You’ll learn:

  • The surprising reason your “crazy” puppy might just need a nap
  • How structure and routine create a calmer, more cooperative dog

Whether you’re managing everyday chaos with a brand-new puppy or simply need a back-to-basics reset, this episode will help you be more proactive, more intentional, and more confident in your training.

What if the secret to better training isn’t more control—but more choice?

In this episode, we explore one of the most powerful shifts in modern dog training: giving dogs agency. Choice-based training is transforming how we teach, focusing on collaboration instead of compliance. From cues like “go sniff” to intentional break times and consent-based handling, we’ll unpack how small moments of choice create big breakthroughs in learning.

You’ll discover why dogs who are given options often learn faster, retain behaviors longer, and build deeper trust with their humans. We’ll talk about how offering choice reduces stress, increases engagement, and strengthens the relationship at the heart of training.

Because when dogs have choices, they don’t just perform—they participate. And that changes everything.

In this episode, Amy explains how to use fear-free handling, desensitization, and consent cues to help your dog feel calm and confident during grooming, ear cleaning, nail trims, and vet visits. You’ll learn how to turn stressful routines into trust-building moments that strengthen your bond.

By the end, you’ll know how to give your dog choice, control, and comfort — and set the stage for a lifetime of stress-free care.

🧠 Key Takeaways:

  • Teach a consent cue, such as a chin rest, to give your dog a voice in care sessions.
  • Keep training sessions short, calm, and reward-based.
  • Partner with your vet or groomer for fear-free experiences your dog can trust.

✂️ Practical Tips Covered:

  • How to introduce nail clippers, brushes, and ear solution gradually
  • Using treats to pair touch with positive experiences

  • Setting your dog up for success before vet visits

Every puppy parent faces the same challenge: balancing freedom with safety. That delicate dance between letting your puppy explore their world while protecting them (and your home) from potential disasters. What if there was a simple solution that creates harmony for both you and your growing puppy?

Playpens are the unsung heroes of puppy raising. Far from being a "cage" or prison, a properly introduced playpen serves as your puppy's personal apartment - their safe haven where they can relax, play with appropriate toys, and learn crucial life skills. As trainers Amy Jensen and Amanda explain, this management tool creates the perfect environment for your puppy to thrive while preventing unwanted behaviors from developing in the first place.

Have you ever noticed your dog jumping on you, then quickly told them to sit and rewarded them with a treat? You might be inadvertently teaching them that jumping is the first step in getting what they want.

On the Puppy Training Podcast, dog trainer and therapist Amanda Crosland introduces us to the jump-sit-treat theory—a fascinating insight into how dogs learn patterns and how we often accidentally reinforce the very behaviors we're trying to eliminate. Dogs don't analyze our intentions; they simply recognize cause and effect. When jumping consistently leads to interaction followed by rewards, the jumping behavior becomes cemented as part of their successful strategy.

The solution lies in becoming proactive rather than reactive trainers. By anticipating situations where your dog might display unwanted behaviors and preemptively redirecting them, you can break these cycles. Amanda draws compelling parallels between these canine learning patterns and similar cycles in human behavior—like how we procrastinate, panic, succeed, and then repeat the pattern because the reward reinforced the entire sequence.

Perhaps most importantly, Amanda reminds us that dogs are emotional mirrors, reflecting our energy and states back to us. "If we're anxious, they get anxious. If we're calm, they settle into calm." This insight shifts the training focus from simple obedience to a deeper understanding of emotional regulation and mindfulness from both ends of the leash.

Do you have one dog who devours anything while another turns their nose up at perfectly good food? You're not alone in this frustrating mealtime dance.

Picky eating in dogs stems from multiple sources—medical issues like dental pain or food allergies, behavioral patterns from inconsistent feeding, or simply learned behaviors when we constantly offer alternatives to refused meals. Doodle owners will nod knowingly, as these breeds seem particularly prone to food selectivity.

The good news? Simple management techniques can transform your feeding routine. Establishing consistent mealtimes where uneaten food disappears after 15-20 minutes helps reset expectations. Creating separate feeding spaces eliminates competition between your vacuum-cleaner dog and your discerning diner. And contrary to popular belief, constantly switching foods often makes pickiness worse, not better—a stable, veterinarian-approved diet with occasional subtle enhancements like food seasonings typically works best.

For those struggling with multi-dog households, structure is your friend. Monitor who's eating what, use puzzle feeders to make mealtime mentally engaging, and remember that adult dogs naturally eat less frequently than puppies. With patience and consistency, you can create harmony at mealtime that meets each dog's needs without the daily struggle. Ready to transform your feeding routine? These practical strategies will help both you and your canine companions enjoy mealtimes again.

Today, we will explore the topic of loose leash walking and how to transition your dog from working in a confined space to going on destination walks. Loose leash walking is an essential skill that all dogs should learn, as it allows them to walk calmly beside their handlers without pulling or tugging on the leash.

When it comes to transitioning from working in a confined area to walking on the sidewalk, it's important to assess your dog's readiness. Some signs that your dog may be ready to walk on the sidewalk include their ability to walk calmly on a leash in a confined area, their willingness to follow your cues, and their length of attention span. Patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement are key to successfully transitioning your dog to this new environment.

In this episode, I share my experience with a client's new puppy, and we explore the importance of fostering good check-ins from our furry friends. Plus, discover how to start putting the recall on cue with multiple syllables and a happy tone.

But how do we reward our puppies for good behavior? In this episode, we'll dive into the significance of understanding your dog and creating a strong bond based on positivity and trust. Find out how to vary the rewards to keep your pup entertained and motivated, and why it's essential not to overdo training exercises. We'll also discuss practicing recalls using a long line for adolescent puppies or older dogs you're just getting to know. But, his wife Abby argues that the counter surfing is getting a little old now that Neptune is 7 and they have 3 young children who love to leave their plates unattended. This past week, someone asked me about the puppy blues. They recently brought home a new puppy and are feeling overwhelmed, tired and concerned if they made the right choice to bring a dog into their life. They had the “What have I done?” feeling happening and wanted to know what to do next? Do these blues go away? If so, how long does it take? How can I change this and get back to the me I used to know? I thought owning a dog was supposed to help me emotionally, but all I feel is stress.

I know this person is not alone in their feelings - it is common for someone to get a puppy, be super excited about it and then a few days or weeks into feel the puppy blues. Yes puppies are cute, funny and do offer emotional support, they are also a lot of work, especially in the beginning, which can leave one feeling tired, stressed and or overwhelmed. Your responsibilities have increased and it seems your personal freedom has decreased. This absolutely can lead to some less than happy feelings towards your new bundle of fluff!

So let’s talk about the puppy blues today! Can you relate?

Does your dog ever see something or someone when you are out walking and they go bonkers? Do they lose their mind and try to pull or lunge towards the other person or dog? Today I want to touch on the topic of prevention and management and how it fits into our training. To start, I’m going to tell you about my niece. When she was two she LOVED to color. In fact, it was known in our family to put all crayons and markers away when she was coming to visit. Why would we do that?

Well, if we didn’t and she happened to find one, she was happy to color on anything in sight - yep! Laptops, couches, walls, you name it. She had no filter when it came to coloring. So a simple fix was to make sure all coloring materials were safely put away before she arrived. This is prevention and management at it’s finest and that is the topic of the day.

Today’s topic is something that comes up a lot as my team and I help a LOT of new dog owners.

Let’s say, you’re getting a puppy soon. You are driving several hours away to pick up your puppy which means you’ll have a long drive home with the puppy in the car. What should you bring? How can you help the puppy enjoy the trip? What about potty breaks? I will address these questions on the podcast today.

Others of you I know are flying on a plane with your brand new puppy. What should you expect on the flight? What should you bring with you? How will the puppy handle the trip? I want to address these questions as well. Today is all about travelling with your dog. I’m also going to share a few general tips for travel as the weather warms up in many areas.

Today I want to finish our conversation on the ABC’s of dog training. We’ve applied this model to barking and jumping. Today I want to apply it to puppy biting and mouthing. Hopefully this concept is starting to become second nature to you as you work with your dogs to change behavior.

Today we are using the ABC model to address jumping and next time we will use the same model to talk about puppy biting & mouthing. I’m hoping by giving concrete examples in each of these areas, we will all be better able to apply the concepts in the model on a regular basis to help our dogs choose better behavior.

In this episode, learn how to change your dog's jumping behavior, whether they jump on people, the sofa or counter surf.

Do any of you have a dog who barks? Do they bark at something outside the window? When they see another dog? To get your attention? Some bark when playing - a happy bark! There are many reasons why a dog may bark. Some barking I’m okay with - happy barking - to a point. While other barking is not something I want to become a habit.

As a review for today’s topic - Check out Episode #56 How To Solve Any Dog Training Problem. If you’ve already listened to it, you’ll recognize the ABC’s of dog training. This formula is very useful to change any behavior our dog may exhibit.

Today I want to apply this model to barking.

The only way your puppy knows to play when they first come to your home is how they played with their littermates. If you've ever watched puppies play you know they pounce on each other, bite paws, tails, ears and maybe even growl or bark. It is important from day one to start teaching your puppy to play with toys. This alone will prevent much of the initial puppy biting and mouthing that can occur.

In thinking about this week’s podcast, I decided to mix it up a bit and throw out a few training challenges for us to accomplish in the coming weeks.

With many people spending more time at home, here are a few basic training challenges we encounter on a daily basis for you and your puppy to complete. Really challenge yourself and your puppy to see what level can my puppy achieve?

I would love to see videos of things you and your puppy accomplish, even the novice successes as that is where we ALL begin! Let’s support each other as we work on common tasks! Feel free to share your videos to our facebook page - @theonlinepuppyschool.

Here we go… There are seven tasks - feel free to create your own as well. While we may be limited in social interactions and places we can visit with our dogs, there is plenty to fine tune within the walls of our own homes. Here are some ideas:

  1. Puppy waits while you place the food bowl on the floor and doesn’t move to eat until released. How long can they wait? (See Lesson 1.9)
    1. Novice - 1-5 seconds
    2. Advanced Beginner - 6-20 seconds
    3. Intermediate - 60 seconds
    4. Skillful - Multiple Minutes
    5. Expert - I’m not moving until released!
  2. Pawsfit Game - Only If You’re Nice (I & 2)
    1. Novice - Hold food in a closed hand
    2. Advanced Beginner - Hold food in an open hand
    3. Intermediate - Place food on the floor - cover with hand as needed
    4. Skillful - Bounce food around on floor
    5. Expert - Use steak or other HIGH value food reward at the skillful level
  3. Puppy remaining in a sit stay while you put the leash on and again when you take the leash off
    1. See Lessons 1.8 & 2.4
  4. Attention Walking - See Lesson 2.8
    1. Novice - Puppy watches you for 1-4 steps
    2. Advanced Beginner - Puppy watches you for 5-9 steps
    3. Intermediate - Puppy watches you for 10-20 steps
    4. Skillful - Puppy walks by your side (not ahead of you) for over 20 steps, checking in every few steps
    5. Expert - Puppy walks by your side for over 20 steps, turns right, turns left and sits when you stop.
  5. Create your own shaping activity - What can you get your puppy to do?
    1. Paw a balloon
    2. Sit in a box
    3. Go through a tunnel
    4. Etc. Be creative & share your ideas!
  6. Down stay while you open the door and invite a guest in (See Lessons 2.3 & 2.4)
    1. Novice - handler stands right next to puppy and feeds food rewards for position
    2. Advanced Beginner - handler stands right next to puppy and occasionally drops rewards
    3. Intermediate - handler stands 5 feet or more away from puppy - still tosses rewards
    4. Skillful - handler answers door - still tosses food rewards
    5. Expert - handler answers door - puppy gets reward after being released.
  7. Puppy goes to their bed on cue. (See Lesson 2.11)
    1. Novice - Lure puppy onto bed and release puppy right away
    2. Advanced Beginner - Lure puppy onto bed, wait at least 10 seconds, then release
    3. Intermediate - Cue puppy to go to bed with no food in hand, release after 20 seconds

This occurs when a new pet owner transitions the puppy out of the breeder's home into their own, initially not knowing what to do, not understanding why it's important and deciding to wait and see if it's really necessary, subsequently only choosing to seek professional help in the way of classes after their puppy begins causing problems, already has not-so-ideal behaviors and is entering the challenges of adolescence! There is a critical socialization period for all puppies from 3 to 16 weeks old. Once this window closes, the effects are permanent for the life of your dog. It is so important to introduce your puppy to as many new people, animals, places, sights, sounds and smells as you safely can before that time ends. Make sure you are smart about where you take your unvaccinated puppy. Do not go to places where other dogs frequently roam. But do take your puppy out, carrying him or her as needed and help them have positive experiences with the world. If your puppy acts fearful, do NOT force them to investigate the scary something or someone. Instead, move on to something else and make a note to revisit that item on a later date.
