He was an aggressive goalkeeper during his amazing career at Loyola University Maryland & was in goal on that historic night vs New York Cosmos, shutting them out 1-0 at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. Houska was also the face of the team, always taking time to make personal appearances at youth clinics and other events around Memphis. The Uruguayan attacker talks about how he got news of the shutdown. Martinez explains what his initial thoughts were and how he coped with life without match days.

The NWSL Challenge Cup, located in Utah, is set to begin Saturday, June 27th. The opening match will feature the North Carolina Courage versus the Portland Thorns. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m. central time, airing on CBS. The tournament will run through July 26th. UPDATE: Due to several positive COVID-19 tests, the https://www.orlandocitysc.com/pride (Orlando Pride) have decided to not participate in the Challenge Cup.

Mulqueen discussed the challenges of training when they cannot be together even for individual workouts. As restrictions have lifted, a new challenge awaited Mulqueen: practice while observing social distancing. Coach explains how Assistant Coach Ben Pirmann and he made it work from past experiences. He also proudly talks about how the team's veteran leaders have assisted in maintaining player morale on and off the pitch.
The announcement of the return of soccer, combined with progression to small group training, has Tim Mulqueen more excited than ever. Coach tells Tim and Brodee about the drills designed specifically to adhere to local health guidelines. It's uncharted territory for nearly every coach, but Mulqueen says the players are responding well to training.
While Mulqueen speaks proudly of the skill of his club, he is especially proud of the team's genuine respect and empathy for others. He chalks it up to the character of the players and the off-pitch leadership of Tim Howard.

He was a National Champion & 2nd Team All-American goalkeeper, catching the eyes of pro scouts here and abroad.

While most know Ben as Head Coach Tim Mulqueen's right-hand man, his soccer story from player to second generation coach is one we are excited to share with you.
Pirmann was solid college player, enjoying several successful season as a midfielder at http://www.msuspartans.com (Michigan State University). Tim Van Horn and Brodee Scott ask him about his playing days. Eventually, he transitioned from midfield to eventually coaching on the touchline of the Spartans. That spell went extremely well. In addition to four Elite Eight appearances, Pirmann was named National Top Assistant Coach in 2016 & 2017 by https://www.collegesoccernews.com/ (College Soccer News).
Pirmann left no doubt about his leadership abilities during his next stop. He led https://www.detcityfc.com/ (Detroit City FC) to a 49-17-17 record in the http://www.npsl.com (NPSL) (now in https://www.nisaofficial.com/ (NISA)), routinely drawing crowds of over 6,000. He is remembered fondly by the DCFC faithful.

There was some other news occurring around the soccer world. Tim, who took German in high school and college, believes this is called "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Behind_closed_doors_(sport) (Geisterspiele)." As you'd expect, there was a strong reaction one way or the other from fans.
One faction of opposition dislikes the concept of empty stadium matches. Others feel the medical & safety personnel needed on match day could be used better elsewhere.
Some of those in favor of an early May restart crave a sense of normalcy. Also, https://www.kicker.de/ (Kicker magazine) estimates 13 of the 36 clubs in the top 2 divisions would become insolvent if the season does not restart. This would be an economic blow for several communities.
In other news, ESPN's soccer website reports that https://www.laliga.com/en-GB (La Liga) is helping in the search for a coronavirus solution. The league has a supercomputer that is usually dedicated solely to fighting online piracy of league matches. Tim and Brodee discuss how powerful this computer is and how it's now helping scientists.

Pandemic Halts Season Soccer leagues around the world have suspended their seasons due to the https://podcave.app/dashboard/planner/cdc.gov/coronavirus (Coronavirus). The https://podcave.app/dashboard/planner/uslchampionship.com (USL Championship), where Memphis 901 FC plays, is among those halting play in hopes of limiting infections. Currently, play is suspended through May 10. In keeping with accepted best practices, Coach Mulqueen joins the podcast by phone. Coach, also known as "Mulch", tells the guys that it's a very busy time for the club. Although there are no matches at the moment, Mulqueen discusses how this is not a vacation time for the players. He describes how his staff are helping players be prepared for whenever the next match comes.
Nevertheless, Mulch To Discuss Although there was just one regular season match before the stoppage, there was plenty to discuss. The preseason seemed uneventful, because much of it was conducted out of ton. Mulqueen reveals it was far from routine. He shares his opinion on training on the Gulf Coast and how the team developed on and away from the pitch. Many thought that the change of venue was the biggest story of the preseason. Days before the season opener however, we all learned a certain legend at the club and national level would be the starting goalkeeper. Coach Mulqueen discusses how the club "hid" Tim Howard in the preseason.
Confidence Well-Based In the offseason Howard, fellow owner Craig Unger and Coach Tim Mulqueen were confident the 2020 squad would become playoff contenders. The opening (and so far ONLY) match of the season proved their faith to be well placed. On Monday Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland issued a https://covid19.memphistn.gov/ ("Safer At Home" order). The order is effective Tuesday, March 24. At this time, it is effective until midnight April 7, 2020. He chats with Tim Van Horn about that order in this special episode.
The order, according to the https://covid19.memphistn.gov/ (city's website), is aimed at "directing all residents of Memphis to stay inside their homes, and immediately limit all movement outside of their homes beyond what is absolutely necessary to take care of essential needs." Most surrounding municipalities implemented similar measures.
Mayor Strickland provides insight into the current situation in the city and why he feels the order was necessary. Strickland told Tim that he speaks with the http://www.shelbytnhealth.com/ (Health Department) daily to monitor the spread of the virus. He talked about how the dynamic changed with the occurrence of "community spread" and the likely reasons for the increased number of infections locally.
Acknowledging what is a difficult situation for everyone, Strickland expressed empathy for those negatively impacted by the order. He also talked about the decision making process and the advice he received from the medical community. He gave several local and national examples of the medical professionals and organizations. Mayor Strickland reviewed some of the activities residents are able to do during this stay-at-home period. It costs $10/week for as much coaching and as many days as kids want. That means he or she can come up to 5 days a week. Enrollment is rolling, which means players can sign up to join whenever their schedule allows. No one is turned away who can’t pay.
Ellen and Bernardo talk about the early growth of the program. It is expanding to many more fields. Despite its short history, the organization has already witnessed stories of team and personal triumphs. Because of its rapid growth, donations of time, equipment and money are needed. DC United and MLS alum Carey Talley talks about his career and beyond in this half of the podcast.
Tim Van Horn & Brodee Scott chat with Carey about his soccer roots, which run deep in his family. Although he didn't earn a spot from an early soccer tryout, Talley made the team the next season. He hasn't looked back since!
Despite that initial setback, Talley became a standout on his club and high school teams. His strong work ethic and overall skill made him a valuable and versatile option on the pitch, earning him the chance to represent his country. He played for the United States Under 17, Under 20 and Under 23 teams. Several college scholarship offers followed.
After experience success and growth in his game at The University of North Carolina, Talley headed for his next challenge. Carey takes us inside Draft Day, and what it was like to be a rookie on a veteran-filled team, DC United.
He tasted team success early, as DC United defeated legendary Brazilian side Vasco da Gama to win the Copa Interamericana. That same year, United edged Toluca to win the CONCACAF Champions' Cup. Talley then got to raise the MLS Cup in 1999, defeating the LA Galaxy.
His reputation as a reliable passer and defender fueled a successful career that spanned over a decade.
Following his retirement Carey Talley, whose parents have played a major role in the creation of this region's largest soccer complex, is continuing to grow the game himself. He holds an "A" coaching license and is active in developing the next generation of players.

Rudi Schiffer started in marketing, but he ended up doing so much more. Schiffer was the heartbeat of a club that endured multiple owners and three losing seasons. His move from another profession soccer club paved a smoother beginning in a city that was new to the sport.
Although he had never seen a soccer match, Bob Brame was one of the original radio broadcasters. Brame talks about some big matches and how his play-by-play partner once left the press box in the middle of a match and never came back! Bob was the entertaining eyes and ears of Memphis Rogues soccer.
Hal Downing worked in Ticket Sales and establishing the original Booster Club. Downing was the figurative hands and feet of the club. Not only did he arrange Booster Club events, he also developed and facilitated youth soccer clinics around the city.

Numerous team and individual honors rolled in. When things seemed to be going great, they got even better. Mulrooney earned his first cap with the national team. Brodee and Tim talk with him about being part of a squad that was poised for a successful stretch of international play.
Richard's play garnered him continued respect, despite a moves to other clubs and an injury. He earned Comeback Player of the Year while at FC Dallas and helped Houston win an MLS Cup. Mulrooney was recently honored in San Jose. He was inducted into the Earthquakes Hall of Fame.
