This week Matt Ritter hosts solo because we scored a great interview with TV host Darren Kavinoky. Darren Kavinoky is the creator and host of the hit TV show, "Deadly Sins", which airs on Investigation Discovery. He is also a certified interventionist, attorney and legal analyst, and “misbehavior” expert who appears constantly on the Today show, The View, Entertainment Tonight, The Insider, Dr. Phil, Dr. Drew, CNN, HLN, Fox News, and countless other TV and radio shows.
Matt and Darren discuss his background, it's a truly inspirational tale filled with lots of ups and downs. If you're a struggling law student and you think grades are the be all and end all, think again.
More important than his professional accomplishments is the compelling inspirational tale he has to share.
Once an overweight kid from a dysfunctional family, he went on to suffer from his own addictions which plagued him for many years. To call his downward spiral a “bottom” is a gross understatement; Darren lost everything. But in May of 2000, after two decades of battling his demons, Darren experienced a pivotal moment. Since then, the kid who wore “husky” sized Toughskins has completed seven Ironman triathlons. The bankrupt attorney who swept floors in a furniture store created several multi-million dollar businesses. As an interventionist and as a speaker, Darren is now obsessed with helping people and organizations produce their own pivotal moments that are just as powerful.
Darren is a true “misbehavior” expert – his own and other people’s! This has given Darren a unique and refreshing perspective. He has the innate ability to authentically connect with people from all walks of life, from white collar to blue collar to no collar, a talent that has resulted in rave reviews from jurors, TV producers, and live audiences alike.
Darren is a speaker's speaker. He inspires audiences everywhere, and constantly gets glowing reviews. He’s described as a "dynamic, polished, inspiring, funny, and most importantly authentic" speaker. Besides his signature keynote, Be The Billboard, he is also asked to speak on topics as varied as media, negotiation, pop culture, branding, and of course, anything having to do with law.
Matt and Darren finish by getting in depth on the Donald Sterling issue, which Darren had a very interesting take on that you don't want to miss!

This week, Matt (@mattritter1) and Kevin (@KevinIsrael) man the podcast and give us their take on a number of absurd legal stories, From unmanned drones, to a town in Georgia requiring mandatory gun ownership, to the use of a 3D printer to create a skull, the guys bring the laughs. Also a scary story about the shrinking size of otter genitalia that may not bode well for humans.
Matt also shares some tales about his new puppy, Olive, who will soon attempt to usurp Ivan's power as the group mascot!
Kevin then does a splendid interview with James Daily, who actually gets deep into the legal issues of the superhero realm. It's an incredible interview.

The episode begins with Alex and J-L discussing a huge week in the Supreme Court - Same Sex Marriage, the Voting Rights Act, 4th Amendment surveillance issues and most importantly Alex showing his age in not knowing what an "app" is.
After some un-PC talk from Alex and J-L, Matt conducts a great, insightful interview with Jeff Richardson, a New Orleans-based lawer whose blog, iPhone JD, just happens to have been rated the ABA's #1 legal technology blog... twice. It is a great talk about how the iPhone and iPad can enhance your legal work.
J-L and Alex then wrap up the show with a disheartened edition of Good Cop-Bad Cop and re-pitch a great Twitter contest for listeners to win a free t-shirt.

Alex and J-L are back this week with what might be the best episode yet of the podcast. With the help of the Black Eyed Peas they start with the story of Warren Hill, the mentally retarded man about to be executed by the state of Georgia. The second story continues the shame of J-L's alma mater of Georgetown Law, as a graduate of the law school has been found guilty of lying about everything trying to get a job in England. The final story covers Chubby Checker's lawsuit againt Hewlett Packard regarding a penis-size app known as the "Chubby Checker."
The guys then interview Professor Brian Tamanaha of Washington University who has written the book Failing Law Schools, about the myriad of problems facing and created by law schools.
The guys then end with Good Cop Bad Cop with a new contest for a free t-shirt.

This week, Comedians at Law hit the road for a southern swing through Nashville and Atlanta. Amazingly the Atlanta Punchline is owned by a fellow lawyer and comedian, Jamie Bendall..who by the way, is a hilarious comedians that superbly emcee'd our show in Atlanta.Matt, J-L and Alex sat down in his studio which is in the back of his law office...which is literally 30 feet from the club, to talk shop. This ended up mostly being a discussion about the state of comedy and it's future, with a little bit of law sprinkled in. Hugely insightful for any comedians who want to know about the business and very entertaining for our lawyer followers who want to know how to balance their legal careers with a ton of other interesting things!

Then Matt takes over to interview Alison Monahan, the founder of the popular website, The Girls Guide to Law School whose tagline is: Get In, Get Through, Stay You. She explains how she came up with this idea, how she felt women faced a lot of pressures in law school and deal with them differently from their male counterparts and therefore needed a resource like this site. We also discuss her take on firm life for women and the balancing of family vs. trying to become a female partner. She also has sites LawSchoolToolBox.com and BarExamToolbox.com. She also lets us know about an upcoming conference in San Francisco...it's open to men, so fellas, the ratio will probably definitely be in your favor!

This week Kevin Israel and Matt Ritter steer the ship. We discuss the week's crazy legal stories. A professor at one of our favorite law schools, Ohio Northern, gets in hot water for getting too friendly with one of his law students. We also touch on the law firm in Houston that is paying their 1st years the equivalent of 414k in NY. We debate which cities we would live in if they paid that kind of money. Found out how Kevin feels about working as a lawyer in Vegas, Minneapolis, Detroit, Cleveland or KC. We also get into why the White House rejected a petition to build a real life Death Star.
Then, Matt is joined by top sports lawyer and writer for Forbes, Darren Heitner. He joins us to discuss all things sports law. How he got his start at such a young age, some of the challenges of being a sports lawyer and how his age is now a big benefit. He also tells us things like the going rate for sponsor money in the bowling game and tells us that managing expectations and having a low key personality are the best traits in dealing with high profile clients. We discuss his potential future in politics and how 20 years from now when he's president, Comedians at Law can say we were there at the beginning! This week hosts Matt Ritter and Kevin Israel take a break from the jokes to express our grief over the Connecticut shooting and try to have a serious dialogue about the issues of gun control and mental health awareness in this country.

He and Matt share war stories from document review, he breaks down the world of commercial acting for the listeners and admits that although he looks just like him, he is NOT the discount double check guy.
