CW: a few f-bombs, discussion of trauma, mentions of SA and other abusive tactics

What happens when two neurodivergent therapists get deep into a conversation about therapy vs coaching?

It all started with a tweet, and suddenly, Laurel and Juniper found themselves down a rabbit hole, asking: Is there really a rift between therapists and coaches? If so, why?

In this first deep dive, we attempt to stay on track (but let’s be honest, side quests abound) as we untangle misinformation, break down how each profession is marketed, what kind of education is required, and the potential costs—and harms. Plus, there’s a bonus game, Who Said It? where Laurel guesses if the quote came from a therapist or a coach (play along), and a little exposé on debarred mental health professionals now moonlighting as coaches. And of course, we’ll share our best tips for anyone shopping for a therapist or a coach.

  • Are you a coach or therapist who wants to weigh in? We want to hear from you!
  • Are you a client of a coach, therapist, or maybe both? We want to hear from you, too!

Drop a comment, send us a voice message, or email. You are invited into this conversation, and we welcome as many side quests, rants, or hot takes as you want to dish.

Please share your voice with us! We would love to hear from you!

In this very first episode of After Billable Hours, Juniper and Laurel dive into a whole new format (because we like to keep things fresh, right?). Brace yourself for some laughs, cringey childhood memories, and more ADHD talk than you can spin a fidget at.

“Quote-unquote” alert: Juniper says it… a lot. Like, more than 5 times (they counted), while Laurel manages to keep it at a totally normal level. Be clear, we both say "quote-unquote", is that a therapist thing?

Meme Picks of the Week: Yes, memes made it into the show. Because of course they did.

ADHD & Meds: This week, we get real about starting ADHD medication later in life. Spoiler alert: it’s like realizing your brain has been on airplane mode for the past few decades.

Cringe-worthy Childhood Stories: Let’s just say ADHD in childhood wasn’t always cute. Prepare for some stories that are equal parts cringe, a little sad, and oddly comforting... if you know, you know.

Tips for the Curious: Are you thinking about ADHD meds? We share some tips and insights for anyone curious about the journey.

So grab your favorite snack, settle in, and let us entertain, educate, and maybe even relate with you for the next hour or so.

In this episode, Laurel talks with Molly Fitzgerald King, a licensed art therapist and licensed professional counselor. They talk not only about Molly’s clinical work, but about the advocacy work she is doing on many different levels, about our understanding of advocacy as professionals, and even our understanding of the narratives that play out for us as professionals in our own lives.

Molly specializes in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and treats individuals with addiction, trauma disorders, depression, and anxiety. Her primary focus is Autism Spectrum Disorder. Molly uses shame resilience methods and mindful self compassion, and loves to incorporate art, dance, yoga, and music into her work. She strives to make mindfulness skills more accessible for people who struggle with sitting still, and to help people find environments where they can thrive. This includes work, school, home, nutrition, movement, creative outlets, relationships, and hobbies. She believes most symptoms bubble up when our environment can’t meet our needs but we still feel stuck there. She focuses on many body based techniques designed to reduce activation.

Molly is the writer of the upcoming play “Asking Toddlers to Do Algebra,” which will debut in the city of Louisville, KY from July 25th-27th, 2024. She is also the originator of Braxton’s Bill, a bill currently in process in the Kentucky State Legislature, focused on mandating long-term substance use inpatient treatment coverage.

CW:://Mentioning words like suicide, sexual abuse, etc.

Welcome to a Shallow End episode, where we cover various mental health topics in short form, bite-sized format, all while retaining professional and educational rigor.

Have you heard of algospeak? Well, we hadn't either. Once we started looking into this, we ended up in a vortex of algorithms and mind control (ok, that's a little dramatic, but...). This discussion warrants attention, research, and awareness among mental health professionals and beyond due to the implications of how language shapes our awareness, understanding, and conceptions of serious concepts that are addressed in therapy.

Algo = algorithm

Social media users are commonly using algospeak, which is a code word used to avoid AI content moderation tools that flag user content for violating social media app rules or that might be sensitive or harmful.

Common Algospeak Words:

  • Panini/panorama/pnoramic = pandemic
  • Unalive = suicide/kill/murder
  • Seggs/shmex - sex
  • Corn or the emoji for corn = porn/adult industry
  • Cornucopia = homophobia
  • Leg Booty - member of LGBTQ community
  • Le dollar bean = lesbian
  • Accountant = sex worker
  • S.A. =- sexual assault or sexual abuse
  • Camping or going camping= abortion
  • Ninja or the emoji = derogatory terms and hate speech towards the Black community
  • Spicy eggplant = vibrator
  • Swimmers = vaccinated people
  • Yt = white people
  • Saltines = white people
  • Opposite of love = hate

In today’s holiday mental health news special:

  • The holiday blues and tips for navigating the season
  • Psychology of gift-giving
  • Paradox mindset and winter solstice
  • Supportive resource for yourself and others this holiday season

Podcast listeners will receive 15% off our upcoming live training, Liberating Joy From Loss Through Prescriptive Memory Making and Dyadic Creativity with Dreamscape Developer Nancy Gersham (code revealed at the end of the podcast).

When working with a client’s memory, how do we locate the fleeting, joyful bits so often overshadowed by loss that no new insights can emerge? This playful approach begins with curating novelty from positive felt-sense memories- then co-creating an even more novel "prescriptive" memory from these lived experiences to become where healing can happen.

In this master class, Nancy Gershman will introduce a cinematic technique for arriving at the memory our client needs to move from isolation to re-integration in the world. Case studies will demonstrate how prescriptive memories are compounded in a client’s imagination, with magic realism launching memory reconsolidation capable of updating long-term distressing memories. Live demos will give you an excellent sense of how to listen or prompt for incongruity so you can lead your client to new sources of courage and humor based on personally developed imaginal or photo-based artwork.

Implications for using this method in-person or via telehealth, with adult populations (grief and non-death related loss) and in clinical settings (hospice) will be addressed. This training requires no artistic background and applies to all licensed mental health providers.

Join us as we delve deep into individuals, products, companies, and theories within the mental health arena, all of which boldly proclaim to be the ultimate "cure-all" or a one-size-fits-all intervention.

In each episode, we scrutinize the evidence, separate fact from fiction, and explore the potential impact of these claims on mental well-being. Tune in for insightful conversations, expert perspectives, and evidence-based insights to help you make informed decisions about your mental health practice or personal journey. This series encourages a balanced and skeptical approach to media consumption, news and evidence regarding mental health treatment.

In this episode of Stay Cure-ious, we delve deep into the world of Dr. Daniel Amen and the Amen Clinics, exploring their claims about brain health, mental illness and the various products and services they offer. We critically examine Dr. Amen's use of brain scans (SPECT scans) for diagnosing mental health issues, his language and methodology, and his emphasis on lifestyle interventions. The podcast also highlights the importance of a nuanced, integrative, evidence-based mental health and wellness approach. It raises questions about the validity of Dr. Amen's claims and the potential ethical considerations in his practices.

Key Points:

  1. Dr. Daniel Amen and the Amen Clinics are known for their claims about brain health and their use of SPECT scans for diagnosing mental health issues.
  2. The podcast explores Dr. Amen's language and methodology, which often polarizes issues and emphasizes "right" and "wrong" concerning human brains and behavior.
  3. Dr. Amen's background in evangelical Christianity and its influence on his work and practices are discussed.
  4. The podcast highlights the controversy surrounding SPECT scans and their validity in diagnosing mental health conditions.
  5. The role of placebo effects and the need for a critical perspective when evaluating claims about mental health interventions are emphasized.
  6. Dr. Amen's approach to nutrition, exercise, and supplements as potential solutions to mental health issues is discussed.
  7. The podcast encourages a balanced and skeptical approach to media consumption and news.
  8. The complexity of mental health and the importance of considering multiple factors in addressing mental well-being are underscored.
  9. The podcast does not provide definitive answers but encourages listeners to approach the subject with an open and critical mindset, recognizing the complexities of mental health and wellness.

We discussed the unique experience of grief as a therapist, returning to work after loss, tending to our grief, considering what and how to discuss our grief with clients, and how differently people grieve and respond to devastating life events.

Robin has been a psychotherapist and substance abuse counselor for over 30 years. She has been a leader in her workplace, church, and community. She continues to travel on a healing journey, often not knowing where that will take her, but trying to trust the process. Her book is Spirit Son.

We spoke with Meg Sasse Stern (she/her), the Outreach and Operations Coordinator at Just The Pill, a non-profit telehealth abortion provider offering virtual and mobile clinic visits in Colorado, Minnesota, Montana, and Wyoming. Just The Pill sees patients from over 30 states, and last year their mobile clinics provided no-cost abortions to over 150 traveling Texans.

Meg has been on the front lines of abortion access in KY for 20+ years. She co-founded one of the first Practical Support Abortion Funds and has expertise in creating safer pathways to abortion access. Meg is a network weaver with experience in cross-movement collaboration. Meg enjoys travel, rest, and quality time with good people when she is not engaged in direct action as community care.

In this conversation, we discuss pregnancy care options, especially in states where abortion is now illegal (including the state where we live, Kentucky), legal issues, and how to best support a pregnant person as a mental health professional. Meg shares a fantastic resource that she created, with vetted resources for anything a person seeking an abortion would need, including information about medical abortion, organizations that offer financial support, and ways you can advocate if you want to support abortion access for all residents of this country.

This podcast episode is a conversation with Heather Ross, host of the popular Living With Your Child's Addiction podcast, trained in CRAFT, and certified ITC parent coach.

We discuss how CRAFT (community reinforcement and family training) and Invitation to Change models support your loved one (and yourself) struggling with substance use disorder. The CRAFT (Community Reinforcement and Family Training) program is a non-confrontational, evidence-based intervention for helping families affected by addiction. It helps individuals develop effective strategies for helping a loved one struggling with substance use disorder seek treatment and cope.

The invitation to Change program is based on an approach by the Center for Motivation and Change that combines the evidence-based protocol of Community Reinforcement And Family Training (CRAFT) with Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Invitation to Change provides perspectives and skills to help you encourage your loved one toward recovery while increasing your own well-being.

About Heather:

Heather Ross is a mother willing to do whatever it took to have a healthy relationship with her daughter, who struggled with Substance Use Disorder. She is a family recovery coach who is CRAFT trained and Invitation to Change Certified.
Supporting her daughter taught her to focus on their similarities instead of their differences, be present as a mother, and love her daughter unconditionally for the 21 short years she had on this earth. After her daughter lost her life to a fentanyl overdose, Heather became even more dedicated to helping families heal. Her clients call her an expert at helping them create peace of mind, space for change, and loving connection in their families.

In addition to being a parent support coach, Heather has over 20 years of experience in the recovery community and hosts the Living With Your Child’s Addiction Podcast.
When Heather is not helping other parents, she enjoys spending time in nature with her dogs, going to sound baths on the beach, traveling, and having experiences with friends and family that create beautiful memories.

In this episode, Juniper talks with Nancy Gershman, a psychotherapist, memory artist, and creator of Dreamscaping, to discuss the development and many uses of this innovative modality. Their conversation covers:

  • Nancy’s professional journey and how she came to the creation and use of Dreamscaping as a therapeutic tool.
  • Discussion about the ways in which the brain stores and holds memory, including the importance of incorporating “felt sense” memory when working toward healing.
  • Ways in which Dreamscaping can be used to address grief, trauma, and many other issues that clients bring into the therapy space.
  • And more!

Nancy Gershman, LMSW, is a psychotherapist and the developer of Dreamscaping, an imaginal and photo-based approach to treating grief and loss, supported by the way memories get encoded in the brain. More playful than painful, Dreamscaping uses resourcing, focusing on felt sense memory, re-scripting and mental simulations to shift the focus from “what do you miss?” to “what gives you joy?” After a decade of dreamscaping with the bereaved as a memory artist, Nancy was featured for her work with end of life families at VNSNY/Haven Hospice as NY1’s “New Yorker of the Week” (2016). In 2020, Routledge published Prescriptive Memories in Grief and Loss: The Art of Dreamscaping, co-authored with Barbara E. Thompson. Additional publications include case studies in Robert A. Neimeyer’s Techniques of Grief Therapy (Routledge, 2012, 2016) and Annals of American Psychotherapy (2010) with Jenna Baddeley, PhD. In addition to presenting her work internationally and working in a supervisory capacity, Nancy has been the host of Death Café New York City since 2013. Today, applications for dreamscaping range from liberating joy in those married to Ed (eating disorders), to re-gendering individuals in the trans community, to updating distressing memories in those who believe they can never return to a beloved person, place or thing.

This conversation is with Nicole Sartini, LPCC, Executive Director and co-founder of Bridge Counseling and Wellness and Co-founder of The Academy of Integrative Mental Health.

Nicole Sartini (she/her/hers) has been practicing therapy professionally since 2010 and has been working in the field as a non-professional since 1999. Sartini’s specialty centers around helping adults recovering from difficult childhoods, leaders looking to find more balance in their lives, and high-functioning individuals who suffer from anxiety or depression. She also specializes in assisting individuals going through major life changes such as: entering adulthood, starting or graduating from college, getting married, making job changes, and preparing for, or adjusting to, the birth of a child. Nicole’s counseling practice involves integrating traditional talk therapy with mind-body work through the practice of mindfulness, the use of diet and exercise, nutritional supplements, and an emphasis on developing a healthy self image.

Today, Nicole shares a bit about her path as a mental health professional, integrative group practice owner, and her philosophy supporting mind, body and soul. In this conversation, Nicole talks about self-knowledge and growth from a spiritually embodied perceptive.

A few notes about this episode. Because Nicole and I are business partners, close friends and passionate conversationalists, we ended up recording for a long time. I had to heavily edit this conversation, so please be aware that there are some rough and awkward transitions at time because I am by no means a professional editor, but I tried my best to cut and paste to include the highlights of our conversation.

Topics explored:

  • Knowing and trusting yourself by listening within to the deeper “I”
  • Operating from your personal truth
  • Embodied action to align with your beliefs
  • Embracing the whole self while serving the greater good
  • Surrendering as a practice
  • Guided embodiment practice that you can follow along with at the end of the conversation

You can connect with Nicole by following her on Instagram @edensidesanctuary or by visiting www.bridgemindbody.com.

In this episode, our director and co-founder Juniper sits down for a conversation with Robin Marie Monson-Dupuis, LCSW, SAC, RYT. Their beautiful discussion covers -

  • Robin’s personal story of grief leading to the writing of her book, Spirit Son
  • exploring and understanding ourselves as Spirit
  • how our own stories and experiences can influence the ways in which we do our work
  • clinical and spiritual methods for working with grief and trauma, and the intersection of these perspectives
  • and more!

As a psychotherapist and yoga teacher with over 30 years of experience, Robin’s goal is to help her clients uncover, or rediscover, their strengths as an individual, find peace amidst stress, trauma, or the curve balls life throws their way. Together they work to introduce and solidify wellness practices into their lives, whether in their relationships with themselves, their partners, their family, or their work. Robin works with a wide variety of clients struggling with grief, trauma, depression, anxiety, stage of life issues, marital issues, spiritual crises, and substance abuse. She specializes in working with law enforcement and first responders.

About Robin’s book, Spirit Son
When Robin Monson-Dupuis, psychotherapist and substance abuse counselor, loses her son Ethan to a heroin overdose after an eight-year journey trying to help him stay alive, it shatters everything in her world. She finds her beliefs tested: her role as a mother, her faith, her marriage, and her purpose in this world.

Spirit Son: A Mother’s Journey to Reconnect with Her Son After His Death From Heroin Overdose is a courageous memoir detailing one mother’s story of surviving her unimaginable pain, beginning to heal, and even growing after her traumatic loss. This raw account of losing a child to the opioid epidemic and struggling to find peace offers honest analysis and reflections as well as a profound message of hope: that the everlasting bond between us and our loved ones can be embraced, even deepened, despite their physical death.

This month, we have very special episode all about relationships as part of our Re-Writing Relationships Starter pack, which has all kinds of resources, including worksheets you can use in session or for yourself, journal prompts, a blog post and more. If you sign up for our monthly newsletter, you will also have access to our themed playlist in which our team members select their favorite songs related to the monthly topic!

We also have a bonus episode, as part of this series, coming out later in the month with Tammy Berman about the Collaborative Divorce process. You won’t want to miss this resource!

We put a call out about our Re-Writing Relationships to see if professionals had something to say about relationships that is a bit outside the box and comes from an integrative perspective (duh, that’s the whole point of this podcast). Anyway, we got a ton of responses and spoke with a group multi-disciplinary professionals. During our interviews, we noticed several themes and decided to organize this conversation, like a panel and grouped according to the themes.

The reason why we choose the topic of Re-Writing relationships for this month is for one, Valentines Day is in Feb and can bring up a lot for many people. A lot of the content discussed in therapy revolves around relationships; whether that be relationship to self, other humans or beyond. Relationships involve our sense of belonging, connection and intimacy - which are important themes in human life. We hope you enjoy this conversation!

In this episode, we are using the New Year as a starting point in discussing transitions, as the new year tends to be an obvious threshold. We are moving from one year to the next (according to the Gregorian Calendar) and for many can be a time of reflection and intention setting. We will meet Janus, the roman god of beginnings and namesake of the month of January, whose two faces allowed him to look into the past and future at the same time. We will discuss ideas around tending to the threshold of the new year, while both processing the year past and intentions for the year ahead with ahead with compassion. Why compassion? Because both reflecting on the past and making plans, goals or intentions for the future can for most trigger a well worn neuro pathway of shame, doubt, regret or any other combination of critical self-talk and emotions.

Today we spoke with Christina Vesalak who is dedicated to saving and transforming lives through her work as a mental health nutritionist, specifically utilizing amino acid and nutrient therapy. In this conversation, Christina discusses her personal journey with nutrition and mood. She describes the mechanics of a starving brain and how to feed it to achieve optimal functioning, maximize therapeutic work and for relapse prevention. Chrisitina also shares about her training programs and the Certification in Amino Acid Therapy for Addiction Recovery and Sustained Mental Health, which is a 5 month training program starting in a few weeks.

Christina T. Veselak is the founder and director of the Academy for Addiction and Mental Health Nutrition. She has been a licensed psychotherapist for over 30 years, and currently provides on-line Relapse Prevention Coaching and Mental Health Nutrition to a wide variety of clients.

Christina consults for supplement companies as well as IV detox programs and residential addiction treatment, helping them integrate this life-saving nutritional approach into their programs.

She is an experienced public speaker, and has presented at conferences and trainings around the country. Christina is also a founding member and former Executive Director of the Alliance for Addiction Solutions, a non-profit organization which promotes the use of nutritional and other natural modalities to support repair of the addicted brain.

Christina is committed to staying abreast of the rapidly growing science of integrative psychiatry and functional nutrition & biochemistry for mental health, and is passionate about sharing her knowledge with both the general public and professionals in the fields of addiction recovery & mental health treatment.

As integrative mental health professionals, we firmly believe in the biopscyhosocialspiritual framework that includes multiple layers and meets clients where the are at. We understand that nutrition is not a cure all or one size fits all intervention, but often times mental health professionals are not sufficiently trained in the biological aspect of the framework, which includes nutrition and its effects on the brain and body. There is an abundance of research on nutrition and mental health and it can be very confusing to sift through. In our integrative clinic, we found that many of our clients were struggling to understand what to eat and not eat for their mood as well recognizing social -emotional factors that play a role in our diet; such as disordered eating, diet culture, food insecurity etc.

Check out our courses on nutrition and supplements for mental health. We compiled the most current evidence, case studies from our own practice and knowledge from a variety of integrative practitioners and tons of resources, handouts and guided practices that you can use and share with your clients. We also share a discount code, just for our listeners during the podcast.

Today's conversation is with Lisah Sutton-Williams. Lisah is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Lisah’s specialties are anxiety, depression, life transitions, and disordered eating. She is currently the only licensed therapist with certification in Intuitive Eating in the state of KY, and she is also supervisor for up and coming clinicians in Social Work and Marriage and Family Therapy on their way to licensure. (BTW, bear with us as we troubleshoot our sound quality using zoom to record our podcasts, we will get it more smooth, we promise!)

Lisah strives to create a calm and inviting environment for her clients and to work with them, for their very unique set of needs, to find what will work best for them. She believes that through working together we can move toward healing. She is a passionate advocate for Intuitive Eating and Health at Every Size, both in her clinical work and in her own life.

Laurel and Lisah discuss Lisah's journey and work with her clients on Intuitive Eating, and the social and racial justice issues wrapped into the diet culture mentality.

Intuitive Eating is an evidenced-based, mind-body health approach, comprised of 10 Principles and created by two dietitians, Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch in 1995. It is a weight-neutral model with a validated assessment scale and over 90 studies to date. It’s thrilling to see all the research and gives me great hope. Intuitive Eating is a dynamic integration between mind and body. The principles work by either cultivating or removing obstacles to body awareness, a process known as interoceptive awareness. Essentially, Intuitive Eating is a personal process of honoring health by listening and responding to the direct messages of the body in order to meet your physical and psychological needs.

"To live a more soul rooted life, means to move beyond an out-dated psychological emphasis focused primarily on wounds and symptoms to seek out the more numinous gifts we all bear that lie trapped beneath the torment of old ideals, bounded by beliefs that no longer serve, relegated to shadows cast by fear, humiliation and shame."

What to Remember When Wakingby David Whyte

In that first hardly noticed moment in which you wake,
coming back to this life from the other
more secret, moveable and frighteningly honest world
where everything began,
there is a small opening into the new day
which closes the moment you begin your plans.

What you can plan is too small for you to live.
What you can live wholeheartedly will make plans enough
for the vitality hidden in your sleep.

To be human is to become visible
while carrying what is hidden as a gift to others.
To remember the other world in this world
is to live in your true inheritance.

You are not a troubled guest on this earth,
you are not an accident amidst other accidents
you were invited from another and greater night
than the one from which you have just emerged.

Now, looking through the slanting light of the morning window
toward the mountain presence of everything that can be
what urgency calls you to your one love?
What shape waits in the seed of you
to grow and spread its branches
against a future sky?
Is it waiting in the fertile sea?
In the trees beyond the house?
In the life you can imagine for yourself?
In the open and lovely white page on the writing desk?

December Greetings! This is the first of hopefully many segments on this podcast that is a conversation with our incredible team members and other amazing mental health professionals. Our curator of social operations, Rozlyn, recently asked folks on our social media accounts what questions they had around Covid and the Holiday season in general. We decided to meet up on zoom for this Q & A and share our ideas, thoughts and suggestions. We discuss sibling relationships, boundaries around Covid, isolation during this time, overwhelming emotions and much more. We also found our way into a conversation around being a mental health professional right now and during the Holidays and our personal strategies for caring for ourselves. Near the end of this episode, Stephanie shares a brain spotting technique for self-soothing and anxiety reduction, which is really cool and I have been using it frequently!

If you are a mental health professional, we know how rewarding and draining it can be right now. One way we are supporting our colleagues is offering a free self-care for mental health professionals crash course. Check out our website, under courses and you can sign up now for a daily guided practice in your inbox every day for a week (and a super special bonus practice) if that support could be helpful for you. AND if you are listening today and want to give a gift to a mental health professional you love (or gift for yourself) we are offering a discount code for the month of December on all courses (even our 3CI certification course).
