We cannot build our lives on a lie. The stories we have been told and the stories we tell ourselves are lies, positive or negative, they can be destructive when we build on that as a foundation. Palm Sunday is here. The crowds surround Jesus shouting Hosanna which solidifies that HE is the Promised Messiah. The people of the time would know what this means as they reflect on their childhood knowledge of the Old Testament promises and passages. God did not create money, however, He had a lot to say about it. Why? Because as humans we can get caught in the whirlwind that is finances. Jesus shares a troubling statement in Matthew 7; that anyone can be saved... but not everyone will be. We must know and remember that this is not a BIG SHOW where we need to perform or audition for our spot in Heaven. Halftime breaks for athletes are meant to rest, regroup and reset. As an athlete needs a halftime during a game, so do we in life. Why? For the same reasons of the athlete. To rest in Jesus' presence, to regroup and ask ourselves, "Is what I'm doing actually helping me follow Jesus?" and to reset and go face life with a new confidence.

As we enter into the holiday season and the tail end of the year, we may be showing up burnt out, busy, grieving, etc. We're at the finish line but we begin slacking or giving up on the things that are actually of great benefit to us. Our relationship with God, the calling He's given us in this season, our community that He has us in, or the craft that He has gifted us with. This message is the encouragement we need to keep showing up. God does not look for our perfection, but our perseverance. Whether it's the holidays or the mundane moments, keep showing up.
As we come to the end of our lives, we can ask the question, "Is this the end or just the beginning?" And that answer differs based off the one choice you make in your life, to accept Jesus or to reject Him. In Malachi 4:1-2, we receive a glimpse into what the decision can look like for eternity, "the arrogant will be burned up like straw" and "but for those who fear my name...you will go leaping like calves let out to pasture." The Old Testament tells us many stories of the people of the times following fake and phony religions. Judges 17-18 is one of those stories and many of us have fallen into the trap that the Old Testament characters had fallen into... idolatry; wanting a god in our life but one that we can control. "You've Been Tricked: It IS a Big Deal"In this week's sermon, we dive into Luke 16:14-18 and examine three ways we can be tricked in our Christian walk: the love of money, being a slave to image, and the twisting of the law. We start by reflecting on childhood adventures and then identify the parts of the sermon that resonated most with us.Money can be a big problem when it becomes the focus of our lives, taking the place of God.
