coach or health profession for the right reasons versus just being in it for the money. You need to be invested in the well-being of your clients and not just focus on the paycheck that you get at the end of the week. In order to be the best coach and health professional and to serve your clients in the best way possible, you need to keep learning and updating your beliefs and practices. Getting stuck with one method or way of doing things is doing a disservice to your clients. Maybe it works for a short period of time but in the long run, your client is going to stop progressing and won't reach their goals. They are paying you to help them so you must do your duty in order to best serve them. This was another great episode from these 3 that has some really important takeaways.

We have physical therapist and fellow RTL coach, Eric Lagoy, back on the podcast for episode 14. This is part one of a two part episode about efficacy versus effectiveness. It is very easy to find things that confirm our own biases and to make money off of gimmicky methods, but it is our duty as fitness professions to avoid those things and to give our clients the most efficacious and effective methods. We need to actively look for information and research that challenges our own biases. It comes back to it being our own responsibility to do this work so that our clients are being served in the best possible way. This episode is filled with great information and is only half of the conversation. Paul, Ryan, and Eric got so carried away with the conversation that we had to make it a two part episode. Come back next week to hear everything else they have to say about this topic!

Dr. Mike Velasquez is our guest on Episode 11 of The Resilient Training Lab Podcast. Mike received his Doctorate of Physical Therapy at the University of Connecticut and is a physical therapist at Gaylord Hospital. This episode covers his education in physical therapy school as well as the ways he continues to focus on continuing his education by staying up-to-date on research, shadowing other clinicians, and taking online courses. Mike goes into how he decided to go to school for physical therapy and his experience in the program at UCONN. The biggest thing that he goes into detail about is the importance of continuing his education after school and during his career in order to become a more educated and skilled clinician. School is great for helping you to pass the tests and boards, but when it comes to real life and dealing with real people, there is more that needs to be delved into and more to learn. Tony Montgomery of Team Phoenix Performance joins Coach Paul and Coach Ryan for a conversation about all things nutrition. Tony is a strength and nutrition coach out of Portland, Oregon. He has an Exercise Science degree from Florida Atlantic University and is a Marina Corps Vet, Elite FTS sponsored athlete, and owner of the gym, Strength Union, Team Phoenix Performance, and Subject Zero Supplements.
In this episode, Tony talks about creating a sustainable diet and lifestyle in order to see the best long-term results, making small changes at a time, and individualizing people's diets since everyone has different lifestyles, genetics, value different things, and have different goals. The biggest thing that Tony stressed was forming habits that are going to help you to build a sustainable lifestyle in regards to nutrition. Making one change at a time that can fit into your current lifestyle is the perfect way to get started and you can build from there. And just as with programming, you want your diet to be something you can adhere to and be successful and consistent with in the long term. Episode 6 is all about...you guessed it...the coronavirus! Paul and Ryan talk about your mindset during this time and how we should focus on doing what is practical versus optimal, minimize catastrophizing, and celebrate small wins. They also discuss the importance of maintaining a schedule during this chaotic time and aiming to keep our NEAT up. They also go into how although most of us are left with minimal or no equipment right now, we can still make progress and minimize losses in strength. If we focus on increasing hypertrophy, aerobic capacity, and working close to failure, then we should be in a good place once we are all back in the gym. They close up the conversation with talking about how we all need to stick together during this time. It is a tough situation and it can be a rollercoaster of emotions, but we should all do what we can to support each other and get through this together.
