Recently, a boater in Little Venice refused to hold a rope for a single-handed, double-moored fellow boater on the grounds that, "I never let people moor against my boat! If you followed my example, you wouldn't need my help." Later that day, having moved off unassisted, Mike Coll ended up moored alongside me in Wesbourne Park .... so we recorded this podcast about anti social behaviour on the canals.

Many of you will recall Highlander catching fire and sinking in April 2018. In November 2017, as I was struggling to handle a tricky mooring situation in Little Venice, another boater helped me out. This was my first meeting with Pancho. He's helpful ... and from Peru. He's lived on his boat for just 6 months.
In this podcast, we talk about being helpful, Faith and the nature of community - online, in London and on the waterways. Pancho talks about his best friend's suicide and how this affected his outlook. Joel talks about 2 incidents he experienced on the Hammersmith & City line this week.

Barry Ferns has been on his narrowboat for just 3 weeks. He has already had a window smashed & a solar panel stolen.
Joel has been boating for 7 years. Once someone knocked on his boat at 3am and ran off.
This week, they are both moored in West London.
On top of boating, Joel & Barry also have the comedy world in common. Joel was a comedy promoter from 1994 to 2012. Barry is the brains behind the Angel Comedy Club - (http://www.angelcomedy.co.uk)
Even though they'd met before, this was the first time they talked properly.

Karl and his teen daughter continuously cruise on the Grand Union. He trades in crystals & fossils.
Here we discuss what it's like to live on a narrowboat when you're 13 and the challenges of getting to school without the luxury of a home mooring. We also explore what can happen when you attempt to move someone else's boat a few feet in order to make enough space for your own. It might be acceptable in London but what about elsewhere??? (spoiler alert: I tried to do this today and it didn't work out too well).

Few boaters are better equipped to discuss the rapidly changing face of London boating than Lindsey Hood. She has been boating for 20 years & continuously cruising into London long before hipsters were invented. As Martyn Whitwell sits in his London flat, elsewhere, his beloved narrowboat sits on the cut. He keeps a close eye on it though - several times a day - via an online monitoring system that he's designed & customised himself.
Like most boaters, his waterways activities slow down in the winter but, once the weather turns in his favour, Martyn covers more boating miles in a week than many manage in a year.

Last year, whilst triple-moored in Kings Cross, I received a note on my boat, from Mikaela, asking me to move my vessel. It's one of the many things Mikaela and I discuss in this lively episode. I first met Paddy when we were both students. We didn't know each other well. 30 years on, for the first time, we talk properly. It's a good time, deep sometimes, on boating, books and what it is to be human.

Midlands based chaplain, Richard Alford, has been working with boaters in difficulty for a few years and met up in Hemel Hempstead to talk about his work.
