This is a podcast about God, faith, and real life. We share sermons from our weekly worship service. Occasionally, we share interviews and other conversations that help us explore what it means to follow Jesus. Kindred Church is an inclusive community that helps people take their next steps in response to God’s unconditional love. We’re particularly committed to the excluded, ignored, and questioning. Unfortunately, many Christian communities have a reputation for being rigid in ways that alienate anyone who doesn’t (or can’t) conform to expectations. But the church’s earliest leaders model a very different way. In today’s sermon, we’ll explore a New Testament story that seems quite odd on the surface. But we’ll learn how it exemplifies the kind of humanity, vulnerability, and grace that followers of Jesus are called to embody.

Our cultural climate makes it easy for us to dismiss people who are different from us without a second thought. But what happens when God is using those very people to try to teach us something we need to learn? At Kindred, we fully include women in the life and leadership of our church. And while some of us may feel that that stance needs no explanation, others of us come from church backgrounds where the role of women was restricted. In fact, some of us have been personally harmed by a previous church’s restrictions on women. Sadly, the church in America has earned a reputation for being a pretty exclusive community. That’s because many churches have chosen to focus on judging and condemning people rather than embracing them. So it’s important to recognize that exclusive churches do not reflect what God is like! Most of us have been presented with two basic options for how to think about sex. The one many of us learned in church tends to produce an extraordinary amount of shame. The one we’ve learned from secular society inevitably harms us and others. Both options are flawed. So as followers of Jesus, we need a better way to think about sex—a way that helps and doesn’t harm, a way that’s faithful to the God who loves us all. In today’s sermon, we’ll identify some serious problems with the two views of sex we’ve likely been taught. Then we’ll take a fresh look at Scripture and discover how it offers us a better way.

Research shows that the vast majority of us are either in a long-term romantic relationship or we’d like to be in one in the future. And of course, we all want relationships that are healthy and happy. But we have a tendency to look for relationship guidance in some pretty unhelpful places. Nobody likes being pressured to give money. It’s deeply uncomfortable, to say the least. And yet, sadly, many of us have felt intense pressure from church leaders to give money to the church. (Couple that with high profile stories of churches misusing funds and pastors getting obscenely rich, and it’s no wonder our guard goes up whenever church leaders start talking about money.) So in today’s sermon, we’re taking a very different approach as we explore why our financial support of the church matters. We’ll see how one biblical pastor actually goes out of his way to remove any pressure his congregation might feel to give. And we’ll discover an authentic, guilt-free, joy-filled approach to investing financially in the mission of the church.

Most of us could probably name a time when someone showed up to be with us at an important moment in our life. Stories like these remind us that our presence is powerful. That’s an especially important insight for the way we do church. A growing number of Christians today are wrestling with the question: What is God really like? It’s understandable. For many of us, the God of all-encompassing love we were taught to sing about as kids seems quite different from the God our church taught us to believe in as adults. One mystery at the heart of the Christmas story is that God comes to be with us as one of us–that is, as a human person with a body. This flies in the face of our typical assumption that ‘being spiritual’ or ‘getting closer to God’ has nothing to do with our bodies.
