Chatting with the best in the world about what they do

It has become a well-accepted idea that breathwork can improve health, enhance athletic performance, and even help those with mental health issues.

There are so many protocols and devices that it can be overwhelming to know where to begin.

The idea of Respiratory Muscle Training is the foundation of them all, and it's what Breather-Fit does best.

Like training any other body part in the gym, the stronger and more within your control the muscles responsible for your breathing are, the more capable you will be to use them in the way that suits you and your goals best.

The Breather is the world’s first drug-free, evidence-based Inspiratory/Expiratory combined Respiratory Muscle Training (cRMT) device, used by children and adults interested in health, wellness, and human performance.

Shane has such a long list of accolades that it would be silly to list them here. Not only is Shane a 1996 Gymnastic Olympian, but he has a skill on the Parallel Bars named after him!

Lucky for us, Shane has been on the Power Monkey Camp coaching staff for over a decade. Most recently, he has been taking on coaching at our weekend courses for us as well.

We had a great conversation with him about what he sees as common themes and issues among athletes in the functional fitness space who are trying to learn and improve their gymnastics.

For the second year in a row, a group of Power Monkeys decided to get together out in Oregon to take part in the 200-mile relay race that is: The Hood to Coast".

We ran through the night for over 30 hours to tackle this race, and we did it to raise money for the Power Monkey Educational Foundation, which partners with awesome organizations doing incredible work within their communities so that we offer scholarships to bring their community members to the Power Monkey Camp.

We loved everything about this race, the experience, the people, the views, and the purpose behind it all.

How often should you be Training vs Competing? It seems that most of the time when we are in the gym, we see people competing with the person in the lane next to them. But is this the best way to grow and improve as an athlete? Of course the element of competition is important, and can lead to incredible moments, but how often should you be doing it? What is going to lead to the best adaptation, and what is going to reduce the chance of injury or overtraining?

We would love to hear from you.

Our guest is Dr. Craig Heller, a professor of Biological Sciences and Human Biology at Stanford University.

Dr. Heller made an incredible discovery several years ago surrounding the mechanism that drives fatigue and limits physical performance. Since then he has developed a tool that has allowed professional athletes, special operation soldiers, and a host of others to recover faster, and increase performance, almost like they were on steroids.

Behind it all is the concept of localized temperature increase in the muscle, and how Dr. Heller has managed to cool it faster than any other.

This was a fascinating episode that we think you will not only enjoy but that you will walk away from with clear actionable items that you can begin to implement to improve your training right away.

Today's "movement focused" episode revolves around the skill of spotting. We believe that this truly is a skill that is all too often discredited or overlooked outright.

As a coach, having the ability to spot someone correctly serves many purposes. Obviously creating a safe environment is primary, but even at higher levels, the ability to spot an athlete through a movement so that they can feel what their body is supposed to be doing with proper form is so incredibly important. Usually what we see is someone failing rep after rep of a movement while losing ideal body position and technique. This will only serve to engrain that poor technique.

Learn to spot properly, and learn to use spotters liberally. Your technique and body will thank you for it.

Bo has an incredible resume. Dave originally met Bo when he was a Strength Coach for a huge variety of sports at the US Olympic Training Center. Since then, Bo has been the Director of Strength and Conditioning at the UFC, the Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning at the University of Michigan, and he is Currently the Assistant Athletic Director at Texas A&M.

Bo has worked with such a wide variety of different athletic disciplines that it makes his skill set incredibly unique. Talking with him on this podcast was an absolute pleasure, and we really only scratched the surface of the knowledge that he is able to impart. We hope to have him on again in the future.

For our 200th episode, we brought on one of the OG's of CrossFit. Dave Lipson was a multi-time Games Athlete, a professional baseball player, and a long time member of the prestigious CrossFit Seminar Staff. Dave is an absolute wealth of knowledge when it comes to fitness and performance. Most recently, Dave has taken his years of experience and directed them towards his new fitness goals within the world of Bodybuilding.

We spend a large part of the conversation discussing how training for hypertrophy (Muscle Growth) can benefit the functional fitness athlete.

This was a really interesting and fun conversation, and we cant wait to implement more of Dave's ideas into our own training.

Today we welcome Pat Vellner back to the show for his second time. Pat had an incredible season this year, winning WZA on a team, being crowned the Second Fittest Man on Earth at the Games, and most recently winning the Rogue Invitational.

We love having Pat on the show, he is fun to chat with and always speaks with passion and excitement about whatever topic is at hand.

We cover everything from the challenges of parenthood while having two professions, his training, the differences between the Games and Rogue, his involvement in the PFAA and the CrossFit season, and what his thoughts are on what separates the top athletes from the rest.

This was a fun one. Enjoy!

In addition to the plan details, Dave walks us through some of the key principals surrounding what a solid approach to handstand walking looks like, at both the beginner level as well as at the advanced level.

We realized that this is a huge topic, with a lot of nuances to it. We delve into some of the low hanging fruit in this episode with Dr. Mike providing some actionable steps that people can take.

Megan was a world class athlete in maybe one of the most insane sports there is. Imagine flying head first down a sheet of ice at speeds of up to 80 MPH, on essentially a baking tray. That is the sport of Skelton, and Megan was one of the best in the world at it.

There is no surprise that it takes a special mindset to subject yourself to such risk, and to do it at such a high level while managing the undeniable nerves that goes into such an event. Which is why once Megan retired from the sport of Skelton, she found herself drawn to the field of sports psychology, and mental performance. Today Megan is a reputable mental performance coach, and this is where a good portion of our conversation with her centered today.

Julie takes a holistic approach to wellness with her patients, and this is where the bulk of the conversation centered today. She shares some insights and strategies regarding how everyone can be more participatory in their own health, with actionable steps to take.

We also spent some time discussing emotional health, and how important this is when it comes to legitimate health concerns.

We recently had the pleasure of working with both Emma and Jack at a Power Monkey Course in their home town up in Canada. We already knew that both were incredible athletes, Emma having just been crowned the 2nd Fittest Woman on Earth at the 2023 CrossFit Games as an 18 year old, and Jack having put on a show winning the Olympic Total event, also as a young 21 year other athlete.

What we didn't know, and since discovered about them was that they are both quite humble and willing to learn and be coached.

They didn't take an "elite athlete" Power Monkey course, they took the same foundational course that the rest of the gym members did. It is this attitude of always looking for ways to improve oneself, even if it means taking a couple of steps backwards to unlearn old ways and create new better habits that we feel sets the best athletes, and people, apart from the rest.

We hope you enjoy this episode, we sure did. We can't wait until our paths cross with both Emma and Jack next.

We enjoyed having Brian on the podcast so much last time, that we invited him to come out and spend a week with us at our Power Monkey Camp this past September. And surprise! We loved having him there as well!

Brian specifically requested to come back on the podcast because he wanted to talk with us further about his experience at Camp just a few short weeks ago. But what surprised us even more was just how in tune and connected he was with everything that we were doing that week...a feeling that we are sure you will notice when you hear him speak on this episode about his time in Tennessee with us.

Last week, a team of 12 Monkeys (Great movie by the way), descended upon Portland Oregon to tackle a legendary 200-mile relay race from Mt. Hood to the beautiful Oregon coast.

They ran straight through the night. There were laughs, there were tears, there were...moments of delirium. But all in all, what transpired was an incredible 36 hours of overcoming physical and mental adversity, team building, and strengthening of already incredible bonds.

This episode brings just a few of the 12 members on to chat a bit about the experience as a whole, and to highlight a few moments that stood out.

The bottom line is that we ALL should periodically seek out opportunities to challenge ourselves both physically and mentally. It is a healthy act that will not only fortify your resolve but will elevate your happiness, confidence, and sense of purpose as well.

Miguel is a fascinating athlete. His background was initially in gymnastics, where he was dominating. Eventually he grew tired of the rigid nature of the sport. Growing up in Brooklyn, Miquel found himself exposed to the world of Break-Dancing. With his foundation of gymnastics, he took to it and excelled immediately, earning him the nickname "Gravity" for his explosive moves on the dance floor.

Now, as the Olympics are set to introduce Break-Dancing as one of the newest sports in the 2024 Paris Games, Miguel "Gravity" Rosario is posed to not only be one of the first Breakers ever to compete in the Olympics, but he could be one of only two athletes competing who hail from NYC, the birth place of Break-Dancing.

In this special pop-up episode, we are intentionally limiting the discussion to 10 minutes. We are doing so to celebrate Dave's accomplishment of finally chasing down his 8 year goal of holding a 10 minute long freestanding handstand!

And we couldn't be more proud of him. This comes after Dave finally decided to put a structured plan in place to get him from her previous record of 9 minutes and 1 sec, to that 10 minute mark. He thought that this final minute was going to take him 6 months to a year to reach, but it came much quicker, as a reminder to us that consistency and intention in your training is everything.

The 2023 CrossFit Games begins THIS week, and we are excited to have the man behind all of the event programming on to chat. Adrian Bozman is one of our favorites, and not just because he is incredibly talented at what he does, but he is also one of the best humans that we know. We are grateful that he took the time just before flying to Madison to chat with us about the upcoming Games. Of course we wanted to get all the details about what to expect this week, and obviously THAT was off the table, but we did chat about the new more aggressive cuts during competition that are being implemented this year, as well as what its like having THE Dave Castro back to lead the Games team. Mostly though we chatted about Adrians overall philosophy regarding programming and the mindset that he feels an athlete must have to reach their absolute best, not just at the Games, but in life.

We were stoked to have Adrian on again, and we wish the entire Games team all the best this week as they undoubtably will be putting on another incredible event.

On a special episode of the Power Monkey Podcast today, we have the trio of Dave Durante, Chad Vaughn, and Chris Hinshaw discussing the specifics surrounding their creation: Capacity WOD. Capacity WOD is a program designed to supplement your current program in small bite sized chunks. Specifically, this protocol is designed to help athletes improve their ability to recover during and after a workout so that they can increase their overall capacity to do work. Dave, Chris, and Chad have been testing this out for the past 4 years, with much of the methodology coming from Chris' many years of endurance racing. This is not an episode that you will want to miss.

We had the pleasure of speaking with CrossFit Games Athlete James Sprague on this episode of the podcast. James is a young athlete, having competed in the teen division at the Games multiple times. However, what we found most impressive about James is how mature the mental side of his athleticism is. We spoke at length about James ability to masterfully strategize a workout to win in competition (as witness by his most recent appearance at the Zelos Games), as well as how mentally strong he is when it comes to self belief and focusing on his goals and career. For such a young athlete at only 20 years of age, we are really looking forward to seeing what he is capable of in the years to come.

Our first episode with James a few weeks ago lead to a number of follow up conversations and messages from our listeners. So we decided to have him back on for a follow up discussion.

After more than 3 decades of total emersion in the high intensity fitness landscape, James has some controversial insights and takeaways that we discuss with him. Underneath it all, he believes, is the lack of awareness this sort of long term competitive training can have on your physical and cognitive ability as you age. Additionally, how the pursuit of such physical goals should be directed by true and virtuous driving factors rather than those of vanity and ego.

As with episode one, this is a though provoking and respectful conversation, we hope that you get as much out of it as we did.

Whether you are just starting out in your fitness journey or you are an avid workout enthusiast, a jump rope is one of the most essential pieces of equipment you should have in your workout arsenal and I cannot recommend RX Smart Gear jump ropes highly enough.

Not only are they dedicated to constantly improving and challenging the community with their variety of ropes, but they are dedicated to the education when it comes to their ropes and promote proper movement and technique patterns which we love at Power Monkey Fitness.

They’ve recently launched their new Frevo rope, made of a high impact polymer that can withstand a 50# dumbbell impact.

This weeks guest is multi-time CrossFit Games Athlete and Podium finisher, Brent Fikowski. One of the most interesting portions of our conversation, among many, with Brent occurred when we dove into the subject of the "Professional Functional Athlete Association", which Brent is a key contributor for. Essentially Brent, and others, have taken it upon themselves to be a voice for their fellow athletes to help create a safer, more fair, and agreeable experience, both in and out of competition. They have been working hard to tackle safety issues in competition, workout standards, and even monetary compensation for the use of an athletes likeness on retail items being sold by top tier event sponsors. It is a long road, but one that must be done.

We had the pleasure of speaking with Brute Strength coach Matt Torres on this weeks episode. We were also lucky enough to have Matt attend our most recent Power Monkey Camp in the woods of Tennessee, where we got our first chance to really get to know how great of a human he is. Matt is the coach of a handful of the top CrossFit Games athletes out there, including Dallin Pepper, Danielle Brandon, Emma Carey, and others. Matt has a very deliberate and unique approach when it comes to coaching his athletes that comes from years of being an athlete himself and always striving to learn and grow within any opportunity he has had. We truly enjoyed having him and his athletes at camp, as well as getting a chance to have an even more in depth conversation here on the podcast. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

On this episode we are incredible grateful to Victor for sharing with us his story. If you are only familiar with Boz as the Games head judge, then you are about to learn that he is an incredibly articulate, intelligent, and kind human, who put a lot of intentional thought behind this years Games.

We discussed why certain movements were chosen for the 2022 Games, favorite moments for Boz, and lessons learned this year. It became apparent that Boz and Power Monkey have essentially identical philosophies on movement practice, this conversation turned toward how this philosophy impacted his decisions when programming the various events. There are even some nuggets in there about where the programming may go in the future, if you're willing to "read between the lines". We hope you enjoy this episode, we certainly did.

We are incredibly grateful and lucky to now have them both as part of the Power Monkey family, and we are excited for what this partnership will bring.

On todays episode we welcome two of our favorite people on the show. Integrative medicine and Naturopath Dr. Jaime Schehr and M2 Performance Nutrition founder Dr. Mike Molloy. This was an interesting episode in that Jaime and Mike work with somewhat different client demographics. Mike working mostly with fitness enthusiasts and high level CrossFit athletes, and Jaime working with more of a general population group. Regardless of the client base it was enlightening to hear their similarities in approaches to helping their clients perform and feel their absolute best.

Amy was one of the inaugural athletes in the adaptive division at the 2021 CrossFit Games. More impressive than that, Amy only began crossfitting the January before. Amy was born missing her right leg, as such, she falsely believe for the majority of her life that she was simply not athletic, and in many ways did not feel confident as well. What she eventually discovered however was that she was telling herself this falsehood simply out of fear. Since then Amy has continued to prove her old mindset wrong by not just trying things she thought were not possible but by showing a high level of virtuosity in many of the things that she previously thought she couldn't do: CrossFit, Kickboxing, Swimming, etc. And now she is a proud athlete, sponsored by Nike. These days Amy has an incredible attitude and mindset, and we believe all of our listeners will get something of value after listening to her on this episode.

With a love of movement and play, James has always dabbled in all different sports. Most recently he has made his way into the sport of triathlon, gearing up for a full Ironman by years end. Substance abuse is a major problem on the island of Hawaii, particularly amongst the youth. Hawaii hosts the highest rate of methamphetamine use and one of the highest rates of suicide in the nation, with one of the lowest levels of resources available to communities.

The Keala Foundations mission from the very beginning was to create a free and safe place where kids could remain accountable, belong, and know they are loved.

Please join us in helping to raise money for the continued support of the Keala Foundation by registering to run as part of Team Power Monkey this September. All proceeds will go to providing the children on the island free transportation to and from the gym, as well as character building fitness programs, mentors, and education on how to eat healthy and how to remain mentally strong.
