"The people of Lebanon love life", says Ahmad Fahs. And they love classic cars, too.

Ahmad calls himself an "International Classic Car Ambassador", having built his own car collection at home, buying cars overseas, and traveling extensively in Europe to learn more about his passion. He's built a local car club called "South Classics" and his Instagram @classics.with.fahsoun has a loyal following where he shares his own rides (and much more).

To Westerners, Lebanon seems an unlikely place to discover a vibrant car culture, but this episode will change your viewpoint on that. It's a resilient and optimistic country where the people look to the future while respecting the past- including all sorts of automotive treasures.

From the moment he saw midget racers in Pasadena as a kid in the late 1940s, Jim Busby was hooked on cars.

He became a hot rodder, a mechanic, a drag racer, and by the 1970s he was behind the wheel of Lolas and Porsches on road circuits in the US and Europe.

Jim made his mark at places like Lime Rock, Sebring, Daytona, Monza, the Nurburgring, and of course, Le Mans.

He also had many successful years building engines and cars and managing his own racing team, culminating with the mighty Porsche 962.

In this wide ranging conversation, Jim Busby reflects on his fifty year career in motorsport, recalling the machines, friends and rivalries that shaped his life in motorsport.

Four little letters: SEMA. This simple acronym helps drive the 300 million dollar US automotive aftermarket industry.

Every year, thousands of companies descends on Las Vegas, Nevada to showcase their latest and greatest products- everything from exhausts and lift kits to lighting and detail supplies.

The Specialty Equipment Market Association was founded in 1963, originally to promote "speed equipment" (bolt-on, go-fast parts!) and the first SEMA exhibition took place in the bowels of Dodger Stadium. Over the next six decades it grew into a massive must-see event that now encompasses not just new products, but lots of events within the event, including the now-famous "Battle of the Builders", where the best customizers reveal their epic creations.

SEMA requires a dizzying amount of planning, logistics and promotion, and Tom Gattuso is the man who orchestrates the frenzy of activity behind this world-famous automotive trade show.

On a narrow street in Tokyo, there's a nondescript little workshop known as Naito Engineering, where some of the world's most desirable sports and racing cars are cared for by a small team of men.

Founded by Shinichi Naito in 1952, it's now a third generation business where, on any given day, you might find a Ferrari 250LM on the lift or a Porsche racing engine being rebuilt. Shinichi's son Masao and his grandsons So and Kei now carry on the tradition.

For seven years, filmmaker Ben Bertucci has been documenting the life of the shop, and the result is the new feature-length film "One of One", which premieres September 1 on Prime Video and Apple TV+.

In this episode, Ben and So join Maurice to talk about the making of the film and what makes Naito Engineering so special.

In the early 1960s, Lincoln Small fell in love with the perfomance-tuned FIATs built by Abarth. Soon he was obsessed with them, leading to a business venture with a pair of backyard-engineer brothers, John and Geoff Anstead, in which the three became the Abarth agents in the United Kingdom.

Under the Radbourne Motors banner, they imported, prepared, sold and raced the whole range of Abarth cars.

Now Lincoln Small has written an engaging and endearing account of his life among these cars entitled "Abarth, Radbourne Racing and Me: A memoir of iconic cars and racing adventures".

In this episode, Lincoln shares just some of the many experiences and classic machines that shaped his professional life.

Few people speak more passionately about cars than John Nikas. He's a longtime vintage racing driver, an author of dozens of books, and a sought-after public speaker on automotive subjects.

His first love was for British sports cars in all their crudeness and stubborn tradition, but that was only the gateway to a lifetime spent behind the wheel and the writing desk.

In this conversation, John shares his thoughts about things like old MGs, the folly of the original Porsche 911, the heyday of Lotus in competition, some giants of racing, and the state of the car culture.

The "Golden Age of Auto Racing" began after World War II and lasted until the early Seventies. It's a period that is frequently romanticized.

But that thin veneer was shattered at the 24 Hours of Le Mans on the afternoon of June 11, 1955, when a catastrophic collision caused the deaths of Mercedes-Benz driver Pierre Levegh and at least 83 spectators. Here's the story of that terrible day and its aftermath.

This episode was originally released in 2022 and is now updated and remastered.

Gasoline, Diesel and even jet fuel made out of thin air- it sounds like science fiction, but it's now a reality.

Rob McGinnis and his team at Prometheus Fuels in Santa Cruz, California have developed a way to extract the elemental building blocks from the atmosphere and turn it into synthetic hydrocarbons that can then be formulated into just about any fuel you want.

They say they'll beat the current price you see at the pump, and the process is carbon neutral, relying on what's already swirling around us. This could be the future of fuel!

Let's be honest: we all spend way too much time online looking at cars for sale, right? It's irresistible. It's almost as if we're building a "virtual" car collection.

And that's the whole idea behind this episode- pick some cars to suit a few different needs and see what it might cost to put them all in your garage.

But an unlimited budget would make this easy- so keep it reasonable. You don't have to be rich to have fun with cars.

Daniel Sexton Gurney (1931-2018) was a Southern California Hot-Rodder who became one of the most successful racing drivers in the history of motorsport, with wins in Saloon Car, Sports Car, NASCAR, Indy Car and Formula One.

Gurney raced for the Arciero Brothers, Luigi Chinetti's North American Racing Team, Ferrari, Brabham, BRM and Porsche before teaming up with Carroll Shelby to found All American Racers in 1964.

Gurney was always seeking out men of motorsport at the top of their game: he collaborated with Colin Chapman of Lotus, engine maestro Harry Weslake, and the ambitious cadre at Ford Motor Company, who were intent on taking on the world's best.

Gurney helped to pioneer the rear engine layout at the Indianapolis 500, spelling the end of Indy's Roadster Era in Champ Car racing, and AAR fielded the Gurney Eagle Formula One chassis for the first time in 1966.

1967 was a banner year for Gurney, winning the Belgian Grand Prix in the Eagle Mk1- the first Grand Prix win for an American constructor since 1921. He also won overall at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with his co-driver A.J. Foyt in the Ford GT 40 Mk IV.

Gurney retired as a driver in 1970, but continued to operate All American Racers for the rest of his life, famously partnering with Toyota in IMSA-GT and CART.

As a driver, Dan Gurney chalked up 63 victories over all motorsport categories, and All American Racers achieved 78 total wins as a constructor. His influence and contributions in the world of motor racing continue to inspire the next generation.

In this episode, Maurice sits down Dan's son, Justin Gurney, and car collector Kip Cyprus to talk all about the life and times of a true motorsport legend.

After all, that's what you want in a race horse: and pure specimen on the edge of control. And for years, that's what Ferrari's customers got when they were handed the keys of a new road car- under that sexy coachwork was a race-bred machine.

But there came a time when the firm's patrons wanted more refinement and sophistication. That car came in 1966 as the Ferrari 330 GTC. Soon it was proclaimed the finest Ferrari road car ever built.

In this episode, author Maurice Khawam discusses his new book, "Ferrari 330 GTC: Elegance and Pedigree". It's an exhaustive and painstaking work that will long serve as a reference for restorers, collectors and concours judges, as well as those who seek to understand the history of the Ferrari brand and the talented individuals behind it.

His latest work chronicles the fascinating subculture of Porsche "Outlaws"- highly personalized automobiles that reflect the rebellious streak of their builders and owners.

Outlaws defy the conventional, and as an old-school Hot Rodder himself, Ross immediately recognized and appreciated this special phenomenon within the world of Porsche enthusiasts.

Let us take you inside one of the most bizarre classic car auctions ever: RM Sotheby's JUNKYARD Auction (AKA the Rudi Klein Collection).

For decades, the reclusive Mr. Klein tucked away scores of desirable European sports cars. His Los Angeles salvage yard, "Porche Foreign Auto", was known for harboring hundreds of rare machines behind its walls, many of which had met with an untimely end- smashed seemingly beyond repair. But the decades of dry storage paid off, because most went far beyond their one-time scrap value in what was certainly one of the most unlikely auctions in the history of classic car culture.

In this episode, Jonas Lach of Jonny's Garage and Daniel Harrison of Limit 55 join Maurice to recount their impression of the Junkyard, as well as sharing their personal car stories and how they see the future of the hobby.

In a suburban garage in Alberta, Canada, Brandon Hegedus builds eye-popping replicas of some of the world's rarest and most desirable performance cars.

We're talking cars that virtually no one can own because they are either so rare or valuable that the only option is to recreate them.

It all started as a personal challenge to replicate a 1961 Ferrari Tipo 156 "Sharknose" Formula 1 car (the originals no longer exist).

Using modern materials like carbon fiber, Brandon recreated the iconic Sharknose bodywork. Underneath, he used modern mechanicals that approximated the original performance of the Tipo 156, all tied to a scratch built frame. The result was a screamer of a car with stunning looks.

That first build got the attention of the media and created fantastic opportunities. Brandon is now a full-time builder who's bringing his clients' dream cars to life.

**Of all the internal combustion engines ever built, the Rolls-Royce Merlin, a 27-liter supercharged V-12 that powered fighters, bombers, boats and tanks, is arguably one of the most famous in history.

Developed on the eve of World War II, the Merlin helped win the Battle of Britain and eventually the liberation of an enslaved Europe. It was manufactured on both sides of the Atlantic by two of the finest carmakers in the world. This is the story of how it was developed, and what it meant to the many (and the few).**

The early days of the motorcar were troublesome, frustrating, and most of all, adventurous- if you agree that "adventure" by definition means there's a chance of risking life and limb.

And why else would mankind attempt what might seem like folly or futility, other than for the excitement that adventure brings?

Such was the case with the 1907 Peking to Paris Motorcar Challenge, a stunt invented by a Paris newspaper and embraced by a motley bunch of daring automobilists: 8000 miles across tractless wastes and deep mire, pushing men and machines to the limit.

Kassia St. Clair has written a rousing account of it all entitled "The Race to the Future: 8,000 Miles to Paris - The Adventure That Accelerated the Twentieth Century".

And now, she's here to tell you about it.

Car builder, fabricator, collector, entrepreneur, TV presenter and racing driver are but a few of the things you'll find on Derek Drinkwater's resumé. He's always been interested in cars but one the really captivted him was the slab-sided Cadillac Series 61 special entered by American Sportsman Briggs Cunningham in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

It was unlike anything ever raced at LeMans, and the Americans were certainly a spectacle.

It was a fairly stock 1950 Cadillac custom-skinned by Grumman Aircraft Company of Long Island, New York, and when the French race fans saw it, they dubbed it "Le Monstre".

The nickname turned out to be a sign of affection, and the 331 cubic-inch V8 powered beast finished eleventh overall (its sister ship, a stock Series 61 coupe was nicknamed "Petit Pataud", or "Little Clumsy", finished tenth).

Derek has now raced his Le Monstre replica at Le Mans Classic, Daytona Classic, Laguna Seca, Road America and Watkins Glen. In Part One of the story he tells how he built it and began to fettle it on the track.

In the 1950s, General Motors culminated its industry dominance with an annual traveling exhibition know as the Motorama, showcasing the very latest trends in styling, engineering and modern conveniences. However, once they were done on the show circuit, the cars were marked for destruction.

Fortunately, many of these marvels escaped that fate, and their eventual savior was Joe Bortz.

As a kid growing up in suburban Chicago, Joe was fascinated by cars he saw in the neighborhood dealerships. He went on to become a prolific collector of many cars, but especially the Dream Cars.

Now they're being shown to the world in a new exhibit at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles entitled "General Motors' Marvelous Motorama: Dream Cars from the Joe Bortz Auto Collection".

**This one's from the vault- but updated and re-recorded with new details!

The new film "FERRARI" looks at Enzo Ferrari in the middle of his life, when the company he built was only ten years old. But the story of his final days is worth a new look.**

**Enzo Ferrari built his machines to race and win- and they became the world's most renowned sports cars, coveted by the rich and famous.

But when he lost full control of his company in 1969, the cars slowly began to lose their competition-bred character. He decided to do something about it.

Near the end of his life, Enzo Ferrari ensured the creation of the raw, uncompromising, 200 mile per hour F40- and he trusted one man to help him.

Over twenty years ago, director Michael Mann began to think about bringing the story of Enzo Ferrari to the silver screen.

It's probably the most anticipated film of 2023- a look into the personal life of the notoriously private Enzo (played by Adam Driver) and his wife Laura (Penelope Cruz), framed by the backdrop of the 1957 running of the Mille Miglia: the grueling thousand-mile Italian road race

When it came to capturing the thrill and brutality of racing on film, there was only one person Mann could trust with the task: stunt coordinator Robert Nagle.

Robert's resume is impressive. He's an Academy Award winner, and the maestro behind car stunts in films like Baby Driver, John Wick, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, Gran Turismo, Ford v. Ferrari and more.

In this episode, Robert takes us behind-the-scenes of Ferrari and shares his insights on the art of driving fast on film.

There are few men left who could sit down and give you a detailed first-hand account of the entire U.S. Space Program.

Don Nichols was a NASA insider who began his career during the Mercury program (the first manned U.S. space flights) and retired while the Space Shuttle was still the world's dominant form of manned orbital flight.

Nichols worked on Cold War era fighter-interceptors, the X-15 rocket plane, the guidance system for the Pershing missile, and all the way to the mighty Saturn rocket that pushed the Apollo capsules to the moon as if it were the hand of God.

Nichols was a player in America's cutting edge aerospace technology for decades. This conversation is a fascinating and detailed breakdown of man's greatest achievement: the conquest of outer space.

**There was a time when you could find a slightly scruffy Ferrari 250 for sale in a tiny ad at the back of your favorite car magazine- at an asking price of a few thousand dollars.

Today, those same cars change hands under the bright lights of an auction tent, and the whole car world is watching them command millions of dollars.

It's a big business, but it wouldn't exist without the seemingly boundless devotion of buyers eager to own and drive these machines. "What price glory?" they might say.

David Gooding is the founder of Gooding & Company. He's been an enthusiast, collector and purveyor of the world's finest automobiles for decades.

In this episode, he returns to the show to give an insider's perspective on a year's worth of auctions, highlighting some particular cars and what makes them great- as well as some insights on valuations, buying and selling, and the sometimes unpredictable moves in the market.

In Northern Indiana, a team of happy folks build single cylinder machines that combine vintage appeal with modern technology.

Richard Worsham is the man behind Janus Motorcycles, and his philosophy is all about the fun and freedom of riding an easy, unfussy bike.

He founded the company straight out of college- the first was a 50cc model. Janus now makes a 250 and a 450, each with styling cues and riding position reminiscent of motorcycles of the Teens and Twenties.

Local suppliers and craftsmen are important to their success, as is a sturdy and proven engine design. If you've ever lusted after a vintage bike but don't want the hassle of taking care of an old machine, this might be your ticket to ride.

In 1949, a determined pair of Englishmen took on the whole of Grand Prix racing with their new little cars, and they were the first British Formula team to make the scene at the dawn of a new era.

John Heath and George Abecassis built precious few machines, and their efforts are largely unknown today... but the story of their HWM racing team is a fascinating and often surprising one.

Simon Taylor enjoyed a long and successful career in publishing and motorsport broadcasting. His two-volume book "John, George and the HWMS" is the definitive work on this subject.

Guy Jenner is the CEO of HWM Aston-Martin Limited, the world's oldest Aston Martin dealer. His career has allowed him to trade in (and enjoy) some of the most sporting automobiles ever built.

In May 1923, thirty-seven cars roared away into history as the first competitors in a daunting new race held in a small French country town.

It was an obscure village called Le Mans- inhabited since before the Romans- but soon the entire world would know this place, and the cars and drivers who propelled into glory as the most important endurance race ever conceived.

Richard Williams has made his career as an editor and sports writer (The Guardian, The Times of London) as well as an accomplished author of motorsport history.

With so much incredible performance available in everyday cars today, the first great era of the motorcar is often overlooked.

But in fact, most of the technology we take for granted was developed by about 1915. Many "Brass Era" cars- those produced from about 1903 to 1915- were not only solid performers, but also exceptionally well-engineered and built.

The Two Generations Collection holds many great examples of such machines, and it's being auctioned by Bonhams on April 29. A father and son team assembled this collection over a period of six decades and now it's being sent on to a new group of enthiusiasts.

The auction kicks off another terrific event, the Second Annual Audrain Veteran Car Tour in Newport Rhode Island. In this episode, Bonhams Senior Specialist Evan Ide talks about some highlights of the auction as well as the distinct flavor and excitement of touring in these veteran cars.

"Don't build a racetrack", says Jeremy Porter, but that's just what he did.

As a dirt biker and then a kart racer, Jeremy had the need for speed. And he had some big ideas about the race track experience- what he could do bigger and better.

As  the Creator and CEO of Atlanta Motorsports Park, he took his business savvy and love for racing and built a playground for fellow speed freaks of all ages.
It's not just a track, it's a home away from home for like-minded souls.

It was a crazy thing to dream up, let alone attempt for real. This is the story of how he made it happen.

For over two decades, photographer John G. Zimmerman covered various automotive-related assignments for magazines like Sports Illustrated, The Saturday Evening Post, Life, and others.

A new book, "Auto America: Car Culture 1950s-1970s" celebrates his work in all its Kodachrome and black-and-white glory.

Many of these images have never been published. From the heyday of Detroit to racing circuits and the people who built them, the cars come alive once again.

This is the story behind the book, the man, and his photos as told by his children, Linda and Darryl Zimmerman.

After a long and successful career as a heavy equipment manufacturer and serial entrepreneur, car enthusiast David Brown set out to create something different: he took all the things he loves about classic automobiles and combined them with modern comfort, safety and reliability. The result was a car called the Speedback GT.

The "Golden Age of Auto Racing" began after World War II and lasted until the early Seventies. It's a period that is frequently romanticized.

But that thin veneer was shattered on the afternoon of June 11, 1955, when a catastrophic collision caused the deaths of Mercedes-Benz driver Pierre Levegh and at least 83 spectators. Here's the story of that terrible day and its aftermath.

The unleashing of America's industrial might during World War II is almost unbelievable, and the auto industry held the key.

In his critically acclaimed book "Freedom's Forge: How American Business Produced Victory in World War II", historian and author Arthur Herman unravels the complex story of how the sleeping giant of isolationist America was awakened to lead the free world against tyranny.

On this, the 80th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Dr. Herman revisits this history and specifically the work of Bill Knudsen, the General Motors executive who spearheaded "The Arsenal of Democracy".

In 1961, Ferrari entered the mid-engine era of Formula One cars. They were a little late to the game but the Tipo 156 vindicated itself in dramatic fashion, with Phil Hill winning the Driver's Championship that year.

But once the 156 was done on the circuit, Ferrari destroyed every chassis… eight in total.
And yet dreams do persist.

Brandon Hegedus is a car builder from Calgary Canada who singlehandedly built a stunning 1962 iteration of the  Ferrari Tipo 156  in his garage. In this episode, Brandon walks us through the history of the Tipo 156 and what it took to replicate this legendary car.

Here's a quick update on how the massive overhaul of Apple Podcasts affected many shows in the library.

You've probably noticed that the Apple Podcasts app looks very different now, and it's gained a whole lot of convenience and utility for users... but there were still bugs when it was released in late April.

You may have noticed problems as a user. But for podcasters, but was an absolute nightmare!

All through the month of May, weird things were happening: shows disappeared. Episodes went into oblivion. Downloads plummeted by 30 per cent.

So here's what you can do: scroll through Horsepower Heritage page on the Apple Podcasts app, and if you see any episodes that are unplayed, it could be that they were missing before but have since been pushed to the app.

If you have any issues, go to horsepowerheritage.com , click on the "Contact" button, and let me know what you've found.

Thanks for listening!

Here's the mid-century modern story of the cars with a jet engine... like we were promised in all those magazines and movies.

The Rover JET-1, the GM Firebirds, and the Chrysler Turbine Car were supposed to be the future. But it was a future that didn't happen.

SUPPORT OUR SPONSOR:http://www.modelcitizendiecast.com SUPPORT THE POD:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/hpheritage

Show Notes

The gas turbine engine revolutionized aviation. Frank Whittle, the father of Great Britain's jet propulsion development, was working on theory and design in the 1920s. Whittle was at first dismissed by some of his peers as well as the Air Ministry, but was vindicated by the late Thirties... and the Gloster E.28/39 first flew in May 1941.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloster_E.28/39

The Rover Company had worked with Whittle's company, Power Jets Ltd. on their first gas turbine engines. In 1945, Rover began investigating gas turbines for use in automobiles and by 1950 they had an operational experimental open two-seater, the JET1. While it excited the public, JET1 was plagued by extreme exhaust gas temperatures and terrible fuel economy.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_Jets
https://revivaler.com/rover-gas-turbine-cars/

Chrysler Corporation's George Huebner was an early believer the the potential of the gas turbine and sold the company on a development program. They built several test-bed cars in the 1950s and solved the exhaust heat problem by essentially pumping the heat back into the combustion phase. This also improved fuel economy and by the early Sixties Chrysler was ready to do a small production run of a clean sheet turbine car design. Fifty cars were distributed to the public and driven over a million mile in three years.

https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/a35205253/1963-chrysler-turbine-car-drive-revisted/

But the cost of mass-producing turbine engines and the coming need to comply with emissions regulations, as well as the company's emerging financial difficulties, ultimately shelved the idea of the Chrysler Turbine Car. However, it's a fascinating example of pushing innovation and the optimism of postwar America in the days of the Space Race.
