I am not a religious person at all, but I’m very spiritual.

And I am learning to follow what my higher power has planned for me, instead of letting fear and ego take the wheel.

It’s not always easy to let go of things. Especially those things you thought you really wanted.

But I’m here to tell you that it is okay to transition, and sometimes that is for the best!

In this final episode, #221, of the Dance Boss Podcast, I talk about my transition from online business coaching to public speaking and what that means for the Dance Boss Podcast. I get transparent about the privilege I have in order to make these transitions. And, I share the path my life is on now and my current interest in life coaching.

Every dancer is different. Every dancer’s needs are different.

A great way to find out what your specific body needs, is through genetic testing.

And for dancers and athletes, DanceRX is bridging that gap between science and dance.

DanceRX is “a health and wellness resource to enable and support the advancement of the dancer’s education through a personalized experience,” and today I get to sit down with the woman behind the idea, Sarah Haslock-Johnson.

In episode #219 of the Dance Boss Podcast, Sarah and I dive deep into the journey she took from idea to actualization. We also talk about the power of networking, challenges Sarah faces in business, some 5-year goals for DanceRX, and much more.

The world needs more dance bosses, and that all comes down to being a leader.

Being a leader in your classroom or studio, in your online dance business, and in your personal life.

We need more dance bosses to bring more people into dance. To remind us that dance is not just for performance, but also just for the sake of dancing.

In episode #218 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I sit down with Natalie Orr, dance teacher and coach for dancers. We talk about what it means to be a leader, the importance of curiosity and exploration, what a coach really does, and so much more.

I also challenge you to think about what you need to give yourself permission to do. And DM me and Natalie on Instagram @erin.pompa and @nataliedanza to let us know!

Are you a dancepreneur who is having a hard time raising your prices?

You want to serve your community and make sure everyone has access.

And you’re so used to working with the bare minimum and being the “starving artist.”

But when you look at the life you want to live, the life you are working toward, that mindset doesn’t actually align with it.

You wonder, “will my community still trust me, if my program is expensive?’

In episode #215 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I sit down with Cynthia Paniagua, dancer, choreographer, and dance educator, and we dive into just that.

We talk:

  • Learning to feel worthy and understand value
  • Mindsets Cynthia had to shift to build her dance business

Have you heard of dance movement therapy?

Before talking to Erica Hornthal, CEO of Chicago Dance Therapy, I had no idea what it really was, but I had so much fun deconstructing her business and I know you will benefit from this conversation.

In episode #214 of the Dance Boss Podcast, Erica and I discuss her online dance business, how it started, and how it has shifted.

We talk:

  • How Erica got into this work and how she knew she was on the right path
  • Meeting community needs instead of using your own judgment
  • How COVID affected her business and shifted her perspective
  • “Balancing” being a mom with running a business
  • And Erica’s new book, Body Aware

Today I am sharing a training workshop I did for DSO Connect in the summer of 2020.

My presentation was originally called “systemizing your dance classroom,” but as I listened to it, I realized that it was really about teaching with intentionality.

In episode #212 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I dive into what it means to be a dance educator, not a dance teacher, differentiating instruction, and creating lesson plans to foster your student’s needs. It is value packed with actionable steps you can use to help make your classes meaningful.

Beginning with the end in mind, like any good meal prep you need a plan.

The same holds true for dance class prep.

Think of the combination as your recipe and the rest of the class (warm-ups, across the floor, etc.) as your ingredients.

In episode #211 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I talk all about scaffolding your dance classes and structuring them in a way that helps students learn deep and also saves you time on the planning end.

I remember when I first started my online dance business, I wanted all the quick fixes.

I wanted a roadmap of the work I needed to do to be successful.

But now I know that there is no map because everyone’s journey is different.

It’s about leaning into what you’re curious about and doing that deep inner work to let the next step come to you, instead of forcing it.

In episode #210 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I sit down with Crystal Nicholls, a professional dancer, Certified Transformational Nutrition Coach (CTNC), and Certified Holistic Health Coach.

We talk about:

  • The importance of having a business coach
  • Perfectionism in the dance world
  • The sense of guilt that artists feel when they want to explore other things
  • And creating space for yourself to grow into other things

How did $15,000 change my business and starving artist mindset?

Do you want to talk about uncomfortable?

Recording this episode was extremely uncomfortable for me because sharing my journey on money is still a bit painful…

But, I’m here to do uncomfortable things so here we go!

In episode #209 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I talk about:

  1. How growing up in an inner city and being an artist impacted my relationship with money
  2. The realization that I could actually afford to invest in my business but, the lack of responsibility I had around my money was what was blocking me
  3. How a $15,000 investment helped release me from the pain I was putting myself through with the way that I was handling my finances

As always I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic. It is conversation that drives growth and I invite that here… So DM me on Instagram @erin.pompa and let me know!

Okay… what we’re not doing here is putting Band-Aids on the problems!

In this episode I WILL NOT be talking about:

  • Reels
  • Hashtags
  • Live video
  • A posting schedule

That stuff is great. But that stuff is not marketing! That stuff enhances your marketing!

In episode #208 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I’m here to give you a cure for the problem.

I share with you three things you can do now to improve your marketing and get your first paid clients:

  1. Know your money and why your program is priced the way it is.
  2. Decide what area of your expertise you want to focus on.
  3. Define how your program solves a problem for a specific person.

Think about all the things you learned in dance.

Teamwork, accountability, flexibility, determination, creativity…

Now think about how these dance skills translate into life skills.

It’s really beautiful when you recognize how dance has shaped your life, even if you’re no longer dancing, and as Brandon Cournay says, it’s boss-level stuff.

In episode #207 of the Dance Boss Podcast, Brandon and I have an amazing conversation about his business Dance Device Lab and how they serve studios nationwide with student-focused, interactive, and engaging in-home events.

We also talk:

  • How the lack of modern and composition in many studio spaces can lead to less creativity and teamwork in students
  • Both the healthy and unhealthy aspects of social media, and it’s importance in business
  • His system for managing teachers and DDL’s back-end structure
  • Building a dance business based on his network and community
  • And much more!

There are a lot of feelings that come with being an entrepreneur.

There are a lot of mental shifts that must be made.

But having a growth mindset, and knowing that mistakes are a part of the process can make those shifts easier.

And listening to your audience can help you take the emotion out of it and make decisions based on data.

In episode #204 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I sit down with Dr. Chelsea Pierotti and we talk about her business, A Passion For Dance, how it started, the iterations it has gone through, and where it is now.

I’m not talking about throwing caution to the wind, walking out of your full-time dance teaching job, and starting your own business…

That’s not what I’m talking about.

What I am talking about is following your intuition, your curiosity, the breadcrumbs, the calling for a different life for yourself…

I stood in front of the dance classroom and I realized I didn’t wanna be a dance teacher anymore. The transition didn’t happen overnight.

It was a 5-year journey of me leaning into what I felt called to do next.

In episode #203 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I dive into how to start laying the foundation for the life and dance business you have been called to create while working your dance teaching job full-time.

Imagine putting something out into the universe and the universe giving you exactly what you need.

Imagine thinking you couldn’t do something and then finding a way to do it.

Wanting to be a part of the dance world but not knowing how, and then learning that you can be a choreographer, even a dancer too!

Wanting to make a dance film and then meeting a bunch of people who can help you do just that at a Christmas party…

The gap between wanting to do something and actually doing that thing can be scary, but you can push past fear!

And in episode #201 of the Dance Boss Podcast, we talk about how.

In this episode, I sit with director and choreographer, Caroline Liviakis, and we talk about how to direct and choreograph a dance film.

On a TikTok video, Elizabeth Gilbert (Author of Eat, Pray, Love & Big Magic) differentiated between hobby, job, career, vocation…

This rocked my mind and confirmed to me even more that I am a person who wants, is determined, and is driven to use my vocation to change lives.

And this drive I have is so in alignment with the work that I do with my clients.

My clients feel called to create the programs they create based on the experiences they have had in life.

It brings me so much joy to be a vessel that allows dance professionals to see possibilities, and to create programs that impact the dance community beyond technique.

In episode #199 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I dive into this and so much more!

After you listen, head on over to Instagram and DM me @erinpride and let me know your biggest takeaway.

Deciding to start my online dance business while working full-time showed me that I could do hard things.

And it has nothing to do with money…

I also dive into the inner workings of DancePreneur Academy, my 6-month group program, where I help you, the dance professional, identify your area of specialty, create a group program based on that area specialty, and start generating 5K months in your online dance business.

Nothing is guaranteed and you are going to fail.

Failure is inevitable.

This might not be the marketing tactic that you want to hear, but it is the truth, my friend!

You cannot do things, make decisions, start something or not start something based on the fact that you may fail or because the outcome you want is not guaranteed.

I know you might not be able to see this now, but it is the failure that is a gift. It is failure that shows you how you need to improve on your life and business journey.

It is the “nothing being guaranteed” that is the fire that lights your a** to keep going.

In episode #197 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I talk:

  • How to reframe failure.
  • How not having a guarantee in life actually serves you, not hurts you.
  • 3 ways your business could actually fail and how to avoid them.

Do me a solid. If you found this episode useful, I would love to know your #1 takeaway. DM me on Instagram @erinpride and lmk.

Are you running from the thing because you want it to be easy?

Listen, I have run from things and I have buried them.

I thought that burying them, hiding from them, and not letting them see the light of day was protecting me.

But, what was actually happening when I buried these things was pain.

My self-worth was affected, my relationships were affected, my day-to-day life was affected…

And it wasn’t until I became courageous enough to face the things that I wanted to hide from that I began enjoying who I am as a person and in life.

Now don’t get me wrong there are things in my life that I am not ready to face and that is OK but, what matters is that I am willing to face them when the time is right.

Some of you are settling for a lesser version of yourself because you are running from the hard work.

You are full of potential my friend and just because getting to where you want to in life looks like it’s going to be hard, and probably is going to be hard doesn’t mean that it’s not worth doing.

It doesn’t mean you are not capable of doing it. Stop letting hard be your internal excuse!

In episode #196 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I sit down with the creator of Embodied Dance, Allison Pagano, and we have an amazing conversation about hearing the calling and doing the hard work.

We also talk:

  • Allison’s background in dance
  • Embodied Dance, how it started, and how far it has come
  • Growing through discomfort
  • And following messages from your heart no matter what society says

Now head on over to Instagram, DM me @erinpride, and tell me what are you ready to stop running from?

We misuse the word hard so often.

Hard does not mean impossible. Hard does not mean being out of reach.

But that’s what we mean when we say it.

Hard is defined as demanding great exertion or effort.

So what you are really saying to yourself is that starting an online dance business will require me to exert great effort so I am not going to do it.

If that sounds like you then this episode is for you!

In episode #195 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I talk about the difference between the hard and the how, and I give you some steps you can take to take hard out of the equation when building your online dance business.

I was on a call with a woman that is interested in joining DancePreneur Academy and she had this feeling of “why can’t I just be satisfied…”

This topic is so close to my heart because this is what I felt when I no longer wanted to run my high school dance program.

I know growth doesn’t happen in isolation so if I was feeling this and if she could identify with it, I have a feeling that someone out there listening can too!

In episode #194 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I dive into moving through the shame, guilt, and fear that comes up when you are no longer happy with your current situation.

Can you identify with anything that I shared? If so, head on over to IG and DM me @erinpride and lmk.

I was teaching for about 10 years when I realized that I didn’t want to teach anymore.

I remember it so vividly…

The bell rings. The students come in. They go in the back and change. And my stomach is in knots!

I felt so uncomfortable because for the first time I totally and completely understood that I did not want to teach dance anymore!

It had nothing to do with my students. It had nothing to do with the school.

It had everything to do with me. I just didn’t want to do it anymore.

And in episode #193 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I dive into why. I talk about the events that led up to creating my online dance business and the internal and external difficulties I faced.

I also talk:

  • How I transitioned from running a high school dance program for 15ish years to working for myself and running an online dance business.
  • The biggest lessons learned as I began exploring what else I could do with my life.
  • The core values I acquired on my journey of realizing I no longer wanted to teach dance, not knowing what else I could do, and leaving my full-time job and working for myself.

After you listen, head on over to IG and DM me @erinpride and lmk your biggest takeaway.

I remember putting in my resignation for my full-time dance teacher job.

I was worried!

I worried about what I would do without those full-time benefits that had been sustaining me for fifteen years.

I worried about if my online dance business would have the impact and profit that I wanted it to have.

And I worried about what my family would think of me. Especially my parents.

But I had to do what was best for me.

I had to stop making decisions based on what other people wanted for me.

I had to step out on faith and take responsibility for doing what I wanted.

And you have the power to do that too!

In episode #191 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I sit down with Galit Friedlander and we dive into this even more! We talk:

In episode #190 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I talk about how serving 1:1 clients in your online dance business may be affecting major areas of your life.

After you listen, take this assessment to see if that’s true for you.

Give each question a score of 1, 2, or 3:

1 - This is me

2 - Somewhat me

3 - Not me at all

  1. I am stressed if my dance clients don’t reach success. I am questioning my worth and my business, and I am afraid I am a fraud.
  2. My relationships are being affected because I have no time to nurture them. I am spending all of my time individually catering to my dance clients, checking work, and carrying the emotional weight of my clients.
  3. I am helping so many dancers solve so many different kinds of problems that I don’t have time for myself.
  4. My business does not feel like it can grow because I have no more time or energy to give it emotionally.
  5. I don’t have time to take on more clients, but I desire more revenue.

Now add up your points.

If your score was:

1-10 —> I have been exactly where you are. It’s time to make a decision about what behaviors you are willing to change to reach your goal.

11-15 —> You are in a good place, my friend. You seem to have stability in your life and feel at peace. I am excited for you!

I’d love to know your score! Send it to me in a DM on Instagram @erinpride

When I started my online dance business I wanted nothing more than to be successful! I started my business because I wanted an escape from the constraints of a 9-to-5/teaching job!

And when I first started my business I was moving from a place of creativity – everything I did was motivated by feelings. What I felt when I saw something, and mimicking that thing because it felt right at the time…

But, moving from this creative space left me feeling unclear, chaotic, messy, and organized.

And I was actually blocking myself from creativity in my business because I lacked structure.

In episode #185 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I dive into some actions you can take to gain structure in your online dance business so that you can start to bring in money, have peace of mind, and unlock creativity you never knew existed.

After you listen, I would love to know what your thoughts were. Hit me up on Instagram @erinpride and let me know.

There are so many fears we have when first starting a business. We think we aren’t good enough, smart enough, our offer isn’t valuable enough, etc.

When I first started my online dance business, I had this fear.

I don’t have a business degree. How can I be a business coach? Who am I to want this kind of life?

But I learned that my experiences are valuable and that my limiting beliefs were the only things holding me back.

In episode #184 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I introduce you to a client I’m working with right now, Savanna Svoboda and we dive into:

  • Fears she faced around thinking she wasn’t qualified enough
  • Who she needed to become to release this fear and build a program that was in her heart
  • And the changes that have happened since releasing this fear

After you listen, head over to Instagram and tag me @erinpride and let me know if you can relate to any of these limiting beliefs.

You know you need to raise your prices, but…

You haven't seen success with your low-priced offers so you don’t believe you can have success with a higher-priced offer.

You do not feel worthy.

You don’t feel like your program is worth more money, and it might not be, but in this episode, I talk about how to change that!

In episode #179 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I dive into the action steps you can take to connect to your worth and begin to be bold, claiming what you want for your life and finances.

Today you plan the heck out of your dance class!

You have your music ready, your counts, your exercises… everything.

Then you walk into the class and everything changes!

You make the choreography a little easier or more difficult. You switch counts.

Or you may decide to scrap your lesson altogether and meditate with your students because the energy is just off.

Has that ever happened to you? Adjusting your lesson because of student interaction…

It’s a shame that in the online space people make it seem so easy. And, it’s misleading!

It’s not easy, but getting your clients results and seeing their transitions is rewarding!

In episode #178 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I dive into:

  • How your values as a Dance Educator/dance professional might be getting diluted
  • How pre-recorded video for your online dance program may be affecting your revenue and integrity
  • How I help my clients create a curriculum that is results-driven instead of “them”-driven

So tell me friend, have you ever taken a pre-recorded course for your online dance business? Did you finish it? And what did you think about it? Tag me on IG @erinpride and let me know!

Are you hiding from your calling and not sharing your value?

And let me clarify when I say hiding from your calling. I mean hiding from the discomfort.

It’s usually the discomfort that pushes us into what we are called to be in the next season.

It was the discomfort of being at my job, realizing I didn’t want to be there anymore that propelled me into my next calling of starting my online dance business.

In episode #177 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I challenge you to ask yourself the question: am I really too busy or am I hiding from the discomfort of discovering my calling?

I talk:

  • Excuses you are making that are causing you not to take action
  • What you’re afraid of
  • What you have to lose
  • And what not taking action will cost you, emotionally and financially

After you listen to the episode head on over to Instagram, tag me @erinpride and let me know if you’re really too busy or if you’re hiding from the discomfort of discovering your calling?

Will you answer the call?

When the pandemic hit the Universe (I say God) whispered into many people's ears showing us there was another way to live.

Answering this call comes with darkness we must face because it is that darkness that makes the light so much more enjoyable!

In episode #176 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I dive into the darkness I faced when first starting my online dance business and what I did to find the light.

I talk:

  • Feeling the call to leave my full-time dance teaching job
  • Being broke and not managing my money well
  • Fear of what others would think
  • Guilt
  • How I overcame these challenges
  • The lessons I learned
  • And how all of this brought me to creating DancePreneur Academy

Have you niched down in your online dance business?

When many people in the online space talk about niching down they are talking about niching down on their person. They’re describing demographics.

But the other part of niching down has to do with the problem you solve and the unique way you solve it.

If you’re confused, don’t worry. Get ready to take notes because this one is jam-packed!

In episode #175 of the Dance Boss Podcast I dive into:

  1. The mainstream way of niching down vs the money-making way of niching down
  2. Why you need to stop hiding behind “inclusivity”
  3. Diluting your gifts by offering too many things to too many people
  4. What actions you can take to clarify your niche and make money

So tell me, have you niched down your person, problem, and solution?

What impact has being an artist had on your life?

As I reflect on my business growth journey and the challenges I had, I see parallels between what I was struggling with and what the impact of being an artist had on my life.

My relationship with money, how I price services, how I feel about volunteer work, etc.

I had to shift my perspectives and unlearn a lot in order to create my own definition of success in business.

In episode #173 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I dive into having an artist mindset with money in your online dance business.

I talk:

  • Money
  • Our relationship to money as creatives
  • Blocks that can arise when you start making money and raising your prices

When 11-year-old Charlie Herb decided that she wanted to be a dancer, her mom Kali decided to get as much information as she could on the dance world.

All feedback is not equal.

Sometimes the people offering the feedback or suggestions are not the people you really want to work with.

  • How to get clarity on what you should be creating

Ever wonder if you should change your social media strategy?

Many online dance business owners believe they need a social media strategy to help them to post more frequently and this, in turn, will help them make sales. They believe they can get this from copy and paste content templates. But they end up teaching their audience “how” instead of “why.”

But here’s the thing:

People buy, not because you give them the”'how,” but when you show them why it is needed, why it will change their life, and why it will get them to think differently, believe differently, and act differently.

In episode #167 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I dive into:

  • The problem with "copy and paste" content
  • The gaps in your audience's thought process. What is missing?
  • Finding your voice
  • How to become a pioneer in your field

After you listen, hit me up on Instagram @erinpride and let me know, do you need to change your social media strategy?

“Fear has limited so much of my life. I’m walking straight through it now”

This is a message my client sent me.

I was moved by this because I know what it’s like to be consumed by fear.

I know what it’s like to be in fear because what you want seems so far away.

I know what it’s like to be in fear because the life you have dreamt of has begun to arrive and you constantly think to yourself, “When is something going to go wrong? I don’t deserve life to be good for me…”

And I know what it’s like to be in fear because you used to be self-destructive without a care in the world and now you are God Conscious and see how precious every moment is. And you don’t want to lose it.

We can not avoid fear, but we can build the muscle to identify it and not let it run the show in our lives.

In episode # 166 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I talk about getting specific about what you do, admitting what you don’t know, and gaining the knowledge you need so you can grow and bet on yourself.

Are you betting on yourself? Or is fear s**t talking you out of your potential?

Tag me on IG @erinpride and tell me what you are done letting fear sh**t talk you out of. I’ll go first...

What makes a successful online dance business?

It’s less about your logo and your website and all those exterior parts...

And more about your thoughts and beliefs around what it is you do and communicating that effectively to your principal dancer (aka ideal clients).

When you shift your thoughts, beliefs, and actions, you create a new pathway! A new pathway = your principal dancer seeing what's possible by investing in what you offer.

In episode #165 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I talk about shifting your focus to who you need to become to build a profitable and impactful online dance business:

  • A sophisticated business owner
  • An effective marketer
  • A skilled message emoter
  • And someone dedicated to creating a curriculum that is a proven process.

So tell me, are you focusing on the exterior or interior of your online dance business?

Let’s face it, mental abuse in our dance education system is alive and kicking!

When I was in school, we were taught to strive for perfection, compare ourselves to our peers, and give our lives over to dance, forsaking anything else.

We weren’t taught to advocate for ourselves, make a budget, plan our days, or even how to stay motivated.

I can’t lie. I learned this way, so when I started teaching, I taught this way.

But I soon realized that fear-based teaching didn’t work for me. I didn’t feel good about my relationship with my students, and we all were burned out.

So instead of using fear, I started teaching confidence!

I realized that I have the power to create dance companies that empower, support, and motivate dancers to be their best selves mentally and physically.

You have that power too!

In episode #146 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I sit down with Susanne Puerschel and we have a fantastic conversation about her life and her newest company R.I.S.E. Media, a platform and community that helps performing artists and companies generate multiple streams of income, building sustainability, and financial and artistic freedom.

We also talk:

  • The importance of having a coach and asking for help
  • Knowing and owning your superpowers without shame
  • Differences between how the arts are valued in Europe and America
  • And so much more!

I was amazed by the parallels in both Susanne’s and my story, especially when we spoke about the many shifts she had to make before finding what felt good for her life.

There will be some things that we have to release, and there will be some things that we have to embrace in order to build the lives that we want.

So tell me friend, what do you need to release to build the life you want?

Why is market research so important in my online dance business?

I get this question from clients all the time.

Here’s what I tell them:

You don’t really know what your audience wants unless you ask them.

Market research can guide you if you let it, and today I have a great example of that.

In episode #163 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I sit down with Gina McFadden, author, wellness coach, dance educator and yoga instructor. We dive into Gina’s upcoming book, why she is writing it, her writing process, and who it is for.

We also talk about Gina’s first plans for the book, and how she allowed market research to change that direction so she could better serve her community.

Gina also gives us a relaxing, uplifting meditation freebie. Click here to check it out and, “see yourself accomplishing your dance goals while tapping into your inner joy.”

I grew up in an inner-city.

And I know what it’s like not to be privy to certain opportunities...

Years later I started teaching in an inner-city school.

So I bend over backward for my students.

And other people like me who teach in urban communities and love their students, know the challenge of bending over backward to get them opportunities.

It touches my heart whenever I meet people who give of themselves and create opportunities to help others. Today’s guest is one of those people.

Come on in, the water is fine!

Small things? Not for me!

There was a time when I could do none of these things. Or I did them with tremendous fear about what was in my bank account.

There was a time when I had to ask my parents for money and I was older than I would like to admit.

There was a time when the idea of doing anything extra for myself or those I love meant I had to cut back on something that I needed.

Living this way was painful and I honestly didn’t think another way was possible.

Then I started to surround myself with people who charged more, based their prices on the lives they wanted to live instead of guilt, and did it while delivering exceptional services!

And then the question turned from why me? To why not me?

I can’t even believe I’m here! Even more so I can’t even believe that I believe I deserve to be here!

So come on in my friend, the water is fine.

In episode #160 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I share a framework that I use with my clients to help them price their services and some perspective shifts that can help you release those old, incorrect beliefs about how we as dancers should price our services.

Now tell me, is guilt holding you back from charging what you need to live the life you want? Tag me on IG @erinpride and let me know!

Do you remember going to those dance conventions as a student?

The highs you felt, being around all your friends, giggling and enjoying the moment.

And the lows you felt when the dance instructor called you out for doing a sloppy chassé.

Now, I’m not saying that we shouldn’t hold our students (or clients) accountable for what we have taught them.

We should!

But, we should also lead with grace and motivate them not to just be good dancers, but good human beings as well.

In episode #159 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I chat with Emily Rossetti and we talk all about her dance convention, Zero Gravity the Experience. We dive into:

  • How she came up with this idea and how it will be different from other competition-based conventions
  • The steps she took to bring it to life
  • And, the importance of delegating and knowing you can’t do it all

Do you have anxiety around niching down?

It’s like in dance class when a student isn’t executing a tendu devant property...

Example 1:

Teacher: point your toe hard

Student: 🤷🏽‍♀️

Example 2:

Teacher: lead with your heel, massage your toes on the floor, extend through the top of your ankle

Student: 💡

The same goes for niching down!

When you are vague people can’t connect the dots and in return, sales suffer. Just like when you are vague in giving a correction and student growth suffers.

When you are specific with your niche you are giving people a pathway to see if what you offer is actually what they need.

In episode #158 of the Dance Bos Podcast, I tell my story about when I first started my online dance business and was trying to serve everyone.

I also talk:

  • Fears behind niching down
  • Why niching down is so important
  • And, understand the difference between niching, messaging, positioning

Now tag me on IG @erinpride and tell me, do you have anxiety around niching down in your online dance business?

How do you know your dance business is ready for a Culture Code reboot?

Ask yourself a few questions…

What are your values?

How do YOU define them?

How do you use them?

You may be having trouble answering these questions, and that’s okay. When I first started out I had trouble too.

But I realized that my core values are what lead me. They guide me in things like who I choose to work with, how I hold myself accountable, and how I make tough decisions.

If you are having trouble answering these questions, I have someone you should talk to.

Ali Phillips is the founder of Bust A Move Dance (BAMD), a leading dance company for children, teens and adults with disabilities, and a Culture Coach for small businesses in redefining their feedback culture.

In episode # 157 of the Dance Boss Podcast we talk:

  • BAMD, how it started and how it grew as Ali grew
  • Ali’s philosophy and training
  • The importance of knowing your core values, being able to define them, and operationalize them
  • And holding yourself accountable

Ali also shares her Values Discovery FREEBIE! Make sure you check it out.

You may identify as a dance specialist.

OR

You may be thinking… “WTF is that?!”

OR

You might be thinking… “Hmmm, dance specialist is a bold claim for me!”

On the baseline level, a dance specialist is anyone who specializes in an area of expertise in the dance community that helps dancers or non-dancers reach a specific result.

An area of expertise is something you’ve been technically training in, academically studying for years, or personally experienced through the years.

Every dancer has an area of expertise they specialize in.

You may even have many areas of expertise, but some are more developed than others.

In episode #156 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I dive into this further. I also talk about a mindset shift I want you to make: shifting from “I offer dance classes online for everyone” to “I am a specialist in this area of expertise.”

So tell me, do you identify as a dance specialist? If yes, what’s your area of expertise? If no, what’s stopping you? Hit me up on IG @erinpride and let me know.

I love it when they call me Mrs. Pompa.

NAME CHANGE ALERT!

I’m taking my husbands’ name both personally and professionally. And I want you to know this was a f**kin hard decision.

Not because I don’t love him, but because I have worked my ass off building a brand based on my name: Erin Pride.

When thinking through this decision I found myself in fear.

  • Will people be able to find me?
  • Will my new name roll off of tongues with ease?
  • It’s going to be so much work changing all the backend in my business with my new name. Can I handle it?
  • Am I giving up what I have worked so hard to build?
  • Will people think I’m weak for not keeping my last name?

This is the sh** that went through my head and still does from time to time. And I know I’m not the only one so this is why I share it.

So how did I come to my decision to take my husband’s last name professionally?

In episode #155 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I dive further into this. I also share some other ways women have changed or not changed their names.

I knew that to fully embody my marriage, changing my name in both aspects would feel the best for ME. And that’s all it really comes down to. What feels good for YOU!

So tell me, did you take your partner’s name professionally? Was it an easy transition for you emotionally? Tag me on IG @erinpride and talk to me about it.

What happens in that space between thought and action?

Between having that idea and making that phone call, or writing that proposal, or talking to that person.

Most ideas die because of doubt. Thinking we’re not good enough or we don’t have the experience, or whatever it is.

We think we’re missing a piece of the puzzle, but what we’re really missing is positivity… faith… hope!

In this special episode #153 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I have the pleasure of speaking with Susan Slotnick, visual artist, choreographer, dancer, writer, and social justice volunteer. Susan brings the joy of dance to those who wouldn’t normally be privy to it, like incarcerated men and boys, and she has always seen dance as a way to heal!

We talk about:

  • Susan’s journey and early interest in social justice
  • Her book, Flight: The Dance of Freedom
  • Having a let-me-in attitude
  • And, navigating the space between thought and action

So tell me, friend, what is holding you back from taking that first step toward a thriving business?

Let’s talk about the word “boss.”

How do you define it?

Some people see it as being a puppeteer, manipulating puppets.

Others view it more like a tree, with deep roots all working together to grow and bear fresh fruit.

To be very honest, I used to think of it (and myself) like a shadow hovering over my team, watching their every move.

But in this episode, I have a major mindset shift on this topic and I am so excited to share it with you!

In episode # 152 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I have the pleasure of introducing to you Jessica Fox, creator, director, teacher, guide, innovator, and boss. Jessica is the Founder/Artistic Director of 4th Avenue Arts, an educational learning environment that supports performing arts including theater, dance studios, and space for continuous growth!

We talk about:

  • The idea of jumping,
  • Why not me,
  • Building a team,
  • And owning the word boss

Head over to IG @erinpride and tell me what you think of the word “boss.” Then listen to the episode and tell me again after. Let’s see if it’s changed.

We are celebrating 150 episodes of the Dance Boss Podcast!

Can you believe it?

I mean, let’s face the honest truth…

That is my story and in this special episode, I dive much deeper.

In episode #150 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I introduce to you my person, my man, (and when you hear this we will be married, so) my husband! We share insight into us, our perspectives on life and business, and what it was like when I first started my business from his angle.

I NEVER thought I wanted to be a teacher!

You see, I got my dream job when I was 34, with Pilobolus!

I was on tour and it was an amazing experience, but...

It honestly sucked.

I was the oldest one there.

It was hard on my body.

I didn’t really want to do it.

I came to the realization that I didn’t want to train in that way anymore.

And that led to a whole transition of breaking up with this idea of being an active dancer.

Long story short, I leaned into education and I fell in love with it. My students lit me up and my soul feels connected on a bigger level!

In episode # 149 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I share an interview I did for the Background Dancer Podcast with Jason Yap. Jason and I dive into my transition from student to dancer to entrepreneur, the hardships I had to face to start my online dance business, and the many mindset shifts I had to make to grow my business.

Calling all dance moms out there.

This episode is for you!

You know what it’s like…you grew up dancing and you still love dance. Now you have a child or multiple children who dance in a studio setting.

It’s a week before the recital. You’re just getting around to opening the dozens of costumes with their hundreds of hairpieces and you’re missing one whole costume and half of another one.

So you run to the studio with your tail between your legs, feeling ashamed and defeated, and try to salvage the situation as much as possible.

Sometimes someone works some magic and it all works out.

But those other times… let’s just say it doesn’t work out.

What if there was a better, easier way to keep track of everything?

Cue my guest, Laura Caulin, founder of CMeShine, an app and community to organize and streamline your dance studio.

In episode #148 of the Dance Boss Podcast, Laura and I talk about how CMeShine came to life, how she mixed her tech and dance backgrounds, and how when she wasn’t sure what to do, she asked for help!

And because she asked for help she is now bringing her idea to life!

If you are like Laura, with an amazing online dance business idea in your head but no idea where to start, hit me up on IG @erinpride and let’s chat it out.

And, go check out CMeShine today!

How do you respond when someone gives you a gift?

Do you:

  1. Feel guilty and say something like… “Oh you shouldn’t have!”
  2. Scream, “thank you!” full of gratitude…
  3. Do something in-between...

You see, when someone gives you a gift, yes the gift is for you, but it’s more about the exchange of value.

You receive a gift, and the person offering you that gift receives your gratitude.

And it’s the same thing with your online dance business.

You created something that is valuable to your audience. You shouldn’t feel guilty for charging for it.

We have to change our mindsets from the starving artist to the abundant artist.

In episode #147 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I dive into this further with Steve Mastroianni, dedicated father, husband, coach, student, philanthropist, and author of the new book Hobby Boss. We also talk about monetizing your gifts and balancing all the different aspects of your life in a holistic way.

So tell me, which kind of gift-receiver are you? Tag me on IG @erinpride and let me know!

A little over 4 years ago I felt like I was drowning.

I was uncomfortable, and not fulfilled.

My self worth was based on what others thought of me, and how I wanted to be perceived.

"As long as the outside is packaged nicely, little needs to be done on the inside." This was the subconscious lie I was telling myself, because I didn't want to do the work, or more so didn't know how to...

This mindset pinwheeled into viewing what others did, accomplished, and posted, and setting up unrealistic guidelines for my life...

You must be married by 35

You must be a certain weight

You must work a certain job

You must say certain things, around certain people

You must create work like

You must

You must

You must

And then God did something that changed the course of my life forever…

Broke me down, to the lowest point I had ever been.

I had two choices: fade away into misery, or open myself up to messages, and do the work.

I am grateful every freaking day that I chose the latter!

And as a result, I am experiencing shifts in my life I never thought possible.

Is it easy? No! Is it messy? Of course. But, is it worth it? Absolutely!

Why do I bring this up you may ask?

Because I see too many amazing, gifted, people doing things from a place of "YOU MUST", I see emptiness being carried around.

God whispered on your soul for a reason.

And, in episode #146 of the Dance Boss Podcast I share my story like I never have before. I dive into my “people pleasing” and destructive behaviors and some of the many mindset shifts I had to make to build my online dance business.

Tell me friend what "you must" are you letting go of to create space for your greatness to shine through?

I made a lot of mistakes when I first started my online dance business.

And I see all of those same mistakes with my clients.

So, in this BONUS episode of the Dance Boss Podcast, I dive into the top 5 mistakes I see online dance owners make:

  1. Being way too creative and not clear enough.
  2. Having no clue what you're doing, and figuring it out along the way.
  3. Not legalizing your business.
  4. Not showing up on social media.
  5. Doing too damn much all at once!

“It’s not working!”

I hear this all the time.

When I work with clients I find that their “ it’s not working” beliefs stem from one of the reasons below…

Are you:

  1. The Staller

I had a client the other day who said “Erin I think I have to go back to my market research. I think something is missing. Before I move on to creating my framework.”

Now, I’m a seasoned enough coach to spot when someone wants to go back to the beginning in order to put off the scary work they are headed into doing.

Oftentimes you feel like something isn’t working because you’re using that to avoid the work that you are about to step into doing.

  1. The Perfectionist

I have another client who loves everything to be perfect.

And I know perfectionism all too well! The minute I was able to look at my business as an experiment instead of reaching for perfection, the more progress I was able to make.

Oftentimes in your business, you feel like something isn’t working because you think it should be perfect in order to work, but that ain’t it kid. That ain’t it!

Do you expect your students to be perfect in dance class? (If you do, you’re not my kind of dance teacher). Of course not! You expect them to put in effort, make mistakes, get up and try again! So why don’t you give yourself the same grace?

  1. The All at Once Builder

I have had clients who wanted to build out multiple online dance businesses at one time. In the early stages of my business I allowed this, but now that is a NO go.

If you feel like your online dance business isn’t working it may have something to do with the fact that you are unsure how to build one business well, and building multiple businesses without knowing how to do it well can be a recipe for “it isn’t working.”

So my friend, it’s not that your business isn’t working, it’s the fact that you may be self sabotaging...

In episode #145 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I dive further into these “it’s not working,” mindsets and give you some small business tips to get through the self sabotage.

Tag me on IG @erinpride and let me know... who do you identify with?

  1. The Staller

I was sitting at my computer with 1 million tabs open on my internet browser (not that many, but you get it) because I was trying to find many answers to many questions to bring the vision I had to life.

You see, I’m the type of person who has an “I’ll figure it out attitude” and that attitude has served me in many areas of my life, but it stifled me when I began creating my online dance business.

Millions of tabs open turned into many hours down rabbit holes, which turned into copious notes, and ultimately... what the f*** am I doing?!

The problem I found with my ego driven, fear based “I’ll Google it” mentality is that I was getting a lot of different perspectives on how to do the “thing.”

And what I needed, what I really wanted was clear direction and guidance; someone to talk to me and explain things.

I wanted a safe space of patience and kindness. I wanted to be taught and coached through the next steps I should take and why.

I basically was trying to make Google my mentor.

In episode #143 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I dive deeper into this.

I realized what I was not willing to spend in money to hire a mentor I was spending in time, peace of mind, and confidence.

When I started to put my faith in people instead of Google, my business and vision for life began unfolding right before my eyes.

So tell me, are you putting your faith in google or people? And how’s it working for you? Hit me up on IG @erinpride and lmk.

STUDENT: 💭 I’m just gonna slide by and kinda work in my dance classes, but I’m going to kill the performance.

TEACHER: 💭🤔

STUDENT: (After Performance) 🥴

TEACHER: 😑

If you come from a dance background you know exactly what the above emoji conversation is about.

Many times we have students that don’t value training and they don’t understand that you must train before a performance in order to get the most out of the performance for yourself and others.

Well the same goes for the product you are currently thinking about launching and selling for your online dance business.

The biggest mistake I see online business owners make is… having an idea, creating a way for the idea to be paid for, showing up online and talking about the idea minimally, and being disappointed when people don’t buy.

And like the emoji conversation above this is because you my friend are not training for the performance and your performance is the launch/sale.

In episode #142 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I dive into my 4-part framework of necessary ingredients to create a successful dance product so that you can make money online.

I talk:

  1. Transparency
  2. Training
  3. Creating
  4. and then performance

So tell me have you been training for your launch/sale or have you been jumping right to the performance? And how have the results been (no judgment, just over here showing you a better way)? Hit me up on IG @erinpride and lmk.

Do you worry that people won’t take you seriously because of your age, energy, sex, etc.?

Or, you’re a BIPOC and you worry that other races won’t want to invest in your intellectual property?

Or, maybe you have a full time job, children, and a partner, and worry that you will fail them?

The bottom line is, these are all examples of fear... fear of the unknown. Fear of the future. Don’t let that fear dictate the progress you're making in your online business now.

You see, I got a crazy eye infection recently, and with that I can’t really see, or drive, or do computer work. So I am on a healing journey. And I am trusting my amazing team to get things done.

I said all of this because I want you to know that sometimes your business will feel hard, but what if you got the support you needed? What if you stopped worrying about all these things and focused that energy on what you can do to build the business and life of your dreams now?

In episode #141 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I dive into why your online dance business may be feeling hard. I encourage you to let go of perfection and wanting to be the business for everyone, have faith over fear, and hire the support you need.

So tell me, what perspective shifts do you need to make your online dance business feel easier? Hit me up on IG @erinpride and lmk.

My clients don’t always like what I have to say.

But I want them and you to build the dance business and life of your dreams. So I lead with love and honesty.

And my job as a coach is to help you get uncomfortable, because that’s where the growth happens.

It’s my job to support you on your journey to a transformation.

So today I want to challenge and inspire you with a perspective shift.

You may not like it but here it is:

Making money online and sharing your message is more than just creating a package and posting about it.

There. I said it!

There are so many working parts that go into creating a successful package, and in episode #140 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I dive into a social media marketing tip about how to format your packaging based on the framework you use to get your ideal client from a-z.

It’s time to get uncomfortable. Are you ready?

Uncomfortable is where my biggest growth happens.

It’s the icky, “f**k this is hard⁣,” messy, change provoking work.

You see, I used to be a people pleaser. I would fill up my calendar doing things I didn’t want to do, because I felt bad saying no.

I had to get uncomfortable.

Starting to turn down things that didn’t align with my life and my goals was hard. But it’s like exercising a muscle. It got easier and easier the more I did it.

I learned that, it’s in our ability and acceptance of things being messy and uncomfortable, that we find freedom.

In episode #139 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I have a great conversation with Jennifer Aks-Neuman, founder of dance herStory, a collection of video diaries that help Womxn move life stories through their bodies with gestures instead of writing.

We dive into:

  • My experience going through the video diary process
  • Having the willingness to be messy and uncomfortable
  • And using movement and creativity to help us through emotions

Let’s talk; doing the work.

When I first started my online dance business, I thought the work was about strategy and building technique.

It wasn’t until after I invested in a coach that I learned that the work is releasing, and accepting what you don’t know.

The work is accepting that what you have been doing is not working, and deciding to do it a different way.

It is what moves you to a higher version of yourself.

It’s uncomfortable.

It’s the ish you don’t want to do.

But when you genuinely put in the GOOD work, you’re going to achieve your goals. And, your goals may look a little different than what you expected.

You are in charge of the effort, not the outcome.

In episode #138 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I sat down with Khadifa Wong, award-winning director, to discuss Uprooted, her feature-length film directorial debut.

We dive into:

  • Putting in the work
  • The idea of consistent growth
  • Passion vs. settling
  • And surrounding yourself with people you aspire to be

Khadifa also gives us some great small business tips for those of you looking up your game.

So tell me, what stage of “the work” are you in, in your online dance business?

Do you identify as a dance teacher and a dance coach?

A teacher instructs you in a specific skill-set, breaking down material for you to understand.

A coach helps you develop and improve your own skills to get you through a process.

Like me, you may possess both qualities of a teacher and a coach, but it is so important, as an online dance business owner, to differentiate between the two, and how you help your clients reach their transformation.

Oftentimes people falsely market what they do, and as a result, their clients are left dissatisfied with services, and you are frustrated that your clients are not reaching the transformation you desire.

It’s all okay and this is a common mistake made in the early stages of starting an online business. Once you hone in on the way you deliver your gift, imposter syndrome starts to fade away and you start to really call in the people that would benefit the most from your services and your style.

In episode #137 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I have an amazing conversation with Gena Dubose, aerial dance coach for both instructors and movers. We dive into her passion for coaching, the importance of niching down, the value of building a framework for your business, and why she calls herself a coach instead of a teacher.

So tell me, are you a teacher or a coach? And why?

I used to think goal setting was the key, but I now know the magic sauce is productivity.

Many times my clients come to me with these huge goals and ideas for their business, but they are not in alignment with their lives.

They are based in fear and what they see other people doing.

But it’s not about other people.

You have to do what’s best for you!

It’s your life. You have to set those boundaries and decide what’s important in your business.

And as you establish those non-negotiables, you will grow and evolve.

In episode #136 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I get to dive into this more with my friend, studio owner, visibility business coach, podcast host, and Dance Boss OG, Melissa Rose!

You see, Melissa was featured way back in season 3.

So today is extra special because we get to chat about all the things that have changed for her, and how she navigates life and business without getting stuck in the overwhelm trap.

We dive into being a mom and business owner, building a team, trusting the process, and doing the work.

⁣I was in the early stages of my business when my business coach said “overwhelm is a choice...”

I did an internal eye roll and thought she was on some kind of woo sh**

I get it now!

Many of my clients come to me telling me they’re overwhelmed.

It’s mostly because they are creative and they have a lot of ideas swimming around in their head. (Can you relate?)

But sometimes it is because they are giving importance to false urgency.

Now, I’m not here to tell you what is urgent and/or important to you. That is subjective.

I’m here to help you reflect on the decisions you're making and how they're impacting your life and your business, and how you may be hiding from the business you're trying to build.

In episode #135 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I dive into this concept and a key way to differentiate between what’s important and what’s urgent.

I thought I would live to see 40, but I wasn’t always sure I would enjoy the way I was living.

Talking about my dark days is something I often camouflage, but today I decided to go a little deeper as nowadays I like to push myself to get uncomfortable.

I grew up never really feeling like I fit in. I grew up in the “hood”, people would say I talked and dressed like a “white girl”... I got made fun of and I got into unwanted fights.

I quickly learned how to adapt, I became a chameleon so that I would be liked and accepted.

At first I didn’t think this had an impact on who I was. I thought this was normal. I thought this was the way you were supposed to walk through life.

So I kept hiding and kept achieving.

This turned out to affect everything from my sense of self worth to relationships that I continuously failed to build.

On the outside looking in I was fine, little glimpses of the chaos of my life came to light, but I quickly hid that with my bubbly personality, and my ability to read people.

I became a master of giving people what they wanted.

When I was 35 I had one of the hardest moments in my life, this moment propelled me on a journey of hard work, commitment, and honesty (not fully ready to share all of this yet)...

This moment gave me a chance to start living my life, a chance to set boundaries.

This moment gave me an understanding of how to fully love all parts of myself.

When I turned 40, I did it without fear of being liked, without lies of who I should be.

I love the life I live, even though I have faced challenges.

I love the woman I have become and am still becoming.

In episode #134 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I have an amazing conversation with Cassandra Ream, dancer, choreographer, educator, owner and artistic director of Art In Motion Design, an event design and coordination and performance art company, and soon to be author.

We dive into Cassandra’s journey of learning to love everything that made her different, how dance fit into it, and how her business came from it.

Her story reminds me so much of my own.

So here’s to all my outcasts who finally owned their power and show up as they truly are!

If that’s you, then celebrate with me and tag me or DM me on Instagram to tell me about your journey.

Are you an online dance business owner suffering from ATS syndrome?

AFRAID

TO

SELL

I find this syndrome very apparent in our dance culture.

We did gigs for free & we were grateful for them.

We taught for less than we should’ve out of love for our students.

We bought our own costumes, & paid for travel knowing we couldn’t afford it.

When many of us start our online dance businesses these past financial practices can be a hindrance.

We almost need to reprogram ourselves to understand that we can charge, asking for what we want can be the norm, & low balling our offers doesn’t have to be our narrative.

When I started to embody the fact that what I offer is of value, and witnessed my services change lives I was able to speak about it more frequently and without underlying shame.

So I’m gonna go first and then at the end of this post I’m going to charge you to take action on something so stay with me…

In episode #133 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I dive into ATS and how you can push through it. I also talk about my 1-on-1 coaching for the online dance business owner who is ready to step into action, and get support in an intimate high touch setting.

OK see I just sold and blatantly shared how my offer could help you, without shame.

Here’s what I want you to do:

Create a post or go on your stories and talk about how people can buy your amazing online dance products/services. Tag me so that I can be your biggest cheerleader!

Are you living your life full out?

I have wanted to move for some time, but fear was stopping me.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

You see, I hate sucking…⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I know dance, and I know when you don’t train you to have to accept that you will not be as good as you want to be when you step back on the floor (or in this case on the zoom)… ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

  • I am too old⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
  • I am not thin enough ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
  • I won’t remember the combination ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

All of these thoughts were running miles through my mind as I logged into that Broadway Dance Center Zoom Class. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

And guess what? I was one of the older ones in the class. I did not feel amazing in my body, and I left class early because I couldn’t get the combination…⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

And then I remembered this:

The sum of feeling successful is the small actions taken daily.⠀

If I do not train consistently I will not be in the mental or physical shape to take dance classes at the capacity I desire! ⠀

You see, I’ve been having this conversation with listeners in my DM’s a lot lately!

The conversation about not wanting to or not being able to dance anymore.

About not being comfortable in your body, and feeling like you’re losing a part of yourself.

And, you’re not alone.

Let this serve as your reminder to accept where you are and do what you have to do to get where you want to be.

-Commit to the journey of sucking in the beginning ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

-Build a solid foundation ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

-Continuously train

In episode #132 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I sit down with Taylor Behringer, life-long dancer, mom, dance educator, & healer in the dance space. We talk about transitioning and owning your presence and your body, no matter where you are in your life. We also dive into what it actually means to create a safe space for dancers, and some action steps you can take to do just that.

Don’t let fear dictate your future.

Those who succeed are just bold enough to try and figure it out!

They are bold enough to learn and explore.

Stop complaining and start choosing!

When I sit on my soap box complaining (which I do, we all do! It’s called being human), my good friend tells me…

“You will change when you are sick and tired of being sick and tired!”

Ugh!

So I made a choice, to stop complaining, and I reached out to my team to start brainstorming.

That’s why I value people who help me see my blind spots.

I also value education and perspective shifts.

So shout out to The Dance Magazine and The Dance Edit Podcast!

Your girl was featured on their IG and I am so honored!

If you don’t know them, get to know them! They doing some amazing work creating space for conversation about our current climate and providing education for our beloved dance industry.

In episode #127 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I share an interview with the Dance Edit Podcast where I talk about my dance story and the many pivots I’ve made getting to 40. I also share the deets behind my latest pivot and why I teach dancers how to utilize their gifts and bring in extra income for them and their families.

When you have integrity you can do anything!

I started this journey in fear, but now I am getting ready for the 3rd round of DancePreneur Academy!

That’s my 4-month group coaching program, where I teach you how to grow your online dance business.

See... integrity overpowered my fear. I knew that if I was going to do a group program I was going to make sure it created results, empowered, and focused on educating on a deep level.

Business is hard sometimes, and that is just a reality, but it’s a whole lot harder when you’re not educated.

Get educated, and experience a freedom in your business that you didn’t think was possible.

In episode #126 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I sit down with my favorite podcast producer, founder of Pink Lady Productions, and Dance Boss OG, Jasmine Gary. We get real about the hesitations she had before joining DancePreneur Academy, and the wins she’s had since graduation.

And, to hear more about Jasmine’s story, listen to episode #50 of the Dance Boss Podcast.

Now, tell me about a time you overcame fear!

And, the dedication to excellence in how you show up for yourself and your clients!

How much does your follower count matter to you?

Not much? Too much?

When I first started my online dance business, I didn’t care much about the amount of followers I had.

The genuine connection with my followers was more important. And, it still is very important.

But, if you are just starting out monetizing your dance knowledge in the online space, and don’t have your ideal clients following you, who is going to buy your products and services?

Yes, social media can be intimidating...

But there are so many people out there who need your products and services.

You just have to reach them.

There’s nothing wrong with you! You are not broken! You can absolutely grow your online dance business to a lucrative business that gives you more freedom in your life!

The problem isn’t you my friend… what I often find with my clients and myself is that the problem is the unwillingness to get uncomfortable.

What I mean by this is the unwillingness to learn new things and to unlearn old things.

Generating clients and leads from your social media content is doable, but you have to dedicate yourself to understanding how to do it.

You have to dedicate yourself to the art of being a content creator, creating content that speaks to your ideal client, and solves a problem for them.

Millions of people have done this and there’s no reason you can’t.

In episode #123 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I dive into a free workshop I did - How Create Dance Content That = Cash! In this episode I go over some key things that you can start to TAKE ACTION on NOW so that you can build the online dance business that you envisioned.

So tell me, are you willing to get uncomfortable?

Myth: You have to show up with high energy for people to be attracted to you and buy from you!

Truth: Nope, nada, nah... you have to show up as you. People are drawn to different things. If your energy is naturally high and bubbly, lean into that. If it is calm, cool, and collected, lean into that. It’s not your vibe that turns people off, it’s your lack. It’s your content creation game.

On episode # 121 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I dive into this myth and others that both my clients and I have faced.

Okay now tell me... which myth is cock blocking you from excellence?

I’m in my college dance comp class and the teacher says “please do not add the kitchen sink to your compositional studies.”

We all giggled and had no clue what she really meant.

We were ripe newbies to composition, so as far as we knew, people didn’t dance with the kitchen sink...

The teacher went on to say:

“I don’t want to see things that you do in your technique class in your studies. You have training. I want to see you explore your creativity, and in this class you are going to get the tools to help you tap into that creativity.”

This is paraphrased, of course. I went to college over 20 years ago... Hello 40!

So our compositional journey began and it took many forms. Some were naturals at finding their choreographic voice, but for many of us it was a series of awkward errors.

Stage 1 - Use the kitchen sink in studies cause we were uncomfortable and scared to be daring.

Stage 2 - Over-do daring by trying too hard to be different!

Stage 3 - Miss a few assignments cause we were over it...

Stage 4 - Start applying the choreographic tools we were learning in class to find our creativity.

These stages are very similar to the ones many of us face when building an online dance business:

Stage 1 - No clue what you are doing so you just copy what you see.

Stage 2 - Try really hard to stand out and be different and this often equals not feeling good enough and feeling like throwing in the towel.

Stage 3 - Doing nothing, over it

Stage 4 - Becoming dedicated to learning and mastering the technique of building an online dance business. Investing in your education, learning from someone who inspires you. Taking the technique learned and using it to express your business creatively through your voice. And of a all sudden sh** is happening, momentum is building!

On episode #120 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I dive into these stages further.

I don’t know about you, but I’m a stage 4 kind of gal, and I teach my clients how to operate in stage 4 as well.

What stage are you in, my friend?

Imagine if the world was full of look-a-like dance pieces.

Same movement.

Same intent.

Same everything.

That would be punishment to our dance souls!

Fortunately, that isn’t the world we live in.

When choreographing, we pull from the choreographic toolbox to express our own voices.

And, it’s the same with your dance brand.

The point is to be yourself.

Don’t blend in!

By being yourself, you will bring in people who feel connected to you, and find what works best for you.

On episode #119 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I share the foundation of building your dance brand on social media.

Once you’ve tried these steps let me know. How did they work for you?

There are two types of people.

Those who get into their feelings and get into action.

And, those who get into their feelings and let those feelings paralyze their action.

Adapting was the word for 2020. All across the dance industry you saw educators, studio, competition & convention directors, performers, and students adapt.

On episode #118 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Justine Menter whose mission is to help our dance students adapt and audition successfully virtually. Justine is the owner and founder of Mntr Mgmt, an online mentoring, career management, and business training program for artists.

We dive into strategies that you can take into your classroom and into your career. We also dive into her pivot, launching her online dance business, and the direction of the commercial dance industry since COVID.

This pandemic definitely shined a light on a lot of shadowy places...

It affected every part of the dance world.

From competition to education, to journalism, and even further! Which really showed everyone’s true values...

On episode #116 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I sit down with Margaret Fuhrer, editor in chief of Dance Edit newsletter and producer of The Dance Edit Podcast. We peel back the layers of dance media and have a great conversation about the changing face of the dance community, and how it is moving toward diversity and inclusion.

We also talk about:

  • How to find your voice.
  • How to shift your content.
  • And how to submit your work, effectively.

“A piece of journalism can be a powerful work of advocacy!” -Margaret Fuhrer

I had to show up and do the right work!

Not only monetarily, but the women that I get to work with each day helping grow the businesses that lean on their hearts, is a gift and a dream come true. ⁣

When you meet someone do you dive right in and seal the deal?

(Get your mind out of the gutter🤪)

No!

You meet someone, you’re attracted to them, and if all goes well the attraction is mutual and you go on a date!

If the date goes well, you go on some more dates...

And before you know it you’re in a full-blown relationship!

Well, this is basically the same process when connecting with your potential customer/client.

Attracting your ideal client to seal the deal does not take magic. It takes a clear attraction strategy and on episode #112 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I dive into how to create an attraction strategy that works for you.

“I don’t have time...”

This is a crock of BS!

I say this with love.

I also say this with a plan to help you look at your time in a different way, so you can reach the goals you desire in your online dance business.

In episode #111 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I share an IG Live with my 3-part framework that I use with my clients to help them plan from a place of intentionality.

Eliminating self judgment and overwhelm.

It works if you work it... here is what my client said after taking her through this process:

“This call really helped me put my goals into perspective and give myself steps to achieve them. Which is helping motivate me to do the work in areas I’m slacking.”

You will never find time for anything. If you want time, you must make it.” Charles Britton

So what aren’t you making time for? Hit me up and let me know. I’d love to hear from you!

How do I? This is an interesting question because how you do anything depends on you, your season of life, and the beautiful goals connected to your soul.

Figuring out my ‘how’ when starting my online business was hard.

I spent a lot of time, basing my how on others...

  • I wrote content the way others suggested.
  • I launched the way others suggested.
  • I created offers the way others suggested.
  • I basically ran my business the way others suggested.

And the weird thing is, it’s not always a suggestion, sometimes coaches in this online space basically bully you into thinking if you don’t do it their way you won’t be successful...

And I believed them.

I was left with a business that didn’t feel fun and a mind that didn’t feel good enough.

It wasn’t until I shifted the focus from “How Do I?” to “What Kind of Business Do I Want to Build?” Then I really started to enjoy my business, felt empowered in my business, and started seeing growth in my business.

In episode #109 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I share a mashup of some amazing tips to grow your online dance business. To help you start to think deeply about what kind of leader and business owner you want to be!

Start weeding out what doesn’t feel good, and start committing to what does.

Diversity in dance is very important!

It fights boundaries and debunks myths.

Like the myth that ballet is made for one type of person.

Dance should be available for everyone who wants to do it, not just those who fit into certain molds.

On episode #107 of the Dance Boss Podcast, my guest Olia Tsopela and I dive into this concept, her business, The Dancer Next Door, and her journey getting there.

Olia highlights market research (which I love!), and proclaims that it led her to find out what her clients really wanted.

Now she is breaking ballet stereotypes and addressing her student’s minds before their bodies.

She also reminds us that the joy is in the moment, not the end result.

So tell me, what journey are you on right now? Are you enjoying it?

Being a brown ballerina can be hard.

Especially in the commercial dance culture where many dancers are vicious...

And, in many spaces, you’re the only one.

But it can also be rewarding.

You can learn so much from the experience.

Like what you gravitate towards and what repulses you.

For Gaylyn Lareese, it’s been both.

On episode #105 of the Dance Boss Podcast, my guest, Gaylyn, and I dive into pivoting to find your voice and make a living from your art.

She also reminds us to “mind your business and make stuff.”

I was running an expensive hobby.

Spending a lot of time on my business but not seeing the financial return.

I don’t know why we, as artists, feel so guilty for charging.

But, I had to get over that!

On episode #98 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I take it back and dive into why my business wasn’t growing. One main reason was because I wasn’t being true to my learning style. I was trying on one-size-fits-all strategies instead of finding a strategy to fit me and my business.

Plus, I would charge the bare minimum, when I deserved so much more!

Once I got a coach, that became clear.

I owned my pricing, and I believed that people would pay for what I have to offer!

This is the third episode in a 4-part series that will help you monetize your dance teaching knowledge, and expertise online.

So stay tuned!

And, if you haven’t already listened to episodes #96 and #97 (parts 1 and 2) of the Dance Boss Podcast, what are you waiting for?

I want to make sure my students understand the beauty and possibility of diversity.

So I’m having uncomfortable conversations in brave spaces.

My talk with Jinah Parker… was amazing!

It was filled with good energy, openness, and commitment. And I am going to recap it for you.

On episode #91 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I dive into the main points from this workshop that stuck with me:

  1. Even if you own/teach at/dance at an all-White studio, it is still your responsibility to make it more racially diverse.
  2. Dance history is gold! Know it and incorporate it into your teaching.
  3. Microaggressions exist. We have to do our best to cut them out.

I truly believe that having these open and honest conversations will drive the change we need.

This is how I’m doing my part.

I don’t know if ya’ll are ready for this… but here we go!

Are you a dancer who feels like you have to embrace Eurocentric styles of dance to be considered “serious?”

Or, maybe you’re a studio owner who doesn’t have much diversity in your curriculum?

Why does the dance world value certain styles of dance over others?

The answers to these questions can be as complex as the questions themselves, but if we want change, we have to dig deeper and continue the conversation.

On episode #90 of the Dance Boss Podcast, my guest Kim Elliott dives all the way in! We talk about how to bring more racial consciousness into your dance classroom, how to shift the value from certain dance techniques to others, and the importance of demonstrating what diversity really is.

We also talk about:

Alignment…

Calling…

Purpose…

And leaning in!

Anyone else feeling the silent weight of social media lately?

I am!

This is not business as usual and social media is making me feel all of the emotions… Frustrated. Overwhelmed. Angry!

Today, I spoke to a friend about taking a social media break and she reminded me that if I want people to come to our free discussion on Tuesday June 23rd I have to show up and show up in a big way!

And then she went on to say “It’s totally okay if you don’t want to show up. We can wait to have the discussion when you return.”

Well I silently cursed her out!

And then I silently cursed myself out...

Because she was right!

If I want to have this virtual conversation to help dance educators use their voice to create racial consciousness in their dance classroom/studio, I have to show up.

The time is now.

I want to help facilitate positive change in the dance community.

So I decided to show the F up!

And it ain’t easy right now.

I am sharing this, so you know it’s hard for me too. There is no right answer to what you should or should not be doing. It’s different for each of us and that is ok. That is enough…

With all of that said I want to invite you to our discussion Am I Doing Enough - How to use Your Voice in Your Dance Classroom or Studio to Create Racial Consciousness on Tuesday June 23rd at 4pm EST. To save your spot - https://bit.ly/amidoingenough

Change is scary as f**k until it isn’t

Especially when the change is big, sudden, and unjust.

But, I am an avid believer in divine intervention.

“From our deepest tragedies, come our greatest blessings!”

The world is not an easy place right now.

So it’s especially important for us to continue facilitating the conversation and building our community.

On episode #88 of the Dance Boss Podcast, my guest Tricia Gomez dives into her journey from Hip Hop in a Box to Rhythm Works Integrative Dance - teaching dance educators how to work more effectively with students that have learning differences and special needs.

.
.
In this episode we also dive into…

👇🏾

When you feel that push, that thing tugging on your heart strings, you have to follow where it leads.

👇🏾

When you are on the right path, surrounded by the right people, and doing the work, doors will open for you.

In response to Dance Teacher Network being archived, I want to address a BIG issue I see in the dance world…⁣

So much of our industry and classes are still seeing “dance” as simply a physical form of movement, and taking away the full embodiment of educating the human.⁣

For those who have large platforms like DTN, making decisions on how you show up and address global climate changes in order to support your community is vital.⁣

Unfortunately in their response to our current pressing issues, they failed to do so…⁣

This is an opportunity to have those uncomfortable conversations…⁣

Racism exists and racism exists in the dance world!⁣

It isn’t about dance. It’s about using your voice to educate your students, using your platform to help people have conversations to evoke change!⁣

This went from IG stories to IGTV and a deeper discussion now available on episode #87 of the Dance Boss podcast to listen….

Please share this or create your own video, post, podcast to raise awareness in order to educate the human. 🙏🏾

HOLD ON FOR THE MIRACLE!

I wanted to give up…

I was making $500 consistently a month in my business.

I was working full time and growing a business, so I had to outsource. There were not enough hours in the day for me to do it all, so I hired help. With that help came paying out of pocket.

That’s right! $500 in income didn’t come close to the amount of money it was costing me to run my business. I was using my personal money and cutting things very close.

There came a point when I was about to throw in the towel. I felt guilty… I wanted to pay off debt, save, and build a life with Paul. How dare I come out of pocket to support my business?

Do I walk away? Do I keep going? Am I selfish? Is my money going to the wrong places? These are the questions I repeatedly asked myself.

And then I did something that probably made no sense financially.

I hired a coach!

You see, I followed people on IG, and listened to podcasts where people kept saying “I grew when I hired a coach…”

I would think to myself, “Well that must be nice, you have the money for that!”

As I listened to these stories deeper, I realized the running theme:

Most, if not all of these people invested before they were actually ready, and they knew that in order to get to the level they wanted, they had to seek help.

So, I decided to take the leap! I invested in a coach and I was shaking in my student loan debt! More money out of pocket. Less money toward debt, saving, and building a future…

And I kid you not, 2 months after hiring my coach, I made 4 figures in my business. This month I made 4 figures in my business. That is 2 months of consistently making 4 figures in my business!

And I am beyond grateful!

I didn’t quit before the miracle happened, but I realized that in order to get different results I had to take different action… I knew what I was doing wasn’t going to get me to my goals. I had to change it.

Also, I truly believe when you invest in yourself and your business, people in-turn invest in you and your business. It’s the circular beauty of the universe.

Want to hear more about my $500 to 4 figures journey? Listen to episode #86 of the Dance Boss Podcast, where my business coach Alicia Jonas and I dive in.

WARNING! Things may not be as they appear.

September 2018 Launched Dance Boss Podcast.

May 2019 Launched Dance Boss University a monthly membership for dance educators.

September 2019 Did some coaching around dance curriculum creation.

October 2019 realized that I loved coaching woman 1 on 1... I loved the transformation, and connection of 1 on 1, but I didn’t enjoy coaching around curriculum (I didn’t tell anyone because I felt so far in and feared judgment).

December 2019 Loved showing up but didn’t love speaking about dance education anymore (I am cringing with fear as I write this).

January 2020 Dissatisfied with what I was doing, but I was too scared to change it.

February 2020 Started working with a coach 1 on 1.

March 2020 Changed my brand.

April 2020 Launched and sold out my 1 on 1 coaching program & 90-minute intensives.

April 2020 Decided to lean fully into helping dance educators build their dream, start an online business, and bring in additional revenue.

May 2020 Announced the closing of Dance Boss University (this was hard, scary, and emotional).

May 2020 Shifted the content of the podcast (again scary... what if people stop listening...what if my sponsor leaves... what if it sucks).

May 2020 Working with my clients, helping them bring their dreams to reality and fully loving every second.

You see my entire life I have always felt the drive, passion, calling to help people reach their goals, do the unthinkable, and live the life they want to truly live.

It wasn’t until I:

got honest about WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE DOING…

dove fully into what I felt so strongly in my heart called to do…

let go of all the things even though I feared judgment…

that I began to not only make the impact I wanted to make and find the light inside of me that I was searching for, but also make money doing what I love. And making money for sharing your gifts is a beautiful thing!

If your holding onto something and scared to let it go...

If you are trying to hide it from yourself or those around you…

Take it from me.

Let it go.

Something amazing is waiting on the other side.

On episode #84, the final episode of season 7 of the Dance Boss Podcast, I pull back the curtain (even further lol) on my business journey and talk about how I stepped into something new.

You go into a new salon to get your hair done.

You don’t tell the beautician what you want, because you in fact don’t know what you want...

You think somehow your wish of feeling good when you get spun around in that chair will jump off your body and into your hairstylist brain… It doesn’t.

They spin you around to look in the mirror and… you hate it!

You are disappointed.

They are disappointed.

It’s just a hot mess express...

Tell me this… Has a teacher, boss, coach, etc. ever told you to do something new without teaching you how to do it?

With no explanation.

No clear expectations outlined.

If you answered yes, then you know how frustrating, overwhelming, and out-right chaotic this can be.

On episode #83 of the Dance Boss Podcast, my guest Kristen Hale dives into the five most overlooked coaching strategies to up your student, staff, and team performance.

Kristen, along with her husband and business partner Sam, help athletes in sports and the arts “achieve excellence by training their most powerful tool – their mind,” with Launch Peak Performance, a one-on-one mental coaching program.

She dropped so many knowledge bombs and I know you will benefit from this conversation.

Social media; friend or frenemy?

Being tuned in virtually has become our new norm.

And social media...

Fake friend?

Or bestie?

Social media can be a tool used for connecting people around the globe, learning a new skill, and building an influence.

It can also increase isolation, negativity, and comparison.

But, on the flip side, it is becoming normal to go to social media for just about everything. And, in the dance world specifically, it is opening new doors for people who haven’t been traditionally successful in the dance industry.

WOC, plus sized, disabled, gender non-conforming (etc.) dancers are now taking the stage, and owning it!

In this episode, I sat down with Makeda Easter of the LA Times and we dove into her article, “The Rise of the Dancefluencer.” Whether you love social media or hate it the truth is, dancers and dance teachers are using it to leverage their careers.

Oh no friend you're fine… You just need to reframe your what if! ⁣

We all feel resistance in our lives. Resistance to working out, or doing housework, or chasing a dream, whatever. I feel it most, when I’m supposed to be shifting. ⁣

The little monsters in my head say, “no, don’t do it,” “sleep longer,” “you’re not good enough,” “no one needs this!” ⁣

Recently I was resisting a shift. ⁣

I was leaning into fear asking myself questions like…⁣

What if this doesn’t work?⁣

What if it’s the wrong idea?⁣

What if people judge me?⁣

What if I‘m not good enough?⁣

But then I reframed my what if’s... ⁣

What if I help a lot of people?⁣

What if I make an impact?⁣

What if this is the next step of my journey that propels me closer to who I am meant to be? ⁣

What if I succeed?⁣

In this episode, I talk about my shift, my resistance, and how this one idea ended up being in total alignment with my purpose. ⁣

It’s totally ok to want to make an impact.⁣
It’s totally ok to want to be know for something.⁣
It’s totally ok to want to be a leader in your industry. ⁣

Feels weird to admit these things right? Don’t worry. I use to feel the same way. I use to feel guilty and embarrassed that I wanted all of those things. Then, I realized I was stuck in the “I don’t deserve to make money for my gifts,” “I am a bad person if I want to be a leader in my space,” mindset.⁣

Sure I do, and sure you do too! ⁣

If you want to make impact in your space, do it and be proud of it!⁣
If you want to be paid to make an impact in your space, do it and be proud of it!⁣
If you want to partner with brands, speak on stages all around the world, be featured in magazines for making an impact in your space, do it and be proud of it! ⁣

We all deserve to make money sharing our gifts, and we all deserve to share our message. As long as the services you provide are of value to your people. As long as you are leading with integrity. And, as long as you can lay your head down on your pillow at night, proud of how you showed up. ⁣

Wish for the moon and get the stars baby! ⁣

I want a lot of things and I will not apologize for it, and you shouldn’t either! ⁣

In today's episode, my guest Diane Foy, dives into making an impact and reaching the masses.⁣

Diane helps artists "cultivate authentic connections with audiences and industry gatekeepers so that they can build a thriving career in the arts, without feeling overwhelmed or doubting themselves." In her 15 plus years in the industry, she has worked with the likes of Jane’s Addiction’s Perry Farrell, punk pioneers D.O.A., actor, singer, and author Mackenzie Phillips, and Pretty Little Liars actor Tyler Blackburn.
