Elden Nelson is the author of the popular Fat Cyclist blog, a 23-time finisher of the Leadville 100 MTB race, one of the hosts of the Leadville podcasts as well as the Marginal Gains podcast. Elden on his love of the Leadville 100 and the town of Leadville; “Maybe it’s kind of the same way I love riding my hometown trails more than I love riding just about anywhere else, I’ve done the trails in Quarter Canyon hundreds of times now because I can do them right out the door and it’s not like I see or experience anything new while one doing it, but the cumulative memory and joy is like ‘this is literally my happy place, this is my home’. And Leadville has the same sort of feel as well. Plus I do love the town, and I do love the intensity of the race, and honestly, I kind of enjoy that I know it so well and people do want to ask me questions about it. It’s fun to be the guy who knows something, every once in a while.”

Pete and Tyler chat with Chris McDougall about his new book, Running with Sherman, burro racing in Leadville Colorado and his iconic book, Born to Run. Chris, on the genesis of Born to Run; “I was just trying to huff out a few miles and do the basic minimum physical requirement to not be morbidly obese, that was my goal in life, and I just kept getting injured all the time. I think that’s the reason Born to Run really resonated with people, was because I think it came at them from a perspective that a lot of people shared. We’re just trying to work out a little bit, why is so hard? Why is so unpleasant? Why do I have to force myself to do it? And that, to me, was the starting point of Born to Run”.

Pete and Tyler chat with Sarah Hornby of Bikepack Canada about her epic 2019 adventures and plans for 2020. In 2019, Sarah set out complete all the bikepacking routes detailed by her late husband, Ryan Correy, in his book Bikepacking in the Canadian Rockies.

Sarah, on her inspiration for her summer bikepacking project: “It was probably about a year ago now that I think about it, I had just come back from a month in France, I was doing a hike across the Alps and like most adventure or goal oriented people I was kinda like, what do I want to do next here? And, I’d spent all this time hiking, and thinking ok, if I’m going to run this Bikepack Canada thing, I’ve got to actually do a little more bikepacking! So, prior to Ryan’s death he’d been working on a guidebook called bikepacking in the Canadian Rockies, and that outlined 10 routes in Alberta and B.C., multi-way routes and he’d scouted them all and really worked on it right up until he was sick, and he was fine tuning the book even while he was sick. So, I had this idea to ride all the routes.”
