With the advent of the connection economy the world marketers came to understand that industrial economy marketing no longer works properly. Joe Pullizzi came to the conclusion that you could use content as a tool or a technique to create new relationships and generate sales, out of his idea the future of marketing emerged.

The issue with the idea of content marketing as it is understood now is that there is no common definition to the word content, nor is there any value in the phrase content marketing. When you take a close look at the definition of content you come to understand that it actually does not mean anything. After 15 years of the concept being around there has not been any major shift from the way companies have always marketed to content marketing because essentially it does not work... that is why Stephen has come up with 'Intelligent Content Marketing'.

Intelligent content marketing anticipates the understanding that the world has changed, we now have ubiquitous connectivity, you can now accurately assess you customer's expectations, needs and fears and with all that in mind you can create a proposition that is designed to reverse the risk for your customer and open the door to build a relationship based on trust and authenticity.

Stephen shares with Jason the idea of becoming ‘indispensable’ inspired from Seth Godin's book ‘Linchpin’. When you become indispensable and you are operating your own business that converts itself into an amazing proposition because if you are truly indispensable then your future is guaranteed. The point Seth Godin makes that if you are an employee and you want to be indispensable, is that companies in the industrial economy are structured in such a way to have Interchangeable parts which do not quite fit with an employee being indispensable as the company would have to rely on that person, however in the connection economy the threat of an employee becoming that vital to an operation is less and less every day.

In an over communicated world the only way to command anybody's attention is to stand out, to be remarkable. When you produce a business that is remarkable by design people are going to be intrinsically interested in it.

Hosted by Jason Black and Stephen Barnes, we dive into the first episode of the series introducing the connection economy, discussing how the way consumers are ready to be communicated is different from how companies actually engage with them.

After 7-8 years of research on how the internet really works and what the connection economy is becoming, four trends were recognised, they come from the thoughts of Stephen's intellectual heroes; Seth Godin, Kevin Kelly, Charlie Munger and Don Tapscott. All of this led to a business plan that incorporates those ideas and anticipates the dynamics of the connection economy where ultimately what you are doing is answering people's questions, helping to solve problems and you tell your own story, so that the party you want to communicate with can understand what you are all about so that they can have a relationship with you based on authenticity and trust.
