In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, 5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

Job eventually comes to see God in the midst of his circumstances. He wakes up to the fact the wisdom of his friends, and his own understanding cannot deliver him. But God has the power to. Like Job, we can lament our circumstances, we can express our anger, frustration, doubt and show God our ashes. God can handle it and wants us to invite him in the mess. He knows. He knows us. He knows how it turns out. For Job, it was dire. God replaced all he lost two times over. Jesus’ triumphant entry wasn’t what Israel thought it was, but it was a picture of what is to come. Our worst day, will be turned into our day of triumph.
The Israelites have learned nothing. God sends them back into the wilderness for what ends up being 40 years. Why? They still did not trust God’s provision. To enter into their promised land all they had to do was trust the God who had brought them there. If we are going to enter into the life that God has promised us, full of grace and mercy, we have to take the humble path. We have to come to the end of ourselves.
Paul did not reject the Athenians for their idolatry. In fact, he worked within shared beliefs. What if our efforts to make disciples, and participate in God’s kingdom looked more like Paul’s work in Athens. We are all made in God’s image, and we have things that we believe that we share, but there is more to be discovered. Let me tell you about it. What would you imagine that approach to the kingdom would look like?
The vocation of our true self is love and compassion. Love for God is not an achievement or checklist. Love for God comes easily and naturally from our true self, especially if we truly realize how much we have been forgiven.
When you take a commitment, you now realize that you are setting yourself up for internal conflict. Whatever you give up, when you are confronted with the option of partaking again, you find yourself in conflict with your desires. Perhaps we are consumed with keeping the law instead of trying to live by the spirit. Perhaps we are too consumed with sin avoidance verses seeking to love perfectly.
Lent is awareness that the father loves us no matter how broken we may be.
Lent is rest. You don’t have to perform. You can rest from trying to be perfect. One son built a life of pleasure and possessions to hide the pain of his brokenness. One son relied on duty and discipline to earn the father’s love. Both tried to be something they were not.

How can you critique others or hold others accountable for what you excuse in yourself?
If you search your own heart, and find the sin that is there, and you are able to rightly see!! (v5) You will be able to help your neighbor from a position of humility and graciousness. You won’t judge them for failure when you know that you struggle and fail as well. Seek forgiveness from God and he will grant it. If you, a sinner, know how to be gracious with others, how much more gracious will your father in heaven be if you ask him.
There is a comparison between earthly and heavenly treasure. Reality is earthly possession doesn’t last, and you will not be taking it with you.I f you belong to the kingdom of God, do you trust your king to know what you need and provide for you? or would you rather build your own kingdom and worry about providing for yourself? This does not mean I can sit on the couch and God will provide. Our concern over provision ought to be concern for one another.
Your practices are perfectly designed to give you the results you have. If you do it for others then your reward comes from what you receive from others not from God. What practices make a good Christian? Giving, prayer, fasting...mercy, compassion, sacrifice. They shape our hearts, and give glory to our Father in heaven.
Jesus continues to re-center his followers on the intent of the biblical commands and laws, by not viewing them so much as laws or rules to follow, but as a life shaped by being in God’s kingdom. Last week we went to the heart with anger and lust. And the examples this week really aren’t different. The sermon on the mount holds a mirror to our hearts.
You have heard it said... That’s the tip off phrase that he is referring to the law and prophets or at least the standing interpretation of the pharisees that everyone was supposed to follow. Anger is the same as murder. Abusive, harsh language is as well. v 22 if you insult... or say “you fool” you will be liable to hell.
Journal Prompt: What anger or lust are you holding in your heart that you need to release, and how might you go about releasing it this week?
Living the life of a citizen of God’s kingdom sets you apart from the world. Jesus warns us in 11-12 that living in a kingdom that is here but not complete that values the inverse of what the world holds up will lead to us being separated and persecuted.
The beatitudes cultivated in us make us salt and light. As salt we engage the world. As light we never allow that engagement to compromise who we are.
Jesus gives his followers the blessings or benefits of kingdom membership. These are the lifestyle of those who repent for the kingdom is near. If you have repented, you are in reconciliation and peace with God. You would think kingdom members who live this way would be loved by the world, but Jesus promised persecution for the way we live.
At creation light entered the physical darkness. At the birth of Jesus the light of the world disrupts a world filled with spiritual darkness. All of history turns on the revelation of God in Jesus.It is at Christmas that the world encounters God in the flesh, in person, dwelling among us. The ultimate disruption.
Joseph has found out that Mary is expecting a baby even though they have not lived together yet. But, he didn’t know what we know as the readers of Matthew. He has to assume the worst.
What does this reveal about God? God will accomplish his plan of redemption. God normally reveals himself and works through normal circumstances, but when he has to he will take decisive steps to accomplish his plan. He can be trusted, and we cannot screw that up. Therefore we have hope and peace and joy.
We are often perplexed about what God is doing. Especially if something that is happening in our life is completely disruptive. Our reaction still ought to be similar to Mary’s. Uncertainty about how God will do something is part of our faith journey, but the response of "here I am, your servant" is the right response.
A tragic situation. The disruption: A Birth Announcement. The announcement is an end to a personal tragedy, but also to national barrenness and pain.
Prayer is the context a believer waits for God’s justice. It is a faithful response of one who suffers to respond with patience and prayer. Instead when facing suffering or doubt, we consider it joy, wait patiently, and pray to a God we know keeps his promises.
Where does conflict and strife come from? Does it not come from desires that are at war within you??
How do you know if someone is wise? In general are we more focused on being wise or avoiding looking foolish? Who are we worried about looking foolish to? A person who is wise is peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and bears fruit, impartial, and sincere.
A tongue under control is... A marker of spiritual maturity. A great tool that... Sets the direction of your life. Stewards great resources around you. Can save or destroy. With great power comes great responsibility.
We have all wondered in our spiritual journey if we are saved. And when we question our faith, that ultimately leads to more questions, which by the way is the nature of biblical mystery.
What are we to do? Ask ourselves. What good is there in claiming to be a Christian and if your life doesn’t reflect that claim? Is your faith in Christ changing who you are. Do you demonstrate that faith by your actions? Do you demonstrate that face even when it is not easy to do so? If not, do you really have a saving faith?
“My brothers and sisters, do you with your acts of favoritism really believe in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ?” Wait, favoritism is a sin? The royal law is the law of God. Lev. 19:18, Love your neighbor as yourself is the guiding principle for how we are to treat others, and to show favoritism is to love one differently than the other.
There are consequences to what we shape our hearts desire around. Sin reaches full grown perfection in death. Spiritual death being separation from God. But doing what the Word says confirms the Word in your heart. You will be blessed in your actions.
Wisdom is skill at life, particularly how to make the right decision. For James wisdom is the ability to skillfully determine how to live in a Godly manner. Of course God gives this freely to those who ask.
We have to live as markers as proclaimers, as representatives of Jesus to world. We have to cultivate an awareness of where God is at work so that we can participate in his purpose and in his mission.
People in our lives that help us grow. We all have them. We hire experts for everything and trust their advice implicitly. But not when it comes to spiritual matters.
We need a wise sage in our life who asks the right questions. We need a court jester that calls to light the junk in our life. We need knights that lead the charge and encourage us.
We need each other. We are better together.
How do we know when a person is mature. M. Scott Peck says that maturity is the ability to delay gratification. To the degree the church caters to instant desires, it actually works against our spiritual maturity.
People often focus on Peter losing focus and falling into the sea, but people forget that he experienced the miracle because of his faith
If we have confidence that God has provided our salvation through Jesus, why do we doubt that he would provide for his children in other ways... “Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire other than you.” Psalm 73:25

A guest speaker today; the gospel means action. When God calls us somewhere, he wants us to begin moving now.
Objects at rest will stay at rest. We have hope for the part of our salvation that is not yet realized. There is a great ache in our hearts for what will be. But what if we feel stuck in place on our journey? Perhaps what holds us in place is the power of our own ego. The spirit helps us in our weakness and in our stuck place.

Almost everyone can see the world is not as it should be, but Christians are called to move beyond the chaos. But how are we supposed to do that?
Charlie's the dad of a six year old. As many of you know, six year olds can be difficult, but Charlie is learning to read Matthew. We often think of God as just the angry dad; He's actually more concerned with the Why in our hearts.
Matthew loves to go out and play in the dirt, but as adults we tend to stay away from dirt and cold weather. We do the same thing with our sins, we act like they don't exist or we try to rationalize them away. Ash Wednesday and Lent are great reminders of why this isn't true with God.

Christians are different. How we experience the world and death is very different than non christians; but how do we embody the hope the gospel gives us?

The Church is TOO relaxed. Paul talks to the church in Thessalonica about their struggles, but how does that translate to us today?
Sometimes, we have no problem hearing God. We just don't like what He has to say. There's a pretty famous story involving a boat, a fish, a city, and a man from the old testament that shows exactly what can happen when God takes us to an uncomfortable situation.
The call on our life is to claim the name of Jesus. This means our life should reflect Christ; Paul writes extensively on how this should look. There is a missional character to God, one of Hope, one of Faith, and one of Love. How do we take on the character of Jesus and become Christ-like?

Made a new year's resolution? Are you anti-resolutions? Has 2020 made it feel like resolutions are impossible? This is the time of year everyone starts over after the holidays and seeks to make changes. They make new commitments, again...or don't. We all have a desire to change something. Our best commitments usually still seem to fail us and leave us unfulfilled. Life gets in the way.

When God raised Moses up to deliver the people from Egypt, those in political power were afraid and killed the baby boys. When Jesus was incarnated to deliver the people from Sin, those in political power were afraid and killed the baby boys.
There are strong parallels between these accounts. But out of great misery, suffering, and tragedy, God worked His greatest triumphs.

Christmas is the season where we sing songs like Joy to the World, but not all of us experience joy during the advent season. Life has robbed us of our joy. Our hearts are burdened as we carry forward. While we are surrounded by others celebrating the holidays, our hearts are heavy. The promise of joy is the promise the angels made to the shepherds: Good news of great joy for all people.

There are many seemingly contradictory things. Things must die in order to live; giant sequoias depend on fire to reproduce. Jesus tells us that to truly live, we must die. But what does that mean?

So much of our world as we know it is difficult, out of place, and not as it ought to be. The things we have hoped for, the plans we have made, the promises we pin all our dreams on, fail us time and time again. God knows...that is why he sent his son Jesus. At advent we not only look back to the messiah who came, but celebrate the promise of the messiah who will return. All our hopes, all our desires, all our dreams hang on the promises of Christmas. The arrival of Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s promised supreme loving act. Becoming one of us and humbling himself to be born in a manger, to be with us. He loved us so much that he became one of us so that we could know his love, and carry that love with us to the world.
Winter is here. It's a dark time in the world and for the church, but we hold onto the faith that spring is coming.
The world we live in can seem hopeless. No matter how hard we try, we can find our circumstances too much to bear. Without hope it is very difficult to face the next day. We can endure if we have hope. The world that Jesus was born into was not any different. People struggled for purpose, for meaning, to provide for their families. The people of God had been waiting for the promised messiah for generations. The star over Bethlehem meant the promised arrival of the hope of this world has come.
