This week we polled our discord for their “hot takes” on things in the TTRPG world. This could be anything from system design, acceptance of rules, homebrew, anything at all. And we were delighted by the number of responses we received. Sara and I are thrilled to go through each and everyone one, and either stand fast with you or plunge a dagger of detest in your opinions cold dead heart. After all “we have a microphone and you don’t”.

In all seriousness, we support and encourage our community opinions and ideas. Everyone’s table and storytelling style is different. So come listen to how the other half lives, plays, and their “hot takes”

TTRPGs often have their own lexicon of terms we need to learn to engage with the game, with terms like “THAC0” and “Benny” to describe the mechanics. The in-game world can often have unique terms as well, with “Netrunners sporting some preem chrome” instead of “Hackers with excellent cyberware” This week, Sara & Rob discuss the unique lingo tossed around at the table, and how to use it to make games more immersive, while still being accessible.

Special Note: This show had some audio issues, the opening is a bit different due to this. We are sorry.

After 5 years of system spotlights, Sara and Rob have seen a ton of different settings and themes for games. But this just opened the door to focused themes and ideas that they have never seen, but probably exist somewhere. This week they will talk about systems, themes, and styles that they would like to see in the TTRPG space and perhaps some mechanics that can bring them to life!

Some game sessions land differently than others, whether you tried to tell a horror story and your players felt it wasn't fun, or your "big reveal" catches players off-guard, seen as a gaff rather than a brilliant twist. Oftentimes, the emotional impact, enjoyment, and interaction with a game can be a matter of mismanaged expectations - the story you told was different from what the players wanted or expected. This week, Sara & Rob discuss managing player expectations, and how it can greatly affect the enjoyment of your game.

Not all villains are inherently evil for the reason of evil. It's possible to have them misunderstood, confused, and or caught between loyalty and honor. Maybe you have a player asking to play an "evil" character. Maybe your "chaotic neutral" is "chaotic lunatic" or your group's paladin is the ubiquitous "lawful stupid." Alignments can be good indicators of a character’s moral compass, but are often terrible guides for HOW to roleplay them. This week, Sara & Rob look at some common misconceptions about alignments, character motivations, and roleplay.

Death is the end of a story, in most cases. Unless it's a direct mechanic in a story it can feel like “the end” for players as well. When you present a different option, other than death, to a critical or dramatic moment it gives the player the option to keep the story going. But is this a trick or does it cheapen the experience or make the challenges feel less threatening? Tonight, Rob and Sara will be discussing what “consequences” can do to change the threat of death and bring about more exciting and dramatic shifts in stories and why it might make the game better.

Most TTRPG’s come with a setting and framework like fantasy, sci fi or pulp. But tend to be lighter on how the game should feel when it comes to the players and their interactions to that world. Those are often an unwritten contract between players and the storyteller, all too often undecided till well into the game. This can be confusing and upsetting if people don’t mix on how the game should go. We use terms like “Murder hobo’s” and “magical friendships” as ways to describe the feel of the party and its interaction with the world. Tonight, Rob and Sara shift away from the systems, mechanics, and storytelling elements and get to the heart of the story experience as they discuss the Feel in RPGs.

When telling an RPG story there are many places to start, and the ending doesn’t have to be far, but the focus is important. In 2009, Wyrd Publishing produced the world of Malifaux, both a city-state and a world in a parallel dimension. This world was created in 1787 after our own world was threatened by the decline of magic, and magicians looking for a new source of magic discovered a world separated from ours by a thin barrier. Each RPG has a feel and tone when it comes to how its rules play into the way the story is told. D&D, White Wolf, 7th Sea, and Mouse Guard all have very different takes on what a challenge is, how you can overcome it, and what the results are to the story. Some of these systems focus heavily on the narrative, and allow for a broad interpretation of how the rules play out, whereas others strive to describe in detail the interactions and consequences of each action. There are a number of ways a TTRPG game can go sideways. Perhaps the players killed your main villain in Session 1. Perhaps your players are fighting, and cannot be civil at the table together. Perhaps you believed every contingency was covered in your game preparations, but the players chose the one option you DIDN’T think of. This week, Sara & Rob discuss how to recover from the unexpected twists and turns - both in-character and out-of-character - that can make our games feel “ruined.”

One of the best aspects of roleplaying is that we can experience, in some small way, things that may be outside of our grasp. Usually, that means fantasy or sci-fi stories, like battling dragons, delving into ancient crypts, or fighting mega-corporations with our cyber-enhanced bodies. For some, though, roleplay can be an excellent tool to explore ourselves and our psyches as well. Perhaps there is a traumatic experience you wish to confront in the safety of a roleplaying game where no harm can come to you. Perhaps you are questioning if you are LGBTQ+ and feel safe exploring that question among friends with a fictional character, to see how that experience feels. This week, Sara and Rob discuss the concept of using roleplaying as a way to explore the human experience in a relatively safe environment.

Storyteller Conclave is 2 years old! It seems like only yesterday we were sitting together in a coffee shop, talking for hours about storytelling techniques, and only half-joking about starting a talk show of some sort. We’ve moved out of the original studio, and weathered (currently weathering?) a pandemic. Even through all that, we’ve managed to produce a show a week for over 100 episodes! Join Sara and Rob as they look back on the last 2 years, where they’ve been, and where they might be headed in the future!

During this pandemic, many of us are turning to digital tools to continue telling our stories, and the use of digital maps has exploded! There are many great map-making tools available, but using them can be intimidating for those who lack artistic talent. Well, great news! Map making doesn’t require artistic talent! This episode, Sara and Rob discuss the map making tools that are available, and how ANY storyteller can best use those tools to make amazing looking maps with the power of environmental storytelling.

As Magpie games describe it, “Along with your fellow dragons, you and your clutchmates will protect Dragonia from the Darkness and discover the true value of friendship.” Is it the “my little pony” of RPGs? Perhaps it is…but what is wrong with that? You are playing baby dragons and friendship is the key to making your characters' magic work, but that doesn’t mean it’s just for little kids. Join Rob and Sara on a “magical” journey into the world of Epyllion.

We all have times when we are not at our best. We finish a session, perhaps even on a good note, but days later just lose the drive to schedule the next. Or we approach the date for our next session and just don’t have the energy or state of mind to pull it together. This week Sara and Rob revisit ways to prepare and move beyond storyteller burnout.

To celebrate our 100th episode, Sara & Rob take a retrospective look at the last year of COVID lockdown, and what it has taught us about gaming in the digital age using online tools. Gaming online has been around for a while via services like Roll20, but with quarantine forcing everyone to exercise those options, it has certainly placed it more into the spotlight. We discuss what we’ve learned, what the pros and cons are, what our major take-aways are, and how it might affect our in-person gaming in the future!

As storytellers we are presented with the task of designing a story that others will be helping write, where randomness and fate will come into play and alter the flow. The question is, how do you carve it up into sessions and episodes that your players can enjoy, and what do you put into each session to make it feel like a story? This week Sara and Rob will examine what it takes to make your game feel like each session fits a greater narrative flow.

Typically, the Player Characters drive the plots of our Tabletop RPGs forward. And they should! The story is ABOUT them and their adventures, after all! The world should react to them and their choices accordingly. However, this isn’t always the case… Sometimes, the “hunters” become the “hunted,” and - for better or worse - the characters are put in a position to react to the plot happening TO them rather than BECAUSE OF them. Perhaps they’ve angered a powerful foe who now hunts them? Perhaps they’ve recovered a powerful item that the villain seeks to keep it from them? Or, perhaps even, our Player Characters are NOT the “good guys” in the story, and are sought by the law for their crimes! This week, Sara and Rob discuss how to handle a Reactive style of storytelling, and how it differs in narrative flow from the typical Proactive style of play.

Storytelling is a tool as old as society itself, and has been used to convey all fashions of emotions, ideas, and lessons. For as long as we have been using stories to uplift, though, we have also told darker tales - of caution, of horror, and of triumph over primeval darkness. What is it that draws us to stories of Dark Fantasy? Do we see validation of our darker aspects in the stories? Do we crave a deeper malevolence to triumph over to make that victory more meaningful? Is it just plain fun to tell spoopy stories? This week, Sara & Rob delve into the genre of Dark Fantasy, to see what makes it tick, and to explore the options we have available to us in the TTRPG world!

Fantasy stories often ignore the small details. Does the archer run out of arrows? Does the fighter have to repair his armor after the 30th fight? And how big is the bag of ammo the twin submachine gun toting Troll is carrying? But the drama can come when the small things matter. Perhaps having one more arrow, or a few less holes, or being forced to use those guns as blunt objects of destruction. Micromanagement has its rewards and drawbacks. This week Sara and Rob discuss the finer details of managing the little things.

Creating a new story can be daunting, but even more so when you add in all the things you "think" you need. A deep rich world, a cast of NPCs, and a deep meaningful plot that connects with each player on every adventure. But the truth is most of that is just flavor. Episodic storytelling gives you the ease of moving into an adventure with a fresh step each time without mucking in the deeper plots that novels and movies seem to make standard. This episode, Sara and Rob explore the joy, art, and challenges in creating episodic adventures.

But, how much should we focus on HOW these things work? Do we meticulously detail the science and physics behind them, or do we simply accept that they work, and move on? This is the difference between “Hard” and “Soft” storytelling, which Sara & Rob explore this week!

Where to begin? Rob and Sara discuss the fundamentals of creating a story for tabletop roleplay, and how the game system you choose influences how that story will be told. We begin by discussing various games, and the particular types of stories they’re good for telling with – specifically, we mention D&D, Palladium, DREAD, the ÆonVerse (Adventure!, Aberrant, Trinity), the World of Darkness, 7th Sea, and WR&M). Choosing the correct game system can make or break how your story is told around your table, by enhancing the aspects of the story you wish to focus on, such as dramatic heroics, pulp action, horror / tension, combat, etc.

If choosing a game system whole-cloth doesn’t work for your story, there’s always homebrewing! Writing your own setting and applying existing rules to it, or adding / removing / rewriting rules to better enhance how your story is told is a practice as old as gaming itself! We briefly discuss the pros and cons of homebrewing your own setting. We also discuss how to enhance a pre-written setting if writing your own isn’t your goal, by using established characters and set-pieces, but how to still subvert expectations so even the old can feel new and exciting!

As this is our first episode of our podcast, we had no listener questions, but we found a few at Reddit’s /r/DMAcademy subreddit that we tossed at one another to answer.
