Whenever I travel, I feel forever changed by the emotional signature of a place. From the crazy busy train stations to an unexpected lesson I learned from a tween in a picturesque garden in Kyoto, to a luxury jewelry store selling $40k pieces alongside plastic balls, to the harrowing stories of the A-bomb in Hiroshima, this episode takes a bird’s eye view of Japan through my experience and enumerates 5 lessons I’m applying to my creativity + biz so you can use ‘em to skyrocket your creativity too!

Everyone has to deal with clothes every day. Lately, when I show up for Zoom, people are surprised that I’m dressed + ready. But I like to show up for my life because it’s happening NOW, not when my 4 kids are older, not when I “have somewhere to go.”

In this episode I defend getting dressed as an access point to becoming the person + creator you long to be.

In this episode:

  • How I used getting dressed to tune into the version of myself I want to be
  • How getting dressed will directly boost your creativity (and lends some unexpected bonuses too)
  • Using the science of getting dressed to support your creative goals

In this episode, I walk you through a few of the lessons I've learned along the way plus how it's shaped the way I do business now.

What happens when your creations involve not only inanimate objects like paints or flowers, but HUMANS too? You need to be a diva who's uncompromising in her vision, but you also need to collaborate. In this episode we talk about the two kinds of things in the world, how humans can be both, and which category we're best served within. Boredom is almost extinct in our modern lives and we’re paying the price in our creative work. If you’re bored with your creative output, the ironic cure might be actively seeking out boredom, white space, and wandering. But HOW can we include these when we have to get.stuff.done? And when does wandering become just avoiding our creative work and giving into resistance? In this episode you’ll learn: -why giving yourself breaks + white space isn’t just a luxury but is absolutely necessary -why your relationship with time is messed up + how to fix it so you can enjoy the entire process more (in life and art) -the easy-peasy baby step to take now to get more boredom + white space into your life -how wandering aimlessly can amp up your creativity (just ask creative big shots like Walt Whitman, Henry David Thoreau, Aristotle, and Beethoven) Mentions: https://time.com/5480002/benefits-of-boredom/ https://qz.com/1020976/the-scientific-link-between-boredom-and-creativity/ Wander society book: https://www.amazon.com/Wander-Society-Keri-Smith/dp/0143108360 Small move, big change book: https://www.amazon.com/Small-Move-Big-Change-Microresolutions/dp/0670015342 The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks: https://www.amazon.com/Big-Leap-Conquer-Hidden-Level/dp/0061735361/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2B8IRZE4N3FGH&keywords=the+big+leap+by+gay+hendricks&qid=1568229959&s=books&sprefix=big+leap+gay%2Cstripbooks%2C209&sr=1-1 Get More from Brooke: Free class for Family Photographers to Find Your Style: https://brookebschultz.com/findyourphotographystylenow

The creative process is often painted as eternal bloom; we see only the polished, finished work in carefully curated highlight reels in an endless scroll. But the incubation and quiet that has to accumulate over a seed before the bloom is just as vital to its growth as the vibrant blossoming.

Often, in talking to creators, they say things in winter like, “I’m burnt out”, “I don’t know what I’m doing anymore” “All my photos are crap” or “I’m just not inspired or motivated.” These experiences can feel like a crisis, a shameful problem that requires us to do more and urgently fix, fix, fix.

If you have periods of bleakness, of darkness, there’s nothing wrong with you. We often forget that there is no light without darkness, no bloom without black, rich soil and the bare, gray-brown limbs. Darkness is the contrast that gives light its meaning and magnificence.

The difference between work that feels lackluster and work that excites the audience and moves them? Curation.

Whether you’re a photographer, musician, writer or whatever your creative medium is, this episode is all about the art of storytelling and taking your audience on a journey through your choices.

The order in which you present your work, the juxtaposition you create in your work through the sequence or the sizing or the contrast from one work to the next – let’s talk about curation.

Creators tend to grossly overestimate what’s required to run a successful business. Your fear is boring, but friend, you are not. Fear always says the same thing: What will people think? Who do you think you are? What if it's terrible? What if you fail?

This episode is a continuation of a series of love letters to creatives at different stages of your creative lives.

In today's episode, we'll walk through the place of fear in the creative life, what those fearful thoughts can sound like, what you can think instead, and when to push through fear or listen to it.

If you find yourself starting that creative venture you’re excited about, then dropping it when other things come up or you realize how bad you are, I have two words for you: me too.

This is a letter to the one who keeps stopping and starting. The one with conflicting desires like me, to build an empire and rule the world, and also to lean into the softness of the earth, the squishiness of my heart and my body, and explore the quiet depths of my interior life without anyone else knowing about it.

This love letter is the first of a series of letters speaking to different places you might be on your creative journey. Coming up: The One Who Hasn’t Started Yet, The One Who’s Burnt Out, The One Who is Bored, and more.

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • How to start over on an individual creation (the right way)

  • How starting over on a big project or abandoning an idea is the key to long term clarity

The mundane can be flattening, don'tcha think?

I've been thinking about being tired vs. being uninspired, because a lot of times I will go into a creative process and feel tired, and have lots of other things weighing on my mind.

But once I'm there, I feel on fire, and in flow, time and space collapse.

I'm having so much fun, I'm challenged but I'm also up to the challenge. I'm dancing in that magic space between mastery and mystery.

In today's episode, we'll explore the tension between creativity and the mundane.

When we prioritize inspiration in our lives, we can trust the process a little better and move our creative work forward. Shortening the creative cycle so that we can find a spark and follow it up with action.

Writing is sovereignty. When we wrap language around our experiences, we get juiced with power. So why do we have so much resistance? Should we aim to change the world with our creative work? How can you make a living as an artist without giving yourself over to what other people want? A creative life consists of an array of moving parts, and we can often get lost in the weeds and forget the VERY most important thing in creativity. It’s deceptively simple: do the work. Make the creations. CREATE.

And yet, there are so many ways we mess this up and get it wrong.

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • the most common traps that hold creators back from doing the work
  • hidden dangers that keep creators in ruts, stuck, and lead ‘em to burnout
  • surprising places to cut the fat so you increase your capacity to make more work

Creativity is a sensitive biz to be in. Sometimes we expect too much of ourselves and expect this insane amount of unrealistically fab output and the truth is we are human and also often sensitive as artists and sometimes you just feel off–and yet, it’s not always practical to cancel everything when you feel this way, so what can you do? Walk through with gentle awareness. Today’s meditation will help you do just that.

Description:

Every time I ask what you’re struggling with related to your creativity, confidence comes up. But WHY do we need confidence? Sure, it can be helpful, but when it’s elusive, a lot of creators have shame about their lack of confidence- which just creates a bigger downward spiral. When you sign up for a creative life, you’re signing up for a rollercoaster of emotions, but the reward on the other side far outweighs the humiliation, fear, or failure: you get alignment, a sense of contribution and wholeness, a beautiful flow knowing you are giving your gifts away and being used for something greater than yourself. Tune in for stories of unexpected ways to build your confidence and what to focus on instead when you can’t bring yourself to believe in yourself.

Multi passionate creators are some of the most tortured artists I’ve ever met– they never seem to be at peace with what they are doing, because they always have in the back of their minds the other creative lives they want to be living.

They worry that their disparate interests are a hindrance to their success, and they are concerned that if they integrate all their passions into their business or creative practice, they’re gonna confuse people and be too scattered to make any headway in any one niche.

But I propose that multi passionate creators have some of the juiciest world-changing potential, because they are able to integrate different mediums and interests into a narrative that moves people in a way that singular creators can’t. This episode includes a lot of behind the scenes details of my own multi passionate business, how I approach my interests, how I make money from them, which ones I choose to make money from, and how to incorporate all your interests into your business, if you want to. It’s so much closer than you think.

Anytime people buy anything, they’re buying a feeling. Wanting to quit happens to every creator. The tricky bit: sometimes it means something, and sometimes it doesn’t. We are obsessed with the idea that we should pick one dream or goal as early as possible and stick with it. We believe there will be incremental progress related to our hard work. But so many success stories aren’t like that - they are a million ‘wrong turns’ seemingly unrelated ventures, and then one that explodes, one moment that it all comes together.

In this episode, I walk you through resilience and grit, and the importance of knowing the difference as a creative.

Pep talks for 3 listeners: how to have confidence in new ventures + balance creative growth with showing up as a mom (Ep 186)

Takeaways:

  1. growing in business + creativity doesn't have to be at odds with showing up as the mom and wife you want to be.

  2. you have to believe you can’t afford NOT to pursue your dreams simultaneously with your other pursuits and relationships

  3. action creates confidence, not the other way around. You don't need confidence in your abilities, you only need confidence in your own resilience.

  4. Take your new big visions to the people on a slower, more specific timeline than you think.

HEARTFUL is a free digital magazine for family photographers that highlights images with soul. by photographers interested in telling honest stories that are deeper than pretty.

Get inspired to make your best imagery yet. Submit your work!

https://heartful.brookebschultz.com/contact

Family photography has traditionally been the lowest rung on the photography ladder. Not as cool as wedding, fashion, or commercial photography, family photographers have been relegated to little more than button pushers serving the masses.

This reflects the patriarchal structure that runs on the unpaid, unseen labor  of parents - especially mothers. Society cannot value what it cannot see.

We rage against this machine by witnessing + spotlighting the holy work of parenthood and family life through art.

I also learned a surprising truth from launching the magazine that I'm sharing in this quick episode! It applies no matter what medium you create in. THANK YOU for being here!

In today's episode, we chat all about regression, plus the less rigid approach on daily habits. Top 6 Takeaways:1) when you feel you've regressed, it might not be a regression at all but a recalibration to your truest values. 2) the more all-or-nothing thinking we have, the more likely it is we’ll go to ‘nothing’ - the surest way to kill any momentum.3) believe your best creative work is yet to come! 4) we are not robots on an upward-only trajectory in the creative journey. 5) your practice is hugely beneficial to others, do it on stage where we can see you. 6) switch up the context in which you share or show up for your creative work, you’ll get noticed more and be able to make a much larger impact than circling the drains of your own niche. As always, there are tons of resources to check out at www.brookebschultz.com, see you there!

WHY should you bother to make things? If it doesn't make any money, have an audience, or save the world, isn't it just a waste of time?

"Unused creativity is not benign. It metastasizes. It turns into grief, rage, judgement, sorrow, shame.” “There’s no such thing as creative people, and non-creative people. There are only people who use their creativity and people who don’t. Unused creativity doesn’t just disappear. It lives within us until it’s expressed, neglected to death, or suffocated by resentment and fear.”

We are MADE to create life, energy, change. “Creation brings deep satisfaction and fulfillment. We develop ourselves and others when we take unorganized matter into our hands and mold it into something of beauty.” -Dieter Uchtdorf

What if you’re not the “creative” type? Chances are if you’re listening to this, you are, but you might have people in your life who claim that they’re not creative but are actually LYING because creativity is a human skill, not just reserved for artist, makers, or musicians. This week we're bringing back episode ONE for a refresh for those times when you feel like giving up.

Have you been a human being? Then you’ve probably experienced heartbreak, grief, and disappointment! this episode will help you bring more intentionality and soften those edges with not only your creative practice itself but with the meaning making and peace that can come from coloring these experiences w intention instead of just reaction. This episode is very personal and hitting close to home because I’m experiencing a heartbreak that feels super devastating to me, even if I feel like from the outside it shouldn’t be as big a deal to me as it is. I had to end a friendship, partially because of my own mistakes. And so when we talk about living a wildly creative life, you know I include everything in that, and a huge part of this is intentionality. So if you have experienced grief or a big disappointment or failure or made a mistake that you regret, In these experiences it often feels like we don’t have control (and yes control is an illusion ha!) but these ideas will help you feel a healthy sense of autonomy over your experience esp if you’re a deep feeler who tends to get lost in an experience like heartbreak or disappointment.

Most meditations either focus on the “now” with contentment and presence, or the future, with visualization. This meditation does both and is the one I use most often in my own meditation practice, plus it has some rad science that shows how it increases creativity on a brain wave level!

This meditation is a riff on Vishen Lakhiani’s 6 phase meditation. I first learned about this from his book the code of the extraordinary mind, which I highly recommend, it’s such a good read.

Thanks for your enthusiasm on the reboot, you all sent in your wins and I'm super excited to share and shout you out at the end of the episode!

Let's talk about how to plug into the upward spiral of creativity! Bc lots of you right now think that creativity TAKES from your life–its one more thing to put on your self-care list that you’re not doing, it’s one more thing that requires time and energy from you. But when you are plugged into creativity you see how much of an upward spiral it is–that it gives you back soo much more than it takes. The more you use the more you have. The more you have the more you want to give away. The more you use the more you want to impact and be generous and contribute to your circles small and worldwide. The more you align w your gifts the more you feel jazzed to wake up every day and express them explore them and give them away. The more you create the easier it is to create, across mediums, and the benefits bleed into your life, you inhabit the world in a different way, you interact w your family in a different way, it’s like you know a big secret that nobody else knows and you can walk through your day w this energy and zest and excitement and curiosity and purpose and contribution. What are we even doing if we think that’s somehow not essential?? We spend our days buying things, trying things, trying to spend time w certain ppl who we think will give us these feelings. All we want is these feelings, right. So I’m here to tell you being creative is the thing that’s gonna get you these feels in a long term sustainable way and not just when your thing is DONE and finished, but all along the beautiful way that’s paved with people to meet and experiences to have and wow aha moments and divine downloads and inspiration. I have a friend who is super talented but isn't expressing her gifts bc she feels like she doesn't exactly know what she wants to do, she’s also a busy mom, she’s struggled w mental health, and I see the light in her dimming, and every time I interact w her I want to do a slightly screamy pep talk bc I see how much other ppl would be impacted by her particular flavor and blend of talents and I see so clearly that it really doesn't matter where she starts, what medium she uses, what business it is in the beginning, bc the starting is the most important part.

So that’s what we’re gonna get into today, how to plug into this, bc it’s here, it’s available, creativity is waiting and BEGGING you to dance and play and collab w it, so how do we plug in, esp when there’s so many other things on our plates?

But first have you grabbed my six hacks for skyrocketing creativity–get on this list bc when I send out the coolest thing that I’m in the process of making which is free btw you will be the first to know via email and if you're anything like me, podcasts are the thing you do while you’re driving, dishes, laundry, etc. so get on the email list and you’ll be notified of these goodies when you’re in a place to take action on them.

This is probably my ultimate thesis with the podcast, it's so fun to try to synthesize 153 episodes for you. Whether you're in a creative career, creative hobby, or just think, I'm not actually creative but I’d like to get in better touch with that part of myself...don’t worry about it being good; worry about creativity being good FOR you! Especially in the beginning, especially when you’re feeling burnt out and want to quit, especially when you're in the comparison trap, especially when you just feel not good enough. Use your creativity as therapy, release, expression, meaning making. Make it good for you.

I've been thinking about being tired vs. being uninspired, because a lot of times I will go into a creative process and feel tired, have lots of other things weighing on my mind. When we have huge dreams + creative ideas that are big enough to truly change the world, self doubt is par for the course.

Does self doubt hold us back from our best creations or fuel us toward them? In this episode we explore what the head kidnapping negotiator from the FBI can teach us about dealing with self doubt, why we need self doubt to tell interesting stories (that make people connect to our creations!), and how to blend self doubt + self confidence into your creative process to keep it spicy.

It's been awhile since I've done a meditation episode! This week, I want to give you a meditation for when you feel like you suck, when you feel like you blew it creatively, when you’re sure you're never going to make it. Just to gently walk through that experience with you, not to pull you out of it, but in THAT moment, to hold space with you. We'll be doing a lot of visualization. This episode will be one you should bookmark and come back to whenever you need it again!

So thrilled to have one of my heroes, Jamie Kern Lima, the founder of IT cosmetics, on the podcast today. She started in her living room and grew to the largest luxury makeup brand in the country. She sold the company to L’Oréal in a billion-dollar deal and became the first female CEO of a brand in its 100+ year history. Eventually that landed her on the Forbes America’s Richest Self-Made Women list. She’s the author of the new book Believe IT: How to Go From Underestimated to Unstoppable, an instant bestseller. She went from being a Denny’s waitress to selling her company for a billion dollars, she’s changed the beauty industry dramatically by showing not perfect models but women of all ages, sizes, skin tones, skin types. She’s mission-driven and what she's created is incredible but her message for all of you creators is the most incredible gift.

In this episode: -how Jamie went from hearing no for 3 straight years to selling her company for 1 billion dollars by doing this one thing

-how women dim their lights + how to step into your power around money (this was my favorite part!)

-how to handle well-meaning friends and family who don’t get what you’re trying to create

I’ve been hiding again. I’m practicing not doing that. I find I want to show up only if I’m not tired, irritable, depressed or indecisive. I only want to come to a space with wisdom, presence, power, poise, inspiration to offer. And those are all good things and all things I am and can be. Maybe even a lot of the time. Are you your own worst critic? Sometimes we think being hard on ourselves motivates us + pushes us to be better, but science is showing that the opposite is true--we HAVE to be kind to ourselves if we want to make our best work. Self compassion might sound like another fluffy woo-woo practice to add to your plate, but it’s proven to increase your creativity and doesn’t have to take any extra time. Kim Beecher is a mindfulness teacher (and she’s also my MOM!) here to help you be less depressed, more productive, more joyful, and more creative through self compassion.

In this episode: -what even is self compassion and why should creative people caaare?

-the real way to quiet the inner critic + be nicer to yourself

This week we’re going behind the scenes with a few of my love soaked mastermind peeps about how they broke through their upper limits and made huge changes in their art, biz and life through the experience of the retreat + mastermind. If you’ve gone to a retreat/workshop, and If it was good, you likely felt awesome during the workshop, super inspired, excited, ready to take everything and apply it to your next shoot. But then, what happened after, when you got home? Were you able to really apply all of it? That's what I thought. That’s why I created the retreat + mastermind together, so that you can make huge changes in your art, business (and life, wink!)

In this episode: -why a retreat by itself isn't enough to transform your work

The allure of creations we haven’t yet made can distract us from the most important thing which is MAKING the thing. People often wonder why they aren't making when they have all these great ideas floating around or sitting in a doc on their computer but the biggest reason why you're not making isn’t because you don't have time, or enough experience, or enough money, or the right tools, or you haven't found the right location to shoot your project or been able to take the trip to research your book. You're not bringing your great ideas to life because great ideas are perfect in your limitless imagination. You see how incredible it COULD be. But actually doing it? It’s crappy. It’s hard. It’s not what you see in your head.

In this episode: -the biggest reason you’re not making what you wanna make

-how to deal with sucking at something you REALLY care about

-how to make your creativity into a game (that you just want to keep playing!)

I'm BAack from maternity leave with new nuggets to infuse into your creativity! If every day feels the same + you’re feeling uninspired, let's start a club, yah? Ha.

Having nothing to look forward to breeds hopelessness. Hopelessness is a hallmark of depression + apathy, and creativity is born out of a zest for life, a sense of vitality--NO one wants to create when they’re feeling apathetic. Quarantine + covid have got a lot of us feeling like there's nothing to look forward to, which feeds the apathy/lack of inspo monster.

Let's explore two flavors of something to look forward to so you can breathe new life into your creativity!

In this episode:

-how looking forward to something can help curb your need for instant gratification (+ achieve bigger goals!)

-2 kinds of things to infuse into your life so you always have something to look forward to

-the secret to eliminating ‘what should i be doing’ energy + fully enjoying your time (so you create more) I drop this at the very end of the episode

Can't wait to hear what you think--share with me on instagram @brookebschultz.

Sustainability sounds terribly unsexy, but:

When you operate unsustainably in your life and creativity, you're actually robbing your future self of leaving a creative legacy.

And it's not fair.

It's not fair to that future self, it's not fair to the creations that are meant to come through you, and it's not fair to the people you are meant to impact and serve with your creativity.

(Did I get on a soapbox fast enough today? ha.)

Whether it's your pricing, the time you're spending on social media or your expectations, let's uproot the sneaky unsustainability that creeps in.

In this episode: -leaving a creative legacy without sacrificing everything else in your life

If you feel like you haven’t created much of anything lately—this meditation shines a spotlight on the things you don’t even know you’ve created and are constantly creating. The goal of living a wildly creative life is not just to hole yourself up with your craft for as many hours as possible or see how many awards and accolades you can rack up to somehow prove your creativity; it is to expand it far past your formal creativity and approach each aspect of your life with ingenuity, intention, and playfulness.

From your daily life to your relationships, discover how you already bring the hallmarks of creativity, and how tuning into these as creative practices can increase your capacity for them without any extra effort or need to ‘try.’

To be human is to write. We never look at a baby and say, “I wonder if she’ll be a talker.” we just assume she will, because talking is such a part of human experience, and yet we’ve somehow decided that writing is an elite activity reserved for a special few. In this episode I share why we want to perfect everything we create and how to let good be good enough (plus why that's better than trying to make creations that are beyond reproach). And nope, this isn't advice to simply lower your standards and get sloppy. I also share two key takeaways to help you let go of perfectionism in your creative work (and maybe your life too, boo!)
