President Kennedy presented an Irish Brigade flag from the American Civil War to the Irish people in 1963.
The flag was the second green colour of the fighting 69th of New York, whose motto was “The Union, Our Country and Ireland Forever”. There has been ongoing controversy over the proposals the government is bringing forward about how to address the claims brought by the Woman of Honour, former members of the Defence Forces who claim to have been the victim of sexual aggression and, in may cases, sexual assault while they were on duty. The government has not ruled out a statutory commission of inquiry to get to the bottom of what exactly happened to those women. It has in the interim proposed a non-statutory investigation to have a scoping inquiry. This week, Sinn Féin will use their Dáil time to press officially for a commission of investigation into the whole affair. Gavan was joined by Historian and host of the Three Castles Burning Podcast Donal Fallon to discuss the Monaghan Asylum Opera this week. In recent weeks, an Opera has taken to the stage of the Abbey Theatre, telling the unlikely story of an Asylum in Monaghan which was taken over by its staff - who proclaimed a Soviet. The hospital still exists in Monaghan today - but the event, mostly forgotten until brought back to the stage, was international news in its day. They are exciting times in the Abbey Theatre - with some new faces, like Executive Director Mark O’Brien, brought in from the thriving Axis Theatre in Ballymun. The reopening of our theatres in recent times - like the return of live music - brought a degree of normality into our lives, of course time will tell how much of that remains, but a return of bums to seats in the National Theatre lifted spirits. And amidst the programming of recent weeks was Elsewhere, which told the story of the so-called ‘Monaghan Soviet’ - predating the more famous takeover of Limerick City, what occurred in Monaghan in late January 1919 was the first significant such event in Ireland - and, as we will hear today, it was news internationally, with plenty of exaggerated headlines on the other side of the Atlantic. Against the backdrop of world events, words can enter popular usage. Depressingly,Merriam-Webster gave the 2020 word of the year to 'Pandemic', as did dictionary.com. But, in the world of late 1917, 1918 and onwards, one of the words that had entered mainstream consciousness - and which was bandied about on all sides - was Soviet. As a noun, it means “an elected local, district, or national council in the former Soviet Union.” Some in the press spoke with fear of the idea of ‘Soviets’ emerging amongst disgruntled workers, but others used the word positively - from the Labour Party to the unions. Kathleen Funchion, Sinn Fein’s Children’s Spokesperson joined Gavan on On The Record this afternoon. Funchion said that she has serious concerns about the redress scheme announced on Tuesday and said that it will exclude a large number of people. The concerns stem from the Mother and Baby home reports not covering all Mother and Baby homes and county homes. Anyone not included in these homes in the reports are therefore not eligible for the government redress scheme. Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue joined On The Record this morning. A few dozen tractors will be driven through Dublin city centre this afternoon in convoy which is expected to have an impact on traffic. It is a demonstration organised by the Irish Farmer's Association in protest at the Government's stance on the climate action plan and forthcoming changes to the EU's common agricultural policies (CAP). Catherine Motherway, intensive care specialist at University Hospital Limerick joined Gavan this morning on On The Record. At the moment in UL there is a total of 13 Covid patients accounting for 24 critical care beds. Motherway noted that transplant surgery has been profoundly impacted both nationally and internationally by the pandemic.
