Rachael Harms Mahlandt is passionate about creating Sidewalk Joy - adding bright spots of whimsy to her city through creative art installations. Sidewalk Joy spots are free, curated public galleries, exchanges and displays, often installed in front yards, along a sidewalk fence, or on the side of a building. Her first project was creating a dinosaur-themed diorama (a ‘Dinorama’), which then led to a dino exchange, a micro book swap, an Air Bee N Bee, micro parks, a mug exchange, and more.
Building on the success of the Portland Sidewalk Joy map she co-created, Rachael recently launched a Worldwide Sidewalk Joy map, highlighting hundreds of projects (and growing!). She loves the community connections that happen through Sidewalk Joy spots and openly shares her own knowledge to help other people get started.

David Gilliver is multi-talented, sharing his creativity as a light painter and miniature artist. His works are both entertaining and thought-provoking in both their composition and subject matter.
To create light paintings, he uses long-exposure photography techniques under the darkness of night. And his ‘Little People’ and ‘Toys’ macro photography series depict captivating scenes using miniature people and items to tell stories and offer social commentaries.
He has been recognized with awards at the British Photography Awards and earned a degree in Fine Art Photography from the Glasgow School of Art. He also shares his knowledge through workshops and e-books so other people can join in the fun too.

MAESTRO is a Spanish artist who divides his time between the eastern coast of Spain and the western coast of the United States. He studied, trained and developed a professional practice as an architect and designer before beginning his artistic career.
After immigrating to the United States, MAESTRO picked up a phone with a minimal data plan. The images on his screen often failed to load and he found himself intrigued by his own frustration. Over the following months, while working to rebuild his career as an architect in California, MAESTRO began to draw pixels, inspired by the not-quite-finished state of images he had been seeing on his phone.
Within months, he was accepted into the Santa Barbara Art Association and over the next three years he began to cultivate a loyal social media following and establish himself as a presence at respected art galleries. His first solo exhibition, “LOADING” recently opened at the HOMME Gallery in Washington D.C.

Simon Arizpe is an award-winning pop-up book designer, paper engineer and illustrator based in Brooklyn, NY. He’s a graduate of The Pratt Institute, has worked in the field of pop-up book design for over 20 years and was recently an artist-in-residence at Zion National Park.
He’s designed more than 35 pop-up books to date and works on every aspect of the process, from concept to publication. His book, Stranger Things: The Ultimate Pop-Up Book, is a #1 best seller, and the three dimensional pop-up spreads he created for the Keith Haring Pop-Up Book celebrate the artist’s iconic artwork. His innovative flexagon book, THE WiLD POPUP, allows the reader to interact with the story in a whole new way.
He received the Meggendorfer Prize, the highest honour in pop-up book design, as well as awards from the Society of Illustrators and the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art. Sammie Aplin works in the healthcare field but a few years ago, in her free time, she began to do daily beach clean-ups in her community. She noticed there was a lot of plastic litter on the shore and wanted to do something about it, viewing this waste as a resource. Before long, her creative mind saw a way to give these items a second life in thought-provoking, eye-catching, structured, yet whimsical artworks.
Her pieces include colour-themed layouts made up of a wide variety of plastic trash that she’s collected over the years. If you look closely you will spot treasures such as plastic beach toys, bottle caps, charms, cutlery, jewellery, containers and packaging.
Through her creative artworks, she’s supported environmental conservation causes and recently won the People’s Choice award at an exhibition at the Sussex Contemporary Art Gallery.

Kristy Gordon is a Canadian-born artist living in New York City who is an accomplished painter, teacher and writer. Her work has been widely exhibited and her paintings hang in more than 600 collections worldwide.

After collecting thousands of colourful bottle caps over several years, Jeff Meszaros had a brilliant idea - he could create a mosaic using these unconventional art supplies. Through trial and error, Jeff developed techniques to flatten and layer the caps in a unique way, allowing him to create textured portraits and images that also include 'easter eggs' that can be found when they’re viewed up close.
He’s now created over 150 mosaic portraits featuring well-known people including David Bowie, Harry Styles, Anthony Bourdain, Dolly Parton, Michael Jordan, Elvis and Freddie Mercury.
Thanks to Jeff’s work, over 350,000 bottle caps have been diverted from the landfill and he hopes his artwork inspires other creatives to think of ways to upcycle single-use items into high-value works of art.

Jayce Hall is a micrography word artist, drawing portraits using only combinations of letters that he repeats hundreds, or even thousands, of times. By precisely controlling the size of the letters he hand draws, as well as their spacing, density, and intensity of colour, he can make a portrait magically emerge out of the characters on the canvas.

Dylan Sadiq is known as the College Cuber and he is a proud first-generation college graduate who earned a biomedical engineering degree from Rutgers University. Jeremy Booth built a successful career as a digital illustrator, working with some of the biggest brands in the world. Greg Mike is a contemporary artist known for his signature characters, bold street art, mural paintings and Larry Loudmouf icon that blend intensely colourful designs with surrealist pop culture. His artistic mantra is “Live Life Loud”.
Based in Atlanta, Greg is also the founder and curator of ABV Gallery which focuses on the New Contemporary movement, exhibiting over 500 emerging and established artists since it was established. It has become a cornerstone of Atlanta's thriving art community, showcasing works of art that challenge and inspire visitors. And this year is a big one for the gallery - in September the gallery and event space’s newly renovated, 8500 square feet location opens in the heart of East Atlanta Village.

Marcella Young grew up participating in the performing arts, studying literature and cultivating a love of storytelling. But over time, she became less involved in that world as she built a successful career in an entirely different field. But still… that pull towards performing was always there.
She decided to challenge herself several years ago by signing up for an improv class at the iconic Second City. Since then, she’s taken more classes, worked on her special skills and began auditioning for acting roles. She’s now acted in multiple television shows and movies and she’s only getting started.

Janel Hawkins is living her dream by creating awe-inspiring sand sculptures that redefine what is possible in this temporary medium. Her creations dot the beaches of the Gulf Coast in the United States, bringing joy to those lucky enough to stumble upon them before they disappear forever.
Janel has made sand sculptures in many different shapes - from NASA rockets, to armadillos, ghosts, dragons, dolphins, hearts, as well as, of course, elaborate castles.
She loves what she does so much that she created Sand Castle University and shares her knowledge and passion with people of all ages and skill levels through classes and workshops. Being so connected to her community, Janel also uses her talents to host fundraisers such as the Sandcastle Shindig: Charity Sandcastle Building Contest.

Karlee Porter is a creative quilter who loves everything about what is possible with this art form. In addition to valuing traditional approaches, Karlee has also developed brand new techniques and shares her skills and talents through workshops, online classes, quilting patterns, and her own book series.
She invented graffiti quilting, a free motion quilting method where you take many different elements and motifs and combine them together into one unified quilt. This year is the 10th anniversary of her first Graffiti Quilting book being published and she’s celebrating by creating a new, expanded edition to share her latest ideas and designs.
Karlee also founded Honest Fabric, a printing collective that specializes in custom printed, large format quilt tops. It was created based on three core principles regarding how they work with designers, methods of sourcing and environmental responsibility.

Ernesto Lemke uses LEGO® bricks to create portraits using the unique brickpainting technique he developed. Incredibly, he makes these brick paintings without the use of software - he uses only his painter's eye and artistic vision to create his pieces.
Ernesto has been featured in several television shows, including LEGO® Masters, where he created an incredible van Gogh portrait that got lots of attention. His works have been featured in several museums in the Netherlands such as the Kunsthal in Rotterdam and Teylers Museum in Haarlem. In the Fries Museum, he even did a live brick painting of Ed Sheeran, based on the work of artist Colin Davidson which was widely shared, including by both Ed and Colin themselves.
After 18 years of being an art teacher, he made a big shift and became a full-time artist in 2023. He creates and shares new pieces regularly via social media, his website and in exhibitions, and he still uses his skills as a teacher to share his brickpainting technique through workshops.

Tinka Robev and Andrew Azzopardi design and produce contemporary puzzles that feed the soul and challenge the mind. These are not your average, everyday puzzles - they feature intricately-cut pieces that turn tried-and-true puzzle solving tactics upside down. They even come with difficulty ratings - that’s how challenging some of these puzzles are to solve.
They weren’t always puzzle makers. After meeting in university while studying architecture and design, this duo went on to launch a multidisciplinary design and branding agency. It was a few years later, during the coronavirus pandemic, that they came up with the idea to launch a puzzle company to encourage more people to get off their devices and to inspire social bonding moments.
Puzzle Lab is dedicated to fabricating heirloom-quality puzzles that are crafted with care in their own studio in British Columbia, Canada, using high-quality materials and thick, sturdy wooden pieces. They love collaborating with other creative people so their puzzles often feature artwork by both established and up-and-coming Canadian artists.
They are committed to being eco-conscious in every decision they make and they support social causes through their Puzzle with a Purpose series.

Katie Waters is a Foley Artist who enhances stories by performing the everyday sounds you hear in TV shows, movies, podcasts and video games. She captures live audio as she creates many different elements in a soundscape to perfectly match what’s happening on screen - everything from the sound of someone pouring water into a glass, walking down a hallway in high heels or hitting a tennis ball.
Katie says that when she starts a project, it's necessary to immerse herself into the world the characters are living in, in order to deliver the best sound - sliding it in as a layer of the soundtrack.
She’s an active member of the Motion Picture Sound Editors organization and is a full-time Foley artist at Noisefloor, a post-production audio facility in Chicago.

Bill Hecht creates retro-futurism robot sculptures, finding great joy in imagining new uses for materials that would otherwise be discarded. He imaginatively combines bits and pieces of different items to create robot figures that have personality and presence.
Bill established The Robotorium, where he dreams up, builds and showcases his found object robot sculptures. Electronics and industrial components that no longer serve their original purpose find a second life in his hands. The Robotorium is located at Western Avenue Studios in Lowell, Massachusetts, a creative community hub that’s home to more than 350 artists, and Bill says “it’s magic” to work in this engaging space.

On the 100th episode of the podcast, Lindsay Jean Thomson shares all about #The100DayProject!
It’s a free global creativity challenge and this year’s start date was announced during the episode. Taking part is pretty straightforward - you pick something and do it every day for 100 days, sharing online as you go.
The100DayProject, in its current form, celebrated its 10th anniversary last year and it’s going strong! The concept was originally developed by Michael Bierut and in 2014, Elle Luna and friends brought the project online. Lindsay started as a participant in this global art project and loved it so much she became a co-leader of the initiative in 2017.

Using fragile eggshells of all sizes as her creative canvas, Katherine Alexander designs colourful and intricate works of art. Her specialty is pysanky, the traditional Ukrainian art of writing on eggs.
Katherine says her creative fire comes from discovering the limits she can push with this beautiful but challenging medium. She respects the long history of pysanky and enjoys the classic designs that have been passed down from one generation to the next over thousands of years. She also creates new patterns using bright colours and whimsical designs.
She has been featured in more than twenty art exhibits and her work has been recognized with multiple awards. Katherine also uses her talents through her “Pysanky for Good” initiative, hosting fundraisers to support causes that are close to her heart.

Stef Bastiàn is a talented and experienced tattoo artist whose love affair with tattooing began when he was a teenager. His fascination was sparked when he crossed paths with Maurizio Fiorini, a heavily-tattooed man in his neighbourhood in Florence, Italy, who was well-known and well-respected in the industry.
Stef’s creative journey has taken him to the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, and 16 European countries, where he’s worked in numerous tattoo parlours, gaining the technical expertise and developing the network that has enabled him to become part of some of the best tattoo studios and conventions globally.

A lifelong love of singing and dancing took Robyn Bennett from her hometown stages to New York City and then to Paris. Once there, she performed in the musical Cabaret, directed by Sam Mendes, which played for two years at the famous Folies Bergère theatre.
Now Robyn makes her own music and performs regularly with her partner in life and work, trombone player Ben van Hille. She has written and produced several albums and performs her songs live in high-energy concerts with her incredible band.

Isobelle Ouzman alters books to create an alternate reality for what goes on between the front and back covers. She creates detailed three-dimensional scenes that unexpectedly but instantly capture your imagination.
She uses multiple techniques including paper carving, drawing and colorizing the pages. To create the 3D aspect, she has to think about the many layers of paper within the book and how she can sculpt them to reveal the scene she knows lies within. That might be an enchanted garden, or an owl tucked into a hollow in a tree. They are magical.

Kelsey Powless had never touched, let alone operated, a power tool in her life but one day she found herself inspired by artworks that had been made with a scroll saw. That was the moment that changed everything for her. With a supportive family and the ability to learn from people who shared their techniques online, she dove right in and the rest is history!
She began creating signs for herself as a hobby but after sharing photos on her personal social media accounts of the pieces she had made, it wasn’t long before people started asking her to create custom signs for them too. With that, her entrepreneurial life as a custom signmaker began!
Her company has a very important mission too, which is “revitalizing Indigenous art and languages through handcrafted decor” so that’s a big focus in her work as well. She often includes words from Indigenous languages as well as Indigenous imagery in her pieces, helping to share her culture with everyone who sees and enjoys the signs she makes with such care.

From an early age, Eva Luna Kodera dreamed of becoming a ‘book doctor’, inspired by a character in one of her favourite stories. Now, as a master bookbinder, she is living that dream.
She developed her bookbinding skills over many years, most recently becoming a master bookbinder after a three-year apprenticeship in the craft. Her final project was complex, using a combination of materials and techniques, along with a unique presentation.
Eva is creatively developing partnerships with authors and has been invited to work with a literature awards ceremony to custom-design and make the prizes that will be presented to winners. In addition to novels, she can also create many other, similar things for her clients - such as personalized journals, notebooks, envelopes and portfolios.
On this episode, host Angela de Burger chats with Eva about how she discovered the art and craft of bookbinding, the journey she’s taken to develop her skills, the relationships she’s creating with authors and why she’s excited about the doors opening in front of her.

Charlotte Pleasants is bringing Shakespeare’s classic works to modern audiences and forging her own creative path as an actor, producer, director and theatre company founder. Not only that, but she has taken on an additional challenge for herself by focusing on presenting English-language theatre productions in a French-speaking city: Paris, France.
Born in Australia and raised in New Zealand, she earned a university degree with a double major in theatre and anthropology. After a family trip to Europe she made her way to Paris, settled in, and has been involved in the live theatre scene in the city ever since.
Charlotte has served as a producer at Paris Fringe, as the artistic director of the Tapis Théâtre, as well as a producer and performer at Cygnet Theatre. There, she participated in productions of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet (2021), Lear (2020), Twelfth Night (2019), and A Midsummer Night's Dream (2018). Most recently, she became a founding member of Alchemy Theatre and is co-directing and co-producing The Taming of the Shrew, which will be performed in a French château this summer.

Lucy Butler is a sculptor who handmakes pieces that are inspired by the ruins of Irish churches, abbeys and houses that capture her imagination.
She studied Model Making for Film and Media at the Institute of Art, Design and Technology and worked in that field for several years. Then, she felt a call to return to her roots.
Today, Lucy specializes in historic sites and the details they offer up as she gives them time to reveal themselves. She says she is constantly drawn to fantasize about places and life, to a world without limits and a world of ‘what ifs’.

Mike Rohde is the creator of Sketchnotes, a method of note-taking that uses a combination of handwriting, drawings, hand-lettering, shapes, and visual elements like arrows, boxes, and lines. The focus is on capturing ideas, not art, and you don’t need any special drawing ability to do it. A couple of years ago, due to the sweeping changes to daily routines that came about because of the global pandemic, Travis Grant decided to try his hand at writing fiction - and wow was that a good thing!
He has a talent for writing scenes that ring true, creating believable, authentic characters that reflect the world within which he situates them. Corkie Bolton started making jewellery in high school, then went on to graduate from the Pratt Institute with a degree in metalsmithing. She loved it. But then life happened and she found herself setting jewellery-making to the side.
Years later, she had an experience that drew her right back, thanks to a chance encounter with a woman whose grandmother had also been a metalsmith. She was generously offered this kindred spirit’s beloved jewellery-making tools and that sparked her passion once again.
She started her own jewellery line in 2016, making heirloom quality, handmade products. Embracing the spirit of "community over competition", she launched the Metalsmith Society in 2018 to connect jewellers globally. That led to her writing the “Metalsmith Society's Guide to Jewelry Making”, which has received rave reviews from all over the world.

Chavah Lindsay dreamed about what she wanted to be from a very early age and those dreams have come true! She is a fashion designer who specializes in special occasion womenswear and her designs are incredible!
Chavah’s been having a lot of success - she debuted her new collection at Toronto Fashion Week, has been featured in HELLO magazine, and opened her own shop in Saint John, New Brunswick.
She is also one of 16 designers who were selected to create a gown made entirely out of bathroom tissue (also known as toilet paper) as part of the Cashmere Collection show. The gown she made will blow your mind!
And recently, she entertained the world with a video she shared on social media, showing how she pranked her daughter with a custom-made skirt. The video has over 20 million views so far!

He started his career in a different field but over time Andrew Prior found himself drawn to cooking and travelling more and more.
He can pinpoint the experience that changed his life: appearing on MasterChef Australia. By the time the show was over, he realized that food and travel were his true passions and he wanted to pursue them professionally. He went on to create a successful walking food tour business in Melbourne, welcoming over 3,000 clients in 4 years!
But, Andrew says, France was calling his name. So with his husband and two golden retrievers, he took the bold step of packing up and moving internationally. Since then, he’s completed Le Cordon Bleu’s Patisserie course, hosted food tours of regional France and the Cote D’Azur, established a YouTube channel to share his adventures, offered cooking classes, and launched a podcast called Fabulously Delicious.

For the first time ever, a guest has returned to the podcast! Drew Hill is here to share all about his latest exciting projects, including a brand new book.

Brendan Rawlings spots driftwood and sees the possibility for sculptures. He’s able to breathe new life into reclaimed wood too, creating new ways for it to be enjoyed and valued.
After a successful career in another field, he discovered his creative passion while making a driftwood sculpture of a shark for his brother-in-law as a gift. During that process he says he finally, in his mid-thirties, realized what he wanted to be when he grew up.
He shared a photo of the shark sculpture online and very quickly had requests for commissioned work, and with that his company Zen Wood Design was officially in business. He believes that sustainability should be at the heart of all business practices and protecting our beautiful planet is a responsibility we should all take seriously.
Along with rave reviews from his clients, he’s also an award winner, named Sculpture Artist of the Year in 2021 at the Corporate LiveWire Innovation and Excellence Awards.

Faigie Kobre says that art wasn’t really her thing growing up, but she did have a serious love for art supplies.
She became an early childhood educator, providing her students lots of opportunities to develop their own creativity. She even started a website for parents and teachers, providing arts and crafts activities for children to help them grow and develop their creative potential. She also developed photography skills and became a high end portrait photographer.
Then her world changed - she was taking a course and had to do research on creativity. As a result, she stumbled across mixed media art. It was all new to her - and through that process, she fell in love with alcohol inks and the art she can create with them. True to her roots as an educator, she couldn’t wait to share her new discovery so other people could experiment with the medium too.

Emily Puente is a total pro at so many things - and stop motion animation is one of the latest ways she’s sharing her creativity with the world. This form of visual storytelling is an incredible way to create a scene and bring viewers on a ride, all through a series of very small movements.

Lauren Schipper knows all about the kinds of unique sets of dice that can help you conjure up some extra magic during games with your friends. She recently made a big career jump into making custom dice full-time through her own company - Busy Wizard Dice - so she knows what she’s talking about.
“Dice handmade with love” - that’s what she says you can expect from her. She specializes in creating full 7-piece RPG sets (that stands for “role playing games”). She works closely with clients to learn about what will make their custom set as special as it can be for them.

Laura Downing handmakes ceramics and each piece is unique as a result. Taking clay as a raw material, then using her hands and a wheel to get the design exactly right, she creates all kinds of things - everything from mugs, to ornaments, to items that support other artists, like watercolour paint palettes!
One of the final steps of her process is to fire those items in a kiln, which heats the pieces to incredibly high temperatures - 600 to 1000 degrees Celsius (or for those who use Fahrenheit - that’s 1100 to 1800 degrees)! Talk about high stakes - thank goodness she really knows what she’s doing.
Laura also uses her talents to raise money for social causes that are important to her. Creating a couple of special series, she sold sets and donated a portion of the proceeds to charities and non-profits.

Allie Goodbun has worked hard for years to be able to do the thing that makes her happiest - dancing - as her job. She’s a really motivated, and a really motivating, creative talent who is chasing her dreams and making the most of where they take her.

For Gabe Wasylko, the long days of the pandemic became a source of inspiration. He wanted to find a way to add some bright moments so he challenged himself to take a photo every single day and share it through his social media accounts.
That “one photo a day” idea really took hold and now his series, “Capturing Cleveland” is an incredible showcase of the diversity of landscapes and beauty found in his city. He says he loves the time spent, often all on his own in the early hours of the morning, behind the lens of his camera.
This project even led him to host a charity event, where his photographs became a way for people to support causes that play important roles in the community.
He was thrilled to recently be recognized as one of Cleveland’s best photographers.

Jim Bachor says that “using the same materials, tools and methods of the archaic craftsmen, I create mosaics that speak of modern things in an ancient voice.”
A student and enthusiast of history, artmaking, and storytelling that will endure for the ages, he creates works of art that speak about unusual things, through culturally relevant themes and concepts. In addition to participating in traditional art shows and designing commissions, he also installs his mosaics as unexpected pieces of public art.
He searches out potholes (!) in city streets and they become homes for his mosaic artworks, sharing stories in places where everyone can see them.
His work has been recognized with multiple awards, from organizations such as the Society of American Mosaic Artists and the University & College Designers Association. He also presented a TEDx Talk entitled, “Immortality is a Team Effort.”
Timeout Chicago included his pieces in a list of the city's greatest public art, and the New York Post called him the "Pothole Picasso”.

Dingding Hu is an illustrator who specializes in food illustration. She creates whimsical, colourful designs and says she’s in the mood of food and on a quest for joy!
She develops commercial art projects for brands to enhance their unique voices and makes editorial illustrations to brighten up reading experiences for publications.
Dingding has her own online shop too, called Hu is Hungry, where she offers food-inspired merch. Since she’s always exploring new ways to share her creativity, she recently started performing stand-up comedy, and is launching a podcast.
She’s worked on projects for Google, the MIT Media Lab, and DOT NYC. Her work has also appeared in the New York Times, HuffPost, and TED. She is the recipient of a silver medal for Digital Media at the Comics and Cartoon Art Show, presented by the Society of Illustrators.

Siew Heng Boon is a Jelly Artist who crafts 3D jelly cakes and she’s the founder of Jelly Alchemy. She uses seaweed jelly in many different colours to create intricate designs, working with a variety of tools to inject coloured jelly into a clear jelly mold. Siew builds complex images in layers, creating them from an upside-down perspective and then flipping them over when complete and ready to serve.
She creates floral designs as well as almost any animal you can think of - fish, a panda, a peacock, a bunny, and many types of birds, to name only a few. Siew’s stunning, unique work is handcrafted, edible and as equally delicious as it is beautiful.
People have been so intrigued with her work over the years that they asked her to teach them how to do it too. She generously shares her knowledge and techniques with students all over the world through her Jelly Alchemy online classes, as well as in person in Sydney, Australia (where she’s based) at the Australian Patisserie Academy.

Shazlin Rahman’s beloved grandmother was a strong presence in her life and the artwork she creates is inspired by that strong, resilient woman and her batik sarongs. She says she uses her art to engage audiences in conversations about the resilience of women of colour.

Molly Wilkinson grew up in Dallas, Texas but followed her lifelong passion for baking to Paris, then to other cities in France, and now finds herself in Versailles - yes, the same one you’ve heard of with the incredible Château de Versailles just down the street from where she now lives!
After studying to become a French pastry chef, at Le Cordon Bleu no less, she is perfecting her craft and sharing her source of joy with the world! She’s had a very busy few years - offering in-person classes where she breaks down classic French pastry recipes and makes them easy and accessible, establishing an online pastry school, and becoming a published author of a cookbook titled French Pastry Made Simple, perfect for bakers of all levels.

She takes pride in the method she’s created to make French pastry easy by breaking down recipes and showing lots of tips and tricks to help any baker achieve extraordinary results.

Anna Chojnicka uses a very typical, everyday item as her canvas - a banana! By pressing and poking into a banana’s peel in a series of carefully placed movements, she strategically bruises the skin of the banana, ultimately creating the most incredible edible artworks.
It’s hard to believe how detailed and intricate Anna’s designs are, considering she doesn’t use ink or paint or anything like that. All of the magic comes from the way she manually bruises the banana peel, combined with precise timing to achieve the look she’s going for.
And after all of that work, there’s a time limit on how long her artworks will be in their peak condition. After that brief window of time, the images live on only in photos.
Since Anna began, by chance, she’s created over 700 bruised banana artworks, taught workshops worldwide so other people can try their hand at it, and raised funds for causes she cares about.

Siobhan Westrop is a poet who knows how to carefully craft entire story arcs using just the right words.
She lives, writes and explores in the Canadian Rocky mountains. Her work has been published in the Tiny Seed Literary Journal and Cerasus Magazine. And she just published a poetry chapbook, titled “Naturally.”
For this special chapbook of her poetry, she collaborated with Canadian landscape painter Joanne MacLennan - whose name may sound familiar because she is incredibly talented too and was a guest on episode 35 of the podcast.

Lauren Fitzmaurice has tried lots of different creative pursuits but then she started experimenting with calligraphy. It captured her imagination, was a great match for her skill set, and she’s never looked back!
This method of creatively expressing herself came at a time when she needed that kind of outlet, helping her navigate some difficult moments in life. With big life worries on her mind, taking the time to slow down and practice mindfulness through this creative practice was just what she needed.
Since discovering this passion for calligraphy, she’s taught the art to hundreds of people. And recently, her first book was published! It’s titled “Hand Lettering for Self-Care: Calligraphy Projects to Inspire Creativity, Practice Mindfulness, and Promote Self-Love” and it helps people find ways to cut down on stress, make time for themselves, and learn a new skill.

Marian Gehman not only puts on a show but also creates the characters she’s portraying, detailing everything - right down to tone of voice, facial gestures and personalities. She’s a ventriloquist so she does all of it without even moving her lips when her puppet speaks!
Her characters find their way into this world through her creativity and imagination. And she ensures they are entertaining as well! That only happens with a lot of skill and even more practice.
She develops and performs shows that delight. Although the pandemic really caused a disruption in how she connects with her audiences, she figured that out too by thinking about her art in new ways.

A few years ago, Kelly Hardy decided to make a gingerbread house for the holidays. It didn’t turn out quite the way she wanted so the next year she tried again, but with a twist.
Being a Canadian Football League (CFL) fan, she decided to make a replica of a CFL stadium. She began with the home of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Mosaic Stadium.
It was a hit! She carried on and has made eight of the nine CFL stadiums over the years. The details she includes and her ability to capture the fun little elements that make each stadium unique is remarkable.

Tim Klein is not only a fan of puzzles, he gets really creative with them! He fires up his imagination to stretch the boundaries of typical puzzle play and uses them to create mashup-style, one-of-a-kind works of montage art.
Imagine having two puzzle boxes side by side, one with an image of a horse and the other with an image of a train. Tim looks at those two images and imagines how he might be able to combine them to create something new. Making an eye-catching combo image that makes sense all on its own, in an alternative, or alt-design kind of way - that takes creativity!
He’s one of only a few people in the world who have pursued this art form to the extent he has and he shares details about his ability to look at the world with such an eye for the unusual.

Jane Labowitch started playing with an Etch A Sketch when she was only four years old. She’s been able to combine a talent for drawing with the very precise movements needed to make the toy do what she wants it to do. She’s known as Princess Etch, is a professional Etch A Sketch artist, and has been recognized by Ripley’s Believe it or Not for her incredible creations.
When you consider an Etch A Sketch requires everything to be drawn via one continuous line, you can imagine how much creativity it requires to develop the complex, detailed scenes she loves to design!
There are several sizes of Etch A Sketch these days, so her canvas (so to speak) ranges from using the classic size which is about 9 inches by 9 inches, all the way to mini ones that measure only about 1 inch by 2 inches. And if you remember playing with this toy, you’ll recall that the images you make aren’t permanent; with a quick shake you’re back to having a blank screen.

Lottie Hazell is the co-founder and lead designer at Birdwood Games, a board game publishing company she founded with her husband, Jack. Her first game, Dog Park, launched on Kickstarter recently to resounding success!
In its 16 day campaign, the funding goal was reached 23 times over! It’s no wonder - Dog Park is a beautiful, card-driven game about walking dogs and features unique watercolour illustrations that, in the Collectors edition, features every dog recognized by the UK Kennel Club, all 221 of them! That includes one that looks just like her own cute dog, a springer spaniel named Rupert.
Lottie is also the co-host of the podcast, Board Games with My Wife, which was selected as one of Apple Podcast's 'Cosy at Home' picks earlier this year.

Through her artwork, Andrea Blackman shares special animals that are native to her area in Australia. She brings out the cute, playful, and even mischievous nature of wildlife such as magpies, kookaburras, and sugar gliders. Justin Bateman has made all kinds of different artworks over the years - sculpture, drawing, painting, and most recently, land art that’s made of pebbles. You may have seen photos of his spectacular version of the Mona Lisa - his version is called Stona Lisa - or one of his other incredible creations.
Last year, just prior to the pandemic beginning, he went to Thailand to pass the impending lockdown there. Time has passed, it’s 18 months later, and he’s still finding inspiration in Chiang Mai. During this time he’s found new ways to express his creativity by making versions of famous paintings as well as original portraits using only pebbles and natural materials that he finds outdoors.
He not only creates his own artwork, but he’s also shared his creative passion as a Fine Arts professor at the University of Portsmouth and teacher of Art and Design at Fareham College in the UK.

Dave Gee has an instantly-recognizable drawing style that he’s made his own through lots of practice. He’s a doodle artist, creating his trademark maps that combine his unique doodle style with cartoonish illustrations.
He creates maps of cities that are unlike any you may have seen before. To give you an idea, they’re often wall-sized, and much more fun than a typical map! Dave is based in Manchester, UK, and has traveled across Europe, as well as to Hong Kong and the USA to create large scale wall murals.

Inspired by her grandfather’s talent and love of creating stained glass, Chantelle Elsligar took the opportunity to learn the basics of the art form from him. Although he was dealing with memory issues they managed to share these special moments together, creating a family tradition in the process.
Once Chantelle started experimenting with designs of her own, she fell in love with the creative process. Whether she’s creating a design with a realistic style or something more abstract in nature, she’s having a lot of fun and can’t imagine her life without stained glass art in it.

Over the past year, longtime artist Anna Chan has found newfound inspiration on a nearby beach. Listening to the call of the materials she found along the way, she began creating ephemeral works of art - meaning they last a very short time. On a beach, that’s usually thanks to the elements, like wind and water.
Using found materials such as sand and seashells, she’s made sculptures of a lion, a panda, a whale, a chickadee, a peacock, hedgehog and toucan, to name only a few.

Candace Birger (aka PlexiCosplay) is a talented cosplayer who has been recognized with multiple awards for her incredible costume designs. She even took first place in the armor category at the New York Comic Con Eastern Regional Championships!
She’s accomplished all of this by teaching herself how to create all of the elements of her elaborate costumes, including sewing and molding thermoplastics.

Jackie Han discovered origami at a very young age - only 6 years old! His passion for this art form has only grown since then. It’s amazing to see all of the things he can create by simply making a series of folds and creases in a single piece of paper.
He’s studied a variety of origami methods and models over the years, so much so that in addition to making things for himself, he also started teaching other people how to do it. He’s offered workshops at schools, libraries, community centres, and over the last year, he’s also offered lots of online sessions.
He even started Origami Canada, a youth-led nonprofit that shares origami teaching resources for kids, parents, and seniors.
Considering he’s currently in grade 12, you can probably understand why he’s been recognized for his many accomplishments and service to his community, including receiving the Ontario Volunteers Award and a Richmond Hill Arts Awards for Youth.

Ptolemy Elrington has an incredible eye for what can be. He sees an item that might have little value to others, and then sees an amazing second life in its future. His imagination and talent allow him to turn one thing into another and that’s pretty awesome to see.
He studied art and design and has worked in theatre and set design and construction, led community art projects and travelled extensively. All of these experiences have informed the work he does now, as a sculptor who works in the medium of hubcaps.
His hubcap creatures, as he calls them, are made entirely from recycled and upcycled materials. All of the hubcaps are found items, and therefore bear the scars of their previous lives in the form of scratches and abrasions. He believes those marks add texture and history to the creatures they decorate.

Lauren Pelkey was bitten by the travel bug after a study-abroad experience and she’s never looked back. Natasha Smart is a wet felting textile artist, which means that she starts with materials such as wool fibres and through a multi-step process (which involves water, as you might have guessed) she ends up making a unique piece of fabric. It’s like magic to see her start with wispy pieces of wool and have them latch on to each other and end up as a firm, solid piece of material.
Letting her imagination run loose, she then uses that textile to create all kinds of items - handbags, ornaments, bowls, decorations, and lamp shades, to name a few.
She’s based in Exmouth, Devon in the UK and says she finds great inspiration in the coastal living she enjoys there.

Being a descendant of writer Ernest Hemingway, whose name is connected to Paris due to the time he spent there and the stories he told, maybe it’s a family connection that drew Claudine to this creativity-filled city. Krystal Kenney fell in love with Paris as a teenager after visiting as part of a school trip. Living in the United States at the time, she dreamed of moving internationally and several years later she made it happen. She now lives in the city of light: Paris, France where she explores her creative talents in many different ways.
She’s a professional photographer who specializes in capturing candid moments and special memories for locals and visitors to Paris. And when the COVID-19 pandemic arrived, meaning no one was taking vacations or holding special events that would benefit from her talents as a photographer, what did she do? She got creative!

Kait Rhoads creates stunning glass art sculptures that have been exhibited all over the world - from the USA to the UK, to Italy, Belgium, China, Japan and lots of points in between.
She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Glass from the Rhode Island School of Design and a Master of Fine Arts in Glass from Alfred University, New York State College of Ceramics. She also received a Fulbright Scholarship to study her craft in Venice, Italy.
Kait has been recognized with numerous awards and been an Artist in Residence many times, including at the Massachusetts College of Art, and the Tacoma Museum of Glass.
Her work can be found in public collections internationally, including at the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Corning Museum of Glass, the Seattle Art Museum, the Shanghai Museum of Glass, and the Toyama Institute of Glass Museum in Japan.

Jason Davis has dedicated his life to studying, performing and teaching opera and musical theatre in both Canada and the United States. He studied music at Dalhousie University, specializing in performance, and in addition, studied opera at the University of Hartford’s Hartt School.

William “Grit” Laskin is not only one of the world’s most talented and respected makers of steel-string, classical and flamenco guitars, but he expertly adds unique designs to the guitars he builds through intricate engraved inlay artwork.
His fans include legendary guitarists such as Rik Emmett, Tom Cochrane, k.d.lang, Jesse Cook, Garnet Rogers, and Stan Rogers. And Canada’s National Museum of History has four of his guitars in its permanent collection.
A short list of his achievements and recognitions include:
- receiving Canada’s prestigious Saidye Bronfman Award For Excellence in fine crafts, the first and only instrument maker to be honoured

It may not surprise you to hear that he’s also a musician, songwriter and singer. He plays the guitar, mandolin, Northumbrian smallpipes and concertina and has recorded four solo albums of original music.

Karen Evans Moratz is an accomplished musician who is the principal flutist with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, author of the bestselling book Flute For Dummies, and an adjunct instructor of flute and an Artist-in-Residence at Butler University’s Jordan College of the Arts.

Miranda Currie is a children’s entertainer who helps fuel a love of music for her audiences. She writes and performs songs that help kids learn Indigenous languages and to be proud of their culture in a fun and engaging way. She says that at the core of everything she does, she hopes to change the Indigenous narrative in Canada in a positive way.

Emma FitzGerald uses her considerable artistic talents to sketch unique details in cities and special places so she can capture a little of their magic. She’s an illustrator and author who has explored dual paths of visual art and architecture. This ultimately led her to opportunities to work with publishers to create and release several books such as “Hand Drawn Halifax”, “Hand Drawn Vancouver” and “Sketch by Sketch Along Nova Scotia's South Shore”.
Emma is a woman of the world: born in Lesotho, a small mountainous kingdom in Southern Africa, moving to Vancouver, BC in Canada at a young age, spending time in Ireland and France, and later choosing Halifax, Nova Scotia as her home. She says that these “travels have instilled a keen interest in people and places.”

Helen Nugent is the artist behind some of the most spectacularly designed pies you’ve ever seen. A self-taught baker, she spends time experimenting with ways to bring her creative visions to life. The results are showcased on her popular Instagram account and baking blog. That’s where she also gives lots of tips so people can give their own ideas a try as well. That’s probably why a publisher approached her and after tons of baking, recording recipes and photographing the stunning results, her debut book entitled “Pie Style” will be released in September.

Ashleigh Powell is a dance teacher and choreographer whose expertise and passion has introduced thousands of people to the wonderful world of dance. She graduated with distinction from the Teacher Training Program at Canada's National Ballet School and her talents have been recognized with multiple awards for excellence in teaching. Today she is a member of the artistic faculty and head of community dance programs at Canada's National Ballet School.
In addition to teaching dance Ashleigh is a creative and skilled choreographer, creating works for the Toronto Youth Theatre, Hart House Theatre, the Classical Theatre Project, Canopy Theatre, and the Next Stage Festival. She’s also been very involved with the Sharing Dance program at Canada’s National Ballet School, which brings the joy of music and dance to people in communities across the country.
