The podcast to restore your faith in humanity! Join Charlie & Kyle as they cover the nonprofits and do-gooders of Austin, Texas and connect you with causes that you care about.

As Austin’s population grows, open land becomes a key discussion. Throughout Austin’s history, the 250,000 acres overlying the Barton Springs Edwards Aquifer (this sounds weird, is it officially this name or is it two places?) has been divided between the area’s business and environmental interests. The solution became Hill Country Conservancy which created a coalition of leaders between the business and environmental communities. The nonprofit's mission is to help facilitate communication between both parties in order to protect our land and our economy.In this episode of Everyday Superhumans, Charlie and Kyle chat with Adrienne Longnecker, the Chief Operation Officer and Director of Development of Hill Country Conservancy. We talk about one of Charlie’s favorite trail systems, the Violet Crown Trail. Kyle shows off his vocabulary and understanding of the word easements. Finally, did you know Texas has invasive species?

Established in 1991, Art From the Streets has helped hundreds of people experiencing homelessness form an art community. The wonderful artists at the heart of the organization attend weekly studio sessions. Through Art From the Street's online store and annual art show each artist receives a majority of the profits from their work.

In this episode of Everyday Superhumans, Kyle and Charlie chat with Executive Director Kelley Worden. Kelley talks about the history of Art From the Streets and the sense of community it gives to everyone involved, from the volunteers to the artists. We also talk about the common misconceptions of people experiencing homelessness and how Art from Streets is finding creative ways to reach out to the artists in a time of social distancing.

In 1953, Ed and Marge Bridges founded the Marbridge Foundation for their son, Jim, who had cognitive disabilities.

Marbridge provides different levels of care, support and guidance that are customized to the individual. Over 200 acres of land, Marbridge has three communities— The Ranch, The Village, and The Villa — that house 236 residents who live and work on the property.

In this episode of Everyday Superhumans Kyle and Charlie talk with the James Stacey, the CEO of the Marbridge Foundation, and Becca McPherson, Vice President of Development. They share how Marbridge strives to be ahead of its time, along with stories from Marbridge's many programs, and the joy of helping others live the life they deserve. GirlForward is an Austin based charity with Chicago roots dedicated to helping refugee girls ages 14 to 21 adapt smoothly and safely into America. It isn't being a refugee of any kinds, but unfortunately girls are especially venerable to violence, isolation, and a lack of education during times of civil unrest. GirlForward's mission is to help these young girls feel safe and at home, even in a different country.

In this episode of Everyday Superhumans Charlie and Kyle chat with Karnika Iyenga, the executive director of GirlForward, about the many challenges refugee girls face and how GirlForward is helping them overcome them.

Austin Wildlife Rescue has been helping keep Austin wild since 1977. Austin Wildlife Rescue rehabilitates and releases orphaned, sick, and injured wild animals and educates the public to coexist with wildlife.

In this episode of Everyday Superhumans Charlie and Kyle chat with the Hayley Hudnall, Executive Director of Austin Wildlife Rescue, about the nearly 8,000 animals AWR took in during 2019 as well as common misconceptions about wild animals and how you can help them. We often forget that the animals came before the neighborhoods and we are infringing on their territory. AWR helps us live together in harmony with education about protection and rehabilitation for the animals.

In our second remote interview of Everyday Superhumans, we chat with Thad Rosenfeld, VP for Communications of Meal on Wheels Central Texas, about how their program helps Texas seniors stay connected and independent. During these uneasy times, Meals on Wheels Central Texas, has been deemed an essential business and continues to deliver its life-sustaining services to thousands of homebound older adults and people with disabilities. Meals on Wheels Central Texas goes beyond meals with services for helping seniors with their dogs or cats, home safety repairs, respite care needs and programs designed to help adults with disabilities. Behind these services is a strong volunteer program whose members deliver warm greetings and much needed safety checks to homebound older adults. Due to Covid-19, the volunteer training program has been suspended. During this time of social distancing, Thad Rosenfeld of Meals on Wheels Central Texas, reminds us to reach out to our seniors and let them know we are thinking of them and their needs now and always in this heartfelt episode. In the very first remote interview of Everyday Superhumans, Charlie & Kyle chat with Amy Loar, the Executive Director of Generation SERVE, about how families can have fun volunteering together even while at home. Generation SERVE is building a society of future superhumans and we couldn’t be more thrilled to be a part of their journey.

Generation SERVE inspires youth aged 3 to 17 to focus on volunteerism and empowers them to make a difference in their community. Established originally in 2009, the nonprofit has 100 nonprofit partnerships, allowing youth and their families to consistently serve the environment, animals, seniors, and individuals and families in need.

In this moment of hardship it is best to look for the helpers, to paraphrase the late and great Fred Rogers. While we practice social distancing measures, Generation SERVE carries his message with their Helping While at Home initiative. The only requirement for volunteering is action and creativity.

In this episode we get down to the business of running a charity with the McCombs Board Fellows. The McCombs Board Fellows are a UT Austin based student ran organization dedicated to educating MBA students in leadership, project management, and communication. The Board Fellows does this through real world experience by having each student serve on the board of an Austin based nonprofit, creating a symbiotic relationship between the business savvy MBAs and the community oriented charities.

Kyle & Charlie sit down with Jacklyn Le and Ben Marek of the Board Fellows and chat with the two of them about their projects, what inspired them to get involved with the Board Fellows in the first place, and what exactly a nonprofit board does. Update: As you all could tell, the show is officially back on the air. Stay up to date with all things superhuman at our new website EverydaySuperhumans.show!

You might be wondering why Everyday Superhumans hasn't updated since May. Well it's time that you all get an explanation. Charlie and I had a long chat about the future of the podcast and have decided to put it in an indefinite hiatus. Between the two of us we've gotten so busy in our day to day lives that we haven't had a chance to work on the show. Outside of our work and social lives, Charlie is actively involved in several organizations and is attending an intense coding bootcamp. Meanwhile I am busy working with the City of Austin on a project I am very involved with, and working on a new podcast.

Sadly there are so many hours in a day that we decided to call a long break on Everyday Superhumans. We would like to thank the following for making this podcast possible.

Anna Hanstrom - Without her we would have never been able to extend our reach from podcasting to written content like the Superscripts and the Newsletter. In just her short time with the show we were able to grow so much. We wish the best for her and her future podcasting adventures!

MathHappens is on a mission to show the world the wonders of math, in an interactive environment outside of the classroom. Since 2014 the educational charity has partnered with organizations from the Austin Nature & Science Center to Alamo Drafthouse. By demonstrating mathematical concepts with hands on exhibits, such as a human sundial, MathHappens has taken numbers off the chalkboard and presented them to people of all ages as physical tangible things.

In this episode of Everyday Superhumans Kyle & Charlie chat with Lauren Siegel, cofounder of MathHappens, and Josh Ransom, the exhibit coordinator of the Austin Nature & Science Center. Josh and Lauren share with the many exhibits MathHappens has contributed towards the center from measuring tools to demonstrate common proportions found in nature to a human sundial. The four also share their personal histories with math, and what inspired them to love science. Finally Lauren shares why it's so important to have more than just a chalkboard if you want to inspire inspire people of all ages to love and appreciate math.

The LIVESTRONG Foundation fights for the more than 32.6 million people around the world affected by cancer now. how about Founded in 1997, LIVESTRONG unites, inspires and empowers people and their loved ones affected by cancer with free cancer support services.

In this episode, Charlie and Kyle chat with Mike Threadgould, Digital Marketing Manager at LIVESTRONG, and Genny Dalton, a cancer survivor and LIVESTRONG alumni. Genny Dalton shares her story of strength through her fight with colon cancer. She teaches us how to be our own advocate in the US health system and how the foundation's programs empower patients during and post cancer treatment. Genny shares her experiences with LIVESTRONG's programs including LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, and LIVESTRONG Navigation. Looking ahead, Mike talks about their goal to drive systematic changes in patient-centered care through the LIVESTRONG Cancer Institutes which they launched in partnership with The University of Texas Dell Medical School.

Austin Film Festival furthers the art and craft of film by inspiring and championing the work of all artists who use the language of film and television to tell a story. AFF is best known for its annual October Austin Film Festival and Conference (Oct. 25 - Nov 1, 2018). The Conference was the first event of its kind, bringing professional and amateur screenwriters together to celebrate the role of screenplays in filmmaking and host conversations focusing on craft and on particular films and television series. Over 25 years, the nonprofit has evolved to podcasts, digital libraries, youth programs and much more with the same talented leader at its helm.

The Austin Tech Alliance is a nonpartisan grassroots organization dedicated to promoting a civically engaged tech community within the growing Austin tech sector, and tech solutions for government programs. Their projects currently include TechVotes Austin, a program that educates voters who work in tech about policies and politicians that affect their work and helps recently relocated workers register to vote in Texas. The alliance is also working alongside the City of Austin on the Paper Census program. The Paper Census is a joint effort to identify all unnecessary paper based processes within the city and replace them with more efficient digital solutions.

In this episode Charlie and Kyle speak with David Edmonson, the CEO of the Austin Tech Alliance. The trio chat about the importance of being civically active, Texas\' low voter turn out, and how technology companies and governments can work together to make the world a better place.

The Paramount and Stateside Theatres are a historic Austin treasure. Over a hundred years and hundreds of thousands of performances the theatres have featured acts from legendary magician Harry Houdini to modern comedy legend Weird Al Yankovic. The theatres are no strangers to the world's most talented performers, and none of these unforgettable shows would have been possible without the Austin Theatre Alliance. The Austin Theatre Alliance is the 501(c)3 non-profit organization that manages the Paramount and Stateside Theatres. The Theatre Alliance oversees everything from maintaining the theatre's historic interior to booking guests. The Austin Theatre Alliance strives to engage all Central Texans through extraordinary live performances and films with performers and speakers from all around the world.

In this episode, Charlie and Kyle sit down with Jim Ritts, the CEO of the Austin Theatre Alliance, to talk about the history and mission of the theatres. Since 2011 Ritts and his team have been responsible for hosting over 300 live events annually in Austin's famous Paramount and State Theatres, including a speech from a sitting president. Jump back in time and enjoy the nostalgic feel of Austin's downtown theatre district in this brand new episode.

Over thirty years ago a disaster struck Armero, Colombia when a dormant volcano erupted. In its wake, a devastating mudslide plummeted down the mountainside and destroyed the Colombian town. The aftermath left thousands dead, buildings in ruin, and families separated. After the event, the Colombian government did its best to restore the lost city, and reunite the families torn apart. However, in the past few years it has been discovered that three hundred children who were presumed dead are not, and were allegedly given up for adoption, their records now missing. This is the story of one man's quest to reunite one of those children with his mother.

Jared Gossett is an Austin based entrepreneur and philanthropist. He is the owner of Gossett & Co, a local home builder, and Project Rise, a nonprofit dedicated to helping students in underserved communities empower themselves through entrepreneurship. Jared is now leading the project Finding Sergio. Finding Sergio\'s mission is to reunite the lost children of Armero with their surviving parents, beginning with uniting Maria Lucia with her missing son Sergio. In this episode Kyle and Charlie sit down with Jared and talk about the Armero tragedy, the radio story thatinspired Jared to take up the mission, and how uniting one woman\'s missing child will spark a grand reunion between the other parents who also lost their children on that tragic day.

Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA) is the family for those less fortunate. BACA offers the support and protection that has always been ingrained within biker culture to children in need. Founded by a social worker and driven by bikers, BACA has empowered survivors of childhood abuse and shown them that they too can be strong and powerful to overcome the monsters in their life.

The Kind Clinic has made Austin a national hotspot for the future of sexual health and wellness. As a program of Texas Health Action, the Kind Clinic provides sexual health services including HIV treatment with PrEP and PEP access, STI testing and treatment, HIV testing, and gender affirming care to Central Texans in need. The clinic strives to provide sexual health services to all members of the LGBTQ community and allies, regardless of race, creed, gender expression, or sexual orientation.

In this episode Kyle and Charlie speak to Marcus Cruz Sanchez, the clinic\'s Director of Communications and Outreach. They chat about the current state of HIV treatment, sexual liberation and how the Kind Clinic is changing the future of LGBTQ+ medical centers.

College is never easy. You're on your own for the first time, classes are tough and demanding, and you gotta deal with dorm food on top of it all. For Jamie Schanbaum college was made even more difficult. During her freshman year Jamie was diagnosed with meningococcal meningitis, a deadly flesh-eating bacteria that can kill a person in twenty-four hours. Despite this Jamie was able to fight the disease, but not without some major losses. Since she overcame the infection Jamie Schanbaum has been a major advocate for vaccines and started the JAMIE (Joint Advocacy of Meningococcal Information & Education) Group to educate the public.

In this episode of Everyday Superhumans Kyle & Charlie chat with Jamie Schanbaum about being a survivor, Jamie's time at the Paralympics, vaccines and how Jamie turned her experience into the JAMIE Group.

With 48 beds The Refuge will be the largest rehabilitation center for victims of minor sex trafficking in the entire United States.

Inspiring artists all across the city, the HOPE Campaign is one of the largest on-going creative projects in Austin. The most ambitious and most notable project of the HOPE Campaign is the HOPE Outdoor Gallery (aka Austin Graffiti Park, or Castle Hill). The HOPE Outdoor Gallery provides street artists with a 100% legal area to spray their next masterpiece. The park also provides an instant audience for their works as well. From famous local artists such as the Eye Doctor and pasetoo, to young upcoming artists, the graffiti park is an ongoing ever changing art gallery of some of best artists Austin has to offer.

Join Kyle & Charlie this episode with one of artists behind the Outdoor Gallery: Miles Starkey (@miles_starkey). Miles shares the origins of the HOPE campaign and the evolution of the gallery, as well as his own story of getting into street art. Since 2010 WellAware has been providing clean drinking water to those in need in Africa. Their efforts don't stop at just digging a well for the villages, they insure the well is self sustaining and provides economic growth within the village. With clean water comes a happier and healthier society, which boost school attendance and paves way to gender equality.

One Dollar Dreams is the dream project of Austin's Pachi Tamer. Pachi's mission is to remind us all that homeless people are people too. Often times it is easy to ignore somebody begging for money on the side of the road, but Pachi thinks otherwise. One Dollar Dreams is a touching project sharing the stories of the homeless across Austin, the US, and South America.

In this episode Pachi chats with Kyle and Charlie about how he lost everything which inspired him to share the stories of others who lost everything. How he helped a man get off the streets and make a living as a chef, and how we can all make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate than us. And how the Spanish television giant Telemundo asked him to film a documentary on the the homeless across South America!

In 1990, Out Youth formed when two graduate students at the University of Texas in Austin discovered in their research that the best way to support LBGTQ youth was through peer facilitated support groups. As of today, Out Youth has changed over 10,000 people’s lives by creating a safe space for youth ages 12 to 23 in Travis County and the five surrounding counties.

In this episode, Charlie & Kyle chat with Kathryn Gonzales, Out Youth's Operations and Program Director, about the non profit’s residential unique drop-in center, the overwhelming volunteer support in the community, as well as the many events put on by Out Youth.

Austin Pets Alive! are the heroes Austin deserves. Beginning as a humble awareness group in the late 90s, with the simple mission of stopping shelters in Austin from euthanizing animals, since then they have established Austin, TX as the number one no-kill city in the nation. No-kill cities are cities with a 10% or less euthanasia rate in every animal shelter within the city limits.

Since, 2008, Austin Pets Alive! has expanded into a full fledged animal shelter. Austin Pets Alive! accepts every dog or cat, no matter their breed with open arms. They provide full medical treatment for their animals, work alongside the RuffTail Runners (Episode 14) to ensure every dog gets proper exercise, and provide a safe space for feral cats. Plus many many more programs.

This episode Kyle and Charlie chat with Dr. Ellen Jefferson, Austin Pet\'s Alive!\'s executive director. Together they talk about how her and her team of volunteers have managed to save so many animals lives, how Austin Pets Alive!\'s practices are influencing other shelters across the US, and how you can become a hero to a dog or cat\'s life. Oh, and of course, what her superhero name would be!

The Yellow Bike Project is an initiative to get bikes into the hands of as many Austinites as possible, and is keeping Austin mobile.

Originally established in the 90s as a means of providing single geared bikes, all painted yellow (thus the name), Yellow Bike has since then evolved into both an educational workshop offering free classes on bike maintenance, and a full on storefront with affordable used bikes. Their mission of getting bikes into the hands of anyone who walks into their shop.

This episode Kyle and Charlie chat with Tom and Thomas, two mechanics at the Yellow Bike Project. Together they share the noble history of the Project; how anyone, regardless of mechanical skill, can walk right in, pick up a wrench, and get to work on their bike like a pro. They even share how you can earn a free bike!

The dogs of Austin have it good. If you've ever been to Austin you're probably very familiar with all the dogs and dog owners out and about. Tons of businesses are dog friendly, from coffee shops to the famous Yard Bar. But not all dogs in Austin have it that good, especially those in the shelter, that is until the RuffTail Runners came to town.

The RuffTail Runners (or RTR for short) are a nonprofit based out of Austin, their mission is simple: to get every shelter dog outside! Every day volunteers at RTR hit the trails with their furry companion for a brisk walk or a nice jog around the lake. Their efforts keep the dogs happy through exercise and socializing with other dogs and people alike. This week Kyle and Charlie at with two of the folks behind the RuffTail Runners, Anna and Zack, about their superhuman squad of runners and dogs helping each other live a healthier and happier life!

Serving as member of Honk!TX, an annual New Orleans style brass band music fest in Austin, TX, she has helped in bringing a whole new level of excitement in the live music capital of the world. When she's not jamming out in one of the many brass bands she's in, you can find her at the Liberal Arts & Science Academy inspiring young minds of the wonders of the universe in her astronomy course, and working on hands on projects in her engineering courses. Alison is a true renaissance woman.

In Everyday Superhumans season two opener, Kyle and Caroline sit down with Alison and chat about what exactly Honk! is, the importance of both the arts and sciences in education, and how anyone can go and find their passion. This episode is well worth the wait!

Running for Cade is an annual 5K race that happens every May in Houma, LA. The race is more than just a reason to show off how fast your 5K time is compared to your friends, it's an enormous charity event dedicated to raising awareness and funding for research for Prader-Willi syndrome, a rare genetic condition in which the body cannot tell when the stomach is full.

In this very special episode Kyle and Caroline chat with the event's organizer, and the mother of Cade, Maegan Richard. Together they discuss what Prader-Willi symdrome is, the day-to-day challenges of raising a child with Prader-Willi (and raising two other kids at the same time!), how the event has brought the community of Houma closer together, and the bright future of Prader-Willi research.
