Cari sits down with Bakari Sellers to talk through the case of 14-year-old Cyrus Carmack-Belton, who was shot in the back after an argument over four bottles of water at a South Carolina gas station, and why the owner, Rick Chow, was acquitted. Bakari lays out how messy the legal reality can be: “there was no shoplifting,” the shooting happened “130 yards away from the store,” and the jury only had two choices, guilty or not guilty of murder, because the defense kept out a lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter could have affected the jury’s ability to choose guilty or place the entire blame on Mr. Chow.

Dawn Staley grew up in a competitive household that prepared her for whatever the outside world would throw at her - but nothing could have readied her for being a female basketball player in the early ’90s. The WNBA was non-existent, and players had few career opportunities to compete professionally, but Staley was determined. She played overseas, worked odd jobs, and kept her head in the game, but not even she could have predicted the road that would lead her to South Carolina. After years of playing and coaching, Staley had witnessed various degrees of inequity, but this year '2021" she changed the sport and the trajectory for women to follow her. Off-the-court Dawn Staley has already won! During this episode, Staley speaks openly about her journey, what it took to get her here, and the risk involved. One thing is for certain; she earned this moment. Now back to the game.

Jemele Hill recently released her memoir, “Uphill” and she doesn’t hold back, but sometimes truth comes at a cost. Being great at doing what you do does not equate to an opportunity to continue to do so. Last week, Claudine Gay, the first black woman to hold the title of President of Harvard University in its 388 years history resigned or rather was forced to step down after being accused of plagiarism. Throughout countless occasions we can pinpoint circumstances where persons of color were forced to redirect their greatness or remove their excellence from the deemed goal, due to ill-intended persecution, is this another one of those scenarios?

We catch up with Steven Melendez at the New York Theatre of Ballet, where he started his career at the early age of seven years old. His journey with the NYTB has come full circle after being appointed the Artistic Director in 2022, where he now mentors and guides the careers of young dancers. As a young Puerto Rican boy from the Bronx, it wasn’t likely for him to pursue and gain success in the world of ballet; thankfully for the LIFT outreach program, Melendez was able to find his art and career. He joins us today to celebrate the release of the Lift documentary, filmed over 10 years detailing Melendez’s return to the Bronx shelter of his past, and focuses on the mentorship of three young dancers as Melendez runs the outreach program that he once attended as a child.

Younger women who weren’t born or active during a time when abortion was legal, don’t have a reference to the pre-Roe vs Wade era. But what is it? What is Roe vs Wade and why is overturning it causing such an upset?
Roe v. Wade is the name of the lawsuit that led to the landmark 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision establishing a constitutional right to abortion in the United States.
Ok, now that you know, do we have to explain why overturning it has created great concern not just for women's rights, but for the legal right of same-sex marriage, Trans rights, and perhaps civil rights as well.
Marianne Williamson is a passionately pro-choice woman who has previously run for political office and is a member of the Democratic Party. After four years, Wilds returns to music with a complicated love song entitled, “Simple Things” and no pun intended but it’s safe to say Tristan has his, “SWAGGER” back! (also the name of his new show on Apple TV+).

Dawn Staley grew up in a very competitive household that prepared her for whatever the outside world would throw at her - but nothing could have readied her for being a female basketball player in the early ’90s. The WNBA was non-existent, players did not have many career opportunities to compete professionally, but Staley was determined. She played overseas, worked odd jobs, and kept her head in the game, but not even she could have predicted the road that would lead her to South Carolina. After years of playing and coaching, Staley had witnessed various degrees of inequity, but this year '2021" she changed the sport and the trajectory for women to follow her. With the new season gearing up to start this month, it is game on as usual for the University of South Carolina Women Basketball team, but off-the-court Dawn Staley has already won! During this episode, Staley speaks openly about her journey and what it took to get her here, and the risk involved-one thing is for certain; she earned this moment. Now back to the game.
