Well, the episode has been delayed somewhat, goodbyes can be so hard. But, the hour grows late and the end draws near. On the final Movie Robcast, our intrepid casters in pod look back on the past eight years of podcasting, discuss their thoughts on Mad Max: Furiosa, and give thanks to all the wonderful guests who have appeared on the show over the years. They also express their gratitude to you, all the wonderful people out there who have tuned in to hear their ramblings over 200 episodes.

The Robs reach different opinions on A Haunting in Venice, the latest Hercules Poirot film from Kenneth Branagh, and they finish talking about The Creator, the new sci-fi epic from Rogue One director Gareth Edwards. Phew!

Then onto The Dive, the gripping tale of two sisters, played by Sophie Lowe and Louisa Krause, who take a scuba diving trip to heal old wounds. But, a landslide pins Krause underwater and running out of air, with Lowe desperately trying to save her.

In this episode, Robs Daniel and Wallis are delighted to welcome Erica Hernandez to the show. Hernandez stars in the new CBS series True Lies, based on the James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger 1994 blockbuster. The premise is the same - a frustrated wife, worried her husband is having an affair, discovers he is a secret agent - and the series packs in all the action of the movie while expanding the characters. Hernandez plays Maria, a character who is part of the spy team and created especially for the show. She talked to the Robs about the fun and excitement to be had making a hi-octane TV series, accompanied by a feisty dog called Milo.
True Lies premieres Wednesday, March 1 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network and will be available on the CBS app and for streaming on Paramount+.

Episode 172 of the Robcast sees Robs Daniel & Wallis peering back into the mists of cinematic time, and discovering a classic of British horror. There is a reason the pair chose to look back, and they reveal why in the ep. Said classic is of course Michael Reeves' Witchfinder General, but you knew that. Notorious and heavily cut in its day, this tale of corruption and madness set against the backdrop of the English Civil War has been restored to pretty much what Reeves intended, and retains its power to disturb.
The Robs discuss its brilliance, its talented, troubled director, the making of the movie, and the wonderful cast assembled. Including Vincent Price, magnificent in a career defining role. Even if Michael Reeves hated having to use him instead of his own choice, Donald Pleasance.

Robs Daniel and Wallis and their wonderful guests have finished the deep-dive into James Cameron's feature film back catalogue. Now it is time for the Robs to return to Pandora for the belated follow-up to the biggest film of all time. So, what do they make of Avatar: The Way of Water? Ah, to reveal it here would be spoilerific, and this is an episode with a clearly marked spoiler section, so we're not going to give anything away. Suffice to say, there are points of agreement and points of divergence.
The Robs also discuss the 3D, the High Frame Rate look of the film, the unusually disruptive audience at the BFI IMAX, and more. Come on in, the water's lovely...

Our James Cameron retrospective comes to a spectacular end with the third biggest film of all time and the biggest film of all time. Box office wise. We could only be speaking about Titanic and Avatar. Water show Rob D and Rob W have for you, you'll be blue if you miss it! We must apologise, we're just giddy after four great episodes of Cameron conversation.
For this final voyage, we are joined by Alex Leadbeater of Screen Rant, Collider and Comic Book Resources to discuss Titanic. Alex is a bit of a buff when it comes to the doomed White Star Line vessel, so was the perfect guest to talk about Cameron's sweeping romance. For Avatar (starting at 1:03:30), Mark and Elaine Gregersen of The Honeymoon Period podcast join the Robs. Elaine is an Avatar fan (while acknowledging its flaws), so just the type of person needed to balance the mixed feelings of Mark and Robs D & W.

Our journey through James Cameron's movies continues into the 1990s, and JC's final two movies (to date) with Arnold Schwarzenegger. We begin with one of the finest films of the decade, Terminator 2: Judgment Day. What Aliens is to Rob Daniel, T2 is to Rob Wallis, and Mr. W reveals why in the episode. Not that Rob D is sniffy about the film. In fact , you could say this is a T2 love-in.
Then onto True Lies, and here the Robs are joined by Chris Carr, producer and host of the excellent Secrets and Spies podcast. All three have reservations about the film, and discuss how the film's sexual and racial politics seem out of kilter compared to the rest of Cameron's work. Chris also brings his expertise on all things espionage to look at what True Lies gets right and wrong.

Episode 164 of The Movie Robcast is a bumper voyage through James Cameron's 1980s sci-fi extravaganzas. From the low-budget The Terminator, to his first studio gig with Aliens, to the seeming insanity of what he challenged himself and the cast to achieve with The Abyss, it's all here.
Robs Daniel & Wallis realised they could not take this journey alone, and have recruited great guests.
From 1:00 they are joined by Jesse Bailey and Cameron Harrison of the wonderful Open Pike Night podcast to discuss Cameron's breakthrough classic, The Terminator.
From 1:10:00 the Robs welcome back frequent guest Sarah Johnson to talk all things Aliens. Aliens happens to be Sarah's favourite movie (she has exquisite taste) so there really was no better person to wax lyrical about James Cameron's masterpiece (according to Rob Daniel, and Sarah Johnson). We tried to keep our enthusiasm to short controlled bursts, but do occasionally gush.
Then, at 2:02:00, our intrepid hosts are joined by another Robcast regular, Adrian Zak. Rob Wallis is unable to join this chat, but does reveal where he is. Rob D and Adrian then do a deep-dive (we're sorry) into Cameron's movie. A movie that tested the limits of both cast and crew, resulted in some of the best underwater scenes ever put to film, and changed cinema forever with its groundbreaking use of CGI. It's also Cameron's weakest film of the three, and we talk about why in the ep.

In episode 163 of the Robcast, we begin our deep-dive into the works of James Cameron. You'll hear Robs Daniel and Wallis give an intro to the guy who directed the biggest and third biggest movies of all time, and then we get into the meat of the episode: a review of Cameron's debut movie, Piranha II: The Spawning. For this expedition, the Robs are joined by MJ Smith and Sarah Buddery, hosts of the wonderful podcast Let's Jaws for a Minute. Well, who better to deliver a verdict on Cameron's first fishy foray into film than the creators of a podcast about the ultimate fish movie? Piranha II comes a close second. We... we can't back that up.
During a discussion best described as "punchy," Sarah, MJ, and the Robs harpoon what has to be one of the shonkiest movies ever made. They discuss the film's fraught production, the weird porno vibe the film gives off, and ponder whether James Cameron is responsible for more of this than he'd like to admit. There is also discussion of the film's "hands on" executive producer, Ovidio G. Assonitis, who fired Cameron during production. Oh, and we discover what the Americans have instead of budgie smugglers. So, put on your respirators, it's time to get wet.

Both Robs Daniel and Wallis love director Andrew Dominik’s The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Mr. Wallis thinks it might be in his Top 10 movies of all time, while Mr. Daniel ranks it as his favourite Western. The Robs are also fans of Dominik’s movies Chopper and Killing Them Softly. As it has been 10 years since Killing Them Softly, they were both hotly anticipating the director’s return with the Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde.

Okay, this episode of the Robcast is an indulgence. The Robs grabbed themselves some fish and chips and a beer and settled down for the final episode of Neighbours. Neither had watched the show in years and years and years. So they decided to record themselves watching it and talking to see if it would be at all useable. The jury is still out on that, but what the hell, we’re publishing it anyway. Mainly because the audio of Mike and Jane’s scenes are so lovely. Calling it a bonus episode might be stretching it though.
So, take a listen if only for the pilot errors – e.g. Annie Jones plays Jane, Rob D, not Annie Harris. Also, the woman next to Holly Valance was Natalie Imbruglia…
And hear Robs Daniel and Wallis react with astonishment when learning how old Ian Smith (aka Harold Bishop) is. It must be those strong antipodean genes…
Normal service will be resumed with the next episode, when the Robs will board the Bullet Train and also reveal their thoughts on The Gray Man.

Presumably in some other universe this episode of The Movie Robcast was released as intended before our Top Gun: Maverick instalment. This is not that universe. Director Robert Eggers follows up The Witch and The Lighthouse with another definite article-titled feast for the brain and the senses, and for the first time brings action chops along. Alexander Skarsgård is the titular bloke not from down south, a Viking prince looking to avenge his father's death and reclaim his kingdom birthright from his treacherous uncle. A starry cast also includes Nicole Kidman, Anya Taylor-Joy, Claes Bang, and Willem Dafoe, plus Björk as a strikingly garbed Seer.

Episode 143 sees Robs Daniel & Wallis in Deep Water, with Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas. Which is fitting, considering this is the first time the Robs have tackled an erotic thriller. So, what do they make of this glossy movie, filmed back in 2019 and debuting on Amazon Prime here in the UK? The pedigree is not bad. Affleck and de Armas are genuine movie stars, and in the director's chair sits Adrian Lyne. You know, the guy who made Fatal Attraction back in 1987, and has made a career for himself directing good looking films about good looking people in bad relationships. 9 1/2 Weeks, Indecent Proposal, Lolita, Unfaithful. Adrian has a type.
This is the first movie Lyne has made since 2002's Unfaithful. So, slip into something comfortable and hear what we have to say about his latest. Come on in, the water's lovely...

In episode 140, we go back... back to The Matrix. Why are we returning to a film that neither Rob was fond of, you ask? The reason is because regular contributor to the Robcast Sarah Johnson has keen insights into the movie from an LGBTQ+ perspective that we wanted to share. During a great discussion, Sarah recounts the punitive legislation made against the LGBTQ+ community in the UK during the 80s. 90s, and into the 2000s, and how defiance is a key theme to this latest Matrix. And as she notes, defiance can take surprising forms.
Sarah also has impeccable taste in action movies, so we had to get her take on a sequel to a film that revolutionised action and sci-fi cinema over twenty years ago.

In episode 139 of The Movie Robcast, Robs Daniel and Wallis take a walk down the dark and deadly Nightmare Alley. The new movie from the brilliant Guillermo del Toro is based on William Lindsay Gresham's 1946 novel, previously made as a film noir in 1947, and features an dazzling cast including Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Toni Collette, Willem Dafoe, Ron Perlman, Richard Jenkins and others.
Cooper plays a drifter who has a talent for mentalism, and wants to move from the travelling carnival to which he's hitched for the bright lights of New York, where his "clairvoyance" will earn him the big bucks. But, pride and ambition go before a fall and del Toro has created a world light on forgiveness.
So, what do the Robs think of Nightmare Alley? Unfortunately, their powers of mental projection are a little rusty, so you'll have to listen in to find out. They promise it's worth the journey...

Time for another episode of meta-movie, and in episode 138 after all these years we go back to where it all started, back to Woodsboro. Yep, the latest instalment of Scream leans into Hollywood's current passion for self-reflexive "requels." Which is fitting for a movie that made meta mainstream back in 1996. The question to be asked is, does the joke still work? Or the horror for that matter?
The Robs discuss this and much more, including the returning cast members from the original Scream movie, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette, plus the new cast led by Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega and Mikey Madison. Rob D gets wistful remembering what it was like to see the original Scream upon release a generation ago. Rob W reminds us he was far too young to have seen it back then.

It may be 2022, but we're starting the year looking back at 2021. It may not have been a banner year in general, but it was a fine year for cinema. Bond returned in triumph, Spider-Man topped off the year with box office glory, Cruella proved Disney could turn a classic cartoon character into a live-action triumph, Dune turned out to be filmable, and West Side Story was the remake we didn't know we needed.
But, it was not all about the blockbusters, and cinema in 2021 was actually better in those smaller films. Riders of Justice, Quo Vadis, Aida, Nomadland, Shiva Baby, Judas and the Black Messiah, The Lost Daughter, Shadow in the Cloud, and many more shone light on another dark year and demonstrated the exciting power of cinema.
There were some bumps in the road. Ghostbusters: Afterlife, anyone? The Matrix Resurrections? Or (shudder), Halloween Kills?
So, plug in and check out the films that rocked us and shocked us in 2021.

In ep 133 of The Movie Robcast, Robs Daniel & Wallis suit up, fire up their proton packs and try not to cross the streams as they deliver their verdict on Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Will it please audiences more than the little loved 2016 reboot, or is this just another case of 80s nostalgia swallowing its own tail? It’s by Jason Reitman, who’s dad Ivan directed the original classic movie. Does he make his dad proud?

At 22.00 Rob Daniel tries to describe Dashcam, the outrageous new horror movie from Rob Savage, who splashed onto the scene last with the excellent frightener Host.
Back to Rob W at 25.40 for Terence Davies’ new movie Benediction, starring Jack Lowden and Peter Calpadi.
Sticking with Rob W, at 27.55 he discusses Petite Maman, directed by Celine Sciamma, who previously made Portrait of a Lady on Fire.
At 29.55 both Robs have fun reviewing Paul Verhoeven’s wonderful nunsploitation movie Benedetta.
Finally, at 35.00 the podcasting duo warm their hearts recounting King Richard, the film about Serene and Venus Williams’ father that we think is going to nab Smith that Best Actor Oscar.
Oh, we all give a quick review of Halloween Kills at 10.50. Spoiler: it’s total rubbish.

Episode 129 of The Movie Robcast is the first instalment of our London Film Festival review. To keep it to a manageable length we’ve decided to break it down into multiple episodes this year. Kicking off proceedings is Jeymes Samuel’s lively Western, The Harder They Fall, starring Jonathan Majors, Idris Elba, Regina King, Lakeith Stanfield, Zazie Beetz and Delroy Lindo. The film is a strong contender for best ensemble cast of the year.

Can Villeneuve succeed where David Lynch failed back in 1984, and land Frank Herbert’s epic novel, the Great White Whale of sci-fi literature? Episode 127 of The Movie Robcast is a license to thrill affair. With No Time to Die finally released in cinemas, Robs Daniel & Wallis can let loose their opinions of Daniel Craig’s final 007 outing. Unsurprisingly, they have plenty to talk about. From how this compares to Craig’s previous Bond movies and other films in the franchise generally, to the performances of series newcomers Lashana Lynch, Ana de Armas and Rami Malek, to the possible influence of Wallace and Gromit on Bond 25, and much more.

Chris gave fantastic insights into how this Bond ties into the series as a whole and the Ian Fleming novels, all while a helicopter apparently hovered above his flat. Jonathan Demme’s The Silence of the Lambs hits the big 3-0, while Michael Mann’s Manhunter reaches 35. Which makes 75% of the contributors to this episode feel rather creaky in the bones…
Hungry to join the Robs in this discussion are splendid guests Ian Bird and Sarah Johnson. They dig deep into Demme’s multiple Oscar-winning shocker, recalling its impact at the time, the ways in which it broke the Hollywood mould, its progressive depiction of a female protagonist, and the accusations of transphobia and homophobia levelled against it.
Then onto Manhunter, the initially overlooked but now lauded chiller that gave Hannibal Lecter (or Lecktor as this film has it…) his first big screen outing. There is also plenty of chat about author Thomas Harris’ novels, the differences between Anthony Hopkins and Brian Cox’s Hannibal Lecters, and the sheer awesomeness of Jodie Foster's performance as Clarice Starling and William Petersen's as Will Graham.

In episode 108 the Robs review the much-delayed Wonder Woman 1984. As this ep was recorded on the 23rd December 2020 there are some Christmas references and no mention of the 6th January’s insurrection in the Capitol Building, despite plenty of Trump and America talk.
Critical opinion of WW84 has been mixed, to put it kindly, but we found plenty to enjoy in Diana Prince’s second solo outing. One thing we neglected to say in the episode is to stick around for a rather lovely mid-end credit sequence.

For most, 2020 was the worst year in memory. Light in the darkness however came not from movie projectors, but the glow of TV screens as we were all forced inside for most of the year.
While many major films were shunted back to 2021, 2020 was still a quality year for the movies. In this episode the Robs, ably assisted by a roster of special guests including The Honeymoon Period podcast, review the past 12 months in filmland.
There have been wonderful highs, including Parasite, Shirley, Possessor, Mangrove, Saint Maud, Host, and Portrait of a Lady of Fire amongst others.
Not everything has been rosy, and subpar movies were led by the self-satisfied banality of Tenet.
One other bright spot is that 2020 is the inaugural year of The Robbies, a set of awards we've decided to give? Listen on to hear who wins Best Actor, Actress, Script and so on. It's like the Oscars, but with fewer songs and under 5 hours long. We also end with The Movie Robcasts' Top 10 of 2020.
In a year where there hasn’t been much to cheer about, the movies have delivered once again.

Episode 105 of The Movie Robcast is a case of “you’re gonna need a bigger boat”.
Originally Elaine and Mark Gregersen of The Honeymoon Period podcast were meant to be guest speakers in our Jaws 45th anniversary episode. But it turns out having four guests on, all of whom know their Jaws onions, would put the episode at three hours plus or mean cutting out some Jawsome chat.
So, we present Elaine and Mark on Jaws Revisited, a sequel to episode 105. And bucking the trend of Jaws sequels, this one is as good as the original!

A Jaws discussion would not be complete without venturing into the troubled waters of the sequels, and the relatively calmer currents of the Jaws rip-offs and “homages”. No Jaws sequel comes close to the greatness of Piranha, Orca or The Shallows.

The Movie Robcast reaches episode 99! And in the final double digit episode before we boldly to get into three figures (gasp) Robs Daniel and Wallis cast an eye over Disney’s live action Mulan remake.
The pair were really rather impressed with the 1998 animated version when reviewing it back on episode 87. So, what do they make of this $200m reimagining that has bypassed cinemas to premiere on Disney+? With a £19.99 price tag…
Their chat dives deep into what’s hot and what’s not in the film, plus Hong Kong action movies, that 1998 original, plus the online calls for a boycott of the movie following star Yifei Liu’s controversial comments about the Hong Kong protests.
Then, Rob Wallis delivers his verdict on Charlie Kaufman’s I’m Thinking of Ending Things, which has premiered on Netflix. The Twittersphere declared it a headscratcher of Tenet proportions, but what does Mr. Wallis think?

The three dive deep into Nolan’s dream world, discussing its roots in the heist movie, how it fits into Nolan’s filmography, what is good about it, what is gasp not so good about it, and why it endures a decade later.

Episode 96 of The Movie Robcast looks at two very different films, both of which bypassed cinemas due to Coronavirus to premiere on streaming services.
Tom Hanks’ Greyhound tells the World War 2 tale of a captain having to steer a convoy of ships through U-boat infested waters in the North Atlantic. And, excitingly, friend of the podcast Adrian Zak cameos to give his opinion on this lean, impressive naval thriller which has docked on Apple TV+.
Then onto Palm Springs, an imaginative spin on the Groundhog Day premise starring Andy Samberg, Cristin Milioti and J.K. Simmons, and which can be found on Hulu. The Palm Springs discussion begins at 55.55.

Welcome to this bonus episode of The Movie Robcast. The BFI Player Japan 2020 season continues in June with a collection dedicated to Yasujiro Ozu, joining fantastic collections on Akira Kurosawa and Classic Japanese movies.
We had the opportunity to talk with Dr. Alexander Jacoby about Yasujiro Ozu and why the director is so important to Japanese cinema. An expert on Japan and Japanese film, Alex conveys why the director’s films will dazzle new audiences.
The BFI Player collection includes the numerous masterworks Ozu made, including Early Spring, his final movie An Autumn Afternoon and his most famous film, Tokyo Story.

Episode 92 of The Movie Robcast sees Robs Daniel & Wallis looking back at Damien Chazelle’s blistering, Oscar winning 2014 debut, Whiplash. And to make sure the Robs are not rushing or dragging, they’ve invited their friend Tessa Scott along for her opinion. It was Tess’ first time watching the movie and she delivers a cymbal crash of great insights.
Across a lively 70mins, the trio discuss what makes Chazelle’s debut so memorable six years after release, the performances from Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons (who picked up a Best Supporting Actor Oscar playing the music teacher from Hell), how the film compares to La La Land, and much more.
Including, how much does the film side with Simmons’ near sociopathically pushy teacher, Fletcher and what does the ending mean? Rob W and Tess have a far darker reading of the film that forces Rob D to re-evaluate his take-outs from the movie.
But, enough of the warm-up act, let’s get on with the main attraction…
Would it be cheesy to describe episode 91 as "suh-MO-kin'!"? It would? Okay, we'll Carrey on at a slightly more measured tone.
With Sonic the Hedgehog still one of the country's most recent movie releases despite hitting cinemas in February, the two Robs decided to delve deep into Jim Carrey's catalogue and review more than the blue-rinse speed hog. Although they do talk Sonic, don't worry.
For Rob Wallis in 1994, Carrey was a formative movie influence. For Rob Daniel, more advanced in years and considerably creakier, Carrey was an annoyance besmirching the good name of cinema. Ironically, both the Robs learnt to like Jim through The Mask, that zany family movie that happily still holds up today.
The Robs look at how Mr. C's comic persona operates along specific lines, yet is flexible enough to fit movies as diverse as The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Dumb and Dumber and Sonic the Hedgehog. And how it sometimes goes wrong... cough, Ace Ventura and The Number 23.

An easy actor to now take for granted or dismiss entirely (and his public comments on vaccines don't help), it was a genuine surprise to discover how much fun is to be had in reviewing what is a remarkably rich filmography.
So... shall we get to it? Alrighty then...
The Movie Robcast reaches its 90th episode! And we’re marking the occasion with bang, looking at Chris Hemsworth’s explosive actioner Extraction and Gareth Evan’s brutal crime epic Gangs of London.
The Robs find a particularly familiar whiff to Extraction. But, they take the opportunity to invoke the oeuvre of straight-to-rental favourite Scott Adkins when discussing how closely Chris Hemsworth’s movie sticks to action movie beats. They also take time to ponder the business savvy of titling a film “Avengement” as Adkins did. Tune in for why it makes more sense than you’d think.
Then onto Gangs of London. Rob D binged the whole series, while Rob W only had time to watch the first episode, so the discussion is spoiler free. But, both are impressed by what they saw and how effectively The Raid 2 director Gareth Evans has brought his signature action style to the small screen.
Throw in some musings on action filmmaking while social distancing and what other shows are currently worth a look and it’s a case of episode 90 with a bullet…

For multiple obvious reasons, No Time to Die has been moved back to November. But we still wanted to give you a Bond episode for April.
There were twenty-four 007 missions from which to choose, including some of the most influential films ever made. So, why did we go for Moonraker, the Bond film typically dismissed as the Star Wars rip-off with a double-taking pigeon?
The short answer is because Rob W likes it. The longer answer is, because Rob W likes it and Rob D was scared Rob W would go full-on Jaws if he didn’t get his way. That’s also the false answer.
The real reason is because Moonraker is a fascinating Bond film. Hot off the phenomenal success of The Spy Who Loved Me, the producers basically remade that film again but merged with George Lucas’ space smash and Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
In a packed episode, the Robs compare the film to Ian Fleming’s source novel (they are very different), try to make sense of a plot that plays like the ultimate cheese dream, and discuss the legitimately impressive filmmaking that makes this a better Bond than you remember.
There is also space (ha ha) for the Robs to belt out their own Bond song. Now, do pay attention 007…

The Movie Robcast will return. Comparing a 90s classic with a 2020 video game adaptation. All will be revealed in episode 90!
Episode 88 sees the two Robs taking a deep dive into four films fast-tracked to home rental when Coronavirus closed cinemas. With such a mixed bag, it should be no surprise to read it's a case of good and bad (not much ugly though).
There is only one real stinker in the bunch, another that never quite finds the correct tone, one is an absolute blast, and another is a Top 10 of the Year contender. But, which is which? You'll have to listen to find out... although you may be able to guess which one will not be a candidate for best of the year lists.
The Robs are remote recording again, still sticking to the rules of social distancing. During the episode, Rob W is brought light refreshment from a family member. Rob D, who is social distancing alone, is taunted by an ice cream van.

The Robs originally planned for the first episode in April to be Disney's live-action remake of Mulan. But, with that being another Coronavirus-related postponed movie, they thought why not go back to the 1998 version? Particularly as Rob D had not actually seen that one, despite always planning to. As a wise franchise one said, life finds a way...
So, with Disney+ handily launching the week of record, Rob Daniel & Rob Wallis took a look at the 1998 Mulan. This then turned into an epic discussion of the film, the Disney Renaissance of the 1990s, Disney's classic movies (specifically Lady and the Tramp), the success (or not) of the "live action" remakes, racial sensitivity and the wonders of Chinese action cinema.
You'd never guess the Robs are stuck inside, would you? One of them even watched Mulan II...
They also give initial thoughts on Disney+ and there is even space for their thoughts on ITV's decision to show Steven Soderbergh's Contagion.

Episode 86 of The Movie Robcast sees the Robs remote recording. Abiding by social distancing measures, they're in their respective abodes, but that doesn't stop them from covering a wide range of movie topics and other affairs of state.
Unsurprisingly, top of the list is the Coronavirus pandemic. COVID-19 took quite a turn for the dramatic since the last episode, with first cinemas and theatres closing, then pubs and restaurants, then the whole country being put into lockdown.
So, Contagion and Outbreak are part of the discussion, along with thoughts on what will happen to cinema releases if the pandemic stretches into the summer,
It's not all doom and gloom though. The Robs discuss which films will be eligible for Oscars 2021 from what managed to get a cinema release before the Coronavirus really hit. Could it be Bad Boys For Life's year?
Rob D rhapsodises about Netflix's GLOW, which is a real tonic in these dark times. The two also discuss what classic 007 mission they'll accept now No Time to Die has been pushed back to November (as of writing...).

In episode 85 of The Movie Robcast, Robs Daniel and Wallis go on an epic journey while reviewing Pixar’s Onward.
Well, they’re outside in the middle of London again as Rob Wallis is on his lunchbreak and they have to find shelter because it starts raining. It seemed epic at the time.
As they are discussing a fantasy movie, Rob W has opportunity to bust out his Gollum impersonation. It really is something rather special.
Conversation inevitably moves onto the impact of the Coronavirus. As this was recorded on March 11th, the Robs still think Disney’s live-action Mulan will be the next movie they cover. The beautiful fools. Disney subsequently announced they were postponing Mulan indefinitely, but we’ve left the discussion in because it shows how quickly things have been moving.

Episode 84 of The Movie Robcast casts an eye over the latest telling of The Invisible Man. From the Blumhouse stable and directed by Upgrade creator Leigh Whannell, it boasts Elisabeth Moss in the lead role as an abused woman who fears her ex may be closer than she realises.
One of the Robs enjoyed this take on the classic, the other had more trouble seeing the good stuff. But, it makes for a lively discussion and they both agree this remake of a classic Universal monster is far superior to the 2017 redo of The Mummy.

The Movie Robcast is on a roll! Three episodes in one week, it must be awards season. But, we couldn't let Parasite's UK theatrical release come and go without us reviewing this record-breaking, Oscar winning triumph.
So, the two Robs take a close view at Bong Joon-ho's latest movie. This could be the director's best yet, and when you remember his previous films include The Host and Memories of Murder that is saying something.
Any discussion of Parasite also has to go into spoiler territory, which the Robs duly do. Don't worry, we give a clear warning so you won't accidentally stumble into areas you don't want to hear until you've seen the movie.
As this was originally supposed to be a joint episode with Birds of Prey, we had to specially record an intro from a wet and chilly Leicester Sq. So, over to you Robs, outside the Prince Charles Cinema...
In episode 82 of The Movie Robcast, Robs Daniel and Wallis review Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn Suicide Squad spin-off.
To do full justice to the movie, its comic origins and add an important female point-of-view on this female-led movie, Rob Daniel also sits down with friend of the podcast Sarah Johnson for her take. Sarah has a fantastic knowledge of all things Birds of Prey, Harley Quinn and movies, coupled with impeccable taste, so it was great to have her on!
The wide-ranging discussion covers Harley Quinn in the comics and in the movies, the Birds of Prey team, the Gotham Sirens, the John Wick stunt team's involvement in the film and whether or not it's any darn good. One Rob thinks the film is a blast, the other that it is hobbled by its flaws. But, on which side does Sarah come down?

Robs Daniel and Wallis give their take on Oscars 2020, aka The 92nd Academy Awards, aka the year that a film not in the English language finally won the Best Picture statue, not just Best Foreign Film. Sorry, Best International Film, as the Academy are now calling it.
Parasite's sweeping victory, picking up four Oscars, turned an otherwise standard Oscars show into a night to remember. But, there are still plenty of other things to talk about, from Joaquin Phoenix's heart-in-the-right-place-but-wildly-scattershot acceptance speech for his performance in Joker to Brad Pitt's rather moving words when winning Best Supporting Actor for Once Upon A Time... in Hollywood.
Although the best speech of the evening has to go to Olivia Colman, when presenting the Oscar for Best Actor. We'll let you listen to find out why.

The Movie Robcast reaches its 80th episode, so we have a fittingly bumper show in store. Opening with a tribute to the late, great Terry Jones, who died on 21st January 2020, aged 77 after a long battle with dementia. The two Robs were raised on Life of Brian so have words of praise for the Python polymath.
The Robs then look at two movies in this ep, which seem poles apart but complement the discussion. Jay Roach's Bombshell examines the sexual harassment scandal that rocked Fox News and saw the end of its sleazebag-in-chief Roger Ailes. The Robs discuss the strength of the film, particularly the stunningly accurate performance from Charlize Theron as Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly, superbly supported by Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie. Episode 79 sees Robs Daniel & Wallis at London's O2, reviewing both the ridiculous and the, not sublime, but well-crafted...
The ridiculous is Guy Ritchie's dated, mean-spirited gangster fluff The Gentlemen, starring Matthew McConaughey, Hugh Grant, Charlie Hunnam, Henry Golding and Michelle Dockery, all of whom should know better. Wanna see a film where cash-poor, land-rich aristos are the real victims? No, us neither, but we did so we could warn you off it.
Much better is Sam Mendes' 1917, his World War I epic made to resemble one continuous real-time shot. A fusion of Dunkirk, Saving Private Ryan, Gallipoli and Paths of Glory, it is a film of some pretty lofty ambition and success. See it on the biggest screen you can find.
Our intrepid casters in pod also lament Little Women's snub at the Baftas and the Golden Globes. So cheer them up by going to see the movie (and listening to this podcast, of course...).

Episode 78 of The Movie Robcast is proof that bad publicity can be as effective as positive hype. Rob Daniel had no intention of seeing Tom Hooper's adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit stage show. And then the negative reviews arrived. And kept on arriving. And conjured such bizarre and terrible images of what awaited audiences for Cats that he had to see the horrors for himself.
Paying £10, he saw... oh did he see. And now cannot unsee. Rob Wallis is a little kinder towards the film, but not enough to give a pull line that could get The Movie Robcast its first poster quote.
So, prepare for a journey to a fantastical place that should be full of wonder, but instead resembles The Island of Dr. Moreau. Where cats have human faces, mice have human faces and cockroaches have human faces. Where cats have hands and wear trainers. And everyone sings, but there is not a single good song to be had. A toxic place where no-one is feline fine.

The Electric Shadows Podcast has rebranded! We're now The Movie RobCast, a more befitting title for a podcast about movies by two guys named Rob. It took us 76 episodes to reach that realisation... thanks for sticking with us.
But, fear not. The same degree of movie passion, knowledge and penchant for tangents will be as present and correct as they were under the old banner.
In this episode Robs Daniel and Wallis run through their Top 10s of 2019. There is some overlap, there is a microbudget BFI film that Rob Daniel must see and one of the Rob's no.1 movie is something that went straight-to-rental. The movie landscape is shifting out there, people. Luckily you have two guides to make sense of the madness...
The Electric Shadows Podcast reaches its three-quarters of a century mark! And in the 75th episode Robs Daniel and Wallis see just how strong the Force is with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
The film has proven as divisive (almost) as The Last Jedi, and our two intrepid casters in pod have opinions on what it does well and where it stumbles. We don't want to spoil the discussion here too much, so we'll not go into specifics. Suffice to say, there is a spoiler section because the film packs in quite a few surprises. But, it's behind a clearly defined spoiler wall midway through, so don't worry.
Also, this will be the final episode under the moniker, The Electric Shadows Podcast. From episode 76, we are rebranding to The Movie Robcast! But, it'll be the same level of geeky discourse, so if you've liked what you've heard so far, nothing in the shows will be changing.

Episode 74 of The Electric Shadows Podcast picks up where episode 73 left off. Robs Daniel and Wallis found that Mike Flanagan's adaptation of Stephen King's Doctor Sleep stayed with them, its themes and characters lingering in the mind.
Someone of the same opinion is regular Electric Shadows Podcast contributor Mr Ian Bird, who also happened to be in town and was up for explaining why he was so impressed with the excellent chiller.
We recorded this on Sunday 17th November, the day after the BBC's interview with Prince Andrew. That slow-motion car crash was such a fascinating insight into the power and privilege an old order feels it deserves, and the crimes of Prince Andrew's one-time friend Jeffrey Epstein were so targeted on the young, the whole sordid affair weirdly resonated with a discussion of Doctor Sleep.
Also discussed is how Doctor Sleep is a more rewarding exploration of childhood trauma than Joker, and our disappointment that while that anti-superhero film has crossed $1bn at the global box office, Doctor Sleep is struggling to find a sizeable audience. It's destined to become a hit later down the line, but is galling for those of us who love it now.
The episode also turns into a love-in about all things Stephen King, which is never bad. So again, come and play with us, forever and ever and ever...

Episode 73 journey back to The Overlook Hotel for a discussion of Doctor Sleep, the sequel to both Stephen King and Stanley Kubrick's The Shining.
Robs Daniel and Wallis also take this as an opportunity to review Stanley Kubrick's classic horror film, discussing why it still has such a hold on the imagination nearly forty years later.
Horror fans will know Kubrick changed large parts of King's book, including the ending. So our intrepid casters in pod review how Doctor Sleep compares to King's source novel and spins gold from referring back to Kubrick's 1980 chiller.
They still find time for horsing around, including Rob Wallis pulling "Jack Nicholson frozen in the snow faces". A lot of "Jack Nicholson frozen in the snow faces". He's just luck the wind didn't change when we were recording. You'll know he's doing it when you hear the giggling...

In the last ten years paying to see Terminator films has been something of a fool's errand and the trailers for Dark Fate were not promising. So, what did they think? You'll have to listen in to find out.

Episode 71 of The Electric Shadows Podcast is an epic review of the 2019 BFI London Film Festival. Over the course of two hours, Robs Daniel & Wallis run through their respective Top 10s of the festival.
There is some crossover, but some shocks are in store as films make one Rob's list but not the other.
They also make time to chat through notable films they saw that didn't make the Top 10 and, inevitably, there is the odd tangent or two.
Also included are clips from press conferences and Q&As the Robs attended. The full Scorsese-De Niro-Pacino press conference will be posted when The Irishman premieres in November, but you can listen to a segment here with Scorsese and De Niro discussing the beginnings of the project.

In episode 70 of The Electric Shadows Podcast, Robs Daniel and Wallis set their laughing gear to discussing Todd Phillips' Joker. A controversial film being hailed as a masterpiece, the two Robs are baffled as to why.
They both talk about why the film left them unimpressed and non-plussed, from the slavish homage to Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy to Joaquin Phoenix's mannered performance.
Rob D recounts the negative reactions his review has met on Facebook and R&R attempt to figure out where the love is coming from.
To help them, friend of the podcast Adrian Zak joins Rob D for a brief chat, describing what he found to like in the movie. Never say we're not balanced.

The Electric Shadows Podcast reaches Bill and Ted's favourite number. In episode 69 Robs Daniel and Wallis stare into the deadlights of IT Chapter Two.
Rob Daniel is none too impressed at how much has been chopped out of Stephen King's novel, despite the 171 minutes running time. Rob Wallis finds more to enjoy, but still has issues he runs through in a spoiler section. Yep, a spoiler section because no discussion of IT can avoid talking about how the novel's notoriously difficult ending is translated to the big screen.
Our intrepid casters of pod also make space to discuss the 1990 IT mini-series, this year's Pet Sematary and the upcoming Doctor Sleep. They even make space for a brief discussion of an IT adaptation made for Indian TV, plus Rob Wallis' recollections of working through those Stephen King made-for-TV adaptations.

Episode 68 of The Electric Shadows Podcast sees Robs Daniel & Wallis look back at the Arrow Video FrightFest's twentieth anniversary festival and run-down their top 10 films. Gems such as Rabid, The Dark Red, Ready or Not and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark all get warm words.
As do the two five star films to play the festival, The Wind and A Good Woman is Hard to Find.
Then, in a bumper episode, the Robs move on to what is getting them revved up at the 63rd BFI London Film Festival. Expect discussion of opening film, The Personal History of David Copperfield, closing film The Irishman, directed by Martin Scorsese, and in between such appetite whetting movies as Jojo Rabbit, Bad Education, Le Mans 66, Vivarium, The Cave, The Painted Bird and The King.
You've gotta love festival season...
Robs Daniel and Wallis take a good, long look at Quentin Tarantino's latest movie, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. What better way to tackle an expansive, rambling tapestry of a movie than by having a rambling, discursive chat of their own.
Over 70 minutes the two Robs look at everything from old Hollywood and the rise of the new Hollywood to how Tarantino seems to be making his own statement on women in Hollywood, the troubles of weaving real life tragedy into a wonderland fantasy, how the film treats real life figures Sharon Tate and Bruce Lee, and so much more. Including Burt Reynolds sad passing before he could appear in the film and the unblinking ferocity of Dakota Fanning.
Apologies for the sound issue, the Robs were unable to record in their usual room so lots of Noise Reduction and level balancing was required. They won't bore you with the details, but rest assured our intrepid travellers in pod will be in their normal place next time.
Episode 66 of The Electric Shadows Podcast tackles two different films indeed.
First up we have Spider-Man: Far From Home. Can the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe swing as high as Spider-Man: Homecoming or Avengers: Endgame? Or Into the Spider-Verse for that matter? Robs Daniel and Wallis take a look and rank this latest instalment against the webslinger's previous big screen adventures.
The episode then journeys into the rural horrors of Ari Aster's Midsommar. The follow-up to Aster's Hereditary, it's folklore and cult horror in one. But, does Rob Daniel think it an improvement on Hereditary, that critical darling that left him cold? Rob Wallis was an Hereditary fan, so what does he make of this latest outing?

In episode 65, we welcome a special guest to The Electric Shadows Podcast. Regular listeners will know that frequent ESP contributor Ian Bird knows his movies.
What you may not be aware of is Ian’s 10-year-old son Ronan is also something of a film authority, particularly when it comes to monster flicks.
This isn’t patronising flattery, listen to Ronan’s 12-minute discussion of Godzilla: King of the Monsters in this episode and you’ll know what we mean. His kaiju knowledge puts Robs Daniel & Wallis in the shade.
To the extent where we have had to include a postscript correction as Ronan spotted two errors in the Robs' discussion.
Which is why you’ll find it at the end of the podcast as there was no way our opinions could follow Ronan’s.

In episode 64 of The Electric Shadows Podcast, Robs Daniel and Wallis show remarkable restraint in largely eschewing X-related puns as they discuss Dark Phoenix.
But, they do talk about the long, windy road of this 19-year-old franchise, why in some ways it is superior to the MCU, where it has stumbled, and what they think of the latest instalment.
Which, of course, is a retelling of a plot events previously visited in X-Men: The Last Stand (aka, the Brett Ratner one, aka the black sheep of the X-franchise, but actually containing good stuff and certainly better than X-Men: Origins – Wolverine).
They also rank the entire series best to worst and make room for favourite moments.
So, pop your headphones on and let us X-cite you. Damn, almost made it to the end!
Episode 63 of The Electric Shadows Podcast is a bonus instalment capping off our Night of the Living Dead trilogy.
Those three episodes looked at George A. Romero’s six Dead films, his other movies and the zombie explosion and totaled just under six hours of edited podcast time.
But, that final episode just grazed the cranium rather than putting one in the brain, so our Living Dead series is still biting. Which is a flowery way of saying there is always something else to talk about.
This episode came about after we had recorded those three Dead episodes. A Herculean effort that took eight hours, so thanks to Rob Wallis and Ian Bird for putting up with Rob Daniel’s request that we got it all done in one day.
Post-record, Ian was kicking himself for not discussing Jonathan Swift’s A Modest Proposal. That mouth-wateringly scandalous slice of economic satire from 1729 that remains relevant to this day.
So, the next morning we were all back in front of the microphone for a modest chat, including a discussion of flesh eating throughout the ages, in religion and popular culture. Don’t worry, there are jokes.
We would strongly recommend you listen to the previous three Night of the Living Dead instalments, which are episodes 53, 59 and 62 of The Electric Shadows Podcast. This episode refers to what we discussed there.
A quick note also that this episode was recorded in October 2018. But, as of writing, Rob D still hasn’t seen Overlord.

In episode 62 of The Electric Shadows Podcast we reach the final part of our Night of the Living Dead trilogy. Recorded six hours into an eight hour podcasting marathon, this episode sees our intrepid casters in pod Rob Daniel, Rob Wallis and Ian Bird ever-so slightly punchy.
But, despite the whiff of mania that had descended by that point, the daring trio managed to stay on point. Romero’s second zombie trilogy, Land of…, Diary of… and Survival of the Dead all get their day in court. Surprising to everyone is how much stronger trilogy number two now seems when compared to first release. Although Ian Bird has a dislike for Diary of the Dead he is not shy in sharing…
The discussion also covers Romero’s career between his two zombie trilogies, the now-classic Shaun of the Dead, Zack Snyder’s not-so-classic Dawn of the Dead remake (which was still successful enough to give Romero Land of the Dead), The Walking Dead and recent zombie fare.
Mention also to the sad passing of Joe Pilato, who died three days after we released episode 59, which covered Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead. His Captain Rhodes is one of horror cinema’s most memorable villains, and a performance to be relished over and over. We salute him.

Episode 61 of The Electric Shadows Podcast is an epic discussion of Avengers: Endgame. But, what do the two Robs, our intrepid explorers in pod, make of the final instalment of the Infinity saga?
No spoilers here, and also no spoilers for the film itself until the podcast gets into the spoiler zone. But, there is a massive buffer, so you have more than enough time to turn off your iPhone/Android phone before then. And come back to us when you've seen it. We do give a spoilers for Infinity War, on the basis that a year and several billion dollars later, we figure everyone listening will have seen it by now.
On their travels, the Robs recount the eleven year journey it took to reach this film, and what an achievement it has been. They also look at how Marvel movies have shifted the blockbuster landscape, what the films have got right (and wrong), and Rob D doesn't miss the opportunity to remind Rob W that Ant-Man and the Wasp is a more satisfying film than Infinity War.
Rob W makes very good points about the naming of the final two movies in this first saga. They both look at what might come next and discuss the boffo box office the film is likely to do.

The Electric Shadows Podcast reaches its 60th episode! To celebrate Robs Daniel and Wallis cram in discussions of four releases.
First up, DC’s Shazam! Has the (justice) beleaguered studio finally cracked the code for how they can make superhero films to rival those over at Marvel? The Robs swoop down to deliver their verdict.
They also dig deep into sour ground to ruminate on the latest adaptation of Pet Sematary. Based on the bonkers 1983 Stephen King bestseller, this version features Jason Clarke as the doctor who discovers he has worse things than overly acidic soil on his land. Our intrepid casters in pod reveal why this horror is plagued with unintentional giggles.
Then onto Jordan Peele’s Us, a superior slice of shiversome entertainment, though not also without issues. Saving the least for last, Rob Wallis explains why, though Tim Burton’s Dumbo may be twice the length of the original animated version, it’s no classic.

Episode 59 of The Electric Shadows Podcast is part two in our Night of the Living Dead trilogy. In episode 53, Robs Daniel and Wallis along with special guest Ian Bird took a 50th anniversary look at George A. Romero’s 1968 horror classic.
Now, they emerge from the Night and boldly move through the Dawn into the Day of the Dead. On their travels they discuss why Romero’s original zombie triumvirate continues to hold its place as one of fright cinema’s boldest accomplishments.
They examine how Romero evolved his zombie lore across the next two films. How they reflect the attitudes of the times and remain horribly relevant today. They marvel at the filmmaking, the black humour, Tom Savini’s groundbreaking make-up, and the sharp characterisation.
Rob D effuses his love of Day of the Dead’s Dr. Logan and Richard Liberty’s wonderful performance. If you can’t see the majesty of it, there’s no point in carrying on. There’s no point at all… Everyone loves Captain Rhodes and a generous helping of clips illustrate why.
Our intrepid explorers in pod make room to also look at Romero’s other films between his zombie masterpieces, including his vampire master work Martin and the pulp-brilliance of Creepshow.

Episode 58 of The Electric Shadows Podcast sees Robs Daniel & Wallis delivering their verdict on Captain Marvel. Is it indeed Marvel-lous? Or does the cookie cutter filmmaking bite deep? We won’t spoil the surprises, but let’s just say Brie Larson delivers one of the liveliest performances in the MCU.
The Robs also ponder why it has taken so long for Marvel to deliver a female-led superhero movie, what might be next, and go off on one or two tangents about other franchises. Yes, DC is mentioned.
Rob Daniel also reasons why Ant-Man and The Wasp is a more satisfying movie than Avengers: Infinity War, but admits Captain Marvel has got him finally excited for Endgame. Rob Wallis attempts to hide his contempt at Rob D’s efforts to rehabilitate the critical reputation of the (sorely) maligned Ant-Man and The Wasp.
The ramblings all make sense in the end.
The Oscars may have occurred a week ago, but some review shows are worth the wait. In episode 57 of The Electric Shadows Podcast, Robs Daniel and Wallis deliver their verdict on Bohemian Rhapsody winning most Oscars at this year’s ceremony and Green Book picking up the Best Picture statuette.
Along the way they also discuss Roma, First Man’s consolation prize, past Oscar gaffes and, gasp, the decisions they actually agreed with this year. Trevor Noah’s Mel Gibson joke finds an appreciative audience here, despite being met with stony faces from Tina Fey and Amy Poehler on the night.
Rob D explains why Patrick Willems' YouTube video essay on Musical Biopics is a must-watch.
Space is also made for a brief discussion of Alita: Battle Angel and the female led blockbuster the two Robs will be looking at in episode 58.

In episode 56 of The Electric Shadows Podcast we commemorate the 25th anniversary of Bill Hicks’ death. Rob Daniel and Ian Bird, who are both old enough to remember the shock at discovering the comedian had died of pancreatic cancer aged 32, discuss why Hicks has remained relevant and remembered a quarter of a century later.
Their chat was recorded late one night in Manchester, so it all becomes quite drunken and gigglesome by the time they recall their favourite routines.
But, there’s space before that to run through Hicks’ career, the impact his comedy has made on their lives, and broaden it out to chat about other funny men. Denis Leary, Stewart Lee, Frankie Boyle, Jerry Seinfeld, Lenny Bruce, they’re all here.
As we’re a movies podcast, the Robs Daniel and Wallis debate the merits of the proposed Richard Linklater Hicks biopic. Plus, how to avoid the traps of dreariness most based-on-a-real-life movies tumble into.
We’re excited to welcome Adrian Zak to the podcast. Regular listeners will have heard mention of “our friend Adrian”, and we had to get him on to hear his experiences of seeing Bill perform not once, but twice. We’re jealous, but in a good way.
Finally, we apologise for the indulgent amount of Bill Hicks clips crammed into this episode. But, when you’re paying tribute to one of the all-time masters of stand-up comedy, sometimes you just let the man talk for himself.
Bill Hicks died on 26th February 1994. We still enjoy taking the ride with him.
Rob Daniel & Rob Wallis touch the sore tooth that is this year's Oscar nominations.
They discuss the insanity of nominating Bohemian Rhapsody for Best Picture, and how safe the Best Picture nods are in general. They're happy Spike Lee finally has his Best Director nomination, and acknowledge a few other things the Academy got right.
But, the two Robs mainly lament the omissions. No Best Actor nom for Ethan Hawke in First Reformed? No Mary Poppins Returns in Best Picture? Not a single nod for Mission: Impossible - Fallout?
As Rob Wallis points out, this is the first time the Golden Globes got more nominations right than the Oscars. A sobering state of affairs...
And we haven't even talked about the major omission. What was the brilliant, compassionate, devastating film released in 2018 that has not received a single Oscar nomination?

The film that invented the modern horror film, we look at what made it so radical back in 1968, a year riven with civil riots violence, assassinations and the Vietnam quagmire.
We look at why it has endured, and the copyright foul-ups that inadvertently lit the fuse for zombie apocalypse tales that would explode some forty years later when The Walking Dead became a phenomenon.
Romero's early career in advertising and directing inserts for Mr Roger's Neighborhood. The influence of Richard Matheson's I Am Legend on Romero's fiendishly fine tale of murder and mayhem. The fact that the first zombie in Night of the Living Dead is a running zombie! And also that Romero never thought of his undead flesh-eaters as zombies, naming them ghouls for his directorial debut.
How the filmmakers made a virtue out of budgetary adversity by using old fashioned ingenuity.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of The Dark Knight’s theatrical release, episode 47 of The Electric Shadows Podcast has gone big. Across four hours, Robs Daniel and Wallis and Bat-expert Ian Bird discuss Nolan’s landmark trilogy. Plus, a wider discussion of the Caped Crusader in comic books and on the small screen, both animated and live action.
Our trio delve deep into the Bat cave, covering a range of Bat chat. From Nolan’s career, to the making of the trilogy, Nolan’s influences, the impact of Christian Bale’s Batman, Heath Ledger’s Joker and Tom Hardy’s Bane, and the difficult-to-repeat legacy the films left behind.
Not that the discussion is just a rhapsody. Ian and the Robs discuss some of the brickbats thrown at the trilogy, particularly the divisive The Dark Knight Rises. There’s even disagreement in the discussion. Rob Daniel champions the epic sweep of the third instalment, Ian Bird is unconvinced.

Plus, Josh Brolin as Thanos, a troubled, but unstoppable baddie with superhuman abilities.
One thing that isn't beige is the Robs' podcast chat. Mere minutes in and they're debating the necessity of including the sexual proclivities of Nazi war criminals in biopics about them. Elsewhere the debate covers Sybians (a NSFW Google search item rather than an alien race in the movie), memorable music in Marvel movies and Rob W gets to click his fingers a lot.

The two compare it to the original 1953 version by Henri-Georges Clouzot, how the film predicted our current troubled times, the method in Friedkin's madness and more.

In episode 41 of The Electric Shadows Podcast Robs Daniel & Wallis journey deep into a realms of pop culture and sci-fi when delivering their verdicts on Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One and Alex Garland's Annihilation. In a typically all-encompassing discussion, Rob D explains why he dug the pop-culture geek-gasm of RP1, while Rob W reveals his reservations about Spielberg's latest. Conversely, Rob W talks about why Garland's Annihilation is a masterpiece, and Rob D is the one with the criticisms. Basically, all of human interaction is here.
Other topics include why releasing movies straight to streaming services could mean the end of thought-provoking mid-range cinema. Why Netflix's insistence on squeezing end credits into a tiny-box while forcing something else on you ruins the mood. Episode 39 of The Electric Shadows Podcast is the agony and the ecstasy.
The agony comes from Rob Daniel, who talks (at length) about his ongoing recuperation following surgery after a particularly non-heroic "sports injury".
The ecstasy comes Rob Wallis, who, being sound of body was able to see Black Panther - aka Contender for the Biggest Film of 2018, aka Contender for the Most Culturally Significant Film of 2018, aka The Film You Really Should Have Seen By Now. So Rob W lets Rob D know about all the good stuff he has been missing. Rob D bravely listens without sounding too despondent.
Our intrepid casters in pod then tackle a brace of disappointing Netflix sigh-fi efforts: Mute and The Cloverfield Paradox. Rob W remembers the time Mute director Duncan Jones praised him for his geek knowledge in a Director's Q&A, and both Robs recall how wonderful Moon is.
Amidst all this banter, there is room for a cameo appearance from Rob D's flatmate, Michael, whose severe cold means background coughing makes a fleeting appearance. He also chips in some real words.
In Episode 38 of The Electric Shadows Podcast, Robs Daniel & Wallis provide their take on the 2018 Oscar nominations.
They run through what they agree with - hello Get Out, The Shape of Water, Three Billboards, Lady Bird.
They umm and ahhh over that particular film they really don't like - we mean, seriously, how can Darkest Hour be up for Best Picture when it is not nominated in Best Director or Best Screenplay?
The Robs run through the films that seem to have been snubbed - Wonder Woman, The Disaster Artist and Michael Stuhlbarg for Call Me By Your Name.
They also have fun saying Call Me By Your Name... it'll all make sense in the podcast. Although the pair do become quite punchy running through lists of nominees. Wait to you hear their theory on how the Visual Effects in War for the Planet of the Apes were achieved...

In Episode 37 of The Electric Shadows Podcast, Robs Daniel & Wallis look at one of the best films of the year and a contender for one of the worst.
Impressing them is Martin McDonagh's Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. A dramatic, witty and compassionate tale of a mother's anger at the local police for not finding her daughter's killer, it is a powerhouse of adult storytelling, populated with some of the best characters yet from the man behind In Bruges.
At the other end of the spectrum is Darkest Hour. Joe Wright's film presents Winston Churchill as the eccentric man of the people popular history likes to portray him as. It all amounts to little more than Sunday afternoon TV fluff, until Wright and co present a scene so misjudged and tin-eared it ruins their movie. Predictably, the Robs fight this bad filmmaking on the beaches, they fight it in the air, etc.
They also look at the politics likely to be dominating this year's Academy Awards, and go back to THAT scene from Darkest Hour for one more drubbing.
Robs Daniel & Wallis take a brief look at Star Wars: The Jedi in this pint-sized podcast. Primarily because they wanted to throw their hat into the ring regarding the current fan fury over Rian Johnson's Star Wars movie. We'll do a full review when the Blu-ray comes out in 2018.
So, in a SPOILER FILLED discussion the two run through what impresses, what are legitimate complaints and why it doesn't trash the extended universe. Just because something is different, doesn't mean to say it ruins everything around it...

Sure, it's a mess and clearly the work of two different people. But, it's entertaining and works to right the wrongs of Batman v Superman.
Rob Wallis comes up with a perfect classroom analogy for the current output from Marvel and DC. They also get a chance to do some voice work when discussing a little shonky CGI that was required on a particular cast member.
They also still have issues with Wonder Woman sitting out World War Two, despite this film trying to retcon her absence.

Six months in the making (partially due to the epic length, partially due to Rob D’s inability to get his act together and edit it), episode 25 of The Electric Shadows Podcast is a special looking at Oliver Stone’s 1991 classic, JFK.
Over an epic running time almost matching the duration of the film itself, Rob Daniel, Rob Wallis and special guest Ian Bird dissect the merits and legacy of Stone’s controversial movie.
They also look at the assassination itself, plus it’s impact on popular culture, including the flawed, truth-seeking hero, that eventually led to Warner Bros. bankrolling the movie.
Our intrepid investigators also come up with a new conspiracy theory involving a beloved 1980s filmmaker and a Batman villian. While making room for such pop JFK references as the film Executive Action and that episode of Quantum Leap. They also can’t help liberally quoting the movie’s chewable dialogue.
It’s a big listen for a big film. We like to think it offers some interesting new perspectives on the film, or at least a couple of laughs. Not least at that opening stab at an American accent…
