The REAL Kathy Lee is an honest podcast for REAL moms. It’s where we talk about real life… real motherhood. Topics will include helicopter parenting, how to really connect with your children, how to find your joy in motherhood, why every mom needs an “all by herself” vacation, how to refrain from jumping in the car and just driving away, and why saying YES is the most powerful response to a young child’s requests.

I often get asked how to deal with NO and MINE in toddler world. I see them both as positive words for this age. Toddlers are realizing that they are indeed human and separate from their parents. Isn’t what we hope all of our children realize! Up until this point someone has made all the decisions for them and they FINALLY have a voice. NO, they don’t want peas for dinner. NO, they don’t want to take a bath. NO, they don’t want to go to bed. I bet some toddlers are sooooo excited that they can finally state their opinion. ON this episode, we will talk about this world of toddlers and the many reasons that no and mine are their favorite words. It really is a good thing.

Also in this episode, I will quickly address some other toddler topics… potty training, biting, and pitching fits. I know for many parents, this toddler stage is challenging. I often suggest that parents try and approach this time with a lighthearted spirit. I always encourage gentle, playful parenting whenever possible, especially during the young years.

As this school year approaches, I thought I would share some of my plans to have a calm year! This year I have one 7th grader, one 9th grader, two high school seniors, one in Estethecian School and one junior in college. Whew, that is a lot. I will be honest, the first couple of weeks I find myself struggling to get us all on the same page. Between school, jobs, sports, etc… keeping this house running smoothly is a challenge.

Here are some of my tips for surviving back to school:1. Create Dream Posters. 2. Create a Healthy Meal Plan. 3. Follow Through on Healthy Meal Plan. 4. Plan a family night to make dream posters. You will need poster board, markers, magazine, and glue. Invite your children to create a dream poster and display them in your home. 5. Have a Dream Poster Date Night with your partner/spouse. 6. SLEEP… get sleep. Make sure everyone in the home is getting enough sleep. 7. Organize your space and remember less is better. Don’t forget to create a cozy corner for reading books/getting away. 8. Take time to watch and listen. What are your kids talking about, playing with, dreaming of? What pushes their buttons, brings them joy, challenges them? 9. Create a realistic routine that you can live with. Encourage children to stick with routine. 10. Be Flexible – If something isn’t working, don’t be afraid to change it.

July 4th is always a favorite holiday for our family. For the past few years, one of my dearest friends on the planet shows up for coffee, long talks, and sitting by the pool. I always try and record a podcast episode during Ash-a- lee’s visit and was so excited that we were able to chat early this morning about a subject that has been on my heart for a few weeks now.

During some recent outings, I have observed lots of little children that appear “starved” for attention. As I began watching closer, I realized that parents are disengaging with the children and it is happening on a regular basis.

Do any of you feel you disengage too often with your kids? If so, have you noticed a difference in your child’s behavior when you “check-out”? How can we be intentional about engagement so that we help our children become emotionally healthy adults? I get that we need to escape from the burdens of this parenting gig from time to time, but I worry that unless we make a commitment to intentionally engage, we are going to cause damage to our children’s hearts and soul.

Ashley and I suggested the following to help you on this engagement journey:

Keep a basket of books close to the sofa and say YES to reading to your children.
Set a time every day to check social media so that you are not looking on your phone all day long.
Be present.
Participate in family activities (the bowling story).
Ask each child three, open-ended questions every day!

You won’t regret investing in your children’s emotional well -being. Investing when they are young, will pay off during those teen and early adult years.

Ashley and I had a blast hanging out and we decided that we had some thoughts on surviving summer that we wanted to share!1. Have a flexible routine. If you are like me, the strict schedule goes out the window the minute school is out. Well, let’s be honest, I am not a strict schedule kind of mom. However, we do have tighter routines in the school year, especially bedtime. With four teenagers and a tween at home, sleep is often overlooked in our home. I have to encourage my kids to keep on a decent routine or everyone will be walking around like zombies.

Don’t focus on the serious academics during the summer. Take this time to learn a new hobby together, Help your child learn about a topic they have been asking about, read fun books, draw/ paint. Enjoy the FUN in the summer!
Find time for YOU. Summer months are make alone time challenging. However, alone time is very needed for moms taking care of children all day. Hire a sitter, swap off with a friend, ask your hubby to help you… do whatever it takes to get a few minutes to yourself on a regular basis.

Have fun! Give your children (and yourself) permission to discover, explore and have a sense of wonder!!!

10 –Just because I use potty talk does not mean I have to go potty.When I child calls you poopy head, simply say something like, “What? I have poopy on my head. Nope, I don’t think I have poopy on my head.” Children use potty talk to get the attention of others. Once they realize that their words don’t shock you, they won’t use them as often.

9 – Just because I can hold a pencil and spell my name does not mean that I am ready to read and write.If I begin counting in Spanish…. Uno, Dos, Tres, etc…. you might assume I speak Spanish? I don’t. Just as counting in Spanish does not mean I speak Spanish, holding a pencil and spelling their own name, does not mean a child is ready to read and write. Reading predictable books, Reading quality books, asking good questions, journaling, making books, recognizing that words have meanings, inventive writing, scribbling, and manipulatives all help prepare a child for reading when it is time (somewhere between 5-8).

8 –Children need variety when they are outside.Many children need to run, jump, climb, and ride when they are outside. However, some need to be on a blanket with a book or building blocks. Offer them a variety!

7 – There is more to forgiveness than “I’m Sorry!”In the early childhood world, it is often said – “Don’t force a child to say I am sorry.” However, rarely is an option given. How should we handle those hits, ugly words, and moments of anger? The goal is to help children understand that their actions have consequences. What they do impacts other people. When they hit their friend, their friend is hurt. When they say unkind things, their friend is hurt. Children should be encouraged to use their words and express their feelings.

6 – She is not invited to my birthday party.Preschoolers are trying to figure out who they are, what they like, and how to establish boundaries. This is an important time for teachers to help children put their words to their emotions. This is a gift we can give children. We would all say that we want adults that can work out problems and strife in their relationships. This needs to start early. Just like #7, helping children express how harsh words make them feel will them in the long run.

5 – We learn through the process and not the product.It is in the process of discovery, experience, and wonder that children learn. When we focus on an end result, we often miss the actual lesson of the process.

4 – Please listen, we have something to say.We can learn about children’s needs, stresses, developmental areas, etc… if we will take the time to listen to their stories, their pretend play, their questions, etc… If we don’t give them time during the small moments in their life, they will not give us time when the big topics arise.

3-We need to experience to explore a topic.“Being a kid is dirty, messy, noisy work. It is in the experience that we actually understand the topic. Whatever we hope to teach children about, the brain needs to experience through the senses. It is in the touching, smelling, hearing, tasting, and seeing that the brain builds synapses.

2 – We are ALL different.Honor who your child is! Our goal as a parent is to help a child become who they were already meant to be.

1 – MEMORIES will be made!Bottom Line, what do you want children to remember in 5, 10, 15, 20 years? What impact do you want to have on them?

How to Homeschool: Practical Tips and Advice to Launch

Many of you will be traveling with young kids during the holidays. My friend, Ashley will be traveling too. She and I had a great chat today about traveling with young kids and tips for being remembered as a good guest.

Make a phone call to the host family. Ask if you need to bring high chairs/portable cribs/ sleeping bags, etc. Also, ask if any special clothes will be needed for events happening during your visit.
Pack some activities in Ziploc bags for the car ride and trip. Blocks, cars, animals, puzzles, books, crayons, stickers and paper work great!
Discuss with your spouse who will put kids to bed each night so that each of you get some “adult” time on your trip.
Ask for the tentative meal schedule and inform hostess of any scheduling conflicts your family has, so everyone can plan.
Ask before doing. Ask about the house rules (no shoes on carpet, no eating in family room, etc…) and let your kids know these up front. Just because you have certain rules at your house doesn’t mean your host family will have the same rules.
Keep your space picked up. Even if you don’t make your bed at home, it is good manners to make your bed, daily when visiting others.
If children are disruptive, remove them from the situation. Very few children suddenly start behaving again after a big meltdown. Often this is due to lack of sleep and extra sugar during the holidays.
Take your host a small token of appreciation (wine, candle, loaf of bread, etc…) and a handwritten note.
Ask what needs to be done with dirty linens. It is standard etiquette to take sheets off bed, fold them and put them on the end of the bed and remake the bed. However, not every host wants that done. Asking is always best.

10.Leave things better than you found them.

Visiting others does not have to be stressful. Preparation should make things easier on you and your host family.

Special Replay | Creating Inviting Spaces for Your Homeschool for your Little OnesWhen my sweet friend, Misty sent me a Marco Polo (a cool video app) asking my opinion on her child’s playroom, I thought it would be a good idea to share my thoughts with all of you on creating inviting spaces for your little ones!

Everyone is worthy of feeling as if they belong, especially our children and most definitely in their own home. Before you begin designing an inviting space for your children, I suggest you get on your hands and knees and crawl around your home. YEP, literally get on your hands and knees. Spaces look so different from a child’s eye level. Ask yourself, how do things look and feel from that level. Are there enough “small” areas for your children to work, play, discover and explore?

Work, An Element of Inviting Spaces in Your HomeschoolChildren need small ways to contribute to the family. They need work. Create spaces for their belongings on their level. Have a drawer for their cups, plates, utensils, and special cooking items. Have a bucket with basic cleaning supplies and cloths. Place hooks low enough so that children can hang up their own coats. Creating good habits at a young age pay off.

Play, Building Relationships through IdeasChildren are meant to play. How easy is it to say YES to their ideas for play? Less is definitely more in this area. Children do not need 20 containers full of toys in a playroom. During the early years it is likely that everything that is in a container will end up dumped on the floor, all at once. Buy quality toys and items that inspire open-ended play. This is more engaging for the child. I suggest you keep it basic. Some quality blocks, some arts and crafts materials, something that inspires pretend play (dress up, kitchen, baby dolls, etc..) and a cozy corner with books. Put everything else in a large plastic bin and keep it for a month. During that month, move anything your child asks for into a different bin. Whatever is left in the original bin after a month, donate.

Discover and Explore, The Great OutdoorsKids need permission to get outside in search of discovery and exploration. Do you have a space for them to do that? Do you have materials such as nature journals, pencils, binoculars, and bird/flower books to inspire them? Keeping these type of items handy will help you say yes!

Creating inviting spaces is worth the time and effort! Get down on your hands and knees and start crawling around your space today!

We have done some things well, but we have messed up plenty. If you want to have a relationship that promotes open communication, start early and talk often. Some other things we suggested were:

Make time for each child.
Stay in the moment, that means put away your phone.
Don’t be fearful about the BIG talks.
Take advantage of car rides, it is a great place to talk.

You will make a mistake, which is why GRACE exists.
You will feel like your drowning in toddlerhood, know that your investment pays off later.
You are not meant to be friends with your young children, but if you do not invest in them when they are young, you will not be friends as adults.

Teens Speak Up About Everyday Life

My 17-year-old nephew drove over from Alabama to spend the weekend with us. I love having chatting with him and hearing his perspective about life and the struggles that come with being a teenager in 2018. I thought you might enjoy from Alex, as well. My daughter, Sarah was hanging out with us, so I invited her to jump in on the conversation and share her thoughts, as well.

In this episode we talked about the stressors that teenagers have to deal with, both in public school and home school settings. Both Alex and Sarah agreed that time management was super stressful at this age. Next, we chatted about the pressure of Social Media and how to help teenagers navigate the stress caused by likes and follows. Alex and Sarah were willing to be honest about relationships, exposure to drugs, and the pressures to fit in with the crowd.

I know most of you have preschoolers and teenage parenting is still in the future. However, I think this episode will be so beneficial for you because Sarah and Alex share their thoughts on how parenting plays a big role in a teenager’s future. This would be a good episode to listen to with your spouse and make a game plan when the time comes that you have teens in your home.

I am so thankful for teenagers who are willing to talk. Set the stage when they are young that heart to heart talks are good and let your children know that they are loved, no matter what.

As this school year approaches, I thought I would share some of my plans to have a calm year! This year I have one 7th grader, one 9th grader, two high school seniors, one in Estethecian School and one junior in college. Whew, that is a lot. I will be honest, the first couple of weeks I find myself struggling to get us all on the same page. Between school, jobs, sports, etc… keeping this house running smoothly is a challenge.

Here are some of my tips for surviving back to school:

Create Dream Posters.
Create a Healthy Meal Plan.
Follow Through on Healthy Meal Plan.
Plan a family night to make dream posters. You will need poster board, markers, magazine, and glue. Invite your children to create a dream poster and display them in your home.
Have a Dream Poster Date Night with your partner/spouse.
SLEEP… get sleep. Make sure everyone in the home is getting enough sleep.
Organize your space and remember less is better. Don’t forget to create a cozy corner for reading books/getting away.
Take time to watch and listen. What are your kids talking about, playing with, dreaming of? What pushes their buttons, brings them joy, challenges them?
Create a realistic routine that you can live with. Encourage children to stick with routine.
Be Flexible – If something isn’t working, don’t be afraid to change it.

Well, it was the week of July 4th and summer is in full swing. Boat rides at the lake, sun in the fun at the pool, cookouts, and fireworks. What makes those events even more fun is one of your besties coming in town to celebrate with you.

Ashley and I had a blast hanging out and we decided that we had some thoughts on surviving summer that we wanted to share!1. Have a flexible routine. If you are like me, the strict schedule goes out the window the minute school is out. Well, let’s be honest, I am not a strict schedule kind of mom. However, we do have tighter routines in the school year, especially bedtime. With four teenagers and a tween at home, sleep is often overlooked in our home. I have to encourage my kids to keep on a decent routine or everyone will be walking around like zombies.

Don’t focus on the serious academics during the summer. Take this time to learn a new hobby together, Help your child learn about a topic they have been asking about, read fun books, draw/ paint. Enjoy the FUN in the summer!
Find time for YOU. Summer months are make alone time challenging. However, alone time is very needed for moms taking care of children all day. Hire a sitter, swap off with a friend, ask your hubby to help you… do whatever it takes to get a few minutes to yourself on a regular basis.

Have fun! Give your children (and yourself) permission to discover, explore and have a sense of wonder!!!

Can we talk about parenting? July 4th is always a favorite holiday for our family. For the past few years, one of my dearest friends on the planet shows up for coffee, long talks, and sitting by the pool. I always try and record a podcast episode during Ash-a- lee’s visit and was so excited that we were able to chat early this morning about a subject that has been on my heart for a few weeks now.

During some recent outings, I have observed lots of little children that appear “starved” for attention. As I began watching closer, I realized that parents are disengaging with the children and it is happening on a regular basis.

Do any of you feel you disengage too often with your kids? If so, have you noticed a difference in your child’s behavior when you “check-out”? How can we be intentional about engagement so that we help our children become emotionally healthy adults? I get that we need to escape from the burdens of this parenting gig from time to time, but I worry that unless we make a commitment to intentionally engage, we are going to cause damage to our children’s hearts and soul.

Ashley and I suggested the following to help you on this engagement journey:1. Keep a basket of books close to the sofa and say YES to reading to your children. 2. Set a time every day to check social media so that you are not looking on your phone all day long. 3. Be present. 4. Participate in family activities (the bowling story). 5. Ask each child three, open-ended questions every day!

You won’t regret investing in your children’s emotional well -being. Investing when they are young, will pay off during those teen and early adult years.

Would you say that you are self-aware? How does one become self-aware? Does it even matter? On this week’s episode I share my thoughts on this subject and my journey of self-awareness. I fully believe that our past influences our present. Believe me, I don’t have it all figured out and the number one thing I tell everyone is GIVE YOURSELF GRACE. We all need it!

I suggest the following as you look in the mirror:

Be still
Be honest
Be vulnerable
Share your journey with a few people you can trust.
Be willing to learn.

In this episode, Graeme Pitman shares that time does matter in parenting and that quality time requires quantity time. When I watched the video of Graeme and his son Rowan talking about Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, I was thrilled to witness a beautiful conversation where a child was invited to share his honest thoughts and interpretation of the story. One of my favorite posts on Graeme’s Instagram account was that of his daughter belly laughing. I enjoyed imagining the conversation that occurred in their home to cause such a grand laugh. Motherhood is hard. We become parents through pregnancy or adoption, both are hard. Before the baby arrives we are often exhausted physically and emotionally. Next, we stay up all night and are expected to be happy and function the next day. What? How? By digging deep, by realizing that you are making a difference for eternity. It doesn’t mean that it isn’t challenging and very lonely at times.

I suggest the following for moms who struggle believing that they can pull off this thing called motherhood:1. Don’t be scared to ask for help – Reach out to a close friend and share your feelings. 2. Say YES to taking time for yourself. You won’t regret it. You and your family will be happier for it. 3. Say NO often. Motherhood can overwhelm us, especially when we take on too many things outside the home during the early years. 4. It is okay to have your own tantrum from time to time. I suggest going in the closet for a good cry or toddler style fit. 5. Time flies. Try and lean in to these years, savor them. It sounds ridiculous, but you will miss the middle of the night feedings and early morning snuggles on the sofa.

Showing Love After Valentine’s Day is OverValentine’s Day is a fun holiday for me as a mom. I so enjoy getting up early to write my kids love notes, set the table with candles and red, sparkly runners and cook a special breakfast. I want my children to know on this day that they are loved!

Once Valentine’s Day was over, I started questioning my attitude towards the other 364 days of the year. Did I work hard to make sure my kids know they were loved everyday? If so, how do I accomplish that and how do I encourage you to love your kids every February 15th – February 13

I came up with a few things…

Write love notes throughout the year.Be creative. Write on their bathroom mirror with lipstick, leave notes on the pillows, tape notes to the back of the seat where they sit in the car, put notes in their books, in their backpacks, in their lunchboxes. Share specific things you love about them or positive things you have noticed them doing.
Spend TIME with them.I recently saw a news clip about young children and tablet time. The reporter stated that it is fine for young children to be on devices as long as adults were engaged with the children. They showed a video of one child and two adults sitting on a sofa. All three people were on their own device. This is NOT what I am talking about. Real time with your kids means devices are put away. Conversations are happening. Dinner Time, time in the car, while tucking in at night, etc… In order to have a real relationship with anyone, you MUST spend time with him or her.
Honor their work.If your child paints a picture for you, hang it up. If they want to sing you a song, stop what you are doing and listen to it (it usually takes less than two minutes). If they want to read you their story, listen! Honoring their work will teach them that their work matters!
Be careful with your conversations.We have all been guilty of getting on the phone with a girlfriend and firing off. Maybe you were upset with a friend, your partner, or even your child? If you think your child is busy playing and not paying attention, WRONG. They are listening to every word. Decide to share positive things instead… about your friend, your partner, and your child. Words are powerful so choose them carefully.
Create a home that is welcoming for your children and their friends.I am honored when kids say they feel comfortable in my home. I love it when my kids want us to host the party, the bible study, and the special event. I want every one who walks into my home to feel welcomed and relaxed. Hopefully, your children will want to follow your lead and have that kind of home when they grow up and leave the nest.

I am far from perfect as a mom. However, I am confident that my kids will know that I love them and I want them to grow up and love well.

On today’s show I talked about Christmas presents for young learners. Well-meaning adults often focus on the amount of presents under the tree, but this year I want to encourage them (and you) to focus on quality toys and presents instead.

Quality Wooden Blocks – I mention Constructive Playthings on the show and they have great products. Honestly, my favorite are Community Playthings and their website is www.communityplaythings.com Sooo worth the money!
Books – Good books are a must! For little ones, focus on board books with beautiful (real, when possible) pictures. Rhyming books, silly books, read –alouds are great for children, as they get a little older. Check out this link…http://time.com/100-best-childrens-books/
Kits – Create different kits for a great present that will keep your kids engaged. You can decorate plastic containers with lids for easy storage and cute presentation.

Exploration Kit- Nature journal (blank notebook), bird / flower books, pencils, magnifying glass, collection containers, tweezers for collecting bugs and such.

Art Kit- Check out www.discountschoolsupply.com and www.lakeshore.com for quality art products for kids. Paper (large and small sizes), blank canvas’, pencils, paint, brushes, stickers, collage materials, and glue are all great in an art kit.

Bath Kit- Shaving cream, brushes, scrubbers, soaps, squirt toys, and even a new tootbrush.

Baby Doll Kit – baby dolls, blankets, small bucket for bathing, baby wash cloths, baby soap, bottles.

Sensory Kit- slime materials (glue and liquid starch, waterbeads, play-doh ingredients, textured items)

Grocery Store and such – www.ana-white.com has a great plan for a grocery store/flower shop/post office/puppet stage… If you are not a woodworker, fill a small grocery cart with a cash register, a receipt pad, and some empty food boxes. My kids loved this cash register and it can be found from a variety of retailers.
Tent / Space for One – Creating a cozy space for one in your home is of benefit to you and your child. Many retailers have tents that can be purchased. Also include some cozy pillows, a few books, and maybe a small container of manipulatives or even a simple memory game.
Playhouse – Try and find something general enough that children can pretend with people or animals. Check out this treehouse dollhouse from www.landofnod.com.

Also, we’ve been having fun playing but I want to do more read alouds. The only thing is that my youngest is just too noisy. Is that something about discipline or just age? Should I do read alouds when he’s asleep?

I feel like I can keep it together for a couple of weeks – getting up early to get a jump on the day, spending much needed time with the Lord, being patient and sweet with the kids (LOL!), saying yes and playing skillfully, keeping up with laundry and cleanup, cooking meals… by 3rd week I start feeling spent and the laundry starts slipping, I’m inclined to order dinner out every night and my best-laid school plans fall behind. Do you have a strategy for self-refreshment?

This week, the second top podcast episode of all time! Let’s Get Organized!Things don’t always work out as planned, but I have learned that it is usually for a good reason. I hope that is the case with this week’s episode. I was scheduled to talk to my good friend, Mary Ann Kohl (author and process art expert). However, Mary Ann had to cancel so I called up my buddy ASH-A-LEE in Nashville. We decided to chat about one of the topics I get asked about THE MOST, organization.

People often think that because I am the queen of “say yes” and “get messy” I have a very messy house. Not true. Well, it CAN get messy. However, I am best when my house is organized and everything has a place. Just this week, I tweaked the organization of my pantry. See below.

I shared some basic thoughts about organization on today’s episode.

Find a place for everything and make that place known.
Minimize your stuff. If you haven’t used it in a year, chances are you are not going to use it. This goes for clothes, shoes, toys, and kitchen utensils.
Less is BEST. As parents we are guilty of thinking our kids need lots of different toys. False. Choose quality over quantity and rotate toys in and out.
It is easier to say yes when everything has a place (ie – paint supplies, legos, etc…)
Organizing children is easier in an organized space.
Have children work together in order to free of individual time with each child. I love that Ashley sent me the following pics a few hours after our podcast. She immediately implemented some of my suggestions. Way to go Ashley!

Special Replay | Thoughts about my Upcoming GraduateI can’t believe that I have another senior this year (insert tears)! In just a few short weeks, Grace will be graduating high school and pursuing her passions as a makeup artist and esthetician. I am so proud of the young woman she has become. Before she graduates, we are heading on a senior trip (a Caribbean Cruise) this week. As I was thinking about this upcoming trip and her graduation, I started asking myself if I had covered all of the parenting talks. Of course not. How do we EVER share EVERYTHING. I did decide to make a list of some conversations and topics I wanted to have with her this week. I can’t think of another time in her 18 years that we have been alone for this long. We will be together for eight days and I thought I would mention one topic per day.

I honestly did not realize I was doing it until years later, but unfortunately, that doesn’t change the fact that I did it in the first place. She offered me a pair of shoes similar to the ones in the picture below and I refused them because “my daughter was not allowed to wear heels.” Yep, I said that. Nope, I am not proud. Yep, it was mommy shaming.

Once I looked back, I realized that I was often mommy-shamed in those early years. I would proudly state my opinion about holistic medicine, homeschooling, etc.… not realizing that just my tone about the subject could be harming another mom.

Mothering is a mystery. Mothering is challenging. At times mothering is flat-out overwhelming. Most of us are insecure of our decisions, especially early on. I think many of us “yell” out our opinion as a cry for affirmation. Unfortunately, our opinions are often seen as mommy shaming.

If you think you might be guilty of being an unaware mommy shamer, here are my suggestions:1. Recognize why you mommy shame. 2. Recognize when you mommy shame. 3. Strive to be quietly confident, only sharing STRONG opinions among your inner circle.

Mommy shaming divides. We need each other. Let’s spend our time respecting each other, encouraging each other, and loving each other.

Levi and Titus rocked all of our worlds, especially hers. Caroline gets real and vulnerable as she shares her journey of expectations vs reality. I think many moms can relate to Caroline’s story and can empathize with everything she shared. Caroline shares openly about her many experiences with children leading up to motherhood and the fact that even then, she had no idea what it was like to be fully responsible for a newborn life (or lives in her case).

Caroline encouraged moms to give themselves grace, focus on the present, and enjoy the time when they are small. We also talked about the importance of other moms walking alongside new moms, not just expecting moms. New moms get lonely and tired and could use a visit from a friend to cheer them up in those early days. I mentioned my favorite gift from a lady in our church was when she offered to come and hold my new baby so I could take an uninterrupted nap. That was heavenly!!!

Mothering is a Marathon with Keri VasekIt had been a while since I had Keri on the show. Actually, it had been a while since Keri and I had talked in real life. It was good to catch up with her and hear what was on her heart. Keri took a few minutes to catch us up on her home and family. She has been a busy lady since we last chatted. Next, Keri asked about my suggestions for sibling disagreements. I admit that I don’t know all the answers to this one, but I did have a few thoughts and suggestions to teach children to be kind to one another.

Keri and I spent a good amount of time talking about a statement I often make during my speaking engagements, “Mothering is a marathon.” I do say that a lot. It is a long, tough journey that has ups and downs… highs and lows. It will test us, require patience, and definitely demand endurance. It will be worth it. It is worth it.

Moms with little ones often have chaos, and unruly children and can be found in yoga pants and a messy bun. Keri and I share some of the unrealistic expectations we had early on as moms and agree that keeping it simple is best.

I loved Keri’s 3 REALISTIC expectations for each day.1. Find time to read aloud.

Invite your children to play.
Be intentional about loving one another.

Let’s EXPECT good things from our kids and from ourselves. My goal is that my children grow up to know they are loved, so that they feel free to give love to others.

Christy and I have had many talks with all of our kids over the years and thought you guys might benefit from hearing from us on this topic. We have done some things well, but we have messed up plenty. If you want to have a relationship that promotes open communication, start early and talk often. Some other things we suggested were:

Make time for each child.
Stay in the moment, that means put away your phone.
Don’t be fearful about the BIG talks.
Take advantage of car rides, it is a great place to talk.

You will make a mistake, which is why GRACE exists.
You will feel like your drowning in toddlerhood, know that your investment pays off later.
You are not meant to be friends with your young children, but if you do not invest in them when they are young, you will not be friends as adults.
Find a friend you trust and encourage each other through this mothering gig.

How to Homeschool: Practical Tips and Advice to Launch

As many of you know, I am getting ready to host some lovely women in my home next weekend. My goal is for these ladies to feel at home from the moment they drive up. A recent FB post in our THGP- Playing Skillfully in Action group got me thinking about genuine hospitality. What makes a good hostess? I thought I would share some of the things I do to make our home a welcoming place to others.

Know your guests. Do they have any food/environmental allergies? Do they feel anxious about traveling? Do they have trouble climbing stairs?
Prepare the space (fresh sheets, water by the bed, flowers, and travel-size toiletries).
Have snacks easily accessible. Most people don’t feel comfortable asking for a snack**Funny story about my snack basket pictured above. Recently, a friend’s son asked his mom why I was so mean. When asked for an explanation, he said only a mean mom would make their kids pay for snacks. I guess he didn’t get my joke.
Have a fan/diffuser in the room.
If your guests stay in a kid’s room, make sure the bed/nightstand is cleared of the stuff that can be collected in those places (stuffed animals, treasures, etc.).
Most importantly, have a welcoming attitude. You can have all the right things and have guests not feel comfortable or you can have a house that is a wreck, an empty fridge, and have guests that can’t wait to come back. So much of genuine hospitality is the attitude of the hostess.

Can I say an encouraging word about hospitality here?
I’m unsure if this would be considered an inappropriate post, as it is not really curriculum-related, so feel free to delete it.

But I just wanted to share a recent experience I had because let’s be honest, we’re all moms, and we all struggle with thinking our homes/ourselves are not “good enough” at times. Especially when we have preschoolers and are trying to “say yes” more!

My husband’s father remarried a woman from Mexico. This weekend we spent time at her brother and sister in laws house. The house was small, crowded, and cluttered. Don’t get me wrong, it was clean, but nothing like what most of us would consider nice or ready to entertain. There was nothing fancy about the food, just rice, and beans in mismatched pots on the stove, random plates of veggies on the very crowded table (which was in the small kitchen with mismatched chairs all around), a grill full of food and mismatched plates and silverware that everyone had to search the cupboards for. The host herself spoke broken English and was slightly awkward and very shy. She didn’t serve us and didn’t bustle around, making sure everything was perfect while we were there. She just sat, ate, tried her best to understand what we were saying, and quietly washed dishes afterward.

But I say all this to say I have never felt so at ease, so welcome, so like family in a strange place. All of my mother in laws family from Mexico has a way of just treating you like family. They don’t prepare the house (other than bringing out all the chairs from every room). They don’t cook anything special. They don’t even set out plates or forks, usually! But they are genuinely glad you are there, warm and friendly, and truly see everyone they invite into their home as a family and welcome.

I wanted to share this because I often want to reach out but don’t feel my home (or my own social skills!) are good enough. I worry about my kid’s attitudes and messes. But maybe, we try too hard and treat guests too differently to make them feel at home. Maybe if we could leave out the kid’s toys and let them be themselves (and let ourselves be ourselves!), and just welcome guests in as a family, our homes would feel even more hospitable!

If you are like me, you are freaking out a little that Thanksgiving is in two weeks. Yep, two weeks until the Turkey, Dressing, and Pumpkin Pie. I decided to chat about the rapidly approaching holidays and some of the pitfalls that moms face this time of year.

Ashley Pomerory (formerly known as Ashley Smoot), my buddy from Nashville joined me today and asked some thought-provoking questions about Thanksgiving and Christmas. First, Ashley wanted to know my thoughts on slowing down the Christmas Rush. Both of us have witnessed neighbors and friends skipping over Thanksgiving in order to get a jump on the Christmas decorations. I really want to encourage parents to slow it down when it comes to Christmas. Please take the time to be thankful to your family. Make a thankful jar, a thankful tree, or simply share why you are thankful over the holiday meal. Teaching children to be thankful is a tough task and this is a great time of year to put some family focus on this important lesson.

If you are not careful, Christmas can be like a massive hurricane wrecking your life. You can overbook and under the plan, which will leave you completely exhausted come January 1st. I suggest making a list of priorities and traditions that are important to you during the holiday season. Don’t overcommit, and definitely learn to say NO. Practice it now, N…. O…. NO! You can do it. It is a powerful word to use if you want to maintain your sanity this Christmas.

I often get asked how to handle spiritual training with little ones. I believe spiritual lessons should be like every other lesson at this age, taught in a concrete manner. I often suggest parents start with the Fruit of the Spirit when helping little ones understand God and His world. In this podcast, I share practical ways to teach the following lessons:

Love

Patience

Kindness

Goodness

Faithfulness

Gentleness

Self-Control

As you have probably heard before, behavior is caught and taught. Your children will learn so much about the Fruits of the Spirit from watching YOU. Do you love others (I have an entire podcast on this subject)? Are you Joyful? Kind? Good? Faithful? Gentle? Patient? Self-Controlled? I know that I can work on these areas in my life. Each year I choose a WORD for the year. Maybe you choose a Fruit of the Spirit each year to focus on with your family. Being intentional about the Fruits of the Spirit could make a very big difference in the spiritual life of your family.

I often get asked how to deal with NO and MINE in toddler world. I see them both as positive words for this age. Toddlers are realizing that they are indeed human and separate from their parents. Isn’t what we hope all of our children realize! Up until this point someone has made all the decisions for them and they FINALLY have a voice. NO, they don’t want peas for dinner. NO, they don’t want to take a bath. NO, they don’t want to go to bed. I bet some toddlers are sooooo excited that they can finally state their opinion. ON this episode, we will talk about this world of toddlers and the many reasons that no and mine are their favorite words. It really is a good thing.

Also in this episode, I will quickly address some other toddler topics… potty training, biting, and pitching fits. I know for many parents, this toddler stage is challenging. I often suggest that parents try and approach this time with a lighthearted spirit. I always encourage gentle, playful parenting whenever possible, especially during the young years.

Special Replay of The Real Kathy Lee: When my sweet friend, Misty sent me a Marco Polo (a cool video app) asking my opinion on her child’s playroom, I thought it would be a good idea to share my thoughts with all of you on creating inviting spaces for your little ones!

Everyone is worthy of feeling as if they belong, especially our children and most definitely in their own home. Before you begin designing an inviting space for your children, I suggest you get on your hands and knees and crawl around your home. YEP, literally get on your hands and knees. Spaces look so different from a child’s eye level. Ask yourself, how do things look and feel from that level. Are there enough “small” areas for your children to work, play, discover and explore?

Work – Children need small ways to contribute to the family. They need work. Create spaces for their belongings on their level. Have a drawer for their cups, plates, utensils, and special cooking items. Have a bucket with basic cleaning supplies and cloths. Place hooks low enough so that children can hang up their own coats. Creating good habits at a young age pay off.
Play – Children are meant to play. How easy is it to say YES to their ideas for play? Less is definitely more in this area. Children do not need 20 containers full of toys in a playroom. During the early years it is likely that everything that is in a container will end up dumped on the floor, all at once. Buy quality toys and items that inspire open-ended play. This is more engaging for the child. I suggest you keep it basic. Some quality blocks, some arts and crafts materials, something that inspires pretend play (dress up, kitchen, baby dolls, etc..) and a cozy corner with books. Put everything else in a large plastic bin and keep it for a month. During that month, move anything your child asks for into a different bin. Whatever is left in the original bin after a month, donate.
Discover and Explore- Kids need permission to get outside in search of discovery and exploration. Do you have a space for them to do that? Do you have materials such as nature journals, pencils, binoculars, and bird/flower books to inspire them? Keeping these type of items handy will help you say yes!

Creating inviting spaces is worth the time and effort! Get down on your hands and knees and start crawling around your space today!

Jamie, Arlene, and I had so much fun recording our podcast for last week, we decided to keep the party going and record a second one. At every conference people ask us how we homeschool children across the ages. We figured it might be something the podcast world would want us to talk about as well, so we did.

Every homeschooling family is unique. Some people homeschool year round, some 3 days a week, some 8-12 everyday. It is hard to tell others exactly HOW to homeschool, but we all agreed on the following for those homeschooling different ages at the same time.

Find the rhythm for YOUR family, don’t compare.
Make sure your youngest gets some quality time by creating an engaging environment for them.
Partner children up to work together. For example, while you are working with the middle child, have the oldest and youngest work together. While you work with the oldest, have the middle and youngest work together, etc…
Don’t be afraid to seek the help of tutors, enroll some children in a hybrid, or partner up with other homeschooling families to meet the needs of your children.
Take advantage of early mornings and naptime. Be willing to change your schedule and remember this is just a season. Flexibility is KEY.
