Baseball Reminiscence Program- Joe Loglisci, 203-709-0709. joseph@ctnursingservices.com
- The Baseball Reminiscence Program is virtual and began October 28, 2020
- The Program began in 2009-UCONN Professor Michael Ego started it to help dementia patients be more engaged
- Michael went to Scotland to see how a similar program utilizing British FUTBOL was run
- Michael Ego established his program in Greenwich, CT using American Baseball
- The Program opens with the Pledge of Allegiance and continues with baseball references
- Seniors react well to the program, smiling, enjoying it
- 60 percent of participants are women, a goal is to have more men involved
- Joe Loglisci took over the facilitation and structure of the program in 2020
- The format lasts approximately 45 minutes to an hour
- The lesson plans cover spring training, which many audience members have attended in various cities/states
- The World Series is also discussed with specific details including moments in history- participation is aggressive and attendees have shown their true enjoyment
- A "seventh-inning stretch", with the song “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” is included, attendees sing along and remember the lyrics
- The game hangman is also played with answers related to baseball
- The Program design is intended for memory care patients; however, those without cognitive challenges also be joining the program. The idea is to meld the group
- Facilities with whom Joe Loglisci partners have been asked to participate in the launch
- Props may also soon be added to the mix
- Professional players are being considered to join the program and Joe has a contact to discuss with baseball players from the Dominican Republic and the United States
- Michael Ego, at one point, had a group chartered to Shea Stadium and the participants sat in box seats and were given Mets baseball bats to take home
- Joe works with Connecticut Nursing Services, ctnursingservice.com a private duty nursing home care company based in CT, look for them in other states as well
- Joe’s love of baseball began in Stamford, CT in 1978 where he was placed into the Baseball Hall of Fame as athlete of the year. Joe also played in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and became a scout for the New England markets

Today we are talking about Caring for an Elderly Loved One at Home, whether this is new to you or you are anticipating becoming the caregiver for your loved one at home at some point in the near future you will want to listen in to Emily Slattery and I discuss what adult day centers can offer you and your loved one and 3 Tips to Caregiving an Elderly Loved One at Home, to ensure you are keeping them engaged and their brain stimulated while at home. Emily owns Old Glory Days Adult Care Center in Newtown, CT.

- You want your loved one to feel welcome, at ease, belonging
- You need to figure out what makes the recipient of care, happy; what are their interests, hobbies
- Incorporate games, trivia and more, modified for the individual
- Focus-Keep the brain and body active
- Get others involved, try not to handle care for someone by yourself
- Keep recipients of care engaged- have them assist with chores, mail, use common items such as a ball
- Music stays in a person’s brain for a long time
- Make time for yourself as well, providing care can be stressful
- Ask for help
- Determine what stage of memory engagement/loss care is required
- Accommodate the specific person’s needs- it could just be socializing with someone who lives alone
- Explore day centers in advance- take a tour, ask questions, does the location provide what you will need for the recipient- nurses, transportation, activities

Cynthia is an advocate, providing guidance on elders staying at home, or seeking assisted living options, here are some of her suggestions:
- The talk with a parent/parents may require more than one conversation
- Baggage regarding the conversation- might be fear, other factors
- Begin the talk with pen and paper; record what you’re thinking
- Identify the players, before the talk- may include siblings, Attorney- they all need to be on the same page with the person impacted by the decision to move or stay in place
- Identify any challenges- financial, misinformation
- Teachable moments- 911 calls, for example
- Selfless phrases- it is about the person and not whoever begins the discussions
- Choose the correct time for the talk
- In-person tours of locations/virtual tours, and stipulate what is offered- trips, activities, food on offer

I see people, myself included, trying to navigate the challenges of aging: we are being diagnosed with debilitating diseases, our children are leaving to start college and their own families, our parents are needing more and more of our attention or they are dying-creating an environment of grief, our jobs are being taken away and we find ourselves job hunting for the first time in decades and we are challenged with finding a job that is at our experience and pay level, we are getting divorced or our partner has died and we are on our own for the first time and on and on.
Boy, these life events can bring our spirits down, so I wanted to bring helpful, positive information forward to help you and me, the result is The Magnificent Aging Podcast.
Episodes will uncover ways to navigate through the aging process with grace and courage so we never have to feel at a loss and lonely.
This podcast will provide a repository for the exchange of helpful ideas and information via guest experts to help better understand our magnificent aging process.
