The 4th National Indigenous Languages Survey (NILS 4) has revealed 177 languages are currently being spoken or used and 113 languages are being revived.The survey is conducted by the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies. The working title of the film “In A Life-Time” is told through recollections and interviews about Darby’s life during his racing days having raced in the Melbourne Cup and for the Queen’s Cup. Post-racing, Darby was a community leader and mentor as one of the founders of the “Murri Court” and establishing a jockey school in France.

Join Dr Lee Shepphard as she yarns with Kunja Man Malachi Murljacic a First Nations’ Ironman who just completed a 14 + month health and wellbeing journey completing Cairns ‘IRONMOB’ triathlon in June 2025. To complete this IRONMAN event (the hardest one-day endurance event in the world) competitors must swim 3.8km, bike 180km and run 42.2km within 17 hours.
The event is curated by ‘TriMob’ who also offer other programs such ‘Mob the Marathon’, ‘Mob to Mob School’ and ‘Mob to Mob Community’.

Siena Mayutu Wurmarri Stubbs is a young Yolŋu woman of the Gumatj clan of the Yirritja moiety. Her homeland is Buwaka.
When Siena was 12, she took up photography on her iPad, but was gifted a camera from her aunty. In a short period of time, Siena was an avid photographer and had published her own book of birds. Our Birds: Ŋilimurruŋgu Wäyin Malanynha is the result of that inspiration.
Going on to achieve graduating Film Studies at QUT and landing a job with Triple A – Murri Country in our Multi Media Corner…David Williams catches up with Siena to shine the light on some of her current accomplishments to bring us all up to date with our Young Talented Super Star we are beyond blessed too have on our Triple A – Murri Country All-Star Radio Broadcasting and Multi- Media Team.

They talk through some of the books that have shaped their own lives, as well as the growing political literacy around neurodivergence and its intersections with race, gender, class, and sexuality. From “Another Day in the Colony” to “Joyful Militancy”, Chelsea, David and Han talk through the work that books can do in supporting the struggle for justice as it is waged across multiple frontlines, from this colony and across the globe.
Han Reardon-Smith (they/them) is “a white settler musicker, radio/podcast producer, community organiser, and thinker-scholar living on the unceded land of the Jagera, Yuggera Ugarapul and Turrbal Peoples.” Their work and thinking are “rooted in queer/trans and disabled collaborative and contaminative co-creation with other “holobionts with history” — soundmakers and artmakers, physical and social environments, ecologies, histories, complicities, and narratives, exploring the emergent possibilities of making-kin and finding agency within community (soundmaking as kinmaking: musickin). Han works as a postdoctoral research associate to Wiradjuri trans/non-binary Professor Sandy O’Sullivan on their project Saving Lives: Mapping the influence of Indigenous LGBTIQA+ creative artists in the Critical Indigenous Studies Department (Macquarie University, on Dharug Country) and as part of the Centre for Global Indigenous Futures. As a flutist and electronic musician, Han plays solo under the moniker cyberBanshee, and with Magan-djin’s radically inclusive symphonic pop collective Matt Hsu’s Obscure Orchestra, as well as improv and experimentation trios Rogue Three and It’s Science And Feelings. They are one of the community organising thinker-troublemakers behind the Brisbane Free University, its Radical Reading Group, and its 4ZZZ community radio and podcast offshoot, the Radio Reversal Collective. Han also produces the podcast Saltwater Library with RMIT DECRA scholar Dr Rebecca Olive.

Sianna is the former brand manager for Clothing the Gap, which is a social enterprise fashion company dedicated to clothes that carry messages that matter. After helping to build Clothing the Gap into the incredible brand it is today, Sianna decided to step out and into the world of production, co-founding Blakground, a majority Aboriginal owned and led production company specialising in video, stills and creative development. She explains that Blakground is designed to “facilitate safe spaces for First Nations people by creating culturally minded content that captures stories and celebrates culture and creativity.” As a company, Blakground is dedicated to improving the representation and visibility of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across all part of the arts, and particularly as producers.
In this rich and wide-ranging chat, Rachael & Sianna reflect on the joys and challenges of building Blak businesses that put ethics, politics, and community at the centre of their ethos. They talk about the work that Blak brands can do in amplifying grassroots struggle, and providing spaces for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists to make the kinds of work that really matters to them.

We learn a bit about how these characters came to life, and what brought the book into being, as well as learning about Tina’s own ongoing project of refusing to live on the terms of the colony, and prioritising care, love, joy and, above all, life.

Raymond is a Quandamooka songman and youth justice worker who has worked alongside his family and community to keep culture and language alive. In the first of three beautiful conversations recorded on Quandamooka country, Raymond reflects on the choices that his family have made to work on re-connecting and revitalising their culture: from teaching their kinship lore to their younger generations, to rebuilding song and dance, practicing ceremony and law, and maintaining their custodial responsibilities to Country and community.
This week, Elizabeth & Raymond talk about the value of kinship law in shaping their own relationship, as well as the ways it has anchored the broader cultural work that their family have done in revitalising song and dance. They reflect on the generosity of the Brady family, who shared their Kuku Yalanji traditions of song and dance with South East Queensland mobs, and encouraged them to work to rebuild and re-vitalise their own local traditions of song and dance. And they reflect on the powerful lessons that this process of reconnection and revitalisation has left: that nothing that is lost cannot be re-grown; that our collective memory always stretches further than we think; and that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures will always be stronger than the violent colonial forces that try to contain it.

In this episode, Chelsea & David catch up with human rights advocate, educator and “street-trained” paralegal, Charandev Singh. Charandev has acted for families in inquests and the reform work that flows from deaths in custody; in family violence matters and inquests; in asylum seeker work; police accountability work; investigations; and the systemic reform work that flows from it all. Charandev is an acute observer of people, which explains in part why his photographic portraiture is as exquisite as it is. He is an unparalleled expert in his understanding of and experience in systems, processes, media, politics and governance, and his political and strategic acumen make journalists sigh with relief, coroners quake, and prosecutors and police weak at the knees.
Across this powerful and heavy conversation, Chelsea and David learn from Charandev’s frontline work with families navigating the violence of coronial inquests, and why he’s made the decision to step away from this work to hone other tools in the ongoing fight for justice. Charandev reflects on the extraordinary generosity and insight of the families and communities he has worked with and walked alongside over the past 3 decades, often during some of the hardest times in their lives. And he reflects on the lessons that the family’s he has worked alongside have learned about the violent operation of coronial inquests and state inquiries: far from delivering justice and accountability, they primarily function as tools through which state-sanctioned colonial violence is legitimised, enabled, and sustained.

Tune in for a very special DOUBLE episode of Let’s Talk – Black Power as Ruby catches up with Uncle Jim Everett-puralia meenamatta. He is from the clan plangermairreenner of the Turbuna (Mt Ben Lomond) people in Tasmania.
In this wide-ranging conversation, Uncle Jim talks us through his childhood, growing up between Flinders Island, Tasmania and Gippsland, Victoria, and leaving school at 14 and spending 15 years working as a fisherman and merchant seaman, 3 years in the Australian Regular Army, working as a steeplejack, rigger, and many other skilled jobs. Ruby & Uncle Jim reflect on his 50 years of formal involvement in the Aboriginal Struggle, including a long history working in and around Aboriginal Affairs, in community organisations, and on the frontlines of the struggle to protect Country and fight for land rights. Uncle Jim talks about his experiences traveling around the continent and visiting remote Aboriginal communities, learning about the diverse ways that communities are fighting for Country and defending their land against the ecologically destructive processes of mining, deforestation and pollution.
They also talk about some of Uncle Jim’s current work with the Bob Brown Foundation, and his long engagement with land and forest defence struggles in lutruwita, from the Franklin River protests in the 1980s, as well as the campaigns to protect the takayna rainforest, and most recently, the Styx forest campaign. As he explains, the consequences of continued logging of old-growth native forests are “far beyond reason” and the “impacts on the relational ecosystems not only cause major imbalance of the whole native forest network in the Styx Valley, but also to Palawa / Pakana people.”

GLVES, also known as Michelle Levings, creates a “blend of after-dark and other-worldly Blak Folktronica”, combining “electronic elements, soothing vocal loops, and organic instruments” alongside other visual mediums including photography, music videos and social media. This combination creates an artistic vision dedicated to understanding history and heritage, bloodline, and the stories she has inherited, driven by a deep appreciation of her Kaurareg, Fijian and Polynesian heritage, and a heartfelt longing to further connect with her culture.
In this rich and wide-ranging conversation, Rachael & Michelle talk about what led her to this creative project, and how it relates to her broader political commitment to justice, equality, and an end to gendered, racial, and sexual violence.

Another Tuesday, another episode of Let’s Talk Black Power with our guest host, Kevin Yow Yeh, bringing us the second episode in his mini-series with the brilliant Baramadagal artist, activist, and lawyer, Jayne Christian. Last week, Kevin and Jayne caught up to talk a bit about her exhibition, Djiriyay & Revolution, currently showing at Blacktown Arts on Dharug country. This week, they dive even deeper into the animating themes and ideas that drive Jayne’s work as an artist and activist; from her fierce commitment to honouring Indigenous sovereignty and presence, to her interest in the processes by which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can resist and refuse colonial narratives.
This is the final of our two episodes recorded with Jayne, bringing together some special field recordings from the launch event from her exhibition in May 2024 as well as a longer-form discussion between Jayne and Kevin. They learn a bit about Thom’s early life, and particularly his formative experiences working in Cunnamulla in the 1970s. They talk a bit about the experiences and relationships that led Thom to decide to work on and support projects like “A Dumping Ground: A History of the Cherbourg Settlement” (2001), “Is that you, Ruthie?” (2003) written by Aunty Ruth Hegarty, and “Yalanya: That’s the way it is” (2024), which tells the story of Pastor Don Brady and his family.
Chelsea and David talk about Thom’s approach to historical research that is led first by the personal histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and then draws on archival research to deepen and expand their story. They talk about the challenges of working in and for community, and the care and trust that is required to work alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families who want to tell the truth about their history. And they reflect on the way that Thom’s work consistently ends up centering stories of resistance, survival, dignity, care, and love; disrupting the traditional approach to writing histories of colonisation that position Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people only as passive or hapless victims.

They reflect on the limitations of reconciliation week in a country that still can’t talk honestly about racism, and the irony of “hoping” for reconciliation while refusing to acknowledge the violence of racism in the everyday lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. They enjoy Tony Armstrong’s proposal for a RESTITUTION week to replace reconciliation week, and David courageously commits to giving up the butterscotch cupcakes in favour of an anti-racism grounded in Indigenous sovereignty, self-determination, and struggle. Chelsea and David then turn their gaze onto the sporting field: from this week’s viral clip of a 9 year old boy, tearfully reflecting on racial violence, to the continued targeting of Latrell Mitchell, to the failure of the Australian Human Rights Commission to resolve the complaints about racism at Hawthorn football club. Some listeners might have seen Uncle Robert in the media earlier this year, as he participated in this year’s Mardi Gras parade in honour of the life and legacy of his twin brother Malcolm. Their story was shared on a very special episode of the 7.30 Report, which saw iconic images released of Malcolm at Mardi Gras in the 1980s, dressed up as a very sparkly Captain Cook. In this beautiful and important yarn, Kevin learns about the Cole family’s early years in north Queensland, all the way through to Robert and Malcolm’s decision to take their band on the road to Sydney, to make their name as musicians and dancers. We learn about the fear and pain that the family experienced when Malcolm tested positive for HIV and moved back to Townsville, as well as their harrowing experience trying to ensure that Malcolm received adequate health care after his diagnosis. Drawing on his personal experiences, Uncle Robert reflects on the violence of racism, homophobia, stigma and discrimination, and the way that it shaped Malcolm’s experiences towards the end of his life. And yet he also reflects on the joy of remembering Malcolm’s life and legacy – his vibrant energy, his thirst for life, and the power with which he walked through a world that tried to deny his experiences at every turn.
As always, another powerful and urgent reminder that Black Power is found and expressed in many different ways: sometimes, in a sparkly Captain Cook costume, dancing on top of a moving float at Mardi Graz. In this important and timely episode of Let’s Talk – Black Knowing, Chelsea & David catch up with Palestinian-Egyptian writer, lawyer, academic researcher, mother of four, and current ARC Future Fellow in the School of Social Sciences at Macquarie University, Dr. Randa Abdel-Fattah. They reflect on the 76th commemoration of the Palestinian Nakba, and the unthinkable violence of the Israeli occupation and the current genocide of Palestinian men, women, and children in Gaza. They talk through the racist logics of zionism, and ways that Palestinians are silenced, repressed, policed, and targeted if they dare speak the truth about Israel’s violent colonial occupation. Randa shares some of her own experiences of zionist repression and violence, including attempts to have her fired from her job, removed from judging panels, and being targeted and smeared by shock jocks and mainstream media outlets.
From their shared experiences of the brutality of colonial institutions, Chelsea and Randa reflect on the ways that colonial media and universities both serve to reproduce the sustaining fictions and fantasies of settler colonialism: from myths of colonial benevolence and civilisation, to the hysterical fantasies of “imaginary spears” through which, as Dr. Amy McQuire explains, Indigenous people resisting colonisation are reframed as “terrorists”, “criminals” and deviants. And they reflect on the emergence of both social media and the university as a site of struggle in this moment: from the power and joy of the student encampments contesting the complicity of universities in genocide; to the courage and power of Palestinian journalists using whatever tools they have to directly challenge the shameful complicity and silence of mainstream media in the so-called west.
All in all: it’s another huge conversation between three powerful and important community scholars who each commit themselves to asking the questions that matter most in this moment: putting their intellectual labour to work in helping build movements of care, joy and justice in the struggle to end to colonial occupation, from the river to the sea.

Rachael & Thomas reflect on his role as Malakai in the 2022 remake of Heartbreak High, and the challenges and joys of playing a role that has become so widely beloved. Alongside his experience playing a central character in a show like Heartbreak High, Thomas also reflects on returning to stage and dance as part of his “tender and exquisite” one-man show, “Blue.” The show, which Thomas wrote as a teenager, grapples with the struggle of a young person finding his way through the transition from childhood to adulthood. Together, Uncle Shane & Malaak mark the 76th anniversary of the 1948 Nakba, which saw the mass expulsion of Palestinians from their homelands by zionist militias, and later by the Israeli Occupation Forces. They reflect on the deep and clear parallels between colonial invasion on this continent and in Palestine, and the relationships of solidarity, strength and trust that exist between Indigenous peoples’ everywhere, as they fight against the occupation and colonisation of their lands.

Tune into Let’s Talk – Black Arts as we bring you the second half of a rich and wide-ranging panel discussion between Aunty Chantay Link, Allirah Fisher, Kristal West and Will Oui, moderated by our very own Rachael Sarra. The discussion, hosted as part of the BEMAC Discussions series at BEMAC in Kangaroo Point on the 29th April this year, brough together these incredible artists and healers to reflect on the unique form of First Nations artistic storytelling and its ancient and contemporary connection to mental health, wellbeing and healing. Together, the panelists reflect on their own experiences as artists, navigating colonial institutions and non-Indigenous audiences, and considering the power and limits of creative work in offer spaces for healing and justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Guided by Rachael, Aunty Chantay, Allirah, Kristal & Will each consider the therapeutic experience of practising and creating artworks that revive culture and improve their wellbeing, and they ask: how can we normalise discussions of mental health as First Nations people in the arts industry? And how can the industry further support First Nations artists to bring their communities with them, and create spaces for healing and justice rather than profit and consumption?

But its not all doom and gloom, with our young scientists turning to bush medicine too find cures for cancer and other diseases such as Parkinson’s.

The collapse of the controversial Youpla Funeral Fund has left 17,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people shattered and millions of dollars missing, as the company was sent into administration late last year, unbeknownst to its clients. The program is for parents and cares of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children aged birth to 5 years, the playgroup is supported by Aboriginal staff, community members and a child health nurse.
