Four years later, he is back with new experiences, fresh insights, and a whole new perspective shaped by raising kids and growing both personally and professionally, and what it means to live without compromise.
Originally from New York, Brian spent 15 years in the hospitality and fashion industries after a successful collegiate soccer career. But even with those achievements, he sensed there was more he could give and more life had to offer.
Knowing that growth often comes from challenge, Brian made it his mission to step beyond comfort and create a life that tested his limits. Through launching new ventures and helping others uncover their own potential, he has discovered a deeper sense of purpose that is now guided by family, perspective, and the desire to live Without Compromise in every season of life.

Back in 2020, we sat down with chef, cyclist, and entrepreneur Chris Cosentino to talk about food, creativity, and living life without compromise. Five years later, he returns to the show to catch us up on where life has taken him, and how he continues to reinvent himself.
In this conversation, Chris opens up about the ever-changing restaurant industry, what it takes to stay authentic in the face of shifting trends, and the lessons he’s learned about resilience and risk. We also dive into his love of cycling, how the bike has shaped his lifestyle, mindset, and even his professional choices. It’s not every day you meet someone who has stood on the highest peak of every continent and now leads one of the world’s most iconic endurance brands. In this episode of Without Compromise, we sit down with Scott DeRue, CEO of The IRONMAN Group, to talk about the journey that brought him from academia to the forefront of global endurance sport.
Now, as CEO, Scott is steering IRONMAN into the future while honoring its rich legacy. He shares what he’s learned from standing at finish lines around the world, how the IRONMAN ethos of “Anything is Possible” applies to both athletes and everyday people, and what excites him about the movement’s next chapter. Outside of his role, Scott is an avid mountaineer, having completed the Seven Summits earlier this year.
Athletic Brewing and IRONMAN have partnered for years, built on a shared belief that balance, resilience, and community matter as much as performance. Together, they’re helping athletes celebrate their pursuits, without compromise.
This episode was originally published in 2022, but is now more relevant than ever.
When we first released this episode, Lynn Rogers was deep in the fight of navigating her new reality after the sudden onset of CIDP, a rare neurological condition that had left her unable to walk just weeks before she was supposed to compete in her first IRONMAN.
Her resilience, perspective, and determination struck a powerful chord with listeners. So much so, in fact, that her story became the inspiration for Athletic Brewing’s 2024 documentary, Inches to Miles.
Since the release of that film, there’s been a major development: Lynn recently completed an IRONMAN, officially finishing what she set out to do years ago. Her journey from paralysis to the finish line is a remarkable example of what it means to live Without Compromise.
We’re replaying this conversation to honor that achievement and give you a deeper look at the person behind the headlines.

Before Cameron was a champion on the court in Britain, he was a three-year-old from South Africa who had recently moved to New Zealand, a place not well known for producing tennis stars.
Norrie fell in love with the game over other popular New Zealand sports like rugby and cricket and quickly rose the ranks to become the 10th-ranked junior in the world. Realizing just how good he was, he eventually moved to Great Britain to pursue tennis full-time and even spent his college years in Texas pursuing the sport.
On today’s episode we’re sitting down with Cameron to hear the ins and outs of the life of a pro, how he manages the demands of playing and travel, and some of his best stories from pursuing this game around the world.
Rob grew up playing and loving a variety of sports. However, in high school, he excelled at lifting weights. In fact, his first deadlift was over 500 pounds, and within a few months, he was already competing in strongman competitions.
He quickly rose through the ranks to become one of the premiere strongmen in the county (where? In the world?) and began setting records. With his success in what’s often considered one of the most masculine sports in the world, Rob felt he wasn’t being true to himself and those around him. In 2014 he built up the courage to come out, the first professional strongman to do so. As you’ll hear, this was far from easy for Rob. There was a constant fear about what his parents, friends, fellow competitors, and the world would think of him.
Taking the road less traveled is never easy, especially when you’re the one who has to blaze the trail. Today, we will hear Rob’s story and experience of living without compromise and how the weight we carry is not always made of iron and steel.
Matt considered himself a casual runner, completing one or two half-marathons a year. He was raising a family, advancing his career, and staying healthy. His outlook on life was that it was chugging along, and Matt was content. As far as he was concerned, he “had it all figured out.”
However, as life often does, it threw Matt a tough curveball with what seemed like an unsolvable problem. His balance was off, he was constantly exhausted, his vision was blurry, and so on.
After months of doctor appointments, ER visits, and no answers, Matt was left with a sense of bewilderment about the changes happening to him. After collapsing on a work trip and being rushed to the hospital by his work colleagues, he was finally diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and told he would be wheelchair-bound within five years.
Today, we’ll hear about Matt’s journey since the diagnosis, how he got back into running, and how he set his goals far beyond what he imagined before this life-altering news. This leads us to what’s next. Starting June 15th, Matt is planning to run from Lincoln, Nebraska, to Casey, Iowa, in an effort to raise awareness and funds for MS Run the US. You can follow along with his journey here.

Everyone thought Garrett was crazy to leave his high-rise office job to join a brewery in the attic of a building in 1989. Ever since Garrett had learned about all the craft styles that existed while traveling in Europe, he couldn’t help but think about ways to bring that variety and those styles of beer back to the US.
Fast forward to today and Garrett has been the Brewmaster at Brooklyn Brewing for over 30 years.
Something he couldn’t help but notice in the industry is the lack of diversity. Being one of the only black brewers in the early days has instilled in him the desire to re-diversify brewing through his work with the Michael James Jackson Foundation. They are an organization that funds brewing education scholarships to Black, Indigenous, and People of Color.
Athletic Brewing has been proudly supporting the Michael James Jackson Foundation since 2022 through the sale of Soul Sour, a fierce and fruit-forward sour brew crafted annually in honor of Black History Month. 100% of Soul Sour’s profits will be donated to organizations breaking down barriers in brewing, including Sacred Heart University and the Michael James Jackson Foundation for Brewing and Distilling, which are crafting opportunities for BIPOC brewers through scholarships, education, and career advancement.

Having earned her PhD in molecular biology at Harvard, Kanchan was intrigued when her research lab delved into exploring turmeric's beneficial properties—a spice deeply ingrained in her Indian upbringing, where its benefits were revered and understood through ancient tradition.
This revelation sparked her curiosity about the overlooked and misunderstood facets of spices. As a mother, when she began incorporating traditional spices into her child's meals, she recognized a significant knowledge gap and fear of using spices in children's food by other parents.
Motivated by this realization, Kayan dedicated her career to breaking down the barriers surrounding spices and understanding the benefits they have in our lives.
In today's episode, we delve into Kanchan's unconventional journey, hoping to inspire you to embrace the less-traveled path and add a dash of spice to your holiday menu.

Miri’s personal story is also unique in that she had the curiosity and gumption to push herself to understand the complex and beautiful ecosystems deeper into the lesser-known parts of her local trails and her desire to help others do the same.

In conjunction with the new Take Two episode, we wanted to reshare the 2021 interview we had with Jordan on the podcast. Since the chat, he’s moved across the country, had another child, and won another world championship.
Jordan Burroughs has one of the most medaled and storied careers of any American wrestler. That feat hasn’t come easy, and it hasn’t come without its losses. However, it’s the day-to-day focus that Jordan credits keeping him on top of the competition well into his decade-long wrestling career.
Learn what makes Jordan tick, how he makes the most of his time on and off the mat, and what it means to him to live without compromise.

When D'Mitri enrolled to play "football," his parents anticipated the familiar UK version they were accustomed to. Dave’s journey to culinary mastery and innovation was anything but ordinary. An early (and successful) pursuit of golf could have easily kept Dave out of the kitchen, but his desire to cook great food, and to do it in a new way, had him trading in his clubs and golf cart for spatulas and aprons, and never looking back.
From betting his whole future on his first restaurant in 2004 to opening dozens of other restaurants since, the road of culinary innovation has kept him on his toes and unafraid to try new things.
His pursuit has led him to critically acclaimed works in television, writing, and podcasting, and obviously, restaurants.
Listen in on today’s episode of Without Compromise to hear Dave’s story and be sure to check out Dave’s drink of the summer, Ripe Pursuit, a lemon-infused, radler-style brew at AthleticBrewing.com.

After the Civil War, in an experiment by the U.S. Army to determine the effectiveness of moving troops by bicycle, the all-Black 25th Infantry Regiment Bicycle Corps, known as the Buffalo Soldiers, was commissioned to embark on an expedition nearly 2,000 miles from Missoula, Montana, to St. Louis, Missouri.
The 1897 journey was dubbed “The Great Experiment” in national newspapers that cared to pay attention to the 41-day adventure, which crossed through some of the harshest conditions and terrain in the American West, spanning Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Missouri.
To celebrate the 125th anniversary of this experiment and to start a movement to identify these brave men and bicycle travel pioneers, in 2022, Erick Cedeño, aka the Bicycle Nomad, retraced the route and history of the All-Black, bicycle-mounted 25th Infantry.

Rodney was born and raised in Texas, not in an area with much craft beer. However, through traveling with his career in finance and inspiration from an uncle, he learned about regional distinctions and differences in beer and became fascinated by craft beer's uniqueness. This interest ultimately grew to the point he could no longer keep it on the side and made the leap to follow his passion and make it his career.
Rodney took the leap after getting the chance to study brewing science at Sacred Heart University through a scholarship supported by Athletic Brewing.

When Lynn started feeling tingling in her hands a couple of weeks before the IRONMAN she had been training so hard for, she chalked it up to training fatigue, nerves, or just something small that would pass. As it persisted and with her background in sports recovery, she knew something was wrong.
The tingling led to complete numbness to the point that Lynn couldn’t walk or use her lower body. She was subsequently diagnosed with Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP), the chronic form of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS). It’s is a rare disorder in which the body's immune system attacks the nerves, leading to weakness and sometimes paralysis. She would spend months in the hospital, repeatedly making progress and then relapsing.
“My story is shared by thousands but my experience as a scientist and an athlete has made the journey uniquely my own. I have learned innumerable lessons about surviving life’s challenges, even how to surpass every expectation. I want to share what I know.” - Lynn
On this episode, Lynn shares her experience with CIPD and the impact it had on her life and her journey to recovery and what the experience has taught her about living Without Compromise.

When a life-altering car accident upended Jason Hardrath's world, doctors said he'd never run again. Seven years later he has the most FKTs (Fastest Known Times) of anyone on earth. Now, he's on a journey to be the first person ever to set 100 FKT records.

Hailing from Rock Island, Illinois, Brea is the oldest of four having three younger brothers looking up to her. She was named Illinois Ms. Basketball three times, was the Gatorade Illinois Player of the Year another three times, a McDonald’s All-American, and the number 3 wing player in the country her senior year.
After compiling a ridiculous amount of offers, Brea selected the University of South Carolina where she continues her dominance today. Her team is currently the #1 ranked women’s NCAA basketball team with high hopes of making it to the tournament finals after a nail-biting loss to Stanford in the college basketball national tournament.

"Inspiration comes easily to Anthony Cooper-Jenkins.
It extends from his heart through many arteries – like his family, the cycling community, his favorite music, and his experiences growing up as a black man in both the United States and Venezuela – right out through his fingertips and onto canvas.
His work is eye-catching for its detail and emotion, often portraying portraits of influential people in Anthony’s life and within the Black community. Those who know him may be lucky to one day get a piece of his art."
Today we’re talking with Anthony, one of our ambassadors at Athletic Brewing, about what inspires him, how a dream helped him rediscover his love of art, and what he does to live life without compromise.

Oren became a fan of craft beer after visiting a beer festival in his home state of Connecticut a few years ago. After exploring the different beers and breweries in his area, he wanted to get involved in a bigger way. In the summer of 2019, Oren began working at a beer garden and slowly started immersing himself in other aspects of the brewing world. From bartending and customer service to canning and production, the more Oren learned about the industry the more he loved it and wanted to continue growing his knowledge.
That love for craft beer and the desire to learn has led Oren to be the first-ever recipient of the Athletic Brewing Company Scholarship through Sacred Heart University. The scholarship will provide Oren with a valuable skill set in the industry he already loves and help give him a bright future in brewing.
Today we’re going to hear about Oren’s story and what he’s learned so far in the program. Learn more about the Athletic Brewing Scholarship through Sacred Heart University here.

Brian grew up in New York and spent 15 years in the hospitality and fashion industry after a great soccer career at the University of Rhode Island. He was always a great athlete but knew that he wasn’t reaching his full potential in life.
Recognizing that he didn’t grow up with a lot of adversity, Brian made it his lifestyle to make most of his abilities by introducing adversity through getting out of his comfort zone and starting another business from scratch. This time, however, the goal would be to help others reach their potential too.
After jumping in head-first and getting David Goggins as his first fitness headline guest, his plan began to work. In 2017 and 2019 Brian was on the cover of Men’s Health and has been featured in Men’s Fitness, GQ, Esquire, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Fox 5, Cheddar, The Steve Harvey Show, and is a frequent guest on various Food Network shows.

As we straddle the dates between Veterans Day and Thanksgiving, we decided to highlight both with a unique episode. We’re hearing short stories from a handful of ambassadors about things they are unexpectedly thankful for this year. The reason for this is that so many of the guest on Without Compromise have mentioned gratitude as being one of their best daily practices or something that helps them live Without Compromise.
We’ll also be hearing from our Director of Operations and veteran, Chris Kallam, about our Veterans Day beer, Ready Front, which is still available at AthleticBrewing.com.

Summiting mountains in South America, bikepacking in the desert, and climbing classic big wall routes sound like epic adventures that you’d have to save lots of vacation days for, right? The travel alone would take up at least a day or two, especially for any international trips. Not to mention making arrangements for other responsibilities like kids, pets, work, etc.
Mike Chambers and his adventure partner, Jason Antin, think otherwise. In fact, they think you can leave the office on Friday at 5pm, have an adventure of a lifetime and be back at work at 9am on Monday. Is it easy? Of course not. Is it worth it? C’mon now.
It all started when Mike was living in Boston and Jason was based in Colorado and the two came up with the bright idea of summiting Mt. Rainier in a true weekend. To the astonishment of the park rangers that hesitantly granted them the permit, their plan worked. Although the morning meetings that Monday were not as productive as they usually were, they both walked away with a pretty epic response to the age-old question, “what did you do this weekend?”
Once the concept of Beat Monday was proven, Jason and Mike began dreaming of what else could be possible with this format. Bikerafting, big wall climbing, ultrarunning, and international travel began to fill their weekends and was even made into an OutsideTV series, Beat Monday.
Mike is joining us today to tell us about what he’s learned through the Beat Monday mindset and what’s possible for you to beat whatever your Monday is.

Finishing an IRONMAN is at the very top of many endurance athletes’ bucket lists. It’s a daunting goal to put all the training, logistical, and motivational pieces together to pull off such an extreme athletic achievement.
For Maddie, it was the ultimate athletic experience. Being a marathoner, she had a leg up on folks starting from scratch, but running is still only one-third of the skills you need for a triathlon, so the math was still against her.
Despite many setbacks and many times she could have logically bowed out of training and preparation, Maddie continued through every challenge, all the way up to race day (the ocean waves were crazy!). After 140.6 miles she heard those fateful words, “You are an IRONMAN!”.
Listen in to hear the biggest lessons that Maddie learned in preparation and on race day, and what it takes to finish an IRONMAN without compromise.

Hailey grew up in the service industry going to music festivals with her family’s coffee shop as a kid. When she got older she began getting more involved, fell in love with making elaborate mixed drinks, and even opened her own restaurant at one point. So when Hailey decided to cut out alcohol from her life it felt like a part of her went missing. When it came to her passion for mixology and cocktails, she didn’t look for a light at the end of the tunnel because she didn’t realize there was even one there. Did that passion have to just disappear now?
Hailey began to realize that there were tons of folks in her shoes. People who loved the energy and excitement around the service industry but decided to give alcohol the boot, yet still maintained their passion for the work they did. Slowly but surely, Hailey realized her passions were not only still accessible to her, but in a completely new, fresh, and healthy way.
We’re telling Hailey’s story today in celebration of Sober October. Whether you’re cutting out alcohol for one drink, one night, one month, or forever, this episode is for you!

When Billy’s mother, Betty, was diagnosed with cancer he decided to return home to Massachusetts instead of leaving for his climbing trip to Nepal. Billy had just graduated from college in Colorado and the world was seemingly his oyster.
As his mother’s cancer worsened, those free-spirited experiences became less and less important and were ultimately replaced with grief after Betty tragically passed away from cancer in 1974.
After floundering a few years and wondering how to process the grief, Billy’s desire to “do something” continued to grow. He took action in 1980 by organizing the first Pan-Mass Challenge as a way to make sense of the grief and carry on the legacy of his mother.
The challenge would be to ride a bicycle across Massachusetts and raise money for theJimmy Fund andDana-Farber Foundation. 36 people joined that first year and they raised $10,000. The PMC was born.
As founder and executive director of the Pan-Mass Challenge for over 40 years, Billy has grown the PMC into the largest single fundraising event in the country. To date, more than $700 million dollars has been raised, 6,000 riders participate every year with 4,000 volunteers and participation from 200 companies.

When Molly stepped up to the line at her very first marathon in 2019, which happened to be the Olympic trials, she didn’t necessarily have huge expectations. That’s not to say Molly wasn’t already an accomplished runner. With nearly a dozen state titles and an illustrious career at Notre Dame, including four national championships, Molly knew she was a talented runner. But this marathon was more about the experience and getting familiar with the distance than it was about winning.
She thought of the time she had put in, the struggle of near career-ending injuries, surgeries and setbacks, and the feeling of coming to terms with never running again. It made her want to run her best and leave it all on the course, and for the first time in a while, have fun.
To her and many others’ surprise, Molly placed second in the marathon, showing that a solid foundation can help you succeed in unfamiliar territory when you’re going against the grain.
Molly’s story is filled with unexpected turns, twists, and setbacks but ultimately proves once again that for many of us, perseverance is the secret to success.

In 1928 a group of five Black women set off on an unforgettable journey to bicycle 250 miles from Harlem to Washington D.C. in just 65 hours. For the next three days Marylou Jackson, Velma Jackson, Ethyl Miller, Leolya Nelson, and Constance White would pedal their bicycles 110 miles on day one, 40 miles on day two, and finish the experience with one more 100-mile push. When asked, by the one newspaper that wrote about the story, about what motivated this journey they responded by saying, “the love of the great-out-of-doors”.
Even though the journey was most likely unforgettable to them, history didn’t seem to take note of their ground-breaking experience for women and Black cyclists nearly a century ago. That is, until historian Marya McQuirter, found the picture and newspaper article in the mid-1990s and was immediately compelled to spread the word about this great accomplishment.
Fast forward to May of 2021 where the legacy continues. Daniela Ochoa Diaz, an Athletic Brewing Ambassador, joined four other women to recreate the journey nearly 100 years later. Today Daniela will tell us the story of that ride, how it went, and where the legacy goes from here.

Just outside of Las Vegas, at the heart of the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, stands a sheer sandstone wall. Striped with vivid reds, oranges, and yellows, and culminating in a graceful arching summit, the stunning rock formation is aptly called the Rainbow Wall, one of Alex’s favorite climbs.
To celebrate pride month we released a new beer taking on the same name, Rainbow Wall. All proceeds from Rainbow Wall will be benefiting Athlete Ally, who’s on a mission to end the rampant homophobia and transphobia in sport and to activate the athletic community to exercise their leadership to champion LGBTQI+ equality.

Have you ever taken a sip of an Athletic brew and thought, how in the world did someone come up with this great-tasting non-alcoholic craft beer? If so, you're in luck. We’re sitting down and talking with Bill Shufelt, the founder of Athletic Brewing Company, to talk about his vision and idea that sparked this entire movement and John's equally risky commitment and brewing expertise that set a series of events in motion that continually grows in size and influence. Taking the road less traveled will inevitably take some unexpected turns and uncover many unexpected opportunities. The key, as Seth says, is to follow the opportunities. He should know as the founder and creator of the premier mountain biking YouTube channel Berm Peak (formally known as Seth’s Bike Hacks), where Seth does mountain bike how-to’s, advice, and is currently building an entire mountain bike park in the mountains of western North Carolina.
However, Seth’s story starts out in a way you wouldn’t expect a leading voice in the world of mountain biking to start, BMX riding in Miami. That didn’t stop him though. He picked up his camera and started recording anyway.
Fast forward a handful of years and Seth is using his community's support to build a mountain bike park that will be open to the public.

After surviving an armed robbery attack at the age of 26, Dave was told he’d never walk again. Being stubborn, he proved everyone wrong by getting back on his feet in a surprisingly short amount of time. Unfortunately, a few years later he was hit at a stop light by a drunk driver and forced to start back at square one and learn to walk yet again. Three back surgeries later and years of managing chronic pain with prescriptions left Dave in a state of life that he no longer wanted to live in. Something had to change.
He walked into the pain clinic that had been treating him and told the doctors he would radically change his life and become healthier. He found peace while walking the streets of Philadelphia for exercise and quickly saw the positive impact it was having on him. After hearing about a neighborhood 5k and learning that you can walk the entire way, he set his sights on simply finishing.
It absolutely changed his life. The 5k grew to 10k, and then to a half marathon, and ultimately led him to run the New York City Marathon, which was admittedly one of the best days of his life.
Being a beer lover, Dave wanted to find a healthier alternative to the beers he enjoyed after a long run. A quick internet search led him to a brand new company, Athletic Brewing. He was hooked right away and has been a consistent supporter for the last few years and subsequently joined our ambassador team.
Despite finding running as his therapy of choice and Athletic Brewing as his beer of choice, Dave has still faced a number of challenges that take the same level of tenacity to overcome as the early days.
We hope Dave’s story inspires you to live without compromise.

Back in 2017 while sitting on the couch and watching sports news coverage, Laura noticed the dismal amount of time dedicated to women’s sports. What struck her the most was “the fact that there are more stories about horses than women in the sports pages”. Being a proficient soccer player herself and experiencing the frustrations of minimal coverage and a general lack of opportunities, she decided to do something about it.
A quick Google Maps search and a few emails later, Laura devised a plan to elevate women’s sports higher than it has ever gone, literally. The idea was to gather a group of women to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro and play an official game of soccer near the summit.
The journey became a gathering of 60 women from around the world with referees, goals, etc. all climbing above 18,000 ft. to play a soccer game. Their efforts stand as a Guinness World Record, a testament to their dedication to raising the coverage and opportunity for women in sports, and was the genesis of Equal Playing Field, a non-profit Laura co-founded.
After the success of climbing Kilimanjaro, Laura continued to chase Guinness World Record soccer matches to raise awareness for women in sports and show the world women can do anything. The lowest elevation soccer game was played at the Dead Sea in 2018, and two world records were achieved in France thereafter for the most nationalities represented in a soccer game.
The long-term action Laura has taken is through her startup, Ida Sports, which is aiming to create a soccer boot specific to women, something that has never been done successfully, but something needed due to fundamental differences in men's and women’s feet.
If you learn anything from Laura, it’s that you shouldn’t be afraid of going down a path no one has ever gone before, especially if a better world is on the other side.

Cara has always been a trailblazer. From studying environmental biology in Hawaii to being a wildland firefighter in California, she has always been comfortable on the path less taken. Her intro into the world of brewing was no different.
Wanting to be involved in the lively scene of microbreweries and the energy that surrounds them Cara took what she thought would be a short-term job during a stint in New Jersey before planning to move and do something else. With unforeseen short staffing, Cara was quickly thrown into the brewing process itself. A little help with loading tanks here, a little help pouring hops there and the next she knew, she was brewing beer start to finish...and loved it!
For International Women’s Day, Cara is honoring that can-do spirit by brewing a special Athletic Brewing beer, Trailblazer, with all proceeds benefiting Pink Boots Society. Trailblazer follows a crisp peach nose through cairns of citrus and florals, peaking at a whole new elevation of hops. The descent is smooth and at times bitter, a true taste of success on a trail hard-traveled. And our toast to those who’ve traveled it before and those still blazing their own path.
Find out more about Trailblazer at AthleticBrewing.com.
Our culture is geared to highlight our strengths. From our performances at work, in athletics, to the pictures that ultimately make it on Instagram. We thrive off our showing the world what we’re good at. But what if your weakness is unavoidably apparent and something you absolutely have to reckon with to live without compromise?
Meet Wesley. He was born with a mild form of cerebral palsy which affects his fine motor skills on the right side of his body. The only problem? He finds peace and joy climbing mountains and hiking trails in places that folks with cerebral palsy “aren’t supposed to go”.
He couldn’t let that stop him. His love for the outdoors has led him to climb every mountain in Colorado over 14,000 ft (54 of them), thru-hike the Pacific Crest Trail (2,653 miles) from Mexico to Canada, and has ultimately led to a career in the outdoors through working for the American Hiking Society.
Athletic Brewing is a proud supporter of AHS through our Two For The Trails program. We just launched a brand new Two For The Trails grant program where organizations all over the country can apply to get funding for trail-based projects. As a kid when Marcus wanted to play football and baseball his mom would only allow it after he fulfilled one condition, learn to swim.
Even after excelling at track and football, the foundation of swimming was what Marcus always came back to and also excelled in. He eventually went to college on a track and swimming scholarship, giving him a leg up in the sport of triathlons, which he would soon discover.
Seeing a lack of diversity in the sport for a multitude of reasons, Marcus began to strategically find ways to break down the barriers in his community to create avenues for new folks, especially those of color and minorities, to try and excel in triathlons.
This led him to organize the District Triathlon club in DC as an official 501(c)3. After a handful of successful years growing the community and seeing even more potential, Marcus then decided to start GRIT USA, an adult endurance and multisport development program for triathletes.
Today Marcus splits his time between growing GRIT, pursuing his other goals like the Speed Project, and using his platform in the DC area to continue to be a voice of change, equality, and hope.

The mountains of New Hampshire have brought many exciting experiences to Andrew Drummond. Growing up in the area Andrew has been training his whole life, without knowing it, to be a defining source of knowledge, gear, and stoke for backcountry skiing in the Northeast. After stints skiing and surfing out west, even going up to Alaska to alpine tour, Andrew was ready to come home and spread the stoke in his own backyard.
After refamiliarizing himself with the White Mountains that he still calls home, the constant questioning from like-minded folks wanting to know the best places to go just off the beaten path, as well as folks wanting to dip their toes in this new backcountry craze, led Andrew down a path he never thought he’d lead...retail.
Having opened his shop, Ski the Whites, to help satiate the area’s needs, the growth of community and adventure has only risen as well. Now outfitting folks for skiing, biking, and running, the shop has even begun dabbling in coffee to further meet folks where they are with what they with the focus always being on a solid community.
On top of owning and operating an outfitting company, Andrew serves on the board of the Granite Backcountry Alliance and he joins today to tell us about his journey and impact on and off the mountain.
Enjoy.

After years of being in the biggest road cycling races in the world a devastating and life-altering injury left Pete’s career path felt shaken up and in need of more stability.
Growing up in Colorado and now residing in the Tahoe area, the outdoors were the places he felt at home and at peace. That’s when Pete started to explore the idea of leaving the world of road cycling for the up-and-coming gravel scene. It was a place that accepted newcomers, valued community and good beer, but also gave the edge to not just the fastest riders, but the toughest.
An unlikely full recovery is what even made this dream of going gravel possible. In today’s episode, we’re hearing a story of endurance, optimism, and the power of betting on yourself.

The rugged mountains of Utah, Colorado, and California are usually the homes of the names we see every four years on some of the biggest slopes and stages at the Winter Olympics.
That wasn’t the case for Kaylin. She cut her teeth on a 125 ft. hill in Minnesota, mastering the fundamentals. From those humble beginnings, she advanced her skills enough to represent the U.S. Olympic team twice!
It took living a life without compromise for her to reach the heights she has. Since her “retirement” at 25, she has pursued other interests like being a mom and being featured in eight Warren Miller ski films.
Her story is inspiring and her love for the winter will get you excited for the season!

Chef Cosentino’s story is full of flavor. From the food he cooks to the road his life has traveled, the twists, turns, and details are unconventional and packed with zest.
You may recognize Chris as the winner of Top Chef Masters, a competitor on The Next Iron Chef, and for his appearances on Iron Chef America but his story did not start as one of immediate promise. He struggled as a student with undiagnosed Dyslexia and his first dabblings in the kitchen came from a restaurant not necessarily known for cultivating protégé-level talent, IHOP.
But his story, as you’ll hear, is one that doesn’t follow a predetermined trajectory. A decade of professional cycling later and a love for cooking with the more forgotten parts of animals, Chris has carved quite a niche for himself and his unconventionality makes him a perfect fit for the Athletic Brewing community, a group that fully embraces aiming for what is beyond commonplace.
In celebration of flavor, life, and hard work without compromise, Athletic Brewing has partnered with Chef Cosentino to launch a collaborative beer known as AfterShift. The limited-release IPA is a crisp and complex beer born out of an unlikely camaraderie between chef and brewer—both rule-breakers and taste-makers colluding to bring something to the table like never before.

In the late 2000s, star baseball player Kevin Jordan was fully-committed to preparing for his baseball career either in the pros or at college in Wake Forest. However, right before his senior season started Kevin could feel something was off. His health was declining, his stamina lacking, and after a number of tests, Kevin was diagnosed with ANCA vasculitis. It caused one of his kidneys to function at 8% and he would need a new one fast.
To go from a professional hopeful to having his entire career, and even his life, in jeopardy, Kevin still committed to go to Wake Forest and figure out a solution.
Despite having lost 40lb of muscle, being hours from home, and a freshman on such a large campus, Kevin persisted. That dedication and devotion to being his best was one of the reasons Wake Forest was so excited to recruit Kevin in the first place.
What Kevin needed now though, was a new kidney and everyone around him was coming up as a non-match. That is, until his head coach, Tom Walter, was tested.
We’ll let them tell their story, but know that Kevin and Tom’s story has been told countless times across many platforms. What’s different now is that they are taking their story and turning it into a movement called Get in the Game.
Their aim is to educate, inspire, and empower a generation of young people to take action in their homes, schools, and communities.
Athletic Brewing has partnered with Get in the Game to help bring about their vision where all races, creeds, income levels, and gender identities have equal opportunities and view the world with hope and endless possibility.

He’s joining us near Harpers Ferry, which is recognized as the symbolic halfway point of the trail. He actually called us from a mountaintop after a long day on the trail. You’ll hear the wind, birds, and even a train in the background during the call. Talk about a mid-adventure interview!

Growing up in the woods of Vermont, Ryan felt very comfortable with a lack of “rules” as he and his brother, Matthew, explored the forests, played in the mud, and generally lived free-range.
Ryan’s athletic pursuits eventually led him to the basketball court where he would spend his high school and college years excelling in the sport at a high level. The combination of being comfortable outdoors and the agility that basketball demands led Ryan to excel in the up and coming sport of obstacle course racing and even growing into being a professional in the sport.
Like many professional athletes, Ryan has faced near career-ending injuries, adjustments in focus, and changes in passions. He has since returned his focus to the outdoors and recently accomplished the fastest-known-time of climbing all five of Vermont's 4,000 ft peaks and connecting them by bike!
No matter what sport Ryan decides to focus on, it’s clear that he lives a life Without Compromise and continues to share what he knows with his students and mentees.

John & Bill share some happenings around the breweries as well as some news about our upcoming bike adventure.
The challenge would be to ride a bicycle across Massachusetts and raise money for the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Foundation.

Avery grew up in the midwest, far from the mountains of Colorado that he now calls home. He found running after years of playing basketball and the unique suffering of the sport quickly drew him into longer and longer events. That and the fact he was a broke college student that couldn’t afford a gym membership, running made total sense.
Right as he began garnering big wins and making a name for himself, he and his girlfriend, Sabrina, were struck by a semi on the highway. Avery suffered some major injuries that caused him to rethink his direction in life and if he’d ever get back out on the trail. After an arduous six months, he was able to start to run again.
Fast forward a few years and Avery is now one of the fastest ultrarunners in the world and frequently podiums at iconic races like the Georgia Death Race, Colorado 200, Fat Dog 120, Hurt 100, and dozens more. He finished 6th overall at Western States in 2017.
In 2020, he’ll be attempting an FKT of the legendary Nolan’s 14 Route in Colorado, Tor des Geants in Italy, and the Snowman Race in Bhutan
We hope you enjoy listening to Avery’s story of living Without Compromise.

Joe De Sena is on a mission to get 100 million people off the couch through his company, Spartan, the world’s leading obstacle race. Many of you are probably familiar with Spartan, but might not be familiar with Joe. At his core, he’s an entrepreneur that grew up between his mom, a yogi, and his father, a successful businessman teaching him a balance between hard work and purpose.
That balance, coupled with his intense desire to challenge himself and others, has led Joe to experience some of the harshest conditions on Earth while completing some of the most extreme competitions. His story has taken literally hundreds of interesting turns and his experiences are too vast to capture here.
After a successful career on Wall Street, Joe moved his family to a 700-acre farm in Vermont where they grow organic produce, operate a bed and breakfast, and a general store for Appalachian Trail hikers. This setting was the perfect scenario for the idea of Spartan to be born.
Spartan has now grown into a worldwide phenomenon, with over one million annual participants in more than 40 countries.

Ethan knows what it takes to survive. He’s faced cancer twice, lost his father at the age of 14, had teammates die of AIDS while playing professional soccer in Africa, and has won the reality show Survivor: Africa.
Today Ethan is joining Without Compromise to talk about what it means to survive difficult situations and ultimately use those tragedies for good in a principle he calls “never letting a crisis go to waste”. For example, when he won the $1 million prize for Survivor: Africa he decided to use the money to start Grassroot Soccer, an adolescent health organization that uses the popularity of soccer to educate at-risk youth all over the world. To date, they’ve educated over 2 million young people through their program.

Not many people would go to Alaska during the winter, completely alone, to take care of a team of sled dogs in order to get over a recent divorce. However, that's exactly what Kristin did. That toughness eventually led her to become one of only 29 women to complete both the Iditarod and the Yukon Quest 1000-mile sled dog race, one while pregnant and one while breastfeeding!
Kristin is now remarried and has officially started a new journey, motherhood. She also works as a wilderness planner for Denali National Park and has recently written a book about her experiences, This Much Country, which made the New York Times summer reading list in 2019. It can be found following the link below or pretty much anywhere else you buy books (she asks that you support your local bookstore).
However, today’s episode is not about her life in Alaska. It’s about her and her family making the enormous change to restart their lives in Texas. Listen in to hear about how continuing to live in Alaska would have led to compromise and how a complete change in identity is sometimes the best direction to go.

In this episode, we're hearing nine Athletic Brewing ambassador stories about enduring obstacles and challenges in their lives. It’s a timely episode that captures the essence of the many types of difficulties we all face. Our hope is that it challenges you to think positively about your roadblocks and find a way to endure, without compromise.
Mark is so easy to talk to about all sorts of topics that you forget he’s an iconic freeskier with numerous awards under his belt. In 2005 and 2007 he won the Powder Video Awards for Best Male Performance and is well known by his amazing freeskiing skills that are captured in film through his nearly two-decade relationship with Matchstick Productions. In fact, he’s been featured in every single MSP film for the last 18 years, as well as several Warren Miller and Poor Boyz movies.
It hasn’t gone to his head, though. He started mogul skiing before switching to park competitions and chipping a career out over the years. He says it has humbled him and led to a certain amount of contentment over the years.
He’s incredibly down to earth and always eager to talk about health, longevity, and his used veggie oil-fueled adventure truck. He joins us from his home near Whistler, BC.

If you’ve ever felt limited by your circumstances or physical limitations, today’s episode is a must-listen. Back in 2010, Kyle was sick and tired of feeling terrible about himself and having a hard time playing with his daughter, so he decided to do something about it. Losing a large amount of weight by walking, and eventually running, is no easy task. After taking into account that Kyle is legally blind, the challenge is exponentially greater.
However, that didn’t stop him from pushing forward, crushing limitations, and finding creative ways to exercise and run, without a full view of what was around him. 10 years later Kyle is running ultras on and off-trail, running between 20-25 hours per week, and advocating for folks in his situation through his career.

At a young age, Ben and his parents pedaled all over the US on extended bike tours. He credits these early endurance events as part of the foundation that led to his ability to outlast his opponents in traditional sports. However, it wasn’t until college at the University of Montana in Missoula that Ben discovered triathlons in a book while traveling to Alaska.
Once he got back to school he signed up for the local triathlon and was instantly hooked. Ben immediately set his sights on becoming pro. Since then, Ben has won seven full Ironman races, seven 70.3 Ironman races, came in 2nd in the Ironman World Championship in 2014 and 4th in both 2016 and 2019.

After growing up in Flint, Michigan, Carl learned from a young age that in order to succeed, you need to do things the right way from the beginning. His dedication to perfecting his athleticism eventually led him to a memorable career as a two-time Super Bowl champion and making the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team as a key part of the notorious Big Blue Wrecking Crew defensive line of the New York Giants.
If a successful NFL career wasn’t enough to focus on, Carl founded G III Sports only his second year into his career as a way to pave his future long after football. CEO of G III Sports is a title he still holds today, nearly 25 years after retiring from football.
Carl is also the voice of Giants football hosting both the pregame and play-by-play on the radio.
