Today Author and parenting expert Michael Grose is here to explain how it all works and how we can use that information to help us parent better.

We use them everyday, to communicate with friends and families, check the weather, catch up on social media and even to turn on appliances in our home. We are living in a world where most children in developed countries have access to everything they need, and in some cases – everything they could possibly want. As a parent managing those expectations and ‘wants’ can be difficult.

The balance between providing for your child and spoiling them can be blurred. At Christmas time, this becomes even more difficult and costly. So how can we make this season become more about togetherness and less about ‘what they are getting’ presents-wise?

To help, we have registered psychologist and parenting educator Dr Vanessa Lapointe joining us on the PakMag Parents Podcast.

Please note during this podcast we will be discussing suicide, and want to issue a trigger warning.

We can all acknowledge the last 18 months have been extremely difficult for so many people, nationwide, worldwide. We’ve seen escalating rates of depression and anxiety, which has seen a rise in people accessing crisis lines and mental health services since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.

It’s great to see people reaching out and seeking help to support their mental wellbeing, alarmingly though young people, who are our most at risk, are less likely than any other age group to seek professional help – making it clear how important and critical our role is in nurturing our children’s mental health.

Joining us today to talk about how we can do that is Dr Dain Heer, author, changemaker, speaker and co-creator of Access Consciousness – one of the world’s largest personal development companies.

On this episode Bree chat's to Paediatrician, health services researcher and co-founder of CanChild Dr Peter Rosenbaum about why we and our children should learn F-words…

As we work together towards a more inclusive society, we wanted to shine a light on a great organisation called CanChild – who’s overarching goal is to maximise the quality of life and participation of children and youth with a variety of developmental conditions, along with their families.

Their research led to The F-words… but they’re not at all like the word you’re probably thinking… although I am sure we’ve got your attention.

Diversity is a fact of life, however teaching children about differences can feel tricky. As adults we can be a little unsure if we’re sending the right message or how to start that conversation, and that puts us off from going there in the first place. However it’s essential for us as parents to teach our children about diversity and inclusion through both conversations and actions.

In this episode Bree chats toJulia Nowland as she explains to us how we can help our children understand the value of inclusivity and to accept those around them for who they are.

In the age of technology, there has been a big shift from how we used to interact and the amount of face-to-face exchanges as opposed to how teens interact in the modern era. There is a significant amount of communication happening over text, messaging apps, social networks etc online.

With that comes concerns over their understanding and command of in-person exchanges. Simply, are Gen Z and generations coming after them, losing their skills on how to communicate in ‘real life’ as opposed to the ‘virtual space’? Are we fighting the inevitable- clinging to the old world, when we should be embracing the new ? Or, do we need to ensure our children learn how to be more present, aware of what their body language is telling others and how looking for cues in others is a huge part of building relationships?

To help us we have Barbara Pease Joining us. Barbara is the most successful relationship author in the business and expert when it comes to body language. She has written with her partner Allan, 18 bestsellers – including 10 number ones – and travelled the world extensively giving seminars in 70 countries.

A lot of people talk about the troublesome teens and how when kids go through puberty and start becoming more independent - they shut out their parents and can develop ‘attitude.’ Every human at every stage of their development, needs understanding. How can we understand these changes and continue to thrive as a family, and stay connected to our tweens and teens during their adolescence?

Joining us to help tackle this topic is Dr Vanessa Lapointe - mother, registered psychologist, parenting educator and best-selling author who has been supporting families and children for almost 20 years.

Did you know that 92% of people don’t achieve their goals, maybe this is because they were never taught how to? The power of goal setting is an important life lesson for our children to learn. It brings purpose, pride and success in their future, so how can we ensure they understand this practice and will continue to aim high?

That’s where internationally-acclaimed, multi-award-winning author, researcher and educator Brian Caswell comes to the rescue as he chats about the 5 principals for improving success and how we can introduce goal setting to our children.

On this episode Bree chats to Dr Robyn Miller who is an Australian medical doctor working in Northern Australia. Upon returning to work after maternity leave, Robyn, like many women, experienced the struggles of the “mental load”. When she couldn’t find any strategies to effectively “off-load” half of this invisible labour to her partner, Robyn drew upon her own skills and experience in neuroscience and organizational management to develop her own, unique strategy. In 2019, she founded The Mental Load Project to help other women to recognize and rebalance the mental load in their relationships.

Now, you may not have heard of The Mental Load – but you are definitely carrying it and today we want to explore how we can unload for a happier and healthier you. Our guest Dr Robyn Miller will help us understand what it is and how we can lessen the burden, by sharing it more equally in our relationships and families.

As our kids grow older their friend group does too, which is great but can also open the door to peer pressure. Every child wants to fit in with their pack and sometimes will do what it takes to feel accepted. As parents it’s our job to keep our child safe, but how can we educate our children about peer pressure without pushing them away further?

Today’s guest has an honours degree in psychology and a masters in Gestalt Therapy. She is the founder of Hey Sigmund, a website dedicated to conveying the science of psychology to the art of being human. I’m pleased to welcome back the lovely Karen Young as we chat about peer pressure and the power of influences.

All these styles of communication will colour the relationship you form with your child and ultimately the relationship they have with themselves.

Screen time is just as controversial these days as letting your child eat junk food. But as with anything there are both pros and cons towards your child and technology.

Regardless of your views upon technology, there will soon be a time when your little one starts to notice these devices and wants one for themselves. But when is the appropriate age to give your child their very own device and is it beneficial or harmful towards them?

This week I chat to our guest Stephanie Centofanti, who is a Psychology Academic at UniSA Online, about what things parents should consider before purchasing a device for their child.

In this episode I welcome back Row Murray to the podcast to chat about the body changes your teen will go through and how we as parents can help them through this changing time.

The teen years are a period of major change: emotionally, hormonally and physically. These changes impact everyone in the family, not just the teen it’s happening to. The great news is that understanding what’s going on gives parents the tools to help everyone cope.

Our world pre-pandemic was a hectic, fast paced lifestyle, and for those who had to hit pause on their action-packed lives, it was hard.

2020 has definitely given us all a bit of a shake up, whether it be job-wise, our daily routine or just a change of perspective on our health. But one thing we did not expect was the shift from parenting in the fast lane to the slow lane.

In this episode I have Joanne Wilson on the show to discuss the effects of this new way of parenting we have come accustom to and how we can keep these changes to carry on into the future post pandemic.

Generation Alpha is the title given to children born after 2010. Not only does this generation reset the generational alphabet, but holds the potential and ability as the first cohort born entirely in the 21st century, giving them an unmatched step ahead into the future.

As parents we tend to project our own personal and generational views into teaching our children, but how damaging is this for generation Alpha and how can we nurture this unique generation to thrive in the future?

Today Dr John Demartini joins us as he discusses the unique challenges parents will face raising these children and the shift that will need to be taken to set them up for their future.

I know for a fact that as parents we are too hard on ourselves. And unfortunately, the criticism we give ourselves dictates how we see ourselves and the world around us. It’s about time we understand and accept who we are and celebrate our true selves.

In this episode I chat to Georgia Murch, who likes to define her-self as a ‘quirky corporate’. During her career, Georgia has learnt that the key to any successful team is people: when they are at their best, the business is too. She has worked with some of the best teams from organisations all around the world and today she joins me on the PakMag Parents podcast to chat about what is holding us back from growing and how we can change the way we feel about our imperfections.

The word sorry and the way we use it matters a lot. Although heartfelt apologies don’t fully erase the hurt, they do express that you care and understand the situation, and that’s important. There have been multiple studies showing how sincere apologies do reduce anger and resentment leading to better relationships.

We all know how to say sorry even from a young age, but how can we teach our children to give a genuine apology that move others whilst leaving them feeling empowered and not humiliated?

In this episode Bree chats with Parent Coach - Rachel Schofield about teaching our children how to take responsibility for their actions and give heartfelt apologies.

So what other games are out there and is this something that could become more common in the future?

In this episode Bree chats to Raelene Knowles who is the COO of the Interactive Games & Entertainment Association (IGEA), about the new use of video games as medicine and the impact of screen time on children’s mental health.

Did you know that 1 in 3 Australia students find tests like Naplan the most stressful part of school. Despite this, one third keep test nerves to themselves and less than 10% confess their nerves to their teacher. So how can we as parents reduce these nerves and what creates this stress to begin with?

Well today’s guest will answer just that and more. She developed an innovative teaching and learning system for an international network of schools and a new school in Hong Kong. This experience has given her a rare insight into what really works for learners of all ages. So let’s welcome Dr Selina Samuels!

In today’s episode we discuss why children need to understand consent and the importance of them having autonomy over their bodies. In today’s world unfortunately, the fears about sexual assault and rape are front of mind for many parents. As our children begin to grow curious in others and build relationships with those around them, parents begin to stress that their child may become a victim or on the other side of the table, a perpetrator. This is why teaching our children about consent and respect at a young age is so crucial.

Today’s guest is the founder and managing director of Safe4Kids, a company which focuses on child abuse prevention education. She is passionate for teaching kids about body safety while empowering them with knowledge to ultimately keep them safe. Today she joins us to chat about how we can teach our children about consent and shares her advice for approaching our children on this topic.

Life is full of transitions – high school to uni, primary school to high school, but arguably one of the most important ones is the transition of starting school. Your child is suddenly introduced to a completely different environment with new children, a new teacher and new things to learn, leading many parents to wonder if their little one is ready for it, and rightly so!

Today’s guest is Julie Dore, she is the author of ‘Prepping for School Success’, a book all about preparing and thriving in the early years. She is passionate about helping children (and parents) be better prepared for school and has been a teacher for 14 years.

Throughout their childhood, kids ask many questions. About anything and everything. Sometimes, they ask things we wish they wouldn’t… because hey, that’s offensive! You can’t say that! However, teaching our kids about taboo topics such as race, diversity and discrimination is incredibly important. However, for parents, it can be difficult for us to navigate these conversations and put answers to their questions into kid-friendly words.

Today’s guest is passionate about covering these topics with children. She understands how important it is to teach these subjects, and has developed a teaching program that covers these taboo topics while being kid-friendly.

As humans, we are constantly learning; even if we are not actively in school or another type of education. Our brains are naturally hungrier for knowledge. This goes for our children as well; especially children under 5, who soak up information like sponges. As much as school helps with learning, home learning is just as important.

Today’s guest is Goodstart Early Learning’s National Research Manager Dr Kate Liley. Having worked in the Early Childhood Sector for many years. She understands and believes that it’s our job as parents and educators to make sure children have the opportunity to talk, read and play, as we are their first teachers for life. Home learning is a strong component in a child’s development, and that is what she is here to talk about today.

How many times have you lovingly prepared a meal for your family, only for you to place it in front of your child and be met with comments like “yuck” or “not this again” or “I hate this” ? It can be pretty disheartening, even if we know not to take it to heart. In fact, a third (31%) of Aussie parents get their feelings hurt thanks to these brutally honest responses.

Today’s guest is here to help you turn that “yuck” into a “yum”. This school lunch box creator has years of experience and is here to share his knowledge. Please welcome George Georgievski!

Maths. You either love it or hate it, right? Universally, it seems to be one of those subjects that many of us aren’t so good at and don’t have very fond memories of when we think back to school. However, it doesn’t need to be this way. Maths is captivating, exciting and can take your child many different places, if you let it be so.

Today we speak to Karen McDaid from Cluey Learning who is an expert in all things Maths and teacher. She has years of experience teaching in primary and high school levels and has a passion for getting kids to enjoy it, because that’s what it should be – fun and interesting.

We’ve all felt it at times. Your heart starts to beat fast, your palms get sweaty and you feel restless. It’s called anxiety, and can be brought up by new situations and challenging tasks, especially in children. Some level of anxiety is a normal part of life and growing up – but when does it become a problem?

Childhood anxiety is very real, and often presents itself differently in children than it does in adults. Today, we’ll explore this topic with Karen Young, a psychologist and author who is passionate about engaging with others on a wide range of topics, including anxiety.

Bullying - it happens every day in schools and is the cause of many tears, angry outbursts and conflict. When our child returns home from school and explains that someone is bullying them, it’s easy to assume negative things about their 'bully'. But did you know bullying is often confused with poor behaviour?

Bullying isn't always what it appears to be, and our guest Andrew Oberthur is here to explain how to differentiate bullying from poor behaviour. We'll also discuss the factors that cause this type of poor behaviour, and how you as a parent can help.

If you parents a child with special needs such as ADHD or Autism, you'll know first hand how challenging it can be. Many parents find it hard to stay positive in situations like this, especially when they are receiving comments on their child's behaviour which is ultimately out of their control.

This episode, Bree speaks to Author, Podcaster, Parenting Coach and all-round awesome Mother, Penny Williams, who dives into the world of parenting a child with special needs.
