Tuesday night was amazing - I rented out the First Church in Jamaica Plain here in Boston to lay down the acoustic, nylon, and lead vocal tracks for my next batch of songs I'm working on. Set up 2 mics: AT4040 about a foot from the guitar, and the Bluebird ranging between 2.5 feet to 5.5 feet. Natural reverb! Sounds so beautiful. I can't wait to edit and mix it, and share the sounds with you!

I strongly urge to look for opportunities that your city offers. You never know if you qualify for a grant that could make a significant impact on your artistic career. I just finished to applying to one of them, I don't find out for a few months but it feels good knowing I gave it a shot. And at the very least, it forces you to have your artist resume updated and looking sharp!

We are washed up on the shore, with our subconscious speaking to the Universe, the Way. And so we yield to enmity. Opposing waves of energy – the friction. This happens all the time, to everyone. Sometimes good things come, and they go away. What can we learn about this? This yin + yang of happenings, of life. When someone we love dies, we tend to really feel the finite-ness of life. Mortality. It takes a death to look all around. The Universe then speaks – “You won’t see, until we’re swimming. Try moving still – through me, through the same breath, as the sea’s spectrum of wavelengths. In this point of subconscious enlightenment from the Universe, we rise and regain strength. “I no longer am afraid. It takes death to look all around”.

Moving on to Track #8! This one's called "I, The Lurker". It sticks out like a sore thumb because of its mood. It's chaotic, evil, dark, all those things. Here are my stream of consciousness notes I had when creating this song:
So the album is going along, starting with inspiration, enlightenment, excitement, infatuation. Leads to confusion, reality sinking in, and then comes doubt. Extreme doubt, lack of confidence + direction leads to feeling lost and depressed. Down. At the bottom, we are most desperate. Ravenously looking for a way out. What happened to the old me, when I was excited & passionate about my path, my art, my mission? Looking for that old self so desperately. All of this happening in the mind and heart. This depression exposes a side of you, a dark side. Impatient, selfish, cynical, extreme. In our darkest moment, we fade away. Facing ego death. A part of us dies, here at the end of “I, The Lurker”.

It’s out of sight? What is? The purpose. The drive, the will. It’ll always be away from your grasp, your reach. Never to be seen. It’s all been an illusion. Unattainable. A mirage. Not feeling connected to something brings me way down. I always want something to work on, to create. I remember around “Soliloquy” days, I would come home from work and just lay on the couch. Feeling such low drive. Lost. I’m on the same couch right now, 1.5 years later. The sadness hints are from doubt + frustration + fear that maybe I’m not on the right path and I’m wasting my time doing something I’ll never succeed in. And then you hear about how Chevy Chase was so depressed, or Cornell/Bennington killing themselves. There will always be something trying to bring you down. Some thought, or army of thoughts.

I like what I wrote for Sundrug. It ends in a confused state of calm with that sudden modulation to F. It’s serene, but very odd and confusing…sort of like the music is saying “well, that’s life – that’s how the cookie crumbles”. The rays get pitched down at the end, like drooping down and melting away. Falls into Cadabra Pearls. In this song, it’s all about the doubt. “I’m not so sure…these pearls of wisdom…are they to draw me in…and push me down?” Sort of talking to people that say “do what you love”, “keep going, never give up”. Days like today make me really doubt it. Am I on the right track? Am I not “working smart”? Feeling like I need to justify myself. Always starting things that I don’t finish. So much doubt about my future & dreams. It’s taking too long, waves of losing patience. Am I on the wrong track? The cadabra pearls are the words of wisdom, these magical balls of inspiration that drive you to pursue your dreams. But are they magical because of their motivational power, or because they may be an illusion? This song is about the doubt of the journey. Gotta think of more words and phrases.

I've decided to go with Andres Mayo. I sent him track #7 of my new album and he mastered it for me to approve. I friggin love it guys - super crisp and strong, the right amount of presence and very clear. I did some serious comparison with the original mix as well as a Cloudbounce version. The Andres version wins. I will go with that :D

Although I'm always pretty secretive about the music I'm working on, there are 2 people who I confide in to give me their honest feedback about my progress: my brother Mario and my partner Erica. They both provide different types of feedback, both so so valuable. I recommend having an "inner circle" of some sort when it comes to the music you are making. Last week I had the idea to come up with my own acoustic arrangement to this song - it was such a blast to do! I highly recommend coming up with stuff like this: acoustic arrangements of simple songs you like. It really forces you to think about how you to approach the melody and harmony. It challenges your relationship with the fretboard. Do it!!!

Mastering is the final step to the music production process, and it can cost anywhere from $0 to thousands of dollars to master an album. There's a lot to learn in this realm, and I'm still finding my way with it. One day I definitely want to learn how to do it myself, I just know it requires a ton of ridiculously expensive equipment. Finally getting over my week long nightmare of upgrading to Apple's new Mojave OS, realizing that ProTools can't run with it, and then the gigantic mess of going down to Yosemite, only to upgrade up to High Sierra. I had to download ALL of my apps, plugins, and programs from scratch. I'm almost back to normal! This episode is a gigantic warning for you guys. Maynard was actually holding on to this song for a while - you can see footage of him in his old band "CAD" playing it in 1987. FYI Tool released this song in 1994! This one is confusing! Written back in around 2009/2010, it's in 10/4 and it's centered around D. There's some cool arrangement stuff going on here, though I'm not crazy about the drum sound in this recording - it's from an old drum machine. I had to do a lot of EQ to make the hi hat much less harsh, but I lost some audio quality by doing so. You still get the idea! I actually think there should be some saxophone somewhere in this song. Thoughts?

This riff/idea was written back in 2013. I've always liked this one! There's a strange contrast between the (bit Black Sabbath-ish) riff and the verses. Another oldie - love the title, it fits the music well. It's in 10/4 - sort of doesn't feel like it though. This is one of my favorite basslines I've written! I love how it dances around the drum groove and guitar riff. Can you hear any other instruments being playing over this? Well, besides a phone alarm.

Another super oldie, circa 2010. It all started with a phone recording at the piano rooms at UMass Amherst. I had this weird vocal idea ("slipping the venom inside the rose...etc") that never made too much sense. But reviving it with some more arrangement, and slightly altering the lyrics totally brought it to life! Needs to head somewhere though. Thoughts?

Such an old song! Man, Champagne Dizza dates back to sophomore year in college, so around 2010. I've always liked this one and it was awesome to revive it. Well this one was a friggin' blast! Lotta potential here, it's a bit drone-y but I think that's why I love it. I mean I GUESS I can add a section with more chords. This one is also fairly recent (March 2018). It's got a nice open, sort of mountainous sound to it. I'm using this killer program called EZ Drummer - check it out! This Riff#16 is interesting because the capo is on the 11th, only on strings D to the high E. Completely changes up the fretboard! I wrote this one back in November 2016. It's got some potential to be pretty powerful. What do you think of jaggedness? What could you add to it?
One downside of this weird capo situation is that it messes everything up if you bump into it just a little. Oh well.

One year ago today we lost Chris Cornell. RIP to one of the greatest voices we've ever heard and felt. "Like A Stone" was one of my favorite songs growing up. His voice gives me chills, still to this day. I wanted to pay tribute to him by providing some guitar harmonies behind his incredible isolated vocal from the song. Rest easy, Chris.
