Each new episode will feature specific film related topics, such as cameras, film selection, home processing, and photography techniques, and the brothers will attempt to answer your questions, too. The Shutter Brothers are waxing nostalgic about the old days of local camera and photography shops - and that's easy for them to do, because Kevin spent many happy hours hanging out in them, and Wayne actually work in and owned one. All we can say is "you should have been there," because it was a magical as you would expect - if you are as crazy about cameras as we are.
The official start of summer is just days away, and both Wayne and Kevin are thinking about travel photography and (of course) travel film cameras. So, Wayne gives a run down of his recent acquistion the Fuji GS645 Professional Wide 60 medium format rangefinder camera and how it might be a good choice for travel photography. Meanwhile, Kevin is preparing for his first ever trip to California by choosing a camera to take along. You guessed it, it's his Leica M2. What is your go to travel film camera?

The Shutter Brothers (Wayne and Kevin) are back and ready to talk about photobooks. Kevin has recently become acquainted with the published work of the American photographer, Robert Adams, and in particular his book, Summer Nights, Walking. Having found several YouTube about Summer Nights, Walking, Kevin made the decision to find a copy and purchase it, and now he is able to view the photographs in the manner Robert Adams intended - in a finely published book. Does this matter? Listen to find out.
Next, the Shutter Bros. discuss the concept of revisiting past photographic efferts and the good things that might result. Whether it be revisiting a subject, a darkroom print, or even a piece of grear, sometimes the passage of time alone can be worth the effort and produces a 'remake' that becomes the keeper.
Kevin wants to give a big shout out to listener's Todd and Jason for generaouly sending him several darkroom prints over the past year or so. The Shutter Brothers are back fresh from an early morning photowalk to Richey Ridge Falls (near Soddy Daisy, Tennessee) and are ready to share their recent experiences photographing both together and also with a group of fellow film photography podcasters at Old Car City in White, Georgia. Along the way, Wayne and Kevin disuss ideas for the 4th Annual Photowalk with the Shutter Brothers. It all starts with getting out with your camera ends with having a photograph to share.
Ane speaking of sharing, Wayne is sharing some of his photography at the Annual Photography Exhibit & Competition at the Arts Center in Athens, Tennessee. The show is presented by the Athens Area Council for the Arts and runs from March 24 to May 30, 2025. If you live anywhere near East Tennessee, then make the trip to Athens to check out Wayne's work.
Now that Kevin has the Leica M2 he's wanted for so long, it didn't take long for him to think about adding a 35mm lens to his kit. Actually, he already has a Leica 35mm lens, but it is a screwmount Elmar f3.5. Can it be used with a Leica M camera? The answer is "yes," if you have a LTM to M mount adapter. Leica made them back in the day, and now they are made cheaply in China. But just how compatible are they. Find out in the show.
it's spring, and that means time for some de-cluttering. So, Kevin is giving away a camera! It's a fully functional Minolta Maxxum XTsi with a Minolta AF 35-70mm f4 zoom lens. Wel it finally happened. Kevin now owns a Leica M2 after an unexpected local ad pops up. Not an impluse buy, mind you, as his search for the right M2 and the right time to buy it has been years in the making. but to say that Kevin is excited is quite the understatement. Meanwhile, Wayne has been playing with a compact German designed camera of his own, the Rollei 35. And compact doesn't really describe just how small this full frame 35mm rangefinder camera is. Ergonomic it is not, but could Wayne like it anyway?

The Shutter Brothers are back with the first show of 2025, and its time to read some of the listener feedback that's in the UJC mailbag. Our listeners have lots of great questions and tips for us on topics like the best ways to meter with and without a light meter and the importance of shooting digital images in RAW format. And two of our listeners weigh in on why Kevin (who, as you no doubt know, has red green color blindness) can see colors more accurately when they appear on a screen as opposed to seeing them in person. We love the feedback we get from our listeners, and we will have more listener questions in our next show.
Meanwhile, both Wayne has been having unexpected troubles with hs film development process. As you know, Wayne develops his Ilford FP4+ 4x5 inch film sheets in a self-mixed modified Caffenol CL developer. This highly compensating process is cental to getting the negatives to which he is accustomed, namely detail in both shadows and highlights. This results in negatives that, because they contain all the important "information," are easier to print. However, Wayne's last two batches have had brown streaks and over developed highlights. Wayne wants to know why and what he can do about it.

And yes, they always have some "showing and telling" to do. Wayne begins with a discussion of his Canon Canonet QL17 G3, an excellent little compact 35mm rangfinder camera (often called "The Poor Man's Leica"). When this very capable camera is paired with the Canon Canolite D flash, it produces some of the best flash photography the Bros. have ever seen. Wayne explains how in the show.
Meanwhile, Kevin reveals what camera he bought after declaring his Wisner 4x5 would be the last camera he would ever buy? Would you believe it was a DSLR? Listen to the show to learn what and why.

The 3rd Annual Photowalk with the Shutter Brothers is just around the corner, and both Kevin and Wayne are getting ready for a fantastic day of photography and fun. It all happens on Saturday, October 26 at Fort Southwest Point in Kingston, Tennessee. Hundreds of late 18th centery military and civilian reenactors will converge for Kingston's Living History Reenactment Weekend to celebrate the city's 225th birthday, providing a unique photographic opportunity. The Shutter Brothers are in the studio - and so is Wayne's new camera! And what a camera it is! The Canon VI-L is as impressive a 35mm meter-less mechanical shutter rangefinder camera we've ever seen. Could it be better than a Leica? Listen and find out.
Meanwhile, Kevin is back from his amazing Alaskan cruise with six and a half rolls of exposed film. Listen for a report on how his two SLR cameras and three lenses performed on the 2000 mile journey.
Next, the Shutter Bros read some listener questions about focus loupes and stand development, the latter of which serves as a chance to discuss Wayne's updated Caffenol CL formula. Both Wayne and Kevin have used it with 4x5 sheet film with excellent results, but would it work with roll film?
Wayne's Leica-busting Canon VI-L isn't the only camera Wayne had been testing out lately. The Goerz Minicord is one of the most unique cameras we've ever seen. It's a subminiature twin lens reflex camera that uses double perforated 16mm film. Was it intended to be used as a spy camera? We've got opinions, as usual.

That dial is the way you access your camera's exposure compensation, and knowing how to use it will make you a better photographer. After a fun morning of photography, the Shutter Brothers are back to the podcast table - and Kevin has questions! Lately, he's been in the darkroom trying out fiber based paper for the first time, and he has much to learn about the differences between resin coated and fiber based paper when it comes to exposing, developing, fixing, washing, and drying processes. Fortunately, Wayne has been printing on FB paper for decades, so get ready to learn, everybody! The look and feel of FB paper makes mastering the learning curve worth it.
Kevin also reviews a fine photo book, New York Changing: Revisiting Berenice Abbott's New York by Douglas Levere. Berenice Abbott had a long and very successful photography career and is well known for her documentary photography of 1930's New York City. Levere attempts to rephotograph Abbott's subjects to demonstrate the changes time has brought about, and the book contains many side by side comparisons of both Abbott's and Levere's photography. Anyone who has interest in urban large format photgraphy will enjoy it very much!
Next, Wayne leads a discussion about Edward Weston's quote, "To photograph a rock, have it look like a rock, but be more than a rock." Exactly how does a developing phoographer begin to make images that express feelings or tell stories? Wayne has some practical and useful tips.

The Shutter Brothers have a take on camera shake, so ready steady go! Our listener email offers some advice on how to avoid camera shake and get sharp images with handheld camera. Also, the Bros. have some advice to a listener who is ready to develop fim for the first time. Next, Wayne and Kevin read some listener-submitted messages on postcard sized darkroom prints. And one of those prints came with a special gift for Kevin: a Minolta Maxxum XTsi camera body for Kevin to use on his Alaskan cruise in September. Our listeners are truly the best!

The two Shutter Brothers are talking twos! First, Kevin gets a breakdown from Wayne regarding the pros and cons of various camera pairs for his forthcoming Alaskan cruise in September. Why two? Because Kevin wants to shoot two films, color and b&w on this trip. But Kevin likes to travel light, so the gear has to be right (Hey, we Shutter Bros can rhyme too!)
Next, dueces run wild with twin lens reflex cameras. Two viewing lenses, two taking lenses, etc. Kevin has been using his Rolleicord Va a lot lately, but there a problem: camera shake! Kevin gets fuzzy shots when handholding the camera (but not when it's on a tripod). Could the design and location of the Rolleicord's shutter release be the culprit? To investigate, Wayne gathers his quartet of TLRs for comparison (and he has some cool ones!) and makes a suggestion for a solution.
Do you like slide shows? Want to double your fun? Wayne has something for you: a Stereo Vivid 3D slide projector with screen, extra bulbs, and a collection of 3D viewing glasses. It could be yours!

Most people find a lot of junk in their closet, but not Shutter Brother Wayne. He's been doing some spring cleaning lately, and what he found definitely is not junk. How about a Stereo Realist? And a stereo projector? Some stereo card mounts? A viewer? Imagine the cool slides shows at the Setser house
Wayne has been using handheld cameras a lot lately, especially his Noblex panoramic camera. Since the Noblex doesn't have a strap and must be held with both hands, Wayne could use a third hand to hold his handheld light meter. Or, he could find a meter that fits one his hand. And he did! The Reveni Labs Incident Meter straps on the the back of Wayne's hand stays there. Also, just a flip of a switch and a turn of the hand, and it becomes a reflective meter. Very handy!
Next, our faithful and clever listeners take over with some great questions, comments, and tips. And one of those questions leads us into a light meter deep dive. Reflective? Incident? Spot? No meter? We've got it covered.

Kevin is here, Wayne is back from Norway, and the Shutter Brothers are together again and ready to take a deep dive into everything about depth of field - what is it, how can it be controlled, and why it matters. Learning how to make depth of field work for you can take your photography to a higher level, and that's a good thing!
Wayne also shares his recent experiences in Norway and the approach to photography he took while there. He had many memerable experiences along the way, including a visit to a truly awesome analog photogrpahy shop in Bergen (where Wayne was able to replenish his film supply). He used all three of the cameras he brought wih him, and he shot mmost of his film. We can't wait to see the results!

Wayne and Kevin are back, and Wayne finally has the camera he's wanted for over 30 years: the Noblex 6/150F, a motorized panoramic medium format camera that takes sweeping panoramic photographs on 120 fiilm. Meanwhile Kevin is looking forward to his newest camera addition, the Intrepid 4x5 Mk. 5 large format camera. Also discussed in the show are a review of the (according to Kevin) perfect 35mm point and shoot, the Minolta AF2 and the importance of using distilled water when mixing developing chemistry. We're back with a show dedicated to the heath and wellbeing of your vintage cameras. Kevin's newly acquired Leica iiia has a shutter problem that can be put aright by a qualified camera technician. Camera servicing (Clean-Lubricate-Adjust, or CLA) will help your camera to function properly for years to come and is well worth the expense.
Although a camera should be serviced by an experienced technician, there may be a few things you can do yourself. In 2nd segment, Kevin talks about some repairs he has made successfully and one that was a fail.

A solo show from Shutter Brother Kevin! It's Autumn, and the fall colors are popping like crazy. Nature's impressionism is on full display and won't be back until a year from now, so now is the time to capture the fall colors on film. Kevin has been doing that lately, and he shares some useful tips for making keeper autumn shots.
Along the way, Kevin has begun to notice the effect Father Time is having on his eyesight, so now seems to be the right time to make the move to an autofocus SLR camera. Kevin has landed on the Minolta Maxxum 7000 as the perfect choice for him, so listen as he explains why.

Who doesn't love vacation photography, especially when you go "old school" like the Shutter Brothers, Kelley and Kevin Lane. Kelley talks about his success with Kodak's new Ektachrome E100 super 8 movie film, which was a lot of fun to do and even more fun to watch, especially when projected on a screen. Watching his movie is like going back in time - except that it happened just a month ago. The film and processing/scanning are a bit on the expensive side, but the experience is totally cool!
Meanwhile, Kevin talks about the fun he has been having shooting slide film on vacation and the even more fun he has been having developing, mounting, and projecting the slides. With a slide mounter, a supply of empty slides, and a working slide projector, you can make vacation slide shows come alive on the big screen.

Summertime, and the Shutter Brothers are taking it easy. At least Kevin was with some smooth vacation shooting - until a good camera went bad. Kevin discusses his misadventures with his Minolta X-700 and why every camera owner must think about equipment maintenance. Meanwhile Kelley talks about his plans to capture some of his vacation memories with his Argus/Cosina super 8 movie camera and newly-released Ektachrome movie film from Kodak. Movies on film are back! Finally, the Shutter Brothers discuss their latest camera acquisitions, including an Olympus OM-1 that Kelley found at his favorite local flea market, a Minolta 120 Riva Zoom point & shoot that Kevin paid $5 for at a local antique store, and another Nikon N60 that listener Jay Buie donated to be used by the Woodstation Elementary Camera Club. Summer has come to the sunny south, and the Shutter Brothers are celebrating the season by turning the hot dogs on the grill and making some film photography plans. Kelley talks about another flea market find, and this one is epic: a Nikon N90. This legendary camera was released just after the F4 (Nikon's first autofocus SLR) and included several improved features. Look for a complete review later this summer.
Meanwhile, Kevin returns to the subject of pushing and pulling film in response to a listener question. If you found yourself in a situation where you wished that you had higher (or lower) speed film, you can shoot the film that you have at a higher (or lower) ISO and compensate for the under (or over) exposure with a change in development time.
Finally, the Shutter Bro's answer some listener questions about toy and box cameras, photo walks, and favorite colors (blue . . . no, green!) The Shutter Brothers are here once again to give you a dose of film photography inspiration and education. Do you have filters in your camera bag that you don't know how to use? Was there a filter on the lens of that camera you just came home recently? Chances are that you have one of several filters that some folks simply leave on their lens all the time, but what do they do? Kevin does a deep dive into UV, UV Haze, and UV Skylight filters that, while they may project your lens from dirt and damage, they also have specific purposes that could help you make better photographs in certain conditions.
Next, Kelley introduces us to a great book on American Civil War photography, War Photographs Taken on the Battlefield of the Civil War by Matthew Brady and Alexander Gardner. Many of you will recognize the names of Brady and Gardner as well-known Civil War photographers, and this book puts much of their work in one very nice volume. Their photographs are, of course of of the wet plate variety, and the quality of the work is amazing, especially giving the conditions in which they were made. The book can be purchased online here.
Kelley continues with a camera, the Canon T70 SLR, which was Canon's entry into the automated yet fully manual 35mm camera market. The camera utilizes various program and automatic exposure modes, a built-in spot meter, a motor drive and has a large, bright viewfinder. Like many cameras of its era, it completely relies on battery power to work. Without batteries, the camera will not power up. Canon T70's are plentiful and relatively inexpensive, so if you come across one, consider giving it a try.

The Shutters Brothers are back (with new theme music!) with some "bright" ideas about how to improve your flash photography. Kelley explains the difference between manual, automatic, and dedicated flash units and how to get the most out of each. Also, we discuss special effects like bounce flash and night time flash portraits.
Meanwhile, Kevin has been wanting to use his camera indoors without flash. How is this possible? The answer is to "push" film. Kevin shot some Kodak ColorPlus 200 in the classrooms of the school where he teachers, but he exposed the film as if it was ISO 800 and extended the developing time to get good results without flash. You can do it, too!

Bur first, Kevin must solve some problems with his Zorki 1c: pinholes in the shutter curtain. Kevin also finds the perfect solution to his need for an inexpensive light box for negatives viewing, the Zecti A4 LED Light Box.
Meanwhile, Kelley reviews a really cool SLR, the Yashica FX-3 Super 2000, which, if found for a good price, would make an excellent student camera. And Kevin asks for and receives some advice on what cameras and film to use on his spring break trip to Savannah, Georgia.
