Mark Rowland could not find a tomato variety he really enjoyed so set about breeding his own concentrating entirely on flavour. The end result was so successful they were persuaded to market it, setting up Gourmet Genetics in 2011. Based on the Suffolk/Norfolk border The Bressingham Gardens were founded by Alan Bloom of Blooms Nurseries in 1953. The gardens were opened to the public in 1962 with six acres and 500 different species and cultivars. His son Adrian Bloom went on to further develop the gardens as he explained to Ken Crowther when he took him for a tour of the site.

With the weather in the UK at its coldest, it’s a good time to look ahead to the summer when the garden is once again filled with colour. Garden centres and mail order catalogues are filled with summer flowering bulbs. There is plenty of varieties to pick from as Geoff Hodge told Ken Crowther.
When it comes to working in horticulture there is a huge variety of area which people can work in from production, to landscaping and maintenance, tree work and lawns. John Mason from ACS in Australia talks about the variety of opportunities open to those who want to work horticulture.
At the end of November 2016 John Mason from ACS in Australia attended an Australian Institute of Horticulture seminar in Cairns. The theme of the conference was centred on urban horticulture as John explains.
Straw bale gardening is something John Mason from ACS in Australia has come across a number of times in his years in horticulture. The technique involves making a straw bale very wet; dig a small hole in the top and fill with soil and then plant your plants. John believes it’s a great way of growing vegetables and herbs.
Well known dahlia grower Dave Gilham has diversified and has taken up growing daffodils. For the past three years he’s been growing the garden bulbs and last year won a National Trophy class in 2016 with 12 flowers. He will be trying to win again this year as he told Ken Crowther.

The quince trees in the fruit orchards of Wilkin and Sons in Tiptree are waiting for the first frosts of the season so the fruit can be picked. The fruits are looking yellow and ready to eat. However, if you took a bite it would initially taste nice but leave an unpleasant sensation in your mouth as Tiptree farm manager Dan told Ken Crowther.

Growing rhubarb in a small space has become easier thanks to the development of a new strain perfect for whose living in flats. The stalks of Lilibarber grow to just four inches in height. The leaves can also be eaten as they contain lower levels of oxalic acid as a member of the Lubera team explains.
There is nothing better than growing your own fruit and vegetables. While there are some varieties you can grown any time of the year in Australia, Spring is the best time to grow most vegetables. The only downside is that Spring is also the best time for pests and diseases as John Mason from ACS in Australia reports.
Gardens across the UK are a blaze of colour with plants and vegetables growing in gardens, pots and tubs. The secret to having a colourful display is feeding. Baby Bio’s Anita Dent thinks many gardeners don’t feed their plants because they don’t know which one to use.
Mulberry Trees have a royal connection which can be traced by to the Tudors. Historically the Marks Hall estate near Coggeshall in Essex had trees but they disappeared. The Big Boost Challenge was about planting identical containers and baskets and feeding one every two weeks with just water the other was using a little Baby Bio outdoors in the watering can. Anita Dent who took part in the challenge showed Ken Crowther the noticeable difference in her two baskets.

Coton Manor in Northamptonshire is a 17th century manor house set in 10 acres of gardens. The gardens were laid out in the 1920s by the present owner’s grandparents, and developed and extended over the years. Susie Pasley-Tyler gave Ken Crowther a guided tour of the grounds.

The Essex & Herts Air Ambulance trust have launched their ‘Summer of Open Gardens’ for anyone who loves their garden. It doesn’t matter if your garden is the size of a postage stamp or huge estate the idea to is to open it for family, friends and neighbours and raise money for this life-saving charity as Jackie Brown, Essex & Hert Air Ambulance explained.
Nothing tastes better than strawberries grown in your own garden. They are one of the first food plants you will see in the garden centre. Mottisfont Abbey is a historical priory and country estate in Hampshire operated by the National Trust since 1957. The grounds include a walled garden which would have previously been used to grow food for the abbey. Lord Michael Howard, Chairman of Hospice UK, is one of the beneficiaries of the National Garden Scheme and without their support they would not be able to carry out the valuable work they do. The serious lack of hard weather is reflected in the soil conditions. Market gardener Andrew McTurk who farms in Brentwood in Essex says the soil is not in particularly good order this year. A hard frost is extremely beneficial as it gives the top tilth where the surface is lovely and nice. As he explained to Ken Crowther it doesn’t need many frosts but there hasn’t been enough this year to make a good job.
This year, 2016, is the 300th anniversary of the birth of Lancelot ‘Capability Brown’, a garden designer who changed the landscaped of the English Countryside. Some of the rarely-opened Capability Brown landscapes are opening to the public as part of the NGS. Carol Evans, festival director spoke to Ken Crowther about his work.
Waddesdon Manor is near Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire, it is an delightful building and wonderful garden built in the style of a 16th century French chateau. The old roses are very beautiful but only flowered once and had a very narrow colour range whereas the modern roses repeat flower and came in different colours. People have been using Grazers in their gardens to keep away pigeons and rabbits and all sorts of pests away for years. The formula is a natural product as the active ingredient is food grade calcium which works by coating the leaf and benefits the plant as calcium is a fertilizer. Jonathan Tebb Roger worked on the trials from the outset. He talked to Ken Crowther about the product.
Artist Tom Hoare has a range of metal bird sculptures made out of recycled oil drums. Each piece is handmade and Fairtrade and by a group of artists in Zimbabwe who produce some of the premium work in the world. The range includes a number of different UK birds including the avocet, the symbol of the RSPB. Tom spoke to Ken Crowther about the range.
Having spent many years as a frustrated balcony gardener in London, Sue O’Neill moved to the Cotswolds where she could create the garden of her dreams. However, she couldn’t find the right clothes to garden in, leaving her either too hot or too cold or didn’t keep her dry. Borde Hill Garden is just outside of Haywards Heath in West Sussex in south England. Set in over 200 acres of garden, park and woodlands it also offers view across the Sussex High Weald. As the weather is warming up Bayer’s Anita Dent and Ken Crowther have returned to the small garden in St Ives in Cambridgeshire to take a look at the planting. What the garden lacks in ground space is made up by having vertical structures which increases the potential to grow a variety of different plants.
A new weather-proof structure at fruit growers Wilkin & Son at Tiptree in Essex has finally been finished. The size of large greenhouse and polythene clad the inside of the structure is home to racks of planted strawberries. It’s the first of its kind in the UK, and they are rightly proud as Anton Thurgood explained to Ken Crowther.

A berberis which has been growing at the Marks Hall Estate near Coggeshall in Essex has been dramatically reduced in size. The plant which came from the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew over 30 years ago had grown to more than 20ft across and 23ft high. Not much flowers in January, however, shortly after Christmas the witch hazel will start to bloom and will continue whatever the weather. At the top of a windy hill in Essex you will find the RHS Garden Hyde Hall. It can also be a bit cold, meaning that some of the plants need more protection from the elements. A 25-year partnership between Suffolk County Council and Suez is turning the county’s household waste into energy. The poem In Flanders Field by John McCrae was largely responsible for beginning the tradition of wearing red poppies for remembrance. The common poppy is the official county flower for Essex and next summer it is hoped a new array of poppies will be seen in surprising places as Peter Holmes has been finding out.
There are two different types of strawberry being grown at Wilkin and Sons farm in Tiptree. One is grown in polytunnel and the other left uncovered. Arable farmer Hugh Pegrum’s family have farmed the land in Epping since 1880. All the crops are combinable, so no root crops like potato or sugar beet. All the autumn cultivations have been done, and the wheat for the 2016 harvest has just been planted as Hugh told Ken Crowther.

Peeking over the gardens of Colchester is a giant sunflower grown by Malcolm Bacon. This 11ft 3in Russian Giant is in the running for Thompson & Morgan’s UK’s tallest sunflower competition. Peter Holmes has been out in the north Essex town to see if he can spot it.
