In this episode we chat with Rand Enaya and we chat about what to do when you're rejected from your dream school! Rand grew up in a family with 7 siblings as the middle child. The age gap with the older children made her the "eldest of the youngest". She initially wanted to be a doctor, then found an interest in property management. Her dad said she would be good in business, and that's what she went after. She applied to her dream business school in Canada and was rejected! What did she do? She picked another major at the university she wanted then expected to be able to transfer into the business program. She would only be allowed to transfer is she got permission from every professor. Started the program almost a month later and with an assignment due next week, she pulled off completing the assignments and catching up with studying for exams and getting an A to complete the minimum to transfer. What they didn't tell her is that the minimum wasn't enough so she found another university to transfer to and had to complete 2 first year courses before she could continue her program. She finally got into the program and now is back on track with her career currently working on an internship doing accounting for a... wait for it... property management company! We chat about referrals vs recommendations PLUS missing 100% of the shots you don't take! When submitting resumes online, it can be a big black hole with not feedback. An alternative approach would be to network with folks and get to know them. Spend some time to build rapport and understand their current challenges and opportunities. Then create a little project that showcases some of your skills and experience to solve those problems. Show it to them. Maybe get some feedback from your mentors or peers first. Then learn from the experience. And REPEAT! While each submission may take longer than submitting your resume, the likelihood of a response and the learning will be well worth it! Listen to the episode for more details! Doing a network audit starts by taking a look at who you spend the most time with. If you are indeed the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with, do those 5 people have the same values, goals, and ambitions? Most importantly, do they exhibit the behaviours and habits that you need to get to those goals? Look to spend more time with the folks that are aligned with your future goals, and less time with those that don't. Then take a look at the people that you know surrounding those goals. Are they in the industry, companies and domains that you want to get in to? If so, then build those meaningful connections. If not, then make those connections and look to make them meaningful. You can be proactive about the people you know and whom you interact with. Listen to the episode for more details! As a follow-on to the "What do you want question", https://siwike.fireside.fm/002 listen to the episode for us to For job seekers: get specific as a starting point. Instead of just wanting a job, or a job in the industry, look to get specific enough where you have identified a company. A role. If you're unsure, look at alumni. Those with the same or similar degrees might give you an idea of what roles might be suitable for you. For purpose seekers: Do the "retirement memo" exercise. Do the "Eulogy" exercise. If those are challenging for you, then do the "I want" exercise. If you still get stuck, change it to "I wish" or do an "Ikigai brainstorm". At the end of the day, take some time to get some clarity on what it is that you want! Listen to the episode for more details! It's not what you know, it's who you know. A common piece of wisdom when speaking about success in the world. I further the quote by saying "it's not who you know, but who knows you" that can be all of the difference. How many connections do you have on LinkedIn? Now how many connections, that if you messaged them, might actually respond and help with your request. That's the difference when people know you. We outline our process of networking called BMC = Building Meaningful Connections. It starts with making CONNECTIONS. You can reach out and connect even if you're shy and an introvert. We share some thoughts and insights on doing so. Now that we've connected, how do we make the relationships more MEANINGFUL? Often times it starts by being curious, interested, and most importantly looking to add value. So you've made a meaningful connection, how do you BUILD on them? The easiest way I found was to schedule it. Make sure that you'll allocate time to connect with folks. Make those connections a priority. Then practice with the purpose of getting better! When you BMC, you'll find that chasing opportunities less because more opportunities just happen to be coming your way. Listen to the episode for more details! What do you want? In the FOCUS inspired approach https://siwike.fireside.fm/002 that's the first question you need to answer. It seems like an obvious question and often folks don't take the time to ask themselves the question. I've also found that age is having less to do with it as there are fewer people late in their careers that ask themselves this question, and more younger people asking themselves. So take the time to ask yourself: what do you want? in your career? in your life? The operative word is" what do YOU want?". Many have wants that come from parents, family, friends, their culture, society or somewhere external. When they ask the question and take a minute to be selfish, they often find that the answer causes them to be more selfless. They realize they don't really want the fancy car, impressive title, or huge salary. There are other things that fulfill their legacy. Write down "I want" then whatever it is you want. It could be a thing. An experience. A skill. An achievement. Whatever you want. Some people write pages and pages. Others get stuck at number 8. At the end of the day, it's important to ask yourself what you want. You can look at the Japanese concept of Ikigai to help you with the brainstorming Plus know that you can change. So checking in on yourself periodically to see what has changed. Learn more in the episode! Take care of your health and you can go far. Ignore it and you might find (potentially unnecessary) challenges later. Suppose you were to take a cross country road trip. Only for them to tell you that they've given you a 20 year old car. Now you can take a look at some classic automobiles that could be decades old and still "purr like a kitten" as they say. Others you can see their wear and tear after a few years. How have you been taking care of your vehicle for life? Your body. Health comes in many forms. Physical health is often the first that comes to mind. Eating right. Exercising. Sleep. Those are the three we put at the forefront of physical health. The basics of eating right: eat "real food". Ones where you know where it came from where the answer isn't a factory. Ones that come from the fridge, not the pantry (imagine what they put in the food to allow it to sit on the shelf for years). The basics of exercising: get movement into your day consistently and daily. The basics of sleep: quality then quantity. Screen and caffeine curfews. Evening routines. Black out curtains. All of these factors reinforce each other. If you get these right then you'll be able to tackle your career's and life's most interesting challenges in full force! "He who thinks he can, and he who things he can't, is probably right" -Confucius Often times your choice and perspective on life can be a game changer. Simply making a choice and perhaps choosing a different perspective, can turn limitations into opportunities. Having the right mindset can be important to allow you to take action. Taking action is what leads you to your goals and to whatever success you aspire for yourself. Sometimes we're lost in our anxiety and fears. Fears are nothing but focus on the past. Fear isn't even real. Now danger, that's real. And fear is just anxiety about danger gone haywire. Anxiety is often worrying about a future that may never happy. As Mark Twain said "I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them never happened". That doesn't negate the need for planning. It's when we spend to much time in inaction vs action that it can become a problem. Get your mindset in order. Take the perspective where problems are puzzles and opportunities. When you do so, your career success is around the corner! "Tell me what you value and I might believe you, but show me your calendar and your bank statement, and I’ll show you what you really value" -Peter Drucker Non-negotiable time is the time you allocate in your week, day to invest in yourself to do the things that are important but not urgent. You know, that laundry list of things that you wanted to do like read that book, take that course, research that potential future of yours, reconnect with that former colleague, etc. The challenge is that the days/months/years pass by and you don't actually get to it. Also, keep in mind what non-negotiable time IS NOT. It is not time that you use to catch up on items that will be due soon. It is not time that you use to vegetate and recharge (although you could put some self-care exercises if that is a challenge for you). If you invested an hour a day for a year, you'd have the equivalent of more than 2 extra work-months of your year. Imagine how much more you'd grow if you had worked 2 extra months a year on your personal development? To get you started on your journey to discover the SIWIKE "Stuff I Wish I Knew Earlier", we start with the FI-A FOCUS inspired approach. A simple 3 step career coaching framework to unlock your career potential. FI-A starts with WHAT (do you want) then goes to WHY (do you want it), then finally to HOW (do you get it). While each step has a lot more layers, even starting the process can have profound effects. Have you actually taken the time to ask WHAT do you want? If you don't know what you want, how do you figure it out? When you know WHAT you want, the next step for driven motivation is to understand WHY. Then when you know WHAT and WHY, the HOW usually presents itself (though we share tools to make that approach easier). Listen to a high-level overview of FI-A to start your learning about SIWIKE.
