A fresh take on music and our world. Five anonymous contributors respond to a question they receive every Saturday night - from heart stuff, to technicalities, to break ups, make ups, challenges and celebrations - music is there through it all. Hosted by musician Lisa-Marie Smith and her spirit child, Neil Masiba.
It’s confirmed. We’re foodies. And the Season 16 contributors added so much to our plate!
Ooo Season 16 is going to be interesting! Neil says this is the ama2000 season…we hope he’s ready!
If you ever want to get into a dream space, this is the episode for you. Beautiful musician dreams.
As we raced off into Season 15, we met 5 brand new contributors. A great start to the Church Musicians season. There is loads of fun to be had!
The question that in so many instances should not even be entertained…but we went there, and the 5 anonymous contributors did their elevating thing, and it all just melted together into a podcast episode. Check it out!
What a journey this week’s episode turned out to be! We have so many (too many) collective experiences on this performance “phenomenon” it’s intense!
As we get knee-deep into the Performance Season. The 5 contributors each tackled the question so frankly from their perspective - vulnerability is celebrated on The Saturday Night 5! The question brought us all together in a way that we haven’t experienced in a long time.
Hello Season 14! Even with a blinding headache, Neil holds it together. Also, 5 super interesting contributors to enjoy for these 4 weeks. Enjoy!
From Neil’s chronic exhaustion (any tips?) to the moms and the millennial, to Lisa’s mirror trigger…this is an episode for the books!
Ok so this episode took a turn…but we went with it, because it still felt right. Too cryptic? Have a listen to this episode - you may surprise yourself!
When you try to do things differently, you have a greater chance of getting a fresh result. I believe that’s what happened with this week’s episode. An old question, but with a refreshing approach. The 5 contributors really delivered the goods this week!
What an awesome way to start the podcast for 2022! 5 brand new contributors (still on their best behavior but we’ll give them a minute).
What a way to end Season 11! Check out the slick responses from the 5 contributors, and the crazy stories too…
A number of assumptions in the question this week, but that did not stop the 5 contributors from just getting right in the thick of things and sharing themselves in a way that Neil and I felt privileged to experience.
There isn’t much to say when the contributors say it all…and that’s what happened in this week’s episode! Check it out to see whether you can identify your own musical comfort food.
Hello Season 11!! We back, well-rested from our power nap, rearing to go…and we have MISSED you! But we’re here now, with 5 brand new anonymous contributors. This time we have an additional challenge for our listeners: Can you figure out who they are AND what they have in common?
Not the easiest of questions to answer - especially as the contributors were asked not to sing…to use only their words. The result: an interesting, and somehow heartwarming dive into self-awareness. Enjoy!
Neil and I both love food, the eating part especially, identifying flavors and textures and exploring combinations and stuff. And I can’t believe we haven’t had a foodie question on the podcast yet! But look no further…indulge your culinary cravings and fantasies and the music that would go with it. While eating with your hands 💁🏽♀️
I’m not sure if it’s a thing yet, but contributors on the Saturday Night 5 somehow all tend to be deep thinkers. With completely different preferences and style favorites, they are able to pour themselves in the question and be brave enough to share their honest response. Kudos to the contributors of Season 10 Episode 2 👏🏽
We’ve often been reminded that everyone sees things differently. You know mos, we can all look at the same picture and have a different experience. I’ve always wondered what it would be like when we put music to a picture. A delightfully indulgent episode for me…what do you think?
The absolute mostest. That’s the best way I could describe this week’s podcast episode. Have a listen and be inspired by the lyrics that emerge from these eloquent anonymous contributors!
Well…this turned out so very differently than I had anticipated. From a weird question came some of the greatest life lessons…have a listen, and check in on your friends!
According to Neil, this was another “easy” question. Lisa had a different experience. See what you make of it!
Hello Season 9! We have five brand new contributors who had a rather gentle introduction to their month-long stint as guests on the podcast. But they brought the goods nevertheless! Enjoy.
If there’s one thing I’ve learnt over the years, it’s that (if you’re open to it) you never stop learning. And boy, did The Saturday Night 5 bring it this week with top-notch advice for aspiring and established bass singers! We learned a whole lot, and we can’t wait for you to hear how this question went down.
Oh man, if you ever need a pick-me-up (or a break-me-out), this podcast episode is for you! Amazing what the mere prospect of being stuck in a cardboard box can do to the creative juices. Enjoy!
We’ve had this discussion so many times in little bits and pieces, here, there, and everywhere - it was time to bring it to The Saturday Night 5. Enjoy! 🦋
Season 8 is here! We have 5 new contributors who dived right in with their take on the first question of the new season. And hey, we’re so stoked that a local group made it into the list of favorite songs to shower to! Go on, get your weekly dose of music commentary right here 🦋
My daughter gave me this question, and said that she would spend the entire 5.5 minutes looking for just the right song 😂 we laughed so lekker, and I promptly forgot how deep this question actually touches one. Music and the end of life. What a beautiful discussion!
Even in the throes of a sinus cold, my gasps and coughs were worth every splutter, because I have ALWAYS wanted to talk about dancing! Bringing this dream to The Saturday Night 5 was the best thing I could have done. Listen to an off-beat authentic discussion about dancing.
Mmmh...we tried a different take on an age old issue, and we got more than we bargained for!
It’s Season 7, everyone! Five brand new contributors just burst into our lives with such beautiful honesty - from age old debates, to authentic opinions, mind-blowing innovation...en dit alles oor n tamatie 😂 Make sure you listen to this one!
Who would have thought? An entire podcast episode about singing happy birthday at work. And then, one of the contributors had a birthday during this week! In this final episode of Season 6, the contributors once again had us sitting up and taking notes. And, if applicable, happy birthday to you!
A very special shout-out to the contributors of Season 6, who in this episode knocked it out of the entire park with their openness in sharing what they think.
We were so stumped, there wasn’t much left to say...so here is the shortest podcast episode in all 6 seasons.
Enjoy!
Give your ears a treat as you listen to the contributors on The Saturday Night 5 get into this week’s question. Maybe some surprises, but make no mistake: uncovering your own musical mood is such a powerful experience!
And Season 6 kicks off with a bang! New contributors, new voices, new opinions and preferences...we were in our element. Whether you prefer to create your own playlist with individual tracks, or show your support for a particular artist by purchasing the full album, you’re sure to find something to smile at, something new, and if your name is Neil...more questions :)
A singer is about to sing in the main service at church. Which is the bigger transgression: a short skirt or singing off key? This was such a heavy and difficult question for me to work through - even though I had come up with it in the first place. But somehow, The Saturday Night 5 have managed (yet again) to spark a healthy discussion about some very sensitive matters.
Often when we take the time to consider those things that we take for granted (how did that get so heavy), we find lessons that we didn’t know were there. That about sums up my own experience with this question. Whistling and musicality is an odd thing to talk about - but just listen to The Saturday Night 5 take on it...hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
There are a couple of things that can totally tank a live performance. The live sound is one of those things. The 5 contributors stepped behind the desk, and shared their imagined (and some rather real) irritations that sound engineers have to deal with. Also, our “Validate Neil” campaign got its first legs. Lots to enjoy!
And we’re getting right into it with our 5 new contributors in Season 5 of The Saturday Night 5! Apart from the inspiring insights into the question, listen also to how each contributor expresses their unique connection with the visual - it’s an experience indeed.
An awesome end to Season 4! I came across this question (and ensuing thread of discussion) and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. So I asked the Saturday Night 5 contributors what they thought. Hey...let me just say, this is why I love this podcast! Also, Neil is insightful and spicy as usual. Check it out!
Well, it turns out there is still some juice in this tireless topic - with one contributor actually admitting that she had never heard of this question or heard it discussed ever before! And then, the insights from these 5 contributors blew us AWAY! We found our zen, were part of a tribe, giving meaning to the action of praise, the most beautiful connection described, in an open act of love...you have got to listen to what came from this week’s question!
Apart from the fact that I totally indulged my penchant for the abstract in this episode, Neil’s superpower (aka understanding people) was put to such great use! The contributors went all the way into the creative side of their brains and made us all think a little bit more about how powerful association is. Enjoy!
Welcome to Season 4!! A brand new set of five contributors get straight into it...with their words. Although Neil had to be coaxed out of his shell a little at first, we ALL had a blast swimming in a part of the music ocean we don’t often venture into: interpreting music into words. Enjoy!
Who would have imagined, that a couple of days after this episode question was released to the contributors, one of South Africa’s major music store franchises announced its closure! An interesting look at what is happening with our music world. Enjoy!
From distractions to preoccupation to naked audiences and faces of discipline - this week’s episode has it all! The 5 contributors gave us so much to talk (and think) about. Enjoy!
So we went there. All the way Michael Jackson there. The contributors covered just about the entire gambit of things one could notice, but how he looked was a common thread.
A brand new set of 5 anonymous contributors kick off their 4-week stint of tackling some quirky questions about music. I’m starting to notice some trends in the first episode of each season. Are you?
You wake up one morning and find you’re the only person alive on earth. What music would you listen to? I’ve found that dramatic situation like this one always brings out the “deep” in people - and this weeks episode is no exception!
Many of us have been in this situation, and watched as others have tried to handle it. But what’s the “right way” or is there a gold standard? And of course, Neil led the conversation to the point of harmonic blend...and that’s why this is a slightly longer episode! Enjoy.
The cliche “different strokes for different folks” couldn’t be more appropriate than in this episode! There are of course points of resonance, but it’s so liberating to enjoy the varying views of people’s preference in music - especially when it comes to life’s BIG moments.
The 5 anonymous contributors went to town with their descriptions of the song they would choose for their best friends wedding. So insightful! And as usual, Neil and Lisa have a field day with everything from cronuts to bouncers. Enjoy!
A bit more of a case study type of question for this episode: you’re driving, stop at a traffic light. A car pulls up next to you. The driver looks at you, smiles, and winds down their window. What music is playing in their car?
At least this weeks question is easier for Neil to relate to! Such deep insights from the Saturday Night 5, who shared so much about their own listening styles. Also, leave a comment this week - we would love to hear from you!
In this episode, The Saturday Night 5 describe their experience of music in the context of their first breakup. Or not. A few more stories than usual, well worth the listen!
The Saturday Night 5 give us a peek into their personal experience with music - with host Lisa-Marie Smith and her inner child Neil Masiba having their very first podcast chat. See if you recognize any of the 5!
