I chatted with Hetty Appleton-Miles Stylist at Burberry who moved to London from Australia 7 years ago.

She’s worked on many amazing campaigns and projects including the recent fashion show in London, the first one of Daniel Lee. She was also involved in the styling of the new rebranding campaign of the new creative direction given by Daniel Lee who replaced Riccardo Tisci at Burberry last fall.

In this podcast episode, we chatted about what happens inside a fashion company when the creative director changes as well as her experience with the fashion show.

Hetty’s main job as Stylist for the British brand is styling the looks for the Burberry website and some digital campaigns: from developing the concept with her director to styling up to overseeing the looks on set. Like any other person working in fashion, also her working days are never the same.

From this chat, you’ll hear how she got started in the industry and you’ll be surprised to learn that she started with no formal university education. Although in the podcast she says that educating yourself outside of a traditional degree is fundamental. indeed she took several online courses to understand more about fashion. I asked her about her tips for becoming a good stylist and if this is a career you want to pursue, you will be motivated to know that she believes that styling is a skill that you can practice through work experience and that you can acquire even if right now maybe you believe you might not have it. We also chatted about her recent work trip to Paris, her favorite shows of the season as well as how she separates her personal style from her styling work.

Georgia Rhodes is a final-year student with already a lot of big fashion magazines on her resume including Marie Claire, Glamour, Elle, Harpers Bazaar, CR Fashion Book.

I met Georgia in 2020 as she is one of the students of my online course Break into the fashion industry + The Fashion Writer Accelerator and in the past 3 years, she has achieved so much. I am really proud of her and happy to have been part of her professional journey and excited to share this interview with her to know where she is today.

After an experience with a fashion marketing internship, she realized that writing was what she preferred doing.

She felt the pressure of getting an internship for her placement year especially when she realized that applying to fashion is different from applying to any other job. It was a nerve-wracking experience as her uni didn’t really guide her on how to approach practically the job search process. She then stumbled upon the course Break into the fashion industry and after being encouraged by her grandparents to invest in her career, she enrolled and finally started seeing the first results.

Her first experience with a magazine was at Marie Claire. She was one of the students to get the internship at Marie Claire in partnership with us exclusive for students of our academy. She then went up from there landing one internship after another at other major publications including Glamour, Elle, CR Fashion Book, Harpers Bazaar…

Today, together with writing her dissertation, she is working as a freelance for the luxury online retailer Farfetch as Content Writer as well as writing for CR Fashion Book.

In this episode we chatted everything about:

  • how she realized that fashion was made for her and why ended up studying fashion marketing
  • how she understood she prefers writing over marketing
  • fears and doubts about getting the first internship
  • how she managed unpaid internships
  • how she landed her first internship at Marie Claire
  • the strategy she used to land multiple internships at Glamour, Elle, Cr Fashion Book without living in a fashion capital
  • how she stays organized to manage her fashion jobs remotely
  • how she juggles studying with her current role at Farfetch and CR Fashion Book
  • the difference between writing for magazines and being the Content Writer for Farfetch
  • the tools she uses in her job
  • and her advice to land a job in fashion

I get asked often what skills you need to work in fashion. There isn’t just one answer here because skills change with each position and company.

However there is one that is common among 90% of the fashion jobs: Microsoft Excel.

Wait, what? Why?

When we think about the fashion industry we see fashion shows, clothes, shoes, magazines… So it's hard to envision fashion workers doing anything that doesn’t include designing clothes, styling looks, and attending appointments, and fashion events.. you are unlikely to imagine them seated at their desks just like any other employee from any other industry. But the reality is that those who work in fashion spend a lot of, the majority of their time actually, on a laptop answering emails and planning and making analyses on Excel sheets.

So if you had no idea that MS Excel is such an important skill in fashion and why then tune in as you'll learn precious insights that will boost your job search and career in this industry

not all of us already have the perfect plan for our career from a young age.

So what happens if you have just realized you want to work in fashion but you didn't go to a fashion school?

Or what if fashion has always been a passion of yours but you just opted for a more generic degree like economics and now you want to follow your passion and break into this industry?

Contrary to popular belief you can work in fashion whatever you studied.

In this episode I'll share what in particular you can do, so the jobs you can get in fashion if you studied economics and what is the skill you should develop to be more marketable for jobs.

I remember when I had to write my first resume. I was about to graduate in management engineering, I opened a Word document and I stared in front of it for a while looking at an empty page.

I was worried that I couldn’t add anything relevant and so I was thinking: “why would companies want to hire me when they will for sure receive other applications from people with more experience or even better schools?”

Fast forward 10 years later, as a fashion career coach, I’ve learned many things and I know that while it’s normal to have those fears, they were actually living more in my head.

In fact, I broke into fashion with an internship at a top company: Alexander McQueen in the ecommerce department, despite I was still that girl with:

  • a degree in management engineering
  • no connections
  • not born and raised in a fashion capital
  • without previous experience in fashion

So yes, it’s absolutely possible to get into fashion even if you have no experience yet (if you think about it’s quite logical, right? Or how would everyone else, including Anna Wintour have done?)

So if you are like me 10 years ago looking to:

  • write your first resume to apply for your first job in fashion
  • or you already have a resume but you are not getting responses from companies

then tune in to listen to the 6 steps. Join me tomorrow June 8th, 6:30pm CET / 12:30pm EST for the only LIVE WORKSHOP of the year: The fashion resume party where we will build together your CV/resume live on Zoom > https://glamobserver.com/resume-live-class/

Are your job applications falling through the craps?

While there could be many reasons why your job applications are not working, your resume is for sure a significant decision-maker for recruiters. You might not be getting the job because of resume mistakes that will prevent your application to go to the next steps.

A recruiter spends on average 3 seconds to decide whether your resume deserves a chance or if it’s better to move on to the next one.

On average 500 resumes are submitted for the same fashion job/internship.

This means that most of the resumes are not read.

Tune in to discover what are the most common resume mistakes made in fashion so you will stop making them.

Want to finally build an irresistible resume that fashion companies will love even if you have no experience?

We all know Anna Wintour as the iconic editor-in-chief of Vogue. You might recognize her for the bob cut, her black glasses and her floral dresses.

But she's not only a strong leader with an extraordinary work ethic, and she's neither so cold in reality.

I've been fascinated by Anna Wintour for a long time and if you have read my book Your Fashion Dream Plan you know that there is an illustration as well as a chapter with her name. So I was very excited to sit down with Amy Odell who has just published her book Anna the biography.

Amy has built up Anna Wintour's story by interviewing more than 250 people over the past 3 years.

In this podcast episode we chatted about Anna Wintour:

  • why she is so powerful in fashion
  • why do people beyond fashion ask for her opinion (including Serena Williams and Bradley Cooper when he had to cast for A star is born).
  • if there is Vogue without Anna Wintour
  • who could replace her
  • and if the next editor in chief will be as influential as Anna

Full of practical details from the beginning to the very last minute: SPOILER if you write for a publication such as Vogue your article's title will be “A timeless chic elegant piece to have in your wardrobe”, while for Cosmopolitan you might use a title more friendly “Hi, you need this in your wardrobe Rn” (Rn=right now, abbreviations are certainly not something you’d use for Vogue)!

But you'll also learn things such as:

  • Do you have zero experience? What's best? Internships or freelancing?
  • Did you know that fashion journalism is made of writing plus styling?

Tune in to listen to these insider tips and things about fashion journalism.

When it comes to working in the fashion industry you might believe that the sense of style is the most in-demand skill, but in many careers of the industry, this is not even a requirement!

Want to know which is the most frequently requested skill in the fashion industry? Microsoft Excel!

Yes, I was surprised too when almost a decade ago I learned during my first fashion internship at Alexander McQueen that anyone in fashion uses this tool on a daily basis AND in each role.

Many who are familiar with the different careers in fashion might believe that this is a tool used mainly by the most analytical roles of the industry such as buyers or merchandisers, but ANYONE including stylists, designers, PR specialists... use Excel.

Hint. this is not just a tool used to analyze numbers. And it's not just used by seniors but interns as well!

Tune in and listen to this short but useful episode to learn how people in fashion use Excel and why you need to learn it if you want to work in fashion this year.

“So, why do you want to get the job?” “Because I love fashion…. ” Clichè

Well, this is not quite the right answer and indeed, in some cases, it may sound superficial and wrong if behind it is not supported by the knowledge of the fashion industry. Let me explain.

Everyone can say I love fashion. Even your cousin who loves to dress extravagantly, post outfits on social media, or go shopping. For you who want to work in fashion instead, I love fashion must mean something else. You must have an awareness and knowledge of the industry. You are not only a fashion enthusiast, you are a fashion professional or you are about to become one, and there is a big difference.

Do you know what the most successful fashion designers, marketers, editors, art directors, stylists, PR, buyers… have in common?

Yes of course they all have a strong passion for the fashion industry. But they don’t just say I love fashion, they know about fashion.

They need to look at what happened in the past, in their archives to create the future. So it doesn’t matter if every day you read the latest news about fashion or you are always updated about your favorite brands on Instagram if you don’t know the history of fashion, how this industry works and how everything has come to become what it’s today, you’ll still have some important missing pieces that can affect your work and career in fashion. Instead of saying I love fashion you should really learn fashion, because more knowledge = more opportunities. So let me share with you in practice what opportunities knowing about fashion can unlock you and the 7 reasons why you need to know about fashion to be successful in this industry.

In 2021 and with 500 people who apply for the same job, is an outstanding resume enough to get a job in fashion? Sure it is a fantastic starting point and in many cases is enough, but if you are not seeing results and in general to boost your chances to get a job, a resume is not enough.

Tune in to listen to this episode where I share 4 other things you need to get a job in fashion.

Have you ever felt not enough and intimidated to apply for a job in fashion?

This episode is for you.

If you’ve been following me for a while now you probably have heard me say many times "You are enough to work in the fashion industry", it doesn’t matter if you don’t have experience already, you didn’t study fashion or you don’t have connections already. You can be part of the fashion industry. I talk about this so much almost everyday that I even published a book on this and actually the first draft titlewas you are enough but then we opted for Your fashion (dream) plan. In my book I do talk about self-confidence as the only real skill you need to get a job in fashion because once you master this, you can achieve anything else you lack and everything you want.

But since you’ve heard me saying so many times things such as you are enough, feel the fear and send those emails anyway, I wanted to bring you a story and the experience of someone else that I’m sure will inspire you.

In this episode, I chat with Jennifer Savin features editor at cosmopolitan. She would not be in this position today if years ago she listened to the voices in her head that said you are not enough, it’s too competitive you can’t make it, so don’t apply for that job.

Luckily a friend of hers pushed her to apply for that internship at Cosmopolitan, and despite she didn’t believe in herself, she did it and got the job and has never left since then.

We hope that this episode will be your friend that pushes you to apply and send emails despite you might feel a bit intimidated and scared.

By listening to this episode You’ll learn:
how to overcome the fear of not being enough and believing more in yourself to get what you want. We don’t cover lack of self-confidence only during your job search but we do also talk about what you should expect from your first week at the office when you feel so scared, comparing yourself to other people from the industry on Instagram, imposter syndrome, and putting yourself out there if you are an aspiring journalist and you might not feel confident about pitching your ideas and articles.

A great episode full of tips from the first minute to the last one that I’m sure will inspire you!

Enjoy it!

Emily Ferguson is the eCommerce Director at Marie Claire. Her entry into the fashion industry is not the typical one of those who want to get into the glamourous industry. She studied international business, finance and economics and started her career in banking where she stayed for six years but with an exit strategy since the beginning. She went into banking in fact to save up some money to launch her own business and also pay for her student loan.

When she had enough money saved, she took the leap and started her own eCommerce fashion affiliate business. She ran her business for three years until the website design company she was working with went bust and one of the freelancers took the copyright. The quote to relaunch her business was 3x times higher, so that was the moment when she knew in her heart that it was not the right time to run her own business again and made the brave decision to step back and went to work for a fashion startup.

Her own fashion business was her only experience in fashion, all her previous experience and what she studied were totally unrelated to fashion but she leveraged her own fashion company perfectly to land a job in other fashion companies. You could try this option too: entering fashion by leveraging your fashion business and then switch to the fashion corporate world.

She then went to work at the Telegraph and eventually landed at Marie Claire: “Skills are always transferable even across industries...you’ve got to be more relaxed with your career. follow your passion, not your money. "

In this episode, we also talk about what her job is about, what she looks for when hiring new people at the fashion magazine, her latest project the Marie Claire Beauty Edit and the future of the business of fashion publications. Enjoy it!

49 Today I’m talking to Claudia Saadeh fashion stylist who has worked at Net-a-Porter for 5 years now. In this episode, we discuss how she changed her university path in nutrition after one year, when she realized it was not made for her, to go into fashion, how she understood that styling was made for her, how to stand out when applying for jobs in this competitive industry, how she turned a one-month internship into a full-time job at Net-a-Porter and what’s like applying for a different job but within the same company, so I asked her if her application process was the same like applying for a new company or it was something different. We also talked about why you should not stick to a job title when looking for a job because she’s a stylist but she deals with other things as well in the company that she describes in the episode and how she posted on Instagram that she was looking for an assistant and ended up hiring a girl whose Instagram aesthetic was in line with hers.Register to my FREE ONLINE MASTERCLASS on 4 proven strategies to get a job in fashion https://glamobserver.easywebinar.live/event-registration-8Questions? email me at giada@glamobserver.comWant more fashion job tips? visit www.glamobserver.com
