On June 4, 1944, U.S. Naval Task Group 22.3 made sonar contact with German submarine U-505 off the coast of western Africa. After the group opened fire on the submarine, it was damaged and surfaced. The sub, its crew, documents and an Enigma Machine were captured by the Allied Forces and the sub was taken to Bermuda and now resides in the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, IL.
One of the ships in the task group was the USS Jenks (DE-665). On board this ship was my grandfather, Joe Opsitnick. With it being Memorial Day, I reached out to him to get some of the story direct from the source. So please sit back and enjoy this tale of baseball, Naval training and warfare from one of the brave veterans who helped the United States into what it is today.

With the hectic start to 2020, things sometimes get a little strange and discombobulated. And even we here at The Carnival are not immune to such insanity. With that, we would like to present a bit of an older episode. It was right during the big flu plague of 2019, so many people around the area were down with illness, but thankfully our buddy Dave from The False Positive braved the germ infested air to come down and talk some music. We needed a bit of a break from the Christmas hangover, but we talk lots of music, as we tend to do. And also as we tend to do, we didn't stick on our original topic which was 1970s music. Hello Randomers and Randomites.
To use the standard Hollywood defense in regards to bad continuity, time traveling wizards! Now that that's out of the way, we stumbled our way to a flea market and ran across three of the Carnival All-Stars! We're joined by Steve of The Tombstone Hands, Greg of many Rochester bands and Patrick of D&D and MuCCC/DVC fame. So what in the world do you talk about at a flea market? How about the weird things people want to get rid of. A lot of times you run across old movies that you wonder why people bought in the first place, so that's where we went. We're talking some really strange stuff. Old serials, Three Stooges, martial arts movies and the rash of sci-fi movies the world has seen related to the not-so-friendly people of Germany during the Second World War. Definitely an unusual time, but there's lots of stuff to make you laugh.
Keep a close eye out for all of our friends and what they're up to. Hello Randomers and Randomites.
How many of you have ever heard of a pipa? Probably not many of you. It's an ancient Chinese stringed instrument, sometimes referred to as the Chinese Lute, dating back as early as the Qin Dynasty (221 BC - 206 BC). Well today, we at the Carnival, and Rochester in general, are extremely lucky to have here one amazing pipa player, Leah Ou, she of O's Pipa. With many performances in the Rochester area under her belt, the musical talent she possesses is second to none, and we were graced by her presence for an interview about her and the instrument, as well as a very special live performance of two songs.
For the first, she is accompanied on the flute by very talented flautist KeeDgee for a song entitled "Amazon Jungle." This was followed by a new song from O's Pipa's soon-to-be-released album. It was amazing to witness and will no doubt be a delight to listen to. If you're anywhere near Rochester, go see one of her shows and check out her music. You'll thank us later.

The recap of the Hamlin Scream Fest 2019 edition is upon you! Pity for all who weren't there. The weather was better this year and the people were happy to enjoy it and the festivities. You all missed the costume contests (for both humans and dogs), Kaos the Klown and the scream contest. We sat around, shot the breeze and met a few new friends. In typical Carnival fashion, we started with a guest, special effects artist Michael Del Rossa, fended off several bee attacks, and did the interview in several parts due to various goings on. Michael's a very interesting guy, has worked on a ton of movies, and gave us a copy of his latest movie "Book of Evil." Go find it and watch it!
In between his interview portions, we met and talked with Outrider from the local chapter of B.A.C.A. (Bikers Against Child Abuse) to get the history of the organization and what they're all about. It's a very awesome cause, so we would say please check them out for more information. There's chapters all over the world.

Did you ever have a plan that was set in stone until you got to where you were going? Well sometimes it happens, and you just have to roll with out. Our pal Greg Andrews from The Brian Lindsay Band stopped by and our initial plan was to talk comic books from the 1980s. However, when he arrived at our secret location, he mentioned that he was a big fan of the old comic serials from the 1940s and 1950s. So, in typical Carnival style, we switched it up on the fly. So here we go. We talk the old school comic serials, the predecessors of the comic movies we have now and delve a bit into the Batman TV series from the 1960s, with the immortal Adam West. It was a good talk, so sometimes switching things up can be a good thing.

Rob finally convinced me to go hot air ballooning and we had the stereotypical bird peck turn it into a traveling fart basically and we crash landed on the desert island of Gothic Toad, somewhere in the middle of Lake Ontario. While we're waiting for the submarine to cart us out of here, Gothic Toad demands tribute in the form of entertainment. Well, when your notes get blown out of the hot air balloon, sometimes you just have to wing it. So that's what we did. We took all the thoughts rattling around in our heads that could never fill a full episode and mushed them together to make... this. Whatever it is.

What in the wide, wide world of sports is going on here? We'll tell you what it is. We're talking random sports leagues, focusing on ones that aren't in the Big 4 as it were. We're talking weird leagues that came and mostly went, including those that didn't even make it the full season, and the future of where some of these sports could go. Soccer, wrestling, football, hockey... you name it and we probably either talked about it or meant to and forgot.
