Pastor Dan Sweetman from Life Point Church kicks off our Christmas season reminding us that the message of Christmas is even greater than we think.
Solus Christus. When we speak of Christ Alone, we are speaking of two things: (1) the exclusivity of Christ’s work (he is God incarnate; being both fully God and fully man). Jesus did that which only God could do and constantly pointed to himself as being God. He exclusively occupies the throne. And (2) the efficiency of Christ’s work (his work on the cross alone is sufficient to award salvation by grace to those who have faith).
Faith in Jesus Christ means that we have peace with God right now, and we can have hope for the future completion of this justification in Jesus, because of what he has done in the past.
What has Israel learned through this story? They are to be strong and keep all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses. The promise has been fulfilled, and YHWH has been faithful. Finally, 400 years since Genesis 12, Abraham’s children are in the land. What does Joshua charge them with? Worshipping the one true God, and not turning to the left or to the right; not mixing with other nations so that they don’t end up bowing down and worshipping their false gods. Will Israel be faithful? Will they remain true to their one God? Sadly, when we read on we discover that the answer is no. But God is faithful. Even when he is punishing and chastising his children it is done out of love and he has not forgotten his promises. God will be faithful—even to the point of entering his land and his people himself and becoming the ultimate sacrifice for their sins.
The land has been divided and the people are settling in. They say farewell to the Eastern Tribes who fought for them diligently for the past ten years, and who are to take their designated allotment back on the other side of the Jordan. But what does the rest of the nation discover after they have left? The Eastern Tribes had set up an idol of “imposing size” right beside the Jordan. What else are they to interpret from this act except for total defiance of YWHW, blatant disregard of his law, and outright treason? They send their trusted man Phinehas to find out what the deal is, and what do they discover? That they had it all wrong. This altar was not set up for some false god, but rather as a sign of the covenant between them and their countrymen. The nation is restored and they live in harmony side by side.
The story told in Joshua chronicles the faithfulness of YHWH. The land, which was to become the possession of the entire nation, now had to be divided up. Joshua goes into painstaking detail to express the intricate and beautiful faithfulness of YHWH to his people. Each tribe has their land. Funnily enough, even though this part of the book is perhaps the most laborious to read through, it is, in fact, the VERY POINT OF THE ENTIRE BOOK. The final three verses (21:43-45) in this section make this abundantly clear.
Israel’s first (and most important) battles are told in comparison to demonstrate one thing clearly: this was God’s war. He was not fighting for them, nor was he fighting against Canaan; he was establishing his glory on the earth through a people set apart for his name. In Jericho, it is clear who the real winner is. Although the walls of the city lie in ruins, Israel can scarcely take credit. All they did was walk around it in silence, and then not in silence. It was God who delivered them. Ai was a different story; something happened in Jericho that would change the battle in Ai and cause Israel to learn a valuable lesson the hard way; they were to be obedient to YHWH. This was, after all, His battle. A man named Achan had disobeyed the law that YHWH had very clearly spelled out for them; he had stolen some of the items that were to be dedicated to YHWH. Achan’s dishonesty taught Israel two things: God is not going to abide disobedience, and the sins of one will impact the lives of the many. Israel must trust in God and renew the covenant.
Walking into the promised land wasn’t just a case of stepping over some boundary line; The LORD directed each step carefully and deliberately; the same way a bride rehearses her steps as she walks towards her beloved; the same way a dancer choreographs each move to establish something beautiful. The dance of Israel as they crossed over the river Jordon was designed to convey one thing; the reproach of Egypt. Forty years ago they were slaves, living in fear and hostility. Today they are a free people, and this dance tells that story.
While the nation of Israel prepares to pass over the Jordon, Joshua sends two Israelite spies into Canaan to investigate the land, especially Jericho; the immensely fortified megacity that has withstood the attempted invasions of countless enemies. What the spies discover in Jericho changes the battle though; a prostitute—Rahab—who both fears YHWH, protects her family, and protects the spies from being caught. Rahab conceals the spies and helps them to return to Joshua with a good report in exchange for amnesty for her and her family. Rahab’s faith in the strength of YHWH gives the spies the substance they needed for a successful report to Joshua. When they return to their leader, Joshua strengthens the nation and they get ready to enter the land.
Moses is dead. For the past forty years Israel has been wondering the desert, and now they stand on the precipice of the greatest thing to have ever happened to them: the inheritance of the promised land. Forty years ago, they were slaves. Today they are the children of God; readying themselves for the battle that is to come; the battle to inherit what was promised all those years earlier to their father Abraham. Their new leader Joshua has taken up the mantle and is ready to lead God’s people. They are not soldiers, and they have no land. They lean only on the promises of YHWH. What does he require of them? To be strong and courageous.

The Church grows in two ways. It grows up into maturity and it grows out into mission. Better disciples and more disciples.
