Recently, a boater in Little Venice refused to hold a rope for a single-handed, double-moored fellow boater on the grounds that, "I never let people moor against my boat! If you  followed my example, you wouldn't need my help." Later that day, having moved off unassisted, Mike Coll ended up moored alongside me in Wesbourne Park .... so we recorded this podcast about anti social behaviour on the canals.

Many of you will recall Highlander catching fire and sinking in April 2018. Luckily, Benjamin Mercer was not on board at the time. 12 months on, he has rebuilt his life and is enjoying life back on London's waterways. We met up in Little Venice where he described what happened to him and the ramifications.

Benjamin Mercer is a writer who has been published in Brexit Central, Counterfire & The Salisbury Review. You can read some of his work at

Jasmin joins me in Limehouse to talk about all things London & boaty and I attempt to find out if she's really as nice as everyone thinks. During the interrogation, we talk London boat crime, gossip about other boaters and discover that she's "elfed" for Bob Geldof (and met Ed Sheeran). Behold...... the secrets of Jasmin.

Following the podcast, Jasmin said "Ahoy" and, before I knew what was going on, we were filming an episode of 'This Narrowboat Adventure' which is now live on Jasmin's YouTube channel.

Despite all the talk, Lindsay did not join me for cake afterwards. I ate a chocolate & pistachio brownie - alone.

In November 2017, as I was struggling to handle a tricky mooring situation in Little Venice, another boater helped me out. This was my first meeting with Pancho. He's helpful ... and from Peru. He's lived on his boat for just 6 months.

In this podcast, we talk about being helpful, Faith and the nature of community - online, in London and on the waterways. Pancho talks about his best friend's suicide and how this affected his outlook. Joel talks about 2 incidents he experienced on the Hammersmith & City line this week.

There are several references to an earlier conversation that was supposed to appear at the end of the episode but the audio file was accidentally deleted. The interesting stuff is all in this section though.

Barry Ferns has been on his narrowboat for just 3 weeks. He has already had a window smashed & a solar panel stolen.

Joel has been boating for 7 years. Once someone knocked on his boat at 3am and ran off.

This week, they are both moored in West London.

On top of boating, Joel & Barry also have the comedy world in common. Joel was a comedy promoter from 1994 to 2012. Barry is the brains behind the Angel Comedy Club - (http://www.angelcomedy.co.uk)

Even though they'd met before, this was the first time they talked properly.

Barry has new boater questions. Joel has old boater answers. They swap their stories and discuss boats, comedy & more.

It's a fascinating conversation which, as well as covering a range of boating issues, also reveals how Joel got to perform in Vegas and stories of rubbing shoulders with comedy's elite.

Barry reminds Joel of his past but is Joel what Barry Ferns is destined to become?

Karl and his teen daughter continuously cruise on the Grand Union. He trades in crystals & fossils.

Here we discuss what it's like to live on a narrowboat when you're 13 and the challenges of getting to school without the luxury of a home mooring. We also explore what can happen when you attempt to move someone else's boat a few feet in order to make enough space for your own. It might be acceptable in London but what about elsewhere??? (spoiler alert: I tried to do this today and it didn't work out too well).

Few boaters are better equipped to discuss the rapidly changing face of London boating than Lindsey Hood. She has been boating for 20 years & continuously cruising into London long before hipsters were invented. This episode - frank & unguarded at times - goes deep down the rabbit hole of how boating is being ruined in the capital. We explore SOME of the current issues including new boaters, old boaters, wide beams, people with 'no double mooring' signs in their windows, boaters who ignore the law / guidelines. conflicts with residents, triple mooring, a boater in Camden who hasn't moved for a year & facebook warriors.

Back in my Apsley marina days, Janul aka Jan Knox was my neighbour. She had one boat then . Now she has 4. Some really great stories on this episode plus discussion about the hows & whys of Johnny Diesel as well as tons of meandering psychobabble.

Tom Bier spent a year working on a coal boat in London. In this revealing episode, perhaps too candidly, he shares his experiences.

Do we need RULES on the canal & should we tolerate or punish those who

Should Kings Cross become a privatised floating market?

And the even more serious issues like....

Which celebrities have visited 'Word on the Water' & what books did they buy?

A fascinating talk with a unique & passionate boater.

As Martyn Whitwell sits in his London flat, elsewhere, his beloved narrowboat sits on the cut. He keeps a close eye on it though - several times a day - via an online monitoring system that he's designed & customised himself.

Like most boaters, his waterways activities slow down in the winter but, once the weather turns in his favour, Martyn covers more boating miles in a week than many manage in a year.

As well as discussing his remote online monitoring system, we also talk about his narrowboating adventures on tidal waters.
