Intuitive Eating, Breaking Free From Diet Culture and Weight Stigma. A live chat with @evelyntribole.
Evelyn Tribole is an anti-diet dietitian and co-author of Intuitive Eating, a framework based upon 10 principles that teach us how to fuel our body from a place of self-compassion, rather than with coercive rules and strict dieting agendas.
We’re chatting about how dancers can benefit from the intuitive approach and how, as an industry, we can continue to challenge the stigmas of weight, body aesthetics, and eating behaviors.
Fun fact: Evelyn’s athletic background qualified her for the Olympic Trials in the first women’s marathon in 1984.

Advertisements surrounding dietary supplements often come packaged with a glorified means of wellness, further enticing us into purchasing. The abundant and undeniably clever marketing tactics of the supplement industry illustrates a story of questionable promises to “fix,” “correct,” and/or “prevent” nutrient deficiencies.
While supplements may be medically necessary for certain populations or those following restricted diets (like veganism), a well-planned and food-first approach is key to a healthy lifestyle.
Before deciding whether or not you can benefit from a supplement, grab more insights from this article and take the FREE 3-day crash course about nutrients for dancers.

Curious about food freedom but not sure where to start?
Intuitive eating a non-diet approach that teaches you how to have a healthy relationship with food and your body. The approach encompasses ten principles that address rejecting the dieting mentality set forth by our culture, building body awareness towards our intuitive feelings of hunger, fullness, and satisfaction, challenging food rules and body beliefs, allowing for unconditional permission to eat without guilt or shame, and learning how to incorporate nutrition science and joyful movement into a balanced lifestyle. Intuitive eating helps you learn how to make choices surrounding food and exercise based on your body’s signals. The focus is not on body weight goals, health rules, or caloric goals. Instead of making food choices based on what’s “good” or “healthy”, you will learn what foods satisfy you and make you feel good both mentally and physically. You learn how to build trust with yourself around “tempting” foods that either you or society has built fear against.

Whether you call it “overeating” or “binge eating,” you may be familiar with the experience of eating to the point of physical discomfort. It’s important to realize, however, that “overeating” and “binge eating” are different.
Bottom line? Eating past fullness can result from a variety of reasons, and before we discuss how to stop “overeating,” we should first identify why you’re “overeating.”
Realize that your tendency to “overeat” is a natural response to food restrictions, whether intentional or unintentional. To stop “overeating,” let’s discuss my 3 top tips for initiating behavioral change.

Weight loss is very much at the forefront of our culture, which is unfortunately encompassed by aesthetic ideals. For at least a century, weight loss has driven the billion-dollar industry we know to be “health and wellness.” It’s understandable when a dancer comes to me with the presumed goal to lose weight; I’d be naive to think otherwise.
First, I ask that you trust me. Together, we can work to equip you with a lifestyle that’s both sustainable and enjoyable. Your goal, as of now, should not be a number on the scale. Rather, it should be a feeling: a feeling of strength, longlasting energy, and confidence in both your body and in your food choices.
Learning how to reconnect with your innate feelings of hunger (and fullness), is an important component to a balanced lifestyle. Though not always practical, especially if you’re recovering from a history of eating disorders or simply navigating a hectic schedule, listening to your body’s mealtime cues is a critical skill. Therefore, let’s discuss 3 ways to reconnect with your innate hunger and fullness. Hungry for more? Read about it on the blog: https://dancenutrition.com/hunger-scale/

With gruesome dance training schedules, it is important to eat enough throughout the day. While nutritional needs are dependent on the dancer, most dancers benefit from a daily menu that includes at least 3 meals and 2 snacks. When possible, opt for foods that make you feel good. Include nutrient-dense options to sustain metabolic demands while supplying energy for your dancing. When a busy schedule makes mealtimes impractical, choose convenient snacks that are balanced among all three macronutrients.

How many calories should a dancer be eating?
From my decade of experience, I can confidently say that many dancers (and athletes, for the most part) underestimate their calorie needs. Since calories provide the energy needed to not only perform but also sustain basic metabolic functioning, then eating too few calories risks injury and nutrient deficiencies. And because calories are a widely confusing and sometimes misguided topic, I want to cover a few common questions.

Gentle nutrition, the tenth principle of Intuitive Eating, is about making food choices that support your mind-body connection. It enables you to make choices that help you feel good physically, fuel you energetically, and satisfy you mentally. It encompasses the idea of eating a nourishing salad for lunch and adding the dressing guilt-free. It also involves eating the chocolate chip cookie because you want it and stopping when feeling full because you’re satisfied. Gentle nutrition allows us to apply the fundamentals of nutrition science in a non-obsessive way. Though we aim to honor what our body needs at any given time, we can learn how to use some external cues, like a flexible meal plan or the nutrition facts label, in a way that is helpful and not restraining. Today's episode focuses on using the labels in a non-obsessive way. Building a healthy relationship with food will give you the confidence to make choices from a place of empowerment, not restriction.

Learning how to eat intuitively doesn’t mean that we simply open the gates and let “all the foods” flood in. That can be overwhelming and scary! Furthermore, this approach does not dictate a one-size-fits-all “framework.” This is because individual dancer health is not one-size-fits-all. While some might be ready to rebuild trust with many foods, others are not yet ready to tackle this. And that is okay! The process of Intuitive Eating works with you no matter how long it takes to rebuild that trust. If you’re ready to test the waters without diving headfirst, I’m walking you through my simple approach to finally break those restrictive rules!

Many dancers receive unfortunate messages from teachers, peers, directors, ads, and social media that they’re “too tall”, “too short”, “too curvy”, “too muscular”, etc. Examples abound of dancers ignoring these labels and finding their place in the dance world, yet these messages often do impact how dancers see themselves and their bodies.
Today we're chatting about 5 tips for dancers to build a better body image. These tips are provided by Catherine Drury, a licensed psychotherapist who specializes in supporting dancers through injury, stress, burnout, and career change.
