In this solo episode I speak on the importance of rest and recovery days, and my personal rest and active recovery day protocols. Whether you’re a pro athlete, weekend warrior, or not involved in sports as all - I think rest and recovery days are incredibly important, and I tend to even structure my work routine, not just training routine, with the same approach.

Topics:

  • Terminology, such as: nervous system, parasympathetic vs sympathetic states, periodization, volume & intensity, cognitive stress
  • Why discipline doesn't mean not taking any days off (and toxic hustle culture)
  • Why athletes / workaholics often struggle to take days off
  • How often I take rest days
  • How often I take active recovery days and what I do for training on those days
  • Self-regulation and being reactive with your training schedule
  • Deload weeks and taking an offseason

In this podcast we have my friend Jenna Blasman, snowboarding and 2014 Winter Olympian for Team Canada in the sport of Slopestyle snowboarding! Interestingly, our story took similar paths when it came to injury and mental health, however mine occurred from NOT making the Olympic Games in 2014, and hers from MAKING IT to those very same Olympics. Jenna's story (and this conversation) is raw and real, and touches on important topics for athletes and anyone who has dealt with pressure leading up to a big event, and the continued pressure to maintain a certain identity afterwards. Jenna also recently announced her poetry book, Tidal Wave, which touches on the same topics discussed today.

This episode is guaranteed to leave you feeling motivated! This conversation was definitely in my top 3 of the year, and I think you may agree! Charles is an incredible speaker who was once the 6th fastest man on Earth until a 99% tear of his quad sent him packing his bags to move back home to live with his mom, unsure of what life would look like next. He went from feeling like he went from the top of the world to the bottom, to reframing that perspective and starting to share his story and help others through that journey. As Charles became more vulnerable in sharing his story, others began to open themselves up to him as well, and he has now spoke on several stages, founded Thrive events, and created the Thrive planner!

When it comes to marketing yourself on social media, YOU are your competitive advantage. I often am asked about personal branding, and why / if you need it. My answer is YES, and I often see confusion as to the why/if, based on misconceptions of WHAT a personal brand even is. If you feel like a personal brand means fitting yourself into a little box, watch this for a refreshing take on what a personal brand actually is, and how you can build it authentically.

Grow your business: www.93agency.com

SUMMARY: Separate into lists: what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, what you can be paid for (this is growing in our digital age!) The Ikigai Venn diagram has intersections that show, your passion, your mission, your work. These are sections where some intersect, but not all. The ultimate dream is to spend your time doing something that’s in the middle of all the circles (or on all the lists), your IKIGAI, but it’s not necessary, as a balanced life looks different to everyone, and your top passion doesn’t HAVE to be your main form of work. Maybe you want a certain high paying job or business to be able to spend time working on your side passion or mission, or to go on trips with your family or whatever it may be. Self awareness is key! Steps to figure out your why:

Follow your passions and notice them

Remember your passions don’t have to pay the bills. Doing things just for fun is worthwhile Note down what lights you up when you feel that way

Spend time reflecting and writing things down. Otherwise we get caught up and don’t notice until months or years later that we have built something that is not serving our current of future life or fulfilling us Try new things and notice what you do and do not like

SUMMARY

The secret? #SelfAwareness! Emotional intelligence is HUGE in our ever digital world, where we are both more and less connected than ever. Especially when it comes to success, we need to have a solid grasp on who we are, what drives us, and how to read ourselves from moment to moment so we can truly understand ourselves and proactively manage our thoughts and behaviours. One study undertaken by Cornell that studied high level execs showed that self-awareness was the strongest predictor of success. Listen to learn more about the POWER of self-awareness, why it's hard to build, how cognitive bias gets in the way, and how you can build it in yourself. Love learning about self-awareness? Me too! Let's discuss on IG!

SUMMARY:

My message to everyone young and old, effort is cool. Being passionate is cool. Trying hard at things is cool. It will get you places. So ignore the haters, and keep doing you.

Growing up I was bullied for having big goals, for calling my shot, and for being passionate about whatever I put my mind to. This can easily hold many of us back, and it's time to say who the f*ck cares. Do what makes you happy and ignore the rest. Don't let anyone stop you from chasing after your dreams or starting something new. The same people who once made fun of me for saying I wanted to be a pro snowboarder followed me and shared my success once I made it... the same people who made fun of my podcast started one of their own... so just do you!

SUMMARY:

The New Year brings about a lot of #motivation to hustle for #entrepreneurs & athletes. We all have big ambitions, however, we often let this push us past our limits without noticing until it’s too late. #Burnout is something that affects us all, and is not something to glamorize as a “right of passage”. Remember, hard work is important, but smart work is even more important.

5 keys to avoiding burnout:

  1. Manage expectations around balance. You can achieve anything, but not everything.

  2. Build routines that involve rest and schedule days/ time off even when you don’t feel you need it.

  3. Sleep more and take care of your health.

  4. Set limits and respect them.

  5. Say no to things that are not a great fit or take away your energy from pursuing your top goal.

On a serious note, chronic stress is not something to mess around with. Not only can it cause short-term health problems, but also serious long-term repercussions.

Kyle Doucette balances being a Crossfit coach and working with at risk youth all while opening the doors to his new gym, Orleans CrossFit, with his 2 business partners. I (93 Agency and myself) have been working with Crossfit Orleans since just before launch, and I was excited to sit down and chat about Kyle's journey of opening his own gym. Whether you own a gym, want to own a gym, or want to jump into entrepreneurship of any kind, you'll get some great takeaways from what Kyle is currently going through as a new business owner.
