Change The Game: Recent Episodes

Dr. Michael Buffington

Change The Game is a conversation for men and women that want to squeeze all they can from life.  Those that see life as a game we get to play.  One that is about your body, your soul, your relationships, and how you make money.

As your host, Dr. Buffington will share his 26 plus years as a chiropractor and entrepreneur.  The painful lessons he has paid for as a man, a husband, and a father (divorce, a son’s addiction, and financial loss) and the tools, tactics, and insights which lead him here today.  All to inspire, guide, and lead you to be more, do more.

Life is a team sport!

I am not a quitter, I am extremely competitive and have never looked at quitting anything as an option. One day I had my mind blown when a good friend told me there is a difference between quitting and stopping. If something is not of any benefit and can even be a detriment then maybe you just need to stop doing it. Where in your life have you quit where you shouldn’t have, and where do you need to stop where you haven’t yet?

Fear is false evidence appearing real and it is widespread and very dangerous to all of us. Fact checking yourself frequently and keeping yourself rational and not emotional can have a huge impact. You can not answer an emotional question, logically, or vice versa. Are you being careful with what you are putting in your mind, just like you are with what you eat?

Just like a picture frame has 4 sides, if you were to remove any 1 of them, it would fall apart, the structure of your life can be seen the same way. Body, being, balance and business are the 4 sides of that frame. The beauty of the system is that if you have one of your sides that is by far stronger than all the others, you can appropriate how you built up that strong side and apply it to a weak side and make the entire system stronger.

Remembering who you are is something that is applicable in any aspect of your life. That one simple statement, when said to someone, is just a simple check on their self awareness, self esteem, and self worth. It is vital to remember who you are in your business, if you don’t then no one you serve, take care of, supply, or interact with will either, and you’ll be operating at a subpar version of yourself.

Having a game plan, revving the engine to the redline, and spinning the tires to warm them up is all great, as long as you don’t lose control halfway down the strip and end up in a ball of fire. We all need to know when to drag the breaks and regain control of our lives. By dragging the break you keep all the momentum without sacrificing the control.

Freedom looks different to everyone that looks at it. To some, freedom is money, to others it’s time and space to do what they want. Where freedom goes wrong is when you strive for someone else's version of freedom, or even worse, someone tries to push on you what your freedom should be. Is what you are doing in your life and business moving you towards or away from your freedom?

You do not have to have the magical “it” factor to be successful in your personal life or business, or to be fit and healthy. Plenty of people have the factor and have no results to show for it. If you don’t have the “it” factor, you can overcome that with daily disciplines, just be careful not to do too much and overdo it. Where in your life is there something you’d like to level up, and what is a daily action you can take to get there.

Almost all of the most successful people have a system they follow to run their businesses efficiently. Systems and processes are what keep the gears turning and everything running on all cylinders. But when the system becomes an identity and you have forced yourself into a box and can no longer be yourself, the system becomes a hindrance. Have you ever felt trapped inside one of the systems you use on a regular basis?

Before anything else, you must have a real desire to move to the next level. To go from good to great you can’t play things safe all the time, you have to be willing to risk it, and put yourself out there far enough to win at a different level and make a bigger impact. You have to take time to celebrate yourself at each level. The shift in what needs to be done to go from great to elite isn’t massive, but the results are.

Our thoughts can come from 3 places. God or a higher power, however you see that. Our own internal voice. Or, lastly, the devil or darkness, however you view it. Where in your life do you need to ask yourself that? We rarely put thought into where our thoughts are stemming from. If you recognize where the thought came from, right from the start, you can set yourself on a different path or avoid a path you don’t want.

How we think can make or break us on any given day. Are you thinking through challenges that present themselves or are you just reacting with emotion? She picked up the 15 pound frozen turkey, over her head, and spiked it into the trash can that pulled out of the cabinet, much like a football player spikes a ball after a touchdown. God will never give you more than you can handle is the phrase we’ve heard most of our life. Except, in reality, God gives us more than we can handle. God does these things to stretch us to become more of a person than where we are currently. When he does, it is for a reason.

The Seagull Approach is simply walking by and dropping things or work on someone’s desk and continuing to walk right on by. This is good because it implies a level of trust in your team, but oftentimes people need more than that, they need direction. When you do things like this you need to be sure you are setting yourself and your team up for success, not frustration. The same ideas hold true in your family life.

Can you be both optimistic and realistic at the same time? I’d like to think you can. When you are realistic you are relying on the facts and reality and when you are optimistic, you are relying on emotion and feelings. When coupled together these two can be very powerful as long as you can recognize the difference. When we were young, we had the optimism to feel like we could do or be anything. Where in your life do you need more optimism?

If you just succumb to feelings rather than being rational, you could end up bailing on something before it has a chance to work. When you make big decisions, stay committed and stay true. Be sure to focus on the “why” you made that decisions so you can use that a fuel to help push you forward through the doubt.

Much like when grinding down and shaping a piece of metal on a grinding wheel, we need to make sure we stop, step back, and look at what we are doing and how things are coming along to make sure we are getting the results we want. Look back with clarity on where you were and where you are now and ask yourself what has changed and how far have you come? That will enable you to move forward with more power and certainty than ever before.

Like the initial push of the pedal when riding a bike, we slowly get ourselves moving in the direction we want to go and then build momentum as we continue to move forward. A push anywhere throughout your life can be all you need, be it spiritual, exercise, family, really anything can help.
