He has authored about 150 scientific contributions, action plans for cetaceans, and other work intended to promote their protection and reduce human impact on marine ecosystems.

Jean-Pierre Desforges, Post-Doctorial Research Fellow at McGill University in Montreal Canada. He did his Masters at the University of Victoria (Canada) working on beluga whales in the Beaufort Sea and got his Ph.D. at Aarhus University (Denmark) working on a wide variety of marine mammal species in the Arctic and North Atlantic (ringed seal, harp seals, hooded seal, polar bear, killer whale, bottlenose dolphin, beluga whale).
The main focus of his research has been marine mammal toxicology studying how environmental pollution accumulates in marine mammals and what effect it may have on their health and fitness.

The Vaquita get caught in gillnets that are targeting Totoaba fish, whose swim bladders are in high demand in China. Tom discusses how the legal Totoaba fishery led to the reduction in fish and porpoise populations by the gillnet.
There are an estimated 15 individuals left in the world.
Dr. Thomas A. Jefferson has been studying marine mammals since 1983, when he was an undergraduate at the University of California, Santa Cruz. His Master’s degree is from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, and his Ph.D. is from Texas A&M University. Tom is Director of Clymene (KLIM IN EE) Enterprises and an Independent Researcher at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center, NOAA Fisheries, where his main interests are the development of marine mammal identification aids, and investigating the systematics and population ecology of the more poorly-known species of dolphins and porpoises. Most of his work has been related to conservation and management of marine mammals threatened by human activities. He has published over 170 books and papers on marine mammals.
Dr. Holly Fearnbach, speaks to Dr. Ashley Scarlett about “SR3”, which stands for SeaLife Response, Rehabilitation, and Research. This program studies the health of endangered southern resident killer whales and the decline in their prey. But, she also gives us some hope for this population and their health status and tells listeners how they can stay connected to the conservation efforts of this population.

Dr. Vanessa Pirotta is this week’s guest talking to host Dr. Chris Parsons about her research on humpback whales with drones and “snotbots”. They also talk about whale entanglements in shark nets, swimming with whale tourism and the famous white humpback whale “Migaloo”.
This week Chris Parsons interviews Sally Mizroch and world expert on the sei whale. Sei whales were heavily hit by whaling and her research indicates that many stocks have never really recovered. But this whale is largely overlooked by marine conservation groups.

Dr. Eric Archer is Chris Parsons’s guest this week. Dr. Archer discusses the work of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) marine mammal genetics lab, his research in fin whales, and what it’s like to do oceanic surveys for whales and dolphins and to live on one of NOAAs research vessels.
Dr. Archer is also co-Chair of the Society for Marine Mammalogy’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee and he discusses what it was like to be one of the first African Americans with a PhD in marine mammal science, issues with diversity and representation in the ocean sciences, and some of the initiatives that his committee has launched to help ensure marine mammal scientists have equal opportunities.

Dr. Lorelei Crerar is Dr. Chris Parsons’s guest this week. Dr. Crerar talks about how Georg Steller discovered the Steller’s sea cow, and about its extinction.
They also talk about the “bigfoot” of the oceans – the mythical sea monkey that Steller reported seeing.
They also talk about Dr. Crerar’s research that discovered a new population of Steller’s sea cow that went extinct in the middle ages, and the trade of sea cow bone, or “mermaid ivory”. During her research, she discovered that some of this “mermaid ivory’ actually came from protected whale and dolphins.

This week Dr. Chris Parsons interviews Dr. Lee Talbot. Lee has had a long and interesting career in ecology and conservation, but he was especially influential for being the writer of both the US Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act. He tells us about how he managed to persuade President Nixon about the importance of conserving whales and dolphins, his role in ending commercial whaling, and also his interesting parallel career as a prize-winning racing car driver!
Dr. Michelle Barbieri is the guest on this week’s podcast talking about NOAA’s efforts to conserve the endangered Hawaiian monk seal. In addition to the threats that the seals face, and the various conservation initiatives that have to put in place to help the seals’ recovery, we discuss what it is like to be a marine mammal veterinarian and ways to get a career studying marine mammal health.
