I’m Samorn Selim. Welcome to the Career Unicorns - Spark Your Joy Podcast. I’m a lawyer turned career coach on a mission for us to take our careers from dread to joy. Growing up as the daughter of poor Lao refugees, I was the underdog. Against all odds, I made it to a top 10 law school and landed a job in Big Law. As an outsider, I was told that I was lucky to even be there and that I had to pay my dues. After coaching over 1,000 clients, I now realize that the idea that you have to pay your dues and work in a toxic place is a myth. We can face our challenges head on, do work we are passionate about, and work with good people to make a big impact. So even as we struggle, we can find a sense of belonging.
"I didn't care about my job. I didn't care about my career. I cared about my son."
In this deeply personal and courageous episode, we sit down with Deep Lam to discuss the heartbreaking reality of losing her son to suicide. Deep shares the "unthinkable" experience of loss and reveals the subtle signs of isolation that can hide behind high achievement, good grades, and academic success.
If you are a parent, leader, or friend, this conversation is a must-watch to understand how to bridge the gap between "I'm fine" and the truth.

Sabai dee pii mai - Happy Lao New Year. I've been hearing from friends and clients that they're feeling more stressed, anxious, and sometimes depressed.
Given what's going on in the world, it's not a surprise. So instead of the usual interview with guests, this episode is dedicated to reconnecting with our bodies and our breath. - The meditation itself is less than 6 minutes (0.1 billable hours). - If you want to skip straight to the meditation, it starts at 3:16. - If you can't do the full meditation, then do 5 deep breaths (in through the nose, and out through the mouth) first thing in the morning, right before bed, and anytime you're feeling anxious. I promise you'll start to notice a huge difference. Connect with Samorn at www.linkedin.com/in/samornselim. In this episode with Dr. Stephanie J. Wong, we discuss:
Why therapy is important, especially in Asian American Pacific Islander communities where it’s often considered taboo.
How there’s been an increased need for mental health support because of 45’s presidency that has emboldened White Supremacists.
How generational trauma and internalized racism has impacted Asian American Pacific Islander communities, many of these were a direct result of the United State’s involvement in war and colonialism.
With the rise in Anti-Asian hate, what factors to consider for risk, cost, benefit analysis when making decisions, such as going to community events.
How to make therapy more inclusive, especially when the industry is predominantly White, by using lived experiences and cultural humility, not just cultural competency.

This episode was recorded before the Supreme Court made its decision to gut affirmative action. Knowing the make up of the Justices, we had a bad feeling about the ruling. Unfortunately, we were right.
But even so, my conversation with Yusuf left me feeling hopeful about what we can do as individuals, communities, and organizations to create belonging in our personal lives and professional lives.
In this episode, we discuss:
What you can do to make big career changes, and break the glass ceiling to the C-suite as a person of color.
How your life can feel like a series of accidents, and what you can do to make sense of it and be more intentional about it.
How laws banning affirmative action have real devastating consequences, and what you can do as individuals and communities to curb its negative effects.
What you can do to create clear frameworks to support DEIB initiatives and get buy-in from leaders to create effective programs.
Why the NALP reports from today and from 10 years ago show similar statistics and a lack of diversity, and how organizations can identify the gaps and close those gaps.
How you can identify whether folks are leaving because they want to or because they’re not set up for success, and the systemic changes you can make to retain and promote diverse talent.
Why it’s important to intentionally create a mechanical sponsor program in the workplace instead of relying on it to work organically, and how that supports diverse talent to get into leadership roles.
What you can learn from Barber Ranen, and what leaders can do and what organizations can do at the systemic level to not make the same mistakes.
How you can’t leave diversity work at work because your identities are a part of your lives, and what you can do to protect yourself from burnout.

Sabai dee pii mai - Happy Lao New Year. I've been hearing from friends and clients that they're feeling more stressed, anxious, and sometimes depressed.
Given what's going on the world, it's not a surprise. Wars. Gun shootings. Political upheaval. Police brutality. It's a lot.
So instead of the usual interview with guests, this episode is dedicated to reconnecting with our bodies and our breath.
The meditation itself is less than 6 minutes (0.1 billable hours).
If you want to skip straight to the meditation, it starts at 3:16. If you can't do the full meditation, then do 5 deep breaths (in through the nose, and out through the mouth) first thing in the morning, right before bed, and anytime you're feeling anxious. I promise you'll start to notice a huge difference.
