The Bantu language of the Xhosa tribe, related to Zulu and spoken by over 7 million people. It is one of the official languages of South Africa.
We spent 7 days on the point. The point is a different world from the City. Every day the same. Every day good waves and good vibes from the Lities. Every day starts with Coffee and Cigarettes and every day ends with Black Labels and a Brai. We slept at 9 and woke at 5. Some days we foraged for mushrooms. Some days we bought the biggest crayfish I’ve ever seen. The point was our home and the Lities were our family and the biggest worry we had was Sharks and rolling the land rover on the track to the point.
It was a blissful existence.

Looking around, though, we could be in any of a million places. Giant scrubby plateaus stretch for miles softened only by the familiar pink hue of the soon-to-be-rising sun. It could be West Oz. It could be Chile. It could be the moon… (if the moon had blue sky, pumping waves and a little lizard doing push ups on a nearby rock). This is the desert and, like any desert, it doesn’t take long venturing into one to quickly discover an overwhelming sense of complete isolation – a feeling that’s becoming more and more absent as modern life invades ever deeper into our personal space… but sheez, let’s not go there just yet.

Surfing somewhere cold has been forever on my bucket list... putting on that 5mm wetsuit with a hood, gloves and boots was seriously the coolest thing ever. You kinda have to dig deep to get psyched to go surf because it’s that cold, or way colder than I’m used to surfing in Sydney. Lots of coffee, music and air punches to warm the body up.
We didn’t really get stand up tubes, but fuck I had fun!

It’s a scorcher during the late summer of 2017 and Cape Town is busy experiencing one of the worst droughts in the city’s history. Deen Hill and Dale Staples do what any eco-conscious surfer not wanting to blast the AC would do, jump into the Atlantic and shred it up. Filmed by Calvin Thompson.
The swell was almost too big for the reef, turning a perfect right into a thick double-up monster. The few surfers game enough to put themselves under the lip were rewarded with some amazing tubes. Laurie Towner was one of these guys and got some great waves until he was flogged at the bottom of a huge double-up. The result was a few separated ribs but Laurie was still stoked! Today was a day that will go down in GromSearch history – 16 of the world’s best junior surfers battling it out in solid and powerful four-to-six-foot Manu Bay, posting 10-point rides and showing the world what the future of surfing looks like.
At the end of the competition, it was Torquay’s Xavier Huxtable (AUS) and Kauai’s Keala Tomoda-Bannert (HAW) who came out on top, taking down the duo from the NSW Central Coast Finn Hill (AUS) and Kirra-Belle Olsson (AUS).

New Zealand’s premiere surf event, The Rip Curl Pro Raglan, kicked off today in two-to-three-foot peelers at Manu Bay in Raglan, North Island – hosting the very best of New Zealand’s homegrown surfing talent, alongside the competitors of the GromSearch International Final.
In between heats, surfers snuck off to drive around the corner – which, in Raglan, is down a dirt road – searching for waves and finding stunning vistas. A part of the GromSearch experience is learning about the country and the land, and learning how to really “travel” while competing.

The DC Surf team headed to France last month and found themselves with more lay days than not. When the waves were good Bruce Irons, Kanoa Igarashi, Leo Fioravanti and Zeke Lau pulled into heavy beach breaks and when they weren’t they traveled through the Basque Country finding other ways to have fun, going to events, go-karting, and road tripping.

Originally from South Africa Greg Vorster has spent nearly a decade combing the rugged West Coast of Vancouver Island. Through detailed analysis of nautical charts, talks with old salts and hours spent neck deep in salal he began to piece together the intel needed to discover waves few people have ever seen. That combined with the screw loose mentality to go out and ride these waves often in complete isolation. Which is where mate Curtis Prior comes in, one of the few willing to join in on these out gambles and chase monster swells through the remote corners of the Pacific Northwest.
