Consumers are realizing ‘what’s good for the planet is good for me,’ and adjusting their consumption patterns accordingly; sustainability is a requirement for ‘healthy’ products.

This holistic view of sustainability means companies have an opportunity to embed sustainability into every aspect of their products—from ideation and sourcing through go-to-market strategy and messaging. Understanding which aspects of sustainability resonate most strongly with consumers can ensure brands are mindful of their footprint on the planet, and can ensure products meet the demands of a changing marketplace. In this podcast, Julie Johnson of HealthFocus International explores consumer attitudes and actions towards the environment and sustainability, and what to expect across the globe in the healthy products marketplace.

Tune in to hear more about:

  • Why the global omega-3 market is ripe for change, and the potential positives on the climate.
  • How companies can assess their full lifecycle impact to determine their sustainability footprint.
  • Inspirational concepts around the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and opportunities for firms to align their business strategy for a net positive result.
  • Consumer engagement strategies and the broad appeal of omega-3s to all ages.

While the health benefits of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids are increasingly recognised, the challenges posed by sourcing exclusively from fish are also on the radar, opening up opportunities for innovation. In fact, these long-chain omega-3s come to the fish themselves via algae, which has prompted great interest over years in how algal production could be optimised to deliver these beneficial health ingredients in a more sustainable way. Over the past five years, Vaxa has worked to take advantage of power from the Hellisheidi Power Station in Iceland to power a unique, closed-loop, controlled aquaculture facility. The indoor growth platform uses machine learning technology for controlled, scaleable, fresh microalgae production. This summer, Vaxa launched a consumer products division—Örlo Nutrition; the name is derived from a unique combination of Icelandic words: Örlog meaning ‘fate’ (fortune, destiny) and Ör derived from ‘micro.’ In this podcast, Corrina Bellizzi shares more about Vaxa’s journey, the sustainability story, and the potential for growth in this market. Tune in to hear more about:  Why the global omega-3 market is ripe for change, and the potential positives on the climate. How companies can assess their full lifecycle impact to determine their sustainability footprint. Inspirational concepts around the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and opportunities for firms to align their business strategy for a net positive result. Defining sustainability across the sports nutrition sector means considering issues from upcycling and human rights into packaging and inspiration in research. Consumers across the globe are taking more of an interest in a healthy and active lifestyle, often fuelled by the use of sports nutrition products. How this aligns to the concurrent growth in sustainability and transparent sourcing is a critical issue for the sports nutrition industry to grow long-term. The European Specialist Sports Nutrition Alliance (ESSNA) is the voice of the responsible sports nutrition sector in Europe, and recently rolled out its ‘Lifting the Planet’ sustainability pledge. Encompassing commitments around clean energy transition, circular packaging, sustainable ingredient sourcing, and much more, the move solidifies ESSNA’s desire to accelerate the industry’s transition to sustainability. In this podcast, Terence O’Rorke, business development manager at LGC Assure and a vice chair of ESSNA, speaks to the role of sustainability in the sports and active nutrition industry, and the opportunities that lie ahead. Tune in to hear more about: Steps that the sports nutrition industry is taking to reduce its environmental footprint. Upcycling is a new term highlighting the ability to make the most of surplus food waste; Alvinesa has been on this path for decades, and is accelerating its efforts. Upcycling allows firms to make the most of surplus waste, such as food waste, to incrementally add value to the supply chain. While it’s not a new concept, the term itself has taken on greater resonance in recent years as companies seek to make the most of every part of their base ingredients. From a family-owned company founded in 1948 to ‘upcycle’ spent waste of the wine making process, Alvinesa has developed into a firm devoted to exploring how to develop high value nutraceutical ingredients. In partnership with its new investors Intermedial Capital Group, and with new CEO Jordi Ferre on board, Alvinesa is extending its geographic and market reach. In this podcast, Ferre speaks to the opportunities around upcycling and the circular economy, the importance of increasing geographic reach, and how companies can extend their own journeys around sustainability. Tune in to hear more about: The concept of upcycling and opportunities to make the most of agro-waste. How using natural extraction processes can optimize ingredient positioning. Increased acquisition and geo-extension plans for Alvinesa. Inspiration for greater sustainability creativity.

Developing new solutions to support performance and address inflammation can mean going beyond ‘popular’ ingredients into unique offerings.  While there is a great amount of consumer and market interest in cannabidiol (CBD), there remain market and regulatory constraints, as well as questions on its efficacy for addressing certain conditions. However, there are other ingredient options that may be better suited for addressing issues such as recovery, pain, sleep, and immune health. Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) is one such ingredient that has scientifically supported efficacy in these areas, and may serve as an alternative to CBD. Gencor Pacific offers https://www.gencorpacific.com/ingredients/levagen (Levagen®+,) a bioavailable PEA powered by LipiSperse® technology. In this podcast, sponsored by Gencor Pacific, you’ll hear more about:  The legal, safety and efficacy challenges of CBD How the endocannabinoid system functions and its benefits Functional impacts of PEA and its similarity to CBD Benefits of https://www.gencorpacific.com/ingredients/levagen (Levagen®+) over standard PEA

Companies seeking to do business in the fast-growing food supplement market in the United States must ensure they’re compliant with federal regs. Since the mid-1990s, the United States has been on the cutting edge of dietary and food supplement innovation, following the passage of legislation that carved out a regulatory category as a sub-set of food. Bolstered by consumer interest in preventive health, the industry has seen steady growth even in the face of questions about the level of FDA oversight of the supplement category. One of the fundamental pieces of supplement regulation is good manufacturing practices—GMPs—that are a requirement for bringing compliant products to market. In this podcast, Dr Tara Lin Couch, senior director for dietary supplements and tobacco services at EAS Consulting, shares insights around FDA’s supplement GMPs, common misconceptions, and much more. Tune in to hear more about: Shifts in the US dietary supplement landscape in the last two years, and what the ‘new normal’ looks like. Ways for overseas firms to stay abreast on the regulations impacting their business in the United States. The latest regulatory changes affecting food and dietary supplement production. How companies that market finished supplements can ensure their producers are compliant with GMPs.

While it is common to measure age chronologically, research is establishing that biological age is a better marker to determine the length of ones healthspan. This is because our biological age can be influenced by many components including genetics, lifestyle, and disease. A https://www.aging-us.com/article/203736/text (recent study) published in Aging (DOI: https://doi.org/10.18632/aging.203736 (https://doi.org/10.18632/aging.203736)) demonstrated that Rejuvant, a timed-release CaAKG (calcium alpha-ketoglutarate) with vitamins, is a potential life-extending formulation. After seven months of use, Rejuvant decreased the biological age of participants by an average of eight years, in the TruAge DNA methylation test. Brian K. Kennedy, Ph.D., one of the lead authors of the study noted that the results suggest that Rejuvant is an intriguing candidate to affect human aging and that the results are encouraging for increasing health span in both men and women. Tune in to hear about:  How Rejuvant supports healthy ageing What frequency and dosage provides the most benefit? Which demographics respond best to healthy ageing supplementation Strategies to extend health span

While Europe has been a challenging market for probiotics marketing and claims, shifts at the European Commission level may open up new opportunities. While probiotics sales are growing in most countries around the globe, Europe has seen a less robust uptake, constrained perhaps by a regulatory environment that disallows most claims for probiotic products on pack and in marketing. However, there may be positive news on the horizon for companies seeking to communicate the health benefits of their probiotic-containing products. In this podcast, David Pineda Ereño, founder of DPE International Consulting and a consultant to the International Probiotics Association (IPA), shares his take on the possible shifts that could happen at a European level, as well the positive changes already taking place in markets such as Italy and the Czech Republic. Tune in to hear more about: How the current landscape is constraining growth for probiotics products in Europe. The potential for finished product companies to communicate the health benefits of probiotic products to consumers. Entrepreneurial spirit meets global barley domination in EverGrain’s move to marry upcycling and functional food ingredients One of the first cultivated grains of the Fertile Crescent, barley has been used for millennia in foods and beverages, from breads and animal feed to malt and beer. Today, while it is one of the most common grains cultivated globally, it doesn’t have the same high profile in the food ingredients space as others, a challenge that EverGrain is now tackling. Officially introduced in 2020 after a multi-year investment by AB InBev, EverGrain is looking at new ways to create unique plant-based ingredients from barley, with a commitment to sustainability through upcycling. In this podcast, Jacqueline Hochreiter, global director of strategy and sustainability with EverGrain, delves into the organization’s path to market, including the entrepreneurial spirit of the founding team and their desire to make barley ‘cool’ again. Tune in to hear more about: Defining ‘upcycling’ and its ability to shape a more sustainable future for the food and nutraceutical industry. Why an investment in not only technology but intellectual property is important to secure the future of unique functional ingredients. Awareness of the gut-immune connection, desire for alternative delivery systems—gummies!—and confronting supply chain challenges impacted the nutraceutical industry in the past year. While the pandemic wreaked havoc throughout the year, the nutraceuticals industry realized tremendous growth and investment. Consumers and the media explored the importance of boosting baseline nutritional status, while product formulators sought new ways to deliver efficacious levels of ingredients through new delivery formats. Even the supply chain challenges spoke to the global desire for natural products and underscored the importance of transparency in production and sourcing. In this year-end wrap-up, Heather Granato, vice president of content at Vitafoods, looks back on some of the top issues that impacted the nutraceuticals community in 2021, with added context from industry experts. Tune in to hear more about: Shifts in approaches to work and in-person gatherings Interest in active nutrition and general wellness Immune health and a move away from ‘boosting’ Gut health and the microbiome

IADSA’s launch of guiding principles on sustainability for the supplement sector offer opportunities for collaboration throughout the supply chain Sustainability is a term on everyone’s lips—from consumers and brands to governments and suppliers. The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals are a collection of 17 interlinked global goals designed to achieve a more sustainable future by 2030. Identifying which goals align best with any given business or industry can be a challenge; however, the International Alliance of Dietary/Food Supplement Associations (IADSA), has tackled the issue with the release of https://www.iadsa.org/sustainability-principles (Guiding Principles on Sustainability) for the Supplement Sector. The new principles are an extension of IADSA’s Code of Ethical Principles, taking the call for businesses to integrate sustainability practices into their organisation and offering more specific tactical guidance for the full supplement supply chain. Simon Pettman, IADSA’s executive director, joined the Vitafoods Insights sustainability podcast to dig into the why behind this new initiative. Tune in to hear more about: Defining the term ‘sustainability’ in a global market Opportunities for associations, companies and regulators to collaborate How companies in different parts of the supply chain can take proactive steps to address sustainability in their operations Why the topic of claims is a cornerstone for sustainability and transparency

Even as consumption of carob is growing globally, orchards are shrinking, leading CarobWay’s founder to seek a new and more sustainable model. Carob—once known as a 70s replacement for chocolate—has come into its own, with consumption growing at 5 percent a year. However, orchards are shrinking and there is an increasing shortage of quality ingredients in the market. This has opened up a whitespace not only for supply, but to do so in a new and more sustainable way. Udi Alroy, CEO and co-founder of https://www.carobway.com/ (CarobWay), has taken up the challenge to develop carob intensive cultivation orchards and to produce ingredients using 100% of the carob fruit—from seeds through pods. With decades of experience in the global food and nutraceutical industry, and a passion for supply chain transparency and sustainability, Udi has identified cultivars that produce well in arid climates, and yield abundant ingredients. Tune in to hear more about: Market opportunities for carob—both for food and beverage products and nutraceuticals. How utilising all parts of the carob fruit yields unique new ingredients. Why an eco-supportive model based on long-term partnerships has overt and underlying benefits to business. Inspiration to make greater sustainability commitments across the supply chain.

Consumers are looking for unique ways to address stress and enhance focus; however, Clutch Cognition developed its ‘solution’ from the science, not market whitespace, route. In an increasingly digital and connected world, consumers are constantly plugged in and engaged. While this has boosted connectivity, in many cases, it has also led to challenges in keeping focus and raised stress levels. At the same time, there is a greater awareness of the potential of nutrition to enhance whole body wellness—body and mind. What could a solution look like that took the best of ingredient science and delivered it in a convenient format? Rune Rønhave Laursen, the CEO and founder of Clutch Cognition, sought to put this connection into action. After working for more than a decade in nutrition and biotechnology, he was intrigued by myriad ingredients with benefits to cognitive wellness that had solid scientific substantiation. Over several years, he put his ‘biohacking’ expertise to work to yield a new solution. Tune in to hear more about: Why grounding product development in science, not just consumer interest, yields a solution with a longer-tail opportunity. The type of ingredients fuelling Clutch Cognition, and the potential for synergistic effects. Market reaction and global interest in solutions for focus and mental wellness. Regulations impacting probiotic ingredients and finished products vary across geos and categories, but IPA is on the case. Probiotics continue to draw attention worldwide, with an estimated one in four adults consuming probiotics in the last six months, according to a new survey conducted by Kerry. In fact, the online survey results showed nearly half (49%) of respondents in China had used such a product, followed by 42% of respondents in Mexico. And just as usage rates differ, the way these products are regulated varies by market. The International Probiotics Association (IPA) aims to promote the safe and efficacious use of probiotics throughout the world, and is recognized as the unified ‘Global Voice of Probiotics.’ Its executive director, George Paraskevakos, speaks globally around the opportunities for the sector, including connecting directly with regulators around the world to ensure these products have clear paths to market. IPA recently released the Global Regulatory Manuscript, detailing how probiotics are currently regulated, and potential changes ahead. Young company, TINY Technologies, has cracked the code on optimised systems that address bioavailability challenges for notoriously tricky ingredients. Ingredient and food supplement manufacturers are often challenged with the low bioavailability nature of a number of different ingredients—which usually have relayed effect on the dosage, side effects, delivery, efficacy, and even compatibility with other ingredients in finished products. In fact, approximately 40-50% of ingredients within the supplement market are fat-soluble and suffer from low bioavailability. It’s not uncommon to see supplement brands advising additional dosing of a supplement to improve levels of intake, but often this causes unpleasant side effects for the end user, which can also turn out to be harmful to health.  Tune into this podcast with Tobias Meller, CEO at https://tiny-technologies.com/ (TINY Technologies), to hear more about:  The challenges when formulating ingredients with low bioavailability  The mechanisms of active ingredient absorption in the body  Leveraging technology to produce small particles with high stability and optimised active ingredients Exploring an emulsifier-modifying system for optimised ingredient use in capsules

Importantly, gut health impacts general well-being, fighting pathogenesis of many chronic conditions and bolstering the first lines of defense from outside invaders.

The Vitafoods Virtual Summit, taking place 15 to 17 September, includes three deep-dives into key industry areas. On Tuesday 15 September, the session “Transforming Gut Health: Immune support, synbiotics and future opportunities,” sponsored by Nexira, will directly focus on the interconnection between digestive health and immune function, and the key role of nutrition. Among the featured speakers is Caroline Childs, BSc (Hons) PhD RNutr, lecturer in Nutritional Sciences at the University of Southampton. Dr Childs’ research to date has investigated nutrients including dietary fatty acids, probiotics, and prebiotics.

In this podcast, Dr Childs and Informa’s Heather Granato discuss: • The critical nature of supporting a healthy microbiome in immune function and its connection to whole-body wellness. • Some of the most important lifestyle and health considerations for consumers seeking to bolster their gut health. • Specific ingredients with an important role to play in fostering digestive wellness and immune health.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, consumers have been seeking natural ways to bolster their immune systems, whether through basic diet and lifestyle to the use of nutraceuticals and food supplements. Whether this is a not-so-seasonal sales spike similar to that seen in cold and flu season or a long-term change in behavior is still unknown; however, companies have an opportunity to offer unique products with responsible marketing and claims to make the new behaviour stick.

In this podcast, Mike Hughes, head of research and insight at FMCG Gurus, and Informa’s Heather Granato discuss: • How the consumer mindset is shifting from a strict focus on immune function into the connection of whole-body wellness. • Whether the shift toward improved diets and use of supplements is sustainable—and what companies need to do to ensure continued market growth. • Regulatory and marketing considerations related to immune health that could boost or hamper growth across the broader supplement and functional food market.

While there is wider consumer interest in health and nutrition on the back of the COVID-19 pandemic, shifting behaviour means particular markets, products and brands are doing well—but not all companies are in the same position, especially as we see consumers going back to brands that are familiar to them. Charlotte Bastiaanse, associate editor at Vitafoods Insights, and James Tonkin, founder and president of Healthy Brand Builders, discuss CPG brand survival. In this deep-dive podcast, we cover economic impact to established versus emerging brands, the state of industry investment, reforming business structure and models to come out on the other side in good standing, and the future of in-store and online retail.

The global nutraceutical and broader wellness industry has a reputation for being mindful of its impact on health, the environment and social change. However, for many brands, packaging is a later consideration during the product development process; packaging is critical to product safety and integrity, but there are many options that could fit the bill. Looking holistically at the packaging—from its alignment with the brand promise to investing in sustainable packaging for the long-term benefits to the ecosystem—means making active choices from the start of any project. In this Vitafoods Insights podcast, Kate Bailey, policy and research director at Eco-Cycle (ecocycle.org), offers thoughts for CPG brands to consider around packaging, including design, recyclability and more. Eco-Cycle is one of the largest non-profit recycling and Zero Waste organizations in the United States with an international reputation as a pioneer and innovator in resource conservation.

In this podcast, Bailey and Informa’s Heather Granato discuss:

• Consumers’ growing awareness of and interest in packaging solutions that are better for the environment, whether via recyclability, materials selection or Zero Waste options. • Issues that manufacturers are facing when making materials choices for packaging. • Opportunities to consider packaging from a whole-life or circular perspective.

While COVID-19 has reignited interest in overall health and wellbeing—or reinforced for already-conscious consumers—it’s not as easy as we think to meet nutritional needs through food alone. While majority of the population is also adjusting to a home-based lifestyle, when the world inevitably returns to a new version of normal, we may see many stumble back into unhealthy daily routines.

Through the years and presence in many markets worldwide, we have seen time and time again, that nutraceuticals stability is more of a bonus, than a standard, says PharmaLinea chairman & founder, Blaž Gorjup. To classify a product as stable, it must proven that ingredients stated on the label are also present in those very quantities at the end of the shelf life, ready to deliver the promised benefit to the consumer. In reality, in independent consumer tests performed by organisations such as Consumerlab.com, up to 40% of tested products failed. The primary reason being products containing less of the main ingredient than it was claimed on the label. Charlotte Bastiaanse, associate editor at Vitafoods Insights, and Blaž Gorjup talk through stability challenges and where the wheels of change are already in motion.

We are at the most critical moment in the history of our planet, as man-made changes to the climate threaten our security on Earth. But there is a technology for massive planetary geo-engineering that is tried and tested and available right now. As Diana Martin and Dr Andrew Smith from the Rodale Institute explain, this solution is farming. Specifically, regenerative organic agriculture which could sequester more than 100 percent of current annual CO2 emissions. They’re not joking! Regenerative organic agriculture works to maximise carbon fixation while minimising the loss of that carbon once returned to the soil, effectively reversing the greenhouse effect. Plus, there’s a decent ROI here: consumer demand for organic is as strong as ever and sustainable practices are increasingly important. The Rodale Institute has a full white paper to download on their website here. Climate change is a huge concern to every industry and this is a down-to-earth solution to global warming—in a time of climate uncertainty, we can be sure there is something we can do to make a difference.

With the myriad forms of information available to consumers nowadays, it can be difficult to parse through the noise and find ‘the truth in nutrition’. Misinformation, in particular, seems to be in abundance these days, as we see consumers becoming more interested in their health and swamped by the sheer volume of information out there. Heather Granato, VP Content at the Global Health and Nutrition Network, joins us live at Vitafoods Europe 2018 to discuss the issue of responsibility in communication and how the ultimate aim is to help consumers reach optimum health.

The nutraceutical industry is a strange place for a business to operate in some ways; the convergence of medicine, food and technology creates a battleground in which food and pharma companies compete for dominance of the sector. Food companies have strong expertise in large-scale manufacturing and global logistics that reach into the mass market, but their research expertise is lacking compared to the pharmaceuticals industry. At the same time, the two markets are presumed to focus on different things: it can be said nutra focuses on wellness, while pharma deals with illness. However, it certainly seems the distinction between the two is starting to blur; recorded live at Vitafoods Europe 2018, Pierre-Albert Thomas, Global Technical Director, Rousselot, joins us to agree and discuss the business potential for pharma companies looking at nutra models, and the future of the nutraceuticals industry. An often-overlooked concern for pregnancy and healthy ageing, hyperhomocysteinemia can affect infant development, cognitive health and heart health. Homocysteine is a sulphur-containing amino acid generated from methionine, which is essential. The plasmatic concentration of homocysteine is the result of a strong connection between a person’s dietary habits and their genetic factors, meaning while the percentage of the population at risk is small, it’s crucial to get tested for homocysteine levels if a person is trying to get pregnant or at risk of heart disease. Elevated levels negatively influence many bodily functions, as explained by Giorgio Amadori, Inpha2000, at Vitafoods Europe 2018.
