The Cardinals sweep over the Cubs at Wrigley Field was historic. It may have also served notice that the Cards have gotten tired of chasing the Cubs in the Central race.

Adam Wainwright has been setting the tone on the mound. In his last 4 starts, he's given up a total of 1 earned run in 27 innings. The Cardinals are 12-2 in his last 14 starts. And when it comes to facing off with the Cubs, Wainwright also took the lead with his comments.

The Cardinals are trying to close out a division title, but on Sunday they couldn't close out the game. It was complicated by the fact Carlos Martinez was unavailable. He's dealing with a respiratory issue. It led to a messy ninth along with many pitching questions for the manager.

The Rams' lawsuit with the city of St. Louis continues to drag on. St. Louis city and county are suing over how the Rams left town for Los Angeles. The Missouri Court of Appeals has denied the Rams request to settle the lawsuit in arbitration. The Missouri Supreme Court handed down the same ruling. But the Rams are not satisfied. They are now asking the U.S. Supreme Court to look into their case.

The Cardinals promised their defense would be better; and it is. In 2018, they had the most errors in major league baseball. In 2019, they have the fewest. Sure, errors don’t tell the whole story, but this team passes the eye test.

Mike Shildt has been the Cardinals manager for over a year, but we still don't know a ton about his persona. Seems to be a rather mild-mannered nice guy, but lately he's been flexing his muscles. Making the tough call whether it involves a veteran coach or a veteran pitcher.

St. Louis’ new MLS franchise still needs a name. The league has said fan input is encouraged. The XFL, though? The St. Louis team has a name. And fan input has been pouring in; only, it’s too late. Keep in mind, the XFL owns the local football team. This is their deal. And that new name? The BattleHawks. One word; two capital letters. The team slogan: “cleared to engage.” Problem is it seems like some fans are enraged. A common complaint? It sounds too much like Blackhawks; and those guys are not too popular around here.

Soccer fans partied like they've been waiting for awhile, because they have. Mayor Slay first kicked the MLS tires back in 2006. The announcement served as a reminder what the Taylor family vision has been for years. It's the subject of this TKO (The Kilcoyne Opinion).

Dakota Hudson was bummed. I would've been too. The Cardinals no-hitter drought continues. The Cardinals haven't had one since 2001 when Bud Smith did it in September of that year against the Padres. But with 111 pitches in the 7th inning I don't think there was anyway Hudson was going the distance, so Mike Shildt did the right thing.

Just one team. But already a million or so suggestions for the team name for the new MLS team heading to St. Louis. Quite a few hope to salute a former St. Louis Rams owner named Enos. TKO (The Kilcoyne Opinion) says all of this is good news because it means we've learned our lesson.

The Cardinals were saved on Sunday by a player who delivered 5 RBI. For the season, he's 8 for 22 with 3 homers. It's just that you don't see him very often. Lane Thomas is the subject of the latest TKO (The Kilcoyne Opinion) presented by Suntrup Ford.

The Cardinals have an emerging ace in Jack Flaherty. The timing is great because of the playoff push, but the Cardinals are not cashing in on his winnable starts. In his last six starts, Flaherty has only given up four earned runs. In those games the Cardinals have won 3 and lost 3.

The Cubs were on pace to win 88 games. And that was before Jon Lester gave up 10 earned runs on Tuesday night. It's a year where the National League Central is wide open. The Division title is there for the taking. TKO (The Kilcoyne Opinion) wonders why the front office isn't ready to pounce.

ST. LOUIS – You think it’s tough being a Mizzou fan? Try being a Mizzou player at SEC Media Day.
Quarterback Kelly Bryant was peppered with questions. The theme was the same: why’d you transfer from Clemson to Mizzou of all places?
It wasn't long after Bryant arrived in Columbia that NCAA sanctions also arrived. Coach Barry Odom said Bryant could leave if he wanted but the quarterback said he was staying.
There won't be a Kelly Bryant era at Mizzou. He’s only there for one season. However, he did go 16-2 as a starter at Clemson.
And it’s giving even skittish Mizzou fans the hope this could be a special season for the Tigers.

Would you take a guaranteed spot in the NL Wild Card Game right now or roll the dice and hope for a Central Division title? Made your decision? Well, think about this: in the current National League standings, that one-game wild card would pit the Cardinals against the Washington Nationals.
And the Nationals have a pretty option to pitch in a winner-take-all game: 7-time All-Star and 3-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer.
There’s still a long way to go in the season – 60-plus games, in fact. The Nationals could fall off, the Cardinals could take off; but the bar in St. Louis needs to be high. Not just division titles but a World Series win. So the correct answer is – you go for the division win.

Here’s a sports riddle for you: if somebody offers you $111 million, do you hesitate to sign the contract? The answer, believe it or not, is yes.
Welcome to the wonderful world of former Chaminade standout Bradley Beal. He’s still under contract to the Wizards for a couple more years but the team would like to lock him up to a long-term deal.
Washington’s general manager said they’ll offer the full max extension allowed – 3 years, $111 million. The comes out to $37 million per season. Beal’s agent, who was also Kurt Warner’s agent, said they’ll need some time to consider the offer.
Here’s why. If Beal has a big year and makes the All-NBA Team, come next summer he could be eligible for a different deal. One that could be worth $254 million over 5 years.
And good for Beal, who has always handled himself well. But that NBA money is absolutely crazy! A quarter of a billion dollars at stake for a man who just turned 26.
